A Seat at the Table: February 17th  Join the Faith & Culture Center of Nashville for dinner at the J.L. Turner Center for an informal and intentional conversation between people of diverse and ethnic backgrounds to learn about your neighbors and dispel misinformation and stereotypes. Program facilitated by Our Muslim Neighbor initiative.

AARP Driver Safety Classes: March 2017  This Smart Driver course teaches evidence-based strategies to keep you safe behind the wheel. Completing the course could save you money on your car insurance.

Beginner Line Dance Classes: April 2017  Join member Jeannie Horde for this beginner course to get you bootscoot and boogy.

GET INVOLVED Volunteer Opportunities THE GREEN TEAM: The FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center is partnered with Metro Waste Management to help keep Bellevue’s Recycling Center clean & safe. Volunteers cover a day of the week to drive through & check on the center. If the area is in need of attention you will report any issues to us & we will notify the Metro Waste Management.

AMBASSADOR: Oversees the Turner Lobby. Registers members for special events & trips.

Answers questions & makes event reminder calls. Assists with event set-up.

SUBSTITUTE AMBASSDOR: Fills in for regular ambassadors when needed.

VOLUNTEER DRIVER: Drive van for center trips. Complete driver training & background check. Trip cost is free for drivers including meals.

CLASS INSTRUCTOR: Lead social, recreational, educational or health & wellness activities for members.

TELEPHONE REASSURANCE: Part of a committee that contacts any members that have not been seen or heard from in a while to make sure they are doing well.

Welcome the Newest Member of Our Team We are very thrilled to bring Hannah Lee on board as our Volunteer and Office Manager.

Hannah joins us as a recent grad, having just earned a degree in both English and Spanish as well as a minor in Human Services from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She also just returned from a semester abroad in Costa Rica.

A standout athlete, she was the captain of the UWW gymnastics team her senior year and an All-American. The team won the Division III national championship three times during her run.

She’s been active in her community as the President and Community Service Organizer of the UWW chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and works with several other organizations.

Please join us in welcoming her into our community!

Letter from the Director…

I hope everyone had a lovely holiday season. I’m looking forward to this new year, our first “full one” with our new team. I’ve been having a blast getting to know everyone; this is a great center, a great community, and a great place to come in to work every day. I’m also very excited that we’ve added another member to our team, and I’m looking forward to you all getting to know Hannah.

We’re really going to be expanding our programming in the coming months, now that we have our feet firmly underneath us. That begins this very month, with a couple of very exciting new classes.

Please take our survey that will be coming to your inboxes soon, let us know what you’d like to do! Also, my door is always open for any thoughts or concerns you may have.

Happy New Year!!! I am very excited about the year ahead with all the programs and trips we have for you to enjoy. We are keeping all the old favorites, bringing back some previous programs, and introducing some new ones.

I hope you will take some time to fill out the J.L. Turner Center 2017 Programming Survey so we can enhance our activities and attract more members to our into community. Look for the survey via email or stop by the center on January 11th.

We have some great Lifelong Learning Programs planned here at the Center this month; including Art, Spanish, and Cooking Classes. We will also be taking a trip to the Warner Park Nature Center to learn how to attract winter wildlife to our backyards.

Next, we will take this newly acquired knowledge and make birdfeeders during our Turner Craft Day. As many of you know, I love to cook and I am looking forward to sharing some simple tricks for Mastering Sauces during the cooking classes. For our Foodie Night and Lunchin’ Around trips we will visit some local French restaurants to experience some amazing sauces firsthand.

I look forward, as always, to seeing all of you here at the center.

OUR 22nd SEASON OF OUR 11th YEAR BEGINS FEBRUARY 3, 2017 Our first speaker will be Bob Brandt, Nashville Greenways Board Member, who will discuss his new book “PAINTED TRILLIUM: A NOVEL OF THE CIVIL WAR”. The book is a story of deprivation, survival, and rebirth set in Middle Tennessee during the Civil War, told through the intersection of the lives of a 21-year old Murfreesboro woman and a Union officer with a fiancée back in Ohio.

The J.L. Turner Center is offering two great items for purchase. ALL proceeds go toward supporting our center.

All events are free unless noted otherwise, and a reservation is required for all events listed.

It is of utmost importance to sign up in advance for any trip or event you wish to attend. If we don’t have sufficient numbers the day before, we then unfortunately, have to cancel.

For events involving food, you must sign up at least 24 hours in advance.

Free Blood Pressure Checks: Mondays from 9:00 AM—11:00 AM. Have your blood pressure checked by a retired registered nurse.

Reiki Appointments: Tuesdays at 11:00 AM. $15 for 20 min. $22 for 30 min. Healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch to activate the natural healing processes of the patient's body.

ON SITE EMISSIONS TESTING If you are unable to come to an event you have signed up for, please let us know as soon as possible.

Did you know...you can get your annual car emissions testing done right here at the Bellevue Family YMCA and FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center.

Cancellation of a PAID event less than 24 hours before the event occurs are non-refundable.

A mobile emissions site is available every Tuesday-Thursday from 11am to 4pm in the north parking lot.

FRIDAY FLICKS Friday, January 27th at 1:00pm Free Popcorn and Drinks “Young @ Heart” Documents the true story of the final weeks of rehearsal for the Young at Heart Chorus in Northampton, MA, whose average age is 81, and many of whom must overcome health adversities to participate.

Their music is unexpected, going against the stereotype of their age group, performing songs, for example, by James Brown, and Sonic Youth.

Although they have toured Europe and sang for royalty, this account focuses on preparing new songs, not an easy endeavor, for a concert in their home town, which succeeds in spite of several real heart breaking events.
