Making Time for Meharry Medical Students The FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center is proud to welcome students from Meharry Medical College for a visit to the facility in February. For the past several years, a group of Meharry Medical students has visited to observe active older adults while they participate in exercise classes, groups, and other programs. This observation, and occasional participation in the programs, is an essential part of their curriculum. The Meharry Medical students will be at the center on Wednesday, February 17 to mingle with members, ask some questions, and observe some activities to gain an understanding of these aspects of active older adult life and how they relate to health outcomes. So, from 10:15 am—12:15 pm we hope you will join us in welcoming these bright young future physicians!
Creative Volunteerism The FiftyForward J. L Turner Center is excited to welcome Tamara Kreigh to our team! Tamara will be the new Member Relations and Volunteer Manager. She comes to us with lots of volunteer management experience in several different settings. Tamara loves working in the non-profit industry and has a passion for working with older adults and fulfilling needs in the community through volunteerism. She also enjoys developing relationships with members and developing programs to meet their needs. Tamara considers herself to be a creative person and loves coming up with program ideas! We look forward to her joining our team!

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
I hope this finds you all warm and safe after the unusual amount of snow that we received in recent days! Was it not beautiful? And, the snow brings up something that I would like to address. FiftyForward has an established Inclement Weather Policy. Please find it outlined on the next page. This policy is put into place in order to protect the safety of our members, who are all 50 years of age or older. If Metro Nashville Public Schools are closed, we must cancel all programs, activities, events and trips. So, we ask that you not come to the Center on those days, even if you think you can safely get here and/or the Bellevue Family YMCA is open, so that we can assure your safety. Please abide by this policy and request. We absolutely can’t have members come to anything in our Center on days that State Offices are closed and we are completely closed, even though the Bellevue Family YMCA may be open. On another more positive note, we are so excited about the changes that are taking place in our Center in the next few days. Jamie McCone, our Intern from MTSU, has already begun her time with us as of January 25th. Jamie will be working with us on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. And, our new staff member, Tamara Kreigh, will be joining us no later than February 1st, maybe before. Tamara will be serving in our new position of Member Relations and Volunteer Manager. You all will love both Tamara and Jamie. Make it a point to meet them as soon as you can! And, we are making several changes in the way we will have our Turner Center lobby set up and our signup sheets displayed. Starting February 1st, we will have sign-up sheets all along the walls of the lobby of our Center. We will have the sign-up sheets displayed by our new program categories. We will have the following categories of programming: Day Trips, Education/Life-long Learning, Social/Recreational Events (which will include all games such as Canasta, Rummikub, etc.), Health/Wellness, Community Events, and Volunteer Opportunities. We will offer all the Silver Sneakers Classes, in partnership with the Bellevue Family YMCA, as our Physical Fitness/Exercise programming and will not have sign-up sheets for those classes. It is really helpful to us in our planning for everyone to sign up for all the programming they plan to attend, and is a requirement if food is involved. We have lots of opportunities for you to volunteer within our Center, and we desperately need and want your help. Please look for those opportunities when they are displayed and volunteer when/where you can. I look forward to seeing each of you often in our Center during February! -Susan

Only seven or eight of her more than 1770 poems were published in her lifetime. In contrast Robert Frost seldom passed up an opportunity to be seen and heard. He was a frequent visitor to colleges and universities and at age 86 read a poem at John F. Kennedy's inauguration. This will be a look at representative poems from two of our most respected poets. AARP Tax assistance is back at the Turner Center this year! Starting February 1st, the volunteer tax preparers will be at the Turner Center on Mondays from 9:00 am—2:00 pm.
