We had a creative afternoon celebrating spring early by creating stained glass designs at our Easter craft day. Members, Patty and our mystery Easter bunny, showed off their finished product.

The National Museum of African American Music stopped by to show us how to turn “Nothing Into Something.” Members listened as the volunteers told interesting stories and facts behind the instrument of spoons. We worked hard and had a fun afternoon at the St. Luke’s Community House food bank. We assembled food boxes for families in need in the Nashville area, and learned more about their organization.

“Have you ever wished that medications and treatments could be more effective for everyone? Then don’t miss this opportunity to hear Dr. Andrea Ramirez from Vanderbilt Health present on precision medicine, health care based on each individual. It takes into account factors like where you live, what you do, and your family health history. To make health care better, we need to learn more about the differences that make each of us unique.

We will have a FREE Brunch & Learn w/ Dr. Ramirez on Monday, April 16th at 10:30am. Come learn more about Precision Medicine, its history, and why it’s relevant to you! If interested, please sign up on the clipboard in the Turner Lobby.

Free Blood Pressure Checks: Mondays from 9:00 AM—11:00 AM. Have your blood pressure checked by John Waters, a retired registered nurse.

Letter from the Director… I don’t know about all of you, but I am more than happy to say goodbye to winter. Spring allows for all kinds of opportunities to get out and explore our beautiful city and region. So make sure you look over some of the great outdoor activities we have planned this month. I also am so excited for our big Dance and Social we’re looking to have in September. The details are still coming together, but this is going to be our first big “Signature Event” and fundraiser for the Turner Center. You can be involved in a variety of ways as we get closer, beginning this month by helping us choose the theme! We want this to be OUR event as a community, so we want exactly what it will be to be shaped by your voices and votes. Whatever the theme ends up being, we hope to hold dance classes here at the center in the weeks leading up to the event in the style we choose. This is going to be a big, fun, community event and we’re excited to get it going. The Aging Mastery Program, which was a big success here at Turner last year, is right around the corner again. This year Turner will not be one of the hosting sites, but the program is still open to us. There are sessions at 4 FiftyForward centers, including a session in August at the Martin Center for which we will provide FREE transportation. If you have any questions regarding AMP please see me.

Best regards, Derek Stogner Director, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center

Letter from the Office & Volunteer Manager, February has been such a fun month, but I’m ready for some warmer weather! Big thank you to everyone who came to our service project at St. Luke’s Community House. It was hard work, but we had a wonderful afternoon giving back to our community! I am SO excited about our service project this month. In accordance with Earth Day on April 22nd we will be painting flower pots and planting flowers to take to the Middle Tennessee Hospice Center to give to patients and their families to brighten their day or to welcome them into their establishment. Their staff is so excited we thought of them, and as a cause near and dear to my heart I am thrilled to have the opportunity to give back to them and hopefully put a smile on someone’s face. Thanks to the Branstetter Art Fund we will be holding a second round of art classes at no cost to you. This month our art teacher, Kim Lane, will be teaching abstract painting techniques focusing on colors and textures. All the paintings from last month’s art course were amazing, and I can’t wait to see how these turn out! As always, if you’re interested in getting involved with FiftyForward, our office doors are always open and we would love to talk to you about opportunities at the Center.

Thank you,

Nikki Plotts Office & Volunteer Manager, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center
