September is Healthy Aging Month a time to focus on all aspects of growing older To be as healthy as we can be, we all benefit from staying active, maintaining a healthy diet, having regular check ins with our medical providers, and engaging socially with others. We recognize that our mental health and outlook on life are as important as our physical health when we think about healthy aging. And some of us struggle, understandably, to maintain a positive and hopeful outlook on life This month, FiftyForward is raising awareness about the risks of suicide among older adults. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death, and older adults are especially vulnerable. According to National Public Radio, men who are 65 and older face the highest overall rate of suicide

At FiftyForward, we help older adults to live their best lives through:

Mid August 2022, the CDC updated and streamlined its COVID 19 guidance full information about the updated guidance here: https://www cdc gov/media/releases/2022/p0811

The main points of this update are:

Important Center Information

As of this time, masks remain optional at FiftyForward locations. Everyone who chooses to wear a mask will be supported completely. We continue to pay close attention to guidance from government and health officials, and our mask policy may change again in the future if the situation with COVID-19 transmission in our community changes. Please speak with staff if you have any questions about our mask policy.

Regardless of vaccination status, individuals who have COVID 19, or suspect they do, should isolate themselves from others for periods detailed in the guidance and consult a doctor if they have severe illness or a weakened immune system

The evidence remains clear that the best way to prevent serious COVID 19 illness is to be fully vaccinated and up to date with your COVID 19 vaccinations Visit one of the Metro COVID vaccine and testing clinics at a FiftyForward location (see details above) to be sure you are doing all you can to keep yourself, your loved ones, and our community safe COVID-19 – Updated CDC guidance

Instead of quarantining when exposed to COVID 19, individuals exposed should wear a high quality mask for ten days and get tested on day 5

See

FiftyForward is partnering with the Metro Nashville Public Health Department to provide free, no appointment COVID testing and vaccination clinics You can visit one of our three FiftyForward host sites: FiftyForward Donelson Station, Knowles, and Madison Station. We are very excited about this partnership as FiftyForward is committed community safe and to offering easy access to COVID vaccination and COVID vaccination Being up to date means that a person has received and at least one booster dose Second boosters are also available to th immunocompromised. Learn more below.

FiftyForward COVID process update

The updated and streamlined CDC COVID 19 guidelines signal an increased recognition that tools are now available (tests, vaccinations, and masks), which can mitigate the effects of COVID 19 for most of us Most individuals now have a choice and can access COVID 19 vaccines and boosters and use masks as added protection from COVID 19 infection. FiftyForward has aligned with the CDC throughout the pandemic. In continued alignment, we are changing our requirements for volunteers and instructors at our FiftyForward centers. They will no longer be required to provide proof of COVID 19 vaccination to volunteer and instruct in most programs at FiftyForward The exception will be our Adult Day Services program which serves more vulnerable individuals To volunteer at ADS, we will continue to require proof of COVID 19 vaccination If you have any questions about this updated process, please contact Director of Volunteer Engagement Robin Johnson at rjohnson@fiftyforward org

Wood has found particular joy in the comradery among the line dance community. In addition to instructing classes, Bonnie enjoys traveling with FiftyForward members and friends to the Wildhorse Saloon and a monthly barn dance. "I'm not happy sitting at home," said Wood. "I have a mission to help people keep their older years enjoyable," she added.

When asked what advice she has for those of us who hope we'll be dancing the night away at age 84, Wood had this to say, "Go out and get involved in programs. Dancing is great exercise and keeps you young." Wood is just one of the dozens of volunteer instructors who serve at FiftyForward centers. Often older adults themselves, we are grateful to everyone who uses their time and talent to help us broaden our center based exercise, art, and learning opportunities.

Four simple words conjure up endless imaginative storytelling possibilities. Once upon a time, a stuffed bear and his friends walked, talked, and played with a little boy in “Hundred Acre Wood.” Once upon a time, “Pete the Cat” sang about groovy buttons. Once upon a time, “the wind started to blow The tree house started to spin It spun faster and faster Then everything was still. Absolutely still.” Words that make the reader want to know who are the characters? How does the story end?

FiftyForward’s Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) volunteer program brings letters and words to life and turns sentences into stories For over 30 years, older adults and elementary age students have partnered to learn and grow together through reading activities for a school year FLIP is recruiting volunteers age 55+ for this school year. School partners in Davidson and Williamson counties have students in which one-on-one attention at least 30 minutes a week will help develop a love of words and stories and increase confidence in the classroom. Teaching experience is not a requirement. If you love reading and enjoy being around children, reach out to the Volunteer Coordinator in your county. Steps to get involved: meet for an in-person interview, complete a background check, participate in a two hour training session and commit to two hours once a week at a designated school with assigned students for the school year. The program provides resources and supplies. A volunteer story, “Once upon a time, I met an inquisitive and imaginative second grader who loved dinosaurs. He knew all the names of the prehistoric beasts, what they ate, their pecking order in the world, and how they roamed about the earth This same second grader that could tell wonderfully descriptive stories could not read them. Using dinosaur figurines, I worked with the student to break down the barriers to reading that he was stumbling with At the end of the school year, this second grader had fallen in love with reading, and his confidence level soared like a pterodactyl ”
