Discovering Ourselves Through Art January saw the beginning of an exciting six month arts program underwritten by the Metro Arts Council. The series, called “Who Am I,” will feature a variety of different art projects designed to have participants express their inner selves. Last month, a watercolor project used various techniques to create winter night skylines. It was wonderful to see everyone’s finished projects.

This month will feature another watercolor project. We will be drawing and painting mandalas. Mandalas are geometric patterns often used in Buddhism and Hinduism that represent the universe.

Teaching both projects is Kim Lane. Kim studied Fine Art and Arts History, as well as received a teaching degree at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. She had a career as a high school art teacher and worked for Artworks Studio in Randolph, New Jersey. You may also know Kim as one of our awesome SilverSneaker instructors! GET INVOLVED Volunteer Opportunities Note from the Volunteer Manager:... Interested in volunteering? Check out the opportunities we have available and see Hannah Lee to get involved! Ambassador: Oversee the Turner Lobby and help new members get involved at the Turner Center. Volunteer one day a week to assist members in registering for events, classes and trips. As well as answer questions, make reminder calls, and assist FiftyForward staff in events. Timeslots available for Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 12:00pm-3:15pm Green Team: Help keep Bellevue’s recycling site clean and safe. Volunteer one day a week to check on the site and report any issues to our staff. We will notify the Metro Waste Management Department of any problems. Drivers: Drive our FiftyForward van for trips. All trip costs and meals are free for drivers. Simply complete our driver training and background check to get involved. Class instructors: Lead one of our social, recreational, educational or health and wellness activities for our members.

Letter from the Director…
It's hard to believe we are into February already! I’m so excited with how things are going here at the center. Thank you so much to those who participated in the various surveys we’ve had recently. We love getting your feedback, so we can better serve you. And always remember our door is open for you to drop by and discuss anything! I did want to address the fact that we won’t have AARP Tax Aide this year. Unfortunately, the AARP volunteer who oversaw this site moved out of state, and a replacement dropped out. We have a lot to celebrate this month. Love is in the air for Valentine’s Day! Make beautiful handmade Valentine and other greeting cards to send to that special someone with Turner member Kathy Cleveland. We will make some cards to send to the FiftyForward Meals on Wheels clients, which is sure to make their day. This month is country music legend, Johnny Cash’s, birthday, and to celebrate come with us to the Johnny Cash Museum and explore 3rd Ave, including lunch at Sun Dinner or Luigi’s City Pizza and stop at the Goo Goo Shop. Join the Foodies for dinner at Capitol Grille and then head to TPAC for the ballet show, “Attitude,” which features the Nashville Ballet dancing to the songs of Johnny Cash performed live by Nashville’s own Sugar + The Hi-Lows. Sign up as soon as possible to secure your spot. February is Black History Month and to celebrate we have several trips planned. See the Oscar nominated film, Hidden Figures, the incredible untold story of brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history. Travel with us to FiftyForward’s Madison Station for the Tasty Tuesday luncheon and performance by the Zeta Rho Men’s Quarter from Fisk University. Finally, take a tour at the historic Fisk University of The Carl Van Vechten Art Gallery and the Library’s Special Collections exhibit of the Jubilee Singers. We look forward to celebrating with you! Friday, February 24, 2017 at 9:00 am – “The Perfect 36” – Yoshi Lewis, Director and Producer, will preview her new film titled “The Perfect 36” which will air on public television beginning in March. The film follows events that led up to the Women’s Right to Vote where Tennessee was the thirty-sixth and deciding vote for approval of the 19 th amendment to our constitution. FRIDAY FLICKS Friday, February 24th at 1:00pm Free Popcorn and Drinks “The Notebook” Directed by Nick Cassavetes, this adaptation of author Nicholas Sparks' bestselling novel revolves around Noah Calhoun's (James Garner) regular visits to a female patron (Gena Rowlands) of an area nursing home. Rather than bore her with the inanities of everyday life, Calhoun reads from an old, faded notebook containing the sweeping account of a young couple (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) whose love affair was tragically put to a halt after their separation in the midst of World War II. Seven years later, the couple was reunited, and, despite having taken radically different paths, they found themselves unable to resist the call of a second chance.
