The holidays are the perfect time to celebrate friends and family. Check out some of our favorite holiday events from November, then see how you can get involved in the fun this month. We hosted our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon and had 60 members come to celebrate with us. They enjoyed a delicious catered meal by one of our very own members, Jeannie Horde and her business, Cooking Generations, Inc. The afternoon was complete with live music from singer, Bill Bitou. It was a wonderful afternoon shared with the FiftyForward family and a great start to the Thanksgiving holiday. We had a great time celebrating our service men & women at our first annual Veteran’s Day Breakfast. We kicked off the event with the national anthem performed by the Nashville Christian School Choir & the presentation of the flag by two of our very own members. Our Veterans enjoyed a delicious meal of pancakes, bacon & baked goods while listening to WWII veteran, Thomas King, discuss his experience as a fighter pilot. It was a wonderful event & great way to celebrate their service.

Letter from the Office & Volunteer Manager… Happy December! Welcome to the jolliest month of the year. I’m really excited for all the volunteer opportunities we have going on, and I hope you all are too! This month we will be doing two service projects, both of which I am extremely excited about. First, we will be traveling to the Knowles Center to sort, assign, and wrap gifts for the children of the veterans served by the Nashville Vet Center. Second, we will be going back to the Knowles Center to serve a holiday meal for the Nashville Vet Center. Hopefully you will have the opportunity to join us for one of the two projects this month. Our partnership with the Vet Center also extends to our Toy Drive which will run from November 8 th until Thursday, December 7th. All the proceeds will benefit the children of the Tennessee Veterans served by the Vet Center. Since 2012, your generosity has given 80-100 children Christmas gifts each year, and we hope to keep that going this season. Look for our green donation bin in the lobby to drop off your gifts and donations- every little bit helps! As always, please feel free to stop by my office and see me if you have any questions or suggestions.

Letter from the Director… Season Greetings! As the weather turns colder and the Christmas lights and music engulf our every waking moment, it’s hard not to get into a festive mood, and we are jammed packed with activities this month that will give you the chance to celebrate. Chief amongst them is the annual AOA Christmas Party on December 18th, our largest gathering of the year, where we all come together to enjoy amazing food and spread holiday cheer. Make sure you sign up with Regena Hooker with the YMCA to secure your spot. Of course with the holidays comes gifts, and many of you may be receiving a new gadget in your stocking this year. If you find that using that new piece of technology is a little daunting, or you just want some tips and tricks, folks from the Bellevue Branch Library will be here both before and after Christmas to provide one on one technology help. They will be here December 4th, and again in January. I also want to thank all our members, volunteers, and staff that make the Turner Center such a wonderful place to be. I truly enjoy getting to work, serve, laugh, and live life amongst all of you. I wish you all a joyous, warm, and safe holiday season. I know I am taking this time to reflect on the great memories of the past year, and I look forward to an amazing 2018.

Last month, we had a wonderful time honoring our military men and women at the Veteran’s Day Breakfast and sharing a meal with all of you at the Thanksgiving Luncheon, but that was just the start. We still have plenty more planned for you for this holiday season. One of my favorite things about December is the holiday music, and we plan on bringing the music to you this month. We have not one, but TWO concerts for you to attend. First, our very own Retro Rhythm Band will be performing their much anticipated Christmas Concert, “A Special Winter’s Night.” Then, we will have Heart to Heart & Doug Thornton perform holiday favorites as a part of their Christmas Celebration Tour in our second Concert, Coffee & Doughnuts event.
Of course, we have some fun trips planned for you as well. I’m excited about our Holiday Lights Trolley tour through downtown Franklin and our lunch and tour of the Aquarium Restaurant led by a certified marine biologist. And I know all of you have been anxiously awaiting the Shinndig concert and lunch, so make sure to sign-up fast before tickets run out. We will continue our classes on various religions this month. We’re excited to host A Seat at the Table, a dinner and guided conversation about faith across various cultures, and we will also have a speaker from the Sri Ganesha temple give a Hindu 101 presentation. These presentations have been quite popular in the past, so if you haven’t had the opportunity to attend, I’d encourage you to try one this month! It has been so much fun celebrating all these wonderful events and holidays at the Center with all of you. I have loved seeing all your notes on the gratitude board and your participation in our activities. In recent years the Templars have been the frequent subject of intricate conspiracies about hidden treasures, forbidden religious knowledge, or Masonic connections. This lecture will separate fact from fiction to tell the true history of these fascinating medieval warriors. Friday, December 8, 2017 at 9:00 am – “Thirty Years of Sports Reporting in Nashville and Middle Tennessee” – Rudy Kalis, WSMV Sports Director, will reflect on how the sports scene in Nashville and middle Tennessee has changed over his thirty-year career at WSMV. Friday, December 15, 2017 at 9:00 am – “150 Years Along Harding Pike” – Ridley Wills, Author. Back by popular demand, Ridley Wills will share stories about the characters and events along Nashville’s Harding Pike. His latest book, Volume 3 of his Nashville Pikes series, documents the complex and fascinating history of this major thoroughfare, from its origins from West End to the Warner Parks. FRIDAY FLICKS Friday, December 22 at 1:00pm Free Popcorn and Drinks Belle (Emma Watson), a bright, beautiful, and independent young woman, is taken prisoner by a beast (Dan Stevens) in its castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle's enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the beast's hideous exterior, allowing her to recognize the kind heart and soul of the true prince that hides on the inside. The holidays are here and what better way to celebrate than by giving back to the community. FiftyForward RSVP is offering Turner Center members three ways to spread holiday cheer to local veterans this month. 1. Bring in a toy between Nov. 8th & Dec. 7th to donate to the annual Holiday Toy Drive. These toys will be distributed to families of the Nashville Vet Center. A donation bin is located in the Turner Lobby. 2. Sign-up to attend the annual volunteer gift wrapping event on December 11th to help sort, assign, and wrap donated toys. All materials and a light lunch will be provided 3. Volunteer to serve a meal to Veterans at the annual Vet Center Holiday Lunch on December 13th.
