In late October the Retro Rhythms stopped by on their “Island In Our Dreams Tour.� Thank you to Rise Tucker and the band for your hard work and dedication for this amazing program. We had a record-breaking turnout. Center programs were showcased along with a variety of talented people.
We had a wonderful time celebrating Thanksgiving early. We are always happy we get the opportunity to show our gratitude for our members. Thank you to Jeannie & Jim Horde for catering the delicious meal.

Turner Center and look forward to sharing a wonderful holiday season with you. It feels like having another family, and it is also like an ever-evolving party. From feisty games and energizing exercise to creative projects and fascinating trips, there are many opportunities to cultivate friendships and create good memories together in December. One of the greatest gifts we can give during the holiday season is our time, our energy, and our encouragement—the gift of being who we are and of being with each other. This time of the year offers many ways to welcome and embrace all the diverse and delightful members of our community. Because of the universal nature of holiday traditions and celebrations, we have a chance to reach out to one another despite our differences, practicing a true hospitality of the heart. Holiday Hours In recognition of the holidays, FiftyForward offices are closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 1. We look forward to beginning the new year with you by offering lively programs and activities as well as resources to support, champion and enhance lives for those 50 and older.

If Metro Schools are closed the Center will close and all events or trips that day will be cancelled. Contact the YMCA for their hours of operation.

Day trips must have at least six sign-ups for the trip to go. Trips cancelled for attendance or weather will be determined the day before. All those signed up will be called and given a refund or credit

You must cancel up to 24 hours in advance to receive credit for a missed trip.

Letter from the Director… Season’s Greetings to All! As the weather has turned colder, and the Christmas lights and music engulf our every waking moment, it’s hard not to get into a festive mood, and we are jammed packed with activities this month that will give you the chance to celebrate. Keep an eye on the dates posted for our Holiday Closures this year, and check with the YMCA for their hours. Additionally make sure if you are interested in attending the Shinn Dig this year, that you pay attention to the slightly different way we will be distributing tickets this year. This is one of the most popular annual events for senior adults, and we get a limited amount of tickets, and want to get them out in the fairest way possible. Also, a special recognition and announcement, at the end of the year Janet Jernigan will be retiring as the Executive Director of FiftyForward after 28 years, and incredible tenure in which she expanded the reach and resources of FiftyForward from two centers to the one of premiere nonprofits in Middle Tennessee with 7 centers and dozens of programs and services. She will be succeeded by Sallie Hussey, who actually began her nonprofit career in the FiftyForward development department and has since gone on to very successful tenures with The Next Door Inc. and Bridges For the Deaf and Hard Of Hearing. I also want to thank everyone; all our members, Advisory Council, volunteers, community partners and staff that make the Turner Center such a wonderful place to be. I truly enjoy getting to work, serve, laugh, and live life amongst all of you. I wish you all a joyous, warm, and safe holiday season. I know I am taking this time to reflect on the great memories of the past year, and look forward to an amazing 2019.

Letter from the Program Director… It’s hard to believe it’s the end of the year. We are so excited to spend the holidays with you all. We have a ton of fun activities planned for this month so be sure to stop in and sign up. We have a few fun day trips to celebrate the holiday season. First, we will be heading to the Governor’s Mansion for a tour of their beautifully decorated grounds. Secondly, we will be going downtown to experience TubaChristmas— a tuba & euphonium group that will play classic Christmas songs. We will also be going to Lipscomb University for the much-anticipated Shinndig on December 14th. Keep your eyes peeled for the date that we will be releasing tickets. We will be putting that information on our My Senior Center kiosk as well as via email. We want the ticket process to be as fair as possible for all members. If you want to beat the cold and stay in the Center we have plenty of opportunities for that as well. A violin duo from the Nashville Symphony will be here to perform on Wednesday, December 5th at 10:30am. Come drink some coffee and enjoy the relaxing, beautiful sounds of the Symphony. In addition, we have a couple opportunities to get creative. Our wonderful member and volunteer, Kathy, will be facilitating a card workshop. So come make some beautiful handmade holiday cards for your friends & family. Ginger from Kroger Floral will be back for another flower arrangement class. This one will have a fun holiday twist! Friday, December 14, 2018 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm – SEASON-ENDING POTLUCK LUNCHEON – “Life on Mars” – Dr. David Weintraub, Vanderbilt University Astronomy Professor and Author, will discuss the possibility of life on Mars. Life on Mars: What to Know Before We Go – The story of the search for life on Mars and the moral issues confronting us as we prepare to send humans there. Does life exist on Mars? The question has captivated humans for centuries, but today it has taken on new urgency. NASA plans to send astronauts to Mars orbit by the 2030s. SpaceX wants to go by 2024, while Mars One wants to land a permanent settlement there in 2032. As we gear up for missions like these, we have a responsibility to think deeply about what kinds of life may already inhabit the planet–and whether we have the right to invite ourselves in.
