The Holiday Season is already in full swing at the center for every season turn, turn turns at Turner. As the fall leaves hit their peak, a group of adventurers took to the trails at Timberland Park. They explored the 2-year-old park and Nature Center with guide Michael Culbreth, learning about different trees and plants.

As the weather stayed warmer than usual for the time of year, two groups visited the Schermerhorn Symphony Center to watch the Curb Open Dress Rehearsals of Mozart and Rachmanioff. The Friday Night Foodies hit the 12 South District for authentic Lebanese food at Epice. The Center closed out November with the Thanksgiving Luncheon bringing with it food, music and gratitude.

GET INVOLVED Volunteer Opportunities THE GREEN TEAM: The FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center is partnered with Metro Waste Management to help keep Bellevue’s Recycling Center clean & safe. Volunteers cover a day of the week to drive through & check on the center. If the area is in need of attention you will report any issues to us & we will notify the Metro Waste Management. AMBASSADOR: Oversees the Tuner Lobby. Registers members for special events & trips. Answers questions & make event reminder calls. Assists with event set-up. SUBSTITUTE AMBASSDOR: Fills in for regular ambassadors when needed. VOLUNTEER DRIVER: Drive van for center trips. Complete driver training & background check. Trip cost is free for drivers including meals. CLASS INSTRUCTOR: Lead social, recreational, educational or health & wellness activities for members. TELEPHONE REASSURANCE: Part of a committee that contacts any members that have not been seen or heard from in a while to make sure they are doing well. Letter from the Director… When I think about the holidays, I think of giving; and not just gifts, but giving back. This is the time of year a lot of us reflect on the good things in our lives and try to give back. If you are looking for ways to do that there are several opportunities here at the center. On December 1st we are going to the Knowles Center for a wrapping party for the RSVP toy drive that benefits the Nashville Vet Center. It’s the toys collected in the green bin we had out in November. We’re also looking for some ongoing volunteer support at the center. We have needs in several areas. One that is critical is our green team. We receive a very generous continuing grant from Metro Waste Services, that helps keep our busses running. Our part of that is a team that checks the condition of the Bellevue Recycling Drop Off Site. It only takes a few minutes once a week, please see us if you’d like to help out. One of my favorite things about the holidays is spending time with the people I love and care about and I can’t think of a better place to be than here at the J.L. Turner Center. I have continued to feel so welcomed by everyone and appreciate all the great program ideas. We have many programs throughout this month to share quality time in community with one another, so I hope you can join us! I am excited to share two particular events this month that highlight the talents of our very own Turner members, Mercy Evans and Mary Margaret Lambert. Mercy has been working hard for months constructing a massive Christmas Village display. We will be taking a van ride over to see her incredible work on Tuesday, December 6th. Mary Margaret has published a book “Life Is Too Short To Wear Biege” and will be in the Turner Lobby on Friday, December 9th to sell and autograph copies. I am looking forward to getting my hands on one.
We will be making some crafts this month and I hope you can join Bellevue Librairian, K’Lani Green in making Snowman Snow Gauges on December 14th and join me in creating festive Wreaths on December 8th. Some fun trips this month include a viewing of “White Christmas” at the Franklin Theater December 12th with lunch at Merridee’s Breadbasket before the show and the Music For Seniors Concert featuring Nashville Harmony and a sing-along of carols and songs at the Frist Center on December 19th. Stop by the center to see our new program display board and see all the ways you can “Get Excited”, “Get Connected” and “Get Involved” this month and beyond. Retro Rhythms Concert: Wednesday Dec. 14th 10:30am
Songs of the Season Free Concert in the Community Room Come celebrate the holiday season with THE RETRO RHYTHMS, the J.L. Turner Center’s very own rhythm band. Sit back, relax and snack on some sweet treats while the band plays some sweet beats to a variety of Christmas favorites. From traditional carols to a swinging spiritual sung by Peter, Paul and Mary and selected dances from “The Nutcracker,” the band will have you tapping your feet and feeling the holiday vibe. As a free-lance writer for the Tennessee Register since 1986, a Native Nashvillian and FiftyForward member, Mary Margaret Lambert has written about many topics in her Pinch of Faith column. At the urging of many readers, she has compiled a collection of her writings into her first book, "Life Is Too Short To Wear Beige". The chapter topics include her insights and observations on nature, marriage, family life, illnesses and personal tragedy. The vignettes will amuse, inspire, and touch your heart.
The Sit & Knit Group has recently added Crochet. Teacher Jaci Kitch will show you all you need to know to get started.

The Christmas Village J.L. Turner Center member, Mercy Evans has assembled a miniature display at the Bellevue Baptist Church. There are approximately 170 structures, 700+ tress and 100s upon 100s of people, animals and other decorative elements. Construction and assembly of the village began on September 4, and represents over 400 hours of work. Sign up and join a group of members on Tuesday, December 6th at 9:30am to see the beautiful display firsthand. Van $2 and Lunch on your own.

Friday, December 2, 2016 at 9:00 am – “Nashville's Streetcars and Interurban Railways” – Ralcon Wagner, Author and Historian, will discuss his new book about the history of Nashville’s street railways (1866 – 1941) with a PowerPoint presentation showing images from the book followed by a question and answer session. Books will be available for purchase and signing afterwards at a cost of $20. Friday, December 9, 2016 at 11:30 am – SEASON-END POT-LUCK LUNCHEON – Featured Speaker – Brian Allison, Author, Historian, and Public Speaker – “Murder and Mayhem in Nashville” – Brian will discuss his new book. Nashville is known for its bold, progressive flair, but few are aware of the city's malevolent past. A rowdy red-light district called "Smoky Row" spawned several fatal episodes. A murderous temptress with a penchant for poison once strolled the city streets.
