Health and Wellbeing Free Blood Pressure Screenings: Mondays from 9:00 am—11:00 am in the lobby Frame Drum Wisdom Sound Circle: Tuesday, April 26 at 9:00 am $15 if registered by April 22. Fee after April 22 is $20. A Frame Drum Sound Circle is a an interactive therapeutic experience where participants are encouraged to sing, sound and drum in an easy, fun way.

Qigong: Tuesdays at 10:00 am. A Chinese method of breathing for relaxation.

Reiki Appointments: Tuesdays at 11:00 am. $15 for 20 min. $22 for 30 min. A healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient's body and restore physical and emotional wellbeing.

Life Coaching: Thursdays from 9:00 am—3:00 pm. $50 for a 45 minute appointment.

Happy Spring Everyone!

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I want to start this month’s message on a personal note. As many of you know, my 89 year old Mother is a member of the FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center/Bellevue Family YMCA and has been very active here the last several months. A couple of weeks ago she suffered a heart attack, along with dehydration, followed by congestive heart failure. She is currently in a nursing home for rehabilitation. The outpouring of love that many of you have shown to both my Mother and I has been amazing and I thank you from the bottom of my heart! My Mother continues to talk about the incredible friendships that she has built during the short time that she has been active at this Center. And, that is why I brought this all up.

Massive amounts of research findings indicate that the most important thing that we can do for our health and well-being is to be connected to other people socially. Not only does it add quality to our lives, but it adds years to them. This Center has provided a pathway to that social connection, those friendships, to my Mother and hundreds of others. There are wonderful people that are active here. The more things that you participate in through our Center, the more friends you will make, and the quality of those friendships will continue to grow. Many of the things that experts tell us to do to improve our quality of life and/or extend our lives are hard work. Isn’t it amazing that there is something very powerful that we can do that is fun, easy and enjoyable!

Candace, Jamie and I work diligently to try to bring a large and varied amount of programming to you in nine different areas. I highly encourage you to take part in as many things as you possibly can. Step outside your comfort zone. Try an activity or class that you have never participated in or been interested in before.

At the least, you will be exposed to different people that can add quality to your life.

On a final note, I am pleased to announce that we have hired our wonderful intern, Jamie McCone, to fill the position of J. L. Turner Center Member Relations and Volunteer Manager. Jamie will officially become part of our team on a part-time basis beginning on April 18th. Then, on May 9th, after her graduation from MTSU, she will be with us full-time! Congratulations and welcome Jamie! Let’s all make her feel welcome and help her transition easily into her new role!

We are thrilled to announce that our wonderful intern, Jamie McCone, has accepted the position of Member Relations and Volunteer Manager with the FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center! Jamie has been the center intern since January and has wowed us from day one with her enthusiasm, commitment, initiative and positivity. We look forward to watching her grow with us in her new role! Friday, April 8, 2016 at 9:00 am (CE) – “Ripley’s Believe It or Not – Baseball Oddities and Trivia” – Tim O’Brien, Author and Photo-Journalist, has written multiple books for Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Disney Imaginers, Amusement Parks, Zoos and Aquariums. Friday, April 15, 2016 at 9:00 am (FF1) – “The Sly Fox of Kinderhook in Old Hickory's Backyard” – Dr. Mark Cheathem, Professor of History and Project Director for the Papers of Martin Van Buren at Cumberland University, will discuss the Cumberland’s new project to edit Martin Van Buren's papers which will help us understand how the New Yorker contributed to Andrew Jackson's America.

Friday, April 22, 2016 at 9:00 am (CE) – Historical Movie – “Unsung Heroes: The Story of America’s Female Patriots” – From the Revolutionary War until today, women have shed their blood in defense of America. Their sacrifices are profound and noble and have been largely ignored. 105 minutes.

Friday, April 29, 2016 at 9:00 am (FF1) – “Ancestry Annals and the Need to Photograph Historical Cemeteries” – George Collier will describe how his desire to include photos of each ancestor's tombstone has driven the need to photograph ALL tombstones in several historical cemeteries along with how to share this information with fellow researchers. Finally, George will cover how his efforts have transitioned into an effort to photograph (and publish) tombstones found in each of the 45+ 19th-century cemeteries located within the Bellevue area of Davidson County.
