Russel Ballard As a staff, we believe this quote emulates our community at the Turner Center. We are so grateful for the helping hands and love you bring to FiftyForward and the Bellevue community. This month we want to highlight one of the ways long-time member, Charlotte Branstetter, has left a legacy at FiftyForward by sharing her joy and continuing to bring people together.
Charlotte Branstetter, a founding and prominent member of the Turner Center, had a passion for art and painting classes, and she loved sharing that passion with members at FiftyForward. Unfortunately, Charlotte passed away on August 14th at the age of 93.
However, her loving heart and legacy lives on at FiftyForward. After her passing, her children set up the Charlotte Branstetter Memorial Art Fund in her name, specifically for the J.L. Turner Center. Through this fund, we have raised approximately $5,000 to use for an 8-week art course titled, “Painting From Nature,” with our wonderful instructor, Kim Lane. We are excited to announce that this free course will be starting in February and will continue through March. We’ll end the course with an art show and reception in which the Branstetter family will be invited to see how Charlotte’s legacy lives on. Letter from the Office & Volunteer Manager… Happy February! This is the month of love and FiftyForward wants to spread the love with some great programming and volunteer opportunities. For this month’s service project, we will be making valentines for Meals on Wheels clients to show them we’re thinking about them. Come join us for a fun project and feel free to make some Valentine’s cards for your loved ones as well. In the next few weeks keep your eyes peeled for our 2017 Program Survey. It will be available in hard copy here at the Center, and we will be sending them out electronically as well. We would love to get your feedback about the past year’s programming and events. All your feedback provides us with more insight into your interests so we can better serve you with our educational speakers, day trips, programming, and events. As a staff, we are dedicated to bringing you the best programming and this is your opportunity to let us know your thoughts directly and anonymously. Letter from the Director… 2018 is in full swing, and we have so many exciting things happening at Turner. We’ll close out January with our “preview party” and head straight into February. One event you won’t want to miss is a visit from renowned eye surgeon, Dr. Ming Wang, who will be doing an educational talk on Vision Care on the 22nd. Dr. Wang was recently named Nashvillian of the Year by the Kiwanis, and FiftyForward gave him our Crowning Achievement Award in 2017 for his work with older adults. I’m also excited to announce 2 new art projects we’ll be doing over the next few months. First is a series of classes by Kim Lane made possible by the Charlotte Branstetter Memorial Art Fund. The second is our ongoing work on beaded blankets for the Nick Cave FEAT. performance at the Schermerhorn in April. We’d love to get more folks involved and will have ongoing beading available in the lobby soon. One thing I wanted to mention is the status of the AARP tax-aide program. Unfortunately, as of our print deadline, we don’t have much new information. I do know, from speaking to them several months ago, that they are down yet another volunteer leader from last year. So not only will we not be a site again this year, but they are also going to have to cut another site as well in the county. As of yet, they have not provided a list of alternate sites, but when they do we will get that information out there. If anyone is a retired tax professional or accountant and would be interested in being a volunteer site coordinator, I can give you the contact info for AARP. Letter from the Program Director… We had so much fun bringing in the new year with all of you at our various events, programs, and trips in January. We’ve already hit the ground running in 2018, and I have a great feeling that this will be a wonderful year for all of us at the Turner Center. We plan on visiting some of our favorite spots in Nashville this month, and we’d love for you to brave the chilly weather and join us. We’ll take trips to the Symphony to see a live dress rehearsal, tour the MNPD Forensic Lab, visit Frothy Monkey for a coffee tasting, and even spend some time at the famous Marathon Village. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to visit unique shops, including the History Channels’ American Pickers, enjoy wine tasting at the Grinder’s Switch Winery, taste chocolates at Bang Candy Company, and even visit the Motor Works Museum. We are also excited to host our “Spread the Love” Valentine’s Day Concert. We’ll provide live music and yummy refreshments for you to enjoy and all the proceeds for the concert will be donated to Thistle Farms. Help us give back to the community and spread the love this February. Tickets are $5.00 and can be purchased with a FiftyForward staff or ambassador. We’d love for you to join us for one of our events at the Center. We have lots of speakers and activities for you. Be sure to check out our newsletter and/or sign-up table in the Turner Lobby for a list of all we have planned. And, as always, we are so grateful for your support and participation. Join us on Friday mornings at 9:00am for coffee and lectures about various historical topics. Friday, February 2, 2018 at 9:00 am – “East Tennessee Bridge Burners” – Richard White, Curator of 18th & 19th Century Tennessee History at the Tennessee State Museum, will discuss the guerrilla operations carried out during the Civil War by Union sympathizers in Confederate-held East Tennessee in 1861. The operations called for the destruction of nine strategic railroad bridges followed by an invasion of the area by Union Army forces from southeastern Kentucky. Friday, February 9, 2018 at 9:00 am – “Brentwood Library Archaeology Project” – Mike C. Moore, Director of the Tennessee Department of Archaeology, will discuss excavation at the Brentwood Library site off Concord that dates to the late prehistoric Mississippian period. Mike will discuss what was discovered along with various issue including the recovery of human burials and will touch on the Kellytown project as well as provide information on several prehistoric sites in the immediate Bellevue area. Friday, February 16, 2018 at 9:00 am – “Governors of Tennessee” – Dr. Bill McKee, Provost and Vice President of Cumberland University and Commissioner with the Metro Historic Commission, will present a timely based theme on the upcoming contested races in both the Republican and Democratic primaries. Additionally, Tennessee has some interesting folks who have served in that office. Dr. McKee’s talk as always will be both informative and entertaining. Friday, February 23, 2018 at 9:00 am – “The Last Act But One: Union Perspectives on the Battle of Nashville” – Brian Allison, Author and Historian, suggests that the Battle of Nashville is sometimes regarded as a “perfect battle.” In this presentation we’re going to examine the battle through the eyes of the victorious Union army and show that the story was far from the foregone conclusion that many think it was. We'll look at the motley crew of soldiers and generals who came together and through skill and teamwork managed to strike the finishing blow in the war in Tennessee.

FRIDAY FLICKS Friday, February 23rd at 1:00pm Free Popcorn and Drinks The true life story of Megan Leavey, a young Marine corporal whose unique discipline and bond with a military combat dog saved many lives during her deployment in Iraq. Assigned to clean up the K-9 unit after a disciplinary hearing, Leavey starts to identify with Rex, a particularly aggressive dog that she trains. Over the course of their service, Megan and Rex complete more than 100 missions until an improvised explosive device injures both, putting their fates in jeopardy.
In partnership with the Frist and their new exhibit by Nick Cave, we will be engaging in a 3 month long community art project titled, Blanket Statement. During this project we will create three beaded blankets that will be used in a live performance at the Schermerhorn in April. Every Thursday from January-March, we will be working on these blankest from 10:00-11:00am in the conference room. Stop by for any (or all) of these dates to learn more about the project, participate, and engage with the FiftyForward community.

Dine Out to Donate! Thanks to our fundraising chair, Matt Creekmore, we are introducing Taste of Bellevue events this year. We will be partnering with various restaurants in the area who have agreed to provide a generous donation to our Center in exchange for our business. These events are an INCREDIBLE way to help support our Center and local businesses, so let’s PACK these restaurants & show our support to them and FiftyForward. Our first event is coming up, so mark your calendars. Our goal is to have at least 30 members attend for breakfast and more for lunch & dinner!
