Letter from the Director
J. L. Turner Center
Hello Members: Thank you to those of you who have been in the Center the last 2 weeks and have been cooperative with us as we launched My Senior Center. After we get you all set up, the rest is so easy! I have been thinking a lot about the mission of FiftyForward, and as a result, I wanted to talk about well-being. There are actually six elements of well-being – physical, social, financial, spiritual, career and community well-being. All six elements are important to your overall happiness and quality of life—so you should be intentional about developing all six elements! For the next several months, you will see us offering many more opportunities for you to develop each of those six areas. We hope that you will take advantage of some, or all, of the opportunities in each area. Research has shown that your life can be seriously negatively impacted if even one of these areas is offbalance. I have enjoyed getting to know more of you in the last month and look forward to getting to know many more of you in the coming weeks. Here is to your health, wellbeing and lifelong learning! Susan
FiftyForward enriches the lives of adults 50+ by providing pathways to health, well-being, and lifelong learning.

2015
**IMPORTANT CHANGES INVOLVING CREDITS EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 1, 2015** WHAT’S THE SAME:
We will continue to honor currently issued credits. **Remember current credits expire three months from their issued date.**
A 24-hour notice (at least) is required for refunds.
WHAT’S DIFFERENT:
The Turner Center will hold payments until the paid event has occurred. For example, if you sign up for a paid event three weeks in advance, it will be at least three weeks before your check clears your bank. If this poses a problem for your bookkeeping, we encourage you to pay with cash until we are able to accept debit/credit cards.
You will receive a refund of the money you have paid in the event of a cancellation. For example: If you paid for an event in cash, you will receive your cash back. If you paid with a check, you will receive your check back.
The Turner Center will no longer be issuing credits for trip/activity/event cancellations (regardless of whether the cancellation is done by a member or the center).
My Senior Center We have talked a lot about My Senior Center, and by now you have hopefully had a chance to use the new system! If you haven’t already filled out a FiftyForward membership form (insert enclosed), we are asking everyone to fill one out and update their information for us— birth date, address, phone numbers, emergency contacts—so that our system will be up-to-date. Thank you for being a member of the Bellevue Family YMCA and FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center and for helping us achieve our mission to enrich the lives of adults 50+ by providing pathways to health, well-being and lifelong learning. PLEASE REMEMBER TO SCAN IN EVERY TIME YOU VISIT THE CENTER!

Go For Orbit Dr. Rhea Seddon Book Signing Event Wednesday, September 2 at 10:30 am
We are “over the moon” to welcome Astronaut Rhea Seddon to the Bellevue Family YMCA and FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center. Join us as we listen to Rhea share her experience of being one of the first female astronauts in the space program. A veteran of three space shuttle flights, Dr. Rhea Seddon sent 19 years with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). In 1978 she was selected as one of the first six women to enter the Astronaut Program. She served as a Mission Specialist on flights in 1985 and 1991 and as Payload Commander in charge of all science activities on her final flight in 1993. This brought her total time in space to 30 days. After leaving NASA in 1997, Dr. Seddon was the Assistant Chief Medical Officer of the Vanderbilt Medical Group in Nashville for 11 years. There she led an initiative aimed at improving patient safety, quality of care, and team effectiveness by the use of an aviation-based model of Crew Resource Management. Now with LifeWings Partners, LLC she teaches this concept to healthcare institutions across the United States. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in physiology, Dr. Seddon received her M.D. degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis, where she completed her residency in General Surgery.
Rhea’s book, Go For Orbit, will be available for purchase here at the center.
