FiftyForward Adult Day Services participants enjoyed their first Sips ‘N Strokes class, led by new activity coordinator Allison Boe. Allison coordinated and instructed the class. For many, it was the first time painting with acrylics. It looks like this activity was a hit with the crowd!

Last fall, with a bit of a nudge from friends, family and a longtime scuba guru, Susan Sizemore earned her scuba certification and finally explored the underwater world.

Susan says of her experience, “In many instances the aquatic adventure was like flying – breathtaking with unique vistas in every direction.

The experience certainly illuminated the fact that there is so much to explore in this world. Dive in!”

The power of three simple words

By Susan W. Sizemore FiftyForward Communications Director The world is Shirley Bachelder’s canvas. At the age of 95 she continues to weave a tapestry of talents and a passion for life that positively impacts the lives of others.

She is a mother of three, a grandmother, an artist and a published author. Having been published by Reader’s Digest, she is now working on a book for caregivers. While caring for her late husband who battled Alzheimer’s disease, she learned firsthand that caregivers need inspiration, motivation and a touch of humor in their lives.

When we interviewed Bachelder at the senior community where she lives, her nametag said it all: “Resident Ambassador.” She runs a “concentration” game, has taught art classes and simply lives life to its fullest; however, her most visible accomplishment to date came in the form of These simple words divine intervention, when she was asked to – Love One Another deliver a simple message of three words to -- have taken on a as many people as possible.

“He told me just what He wanted,” she said.

The message was clear. “Buy five seconds of advertising on primetime television,” she recounted God’s instructions, “and mortgage your house if necessary.

The message needs to be white block letters on a black background to read, ‘love one another.’”

“I worked on it for two years,” she explains. According to Bachelder, things really took off when a conversation in her Sunday school class brought the message to the next level. Stacey Killian Hagewood, a classmate, learned of her desire to place an ad on television. Bachelder recalls, “Stacey said, ‘I will see what I can do,’’’ and she contacted Nashville NBC affiliate WSMV for help.

On April 18, 2016, the Love One Another feature ran on WSMV’s Bulger’s Beat. In his closing remarks, reporter Terry Bulger reminded viewers of Bachelder’s words and mission, by saying “ultimately it’s up to you what you do with her three-word message …”

The timing of the news story resonated in Middle Tennessee because of a recent attack at a nearby military base in Chattanooga. The feature ran and the station received a tremendous amount of feedback. The segment has now gone viral on many media channels. Upworthy, an online media company with a mission “to bring attention to stories that connect and sometimes even change the world,” picked up Bachelder’s message.

We learned about the effort when Hagewood posted an image (see cover shot) of Bachelder and her billboard on Facebook. It seemed Lamar Advertising had also taken notice.

“We love her,” said Victoria Foster, sales manager at Lamar Advertising of Nashville. Foster heard about Bachelder when Cynthia Zordich, photographer, writer and NFL wife, was traveling with her husband Michael and she saw the WSMV story online. She reached out to Bachelder and her family to offer assistance.

Zordich and her daughter Aidan traveled to Tennessee to interview, photograph and film Bacheldor to help her promote her message. Now, they’ve asked people on Facebook to “share until we reach Times Square” (www.facebook. com/loveoneanotherforGod/) Zordich started with Lamar’s corporate office in Baton Rouge. She explained the story she’d seen online, the power of such a simple message and that she was trying to help Bachelder complete one of her bucket list items. Because Bachelder lives here in Tennessee, they referred her to Lamar of Nashville.

“We believe in her message and wanted to help,” said Foster. “There is so much going on in the world. Her message is positive and we want to stand behind her.”

Lamar shared the love in the form of 21 billboards – digital and static – in Middle Tennessee. “We did a big push for as long as we could,” Foster explains, “Some were up for a month or a couple months. We hope to have one message rotating around the city for the rest of the calendar year when we have space.”

While getting these three simple words out to the community took some time, Bachelder is thrilled with the results and said the learning opportunities continue. When her granddaughter said the message had gone “viral,” her initial response was, “Oh my, a virus cannot be a good thing.” She learned otherwise.

With thank you notes from supporters around the world that keep on coming, Bachelder has also been stopped by teenagers who want to take their photo with her after confirming she truly is the ‘love one another’ Shirley.

When we asked how this has changed her life, she laughingly said, “It’s hard to be humble. But I do recall the words of my grandmother, ‘beauty is as beauty does…’” And, so she keeps busy planning her next project.

Bacheldor beams and says she’s had a “fantastic life.” Every day she wears flowers in her hair, color coordinated to match each day’s outfit, and wears a smile that is simply as unforgettable as the three words she’s been asked to share. Now, pass them along.

Amy Grant talks about family ties, community allies, the secret to youth and the natural side of Nashville

Sizemore FiftyForward Communications Director In the last edition of Forward Focus we featured an interview with Amy Grant prior to her Music and Memories concert benefiting the FiftyForward Martin Center. Because of space constraints, we ran out of room to share additional morsels from our conversation, so we hope you enjoy these tidbits as Grant elaborates on the importance of family; lessons learned from other community influencers; and on exploring Nashville’s natural side.

Forward Focus: Looking back on family, we can all see common threads passed from generation to generation. When you think of your children and intergenerational sharing what stands out to you?

Grant: I love it when our big family is together. What I remember most is the one-on-one time we spent together. Time was always good. It’s not like we went on tons of trips; but dad went with me on a work trip; and when I was 17, my mom took me -- by myself -- to the beach.

We talked when we came in from the sun until the sun went down.

What an incredible woman! What I learned from my parents was an understanding that everyone in a household is different. People are loving. My parents created an environment of nurturing and love and welcome. As my children build their own lives, I want that to be familiar to them on a cellular level, that we are all one big family.

She then recounted a valuable message gained from Franklin’s own Jimmy Gentry, who is often referenced as an American hero. Gentry was an American foot soldier in World War II who enlisted at the age of 17.

He fought in the Battle of Bulge, WWII, and was part of the liberation army at Dachau. Those who know him can attest firsthand to his life of service and dedication to community. Grant recalls that one of my children was going through some challenges and I was discussing the situation with Jimmy Gentry from Gentry’s Farm in Franklin. He said to me: “Just look at your hand and remember the five most important phrases and say them yourself.”

And with the last finger ... he asked, ‘What is the single most important word?’ I thought and thought offering: God. He said, ‘The single most important word is: we.’

Gentry said, ‘Teach them this and they will live differently.’ ” Forward Focus: What is your secret to staying young?

Grant: Fan the flame of curiosity. Smile often ... it and laughing actually release chemicals and hormones. I remember during a photo shoot the photographer kept saying, “Come on smile. Make yourself laugh.” I said, Really? The photographer said, “Fake it. Seriously, just go with me 4 | Forward Focus

…” I can now say everything about our countenance changes when you do this.

Forward Focus: Recently, we launched a FiftyForward initiative to challenge members, co-workers, family and friends to expand their knowledge and to try new things. While some folks might call these Bucket List items we call them FiftyForward Firsts – and champion their completion. To date, some of our center members -- ranging in age from 50-100 -- have tried new food (including sushi and mussels), experienced a I can either live hot air balloon ride, gone canoeing and zip lining; taken a great story or up gardening or explored the arts or a new craft. Grant: I have always wanted to be involved in a summer camp and last year we hosted our first. Also, I want to walk/jog -- a half marathon. Later this year, I will turn 56.

My grandfather (dad’s side) died at 56 and my father had bypass surgery in his 50s. Nothing happens unless you say it. Then you start pointing in that direction. Say it and move in that direction … I don’t know if Nashville is the best place – it’s so hilly.

Forward Focus: As a Nashville resident what are some of your favorite events or things to do in town?

Grant: I love enjoying the parks in Nashville as well at the greenways.

Shelby Bottoms is unbelievable! Percy Warner Park is amazing! And, restaurants in town are great but I’m not up on them because I love to cook and I like eating my own food. Theater in Nashville is also amazing and there is so much good music. Just getting out is the first step. All of us when we get to the end of the day want to put on our pjs (pajamas) and get our favorite beverage. I tell myself: I can either live a great story or watch someone else’s. Doing both is great … don’t just do one.

Learn tips and tricks to keep your smile healthy and more!

AN ORAL HEALTH AMERICA WISDOM TOOTH PROJECT® INITIATIVE The need to “Brush your teeth, round and round, circle small, gums and all” doesn’t end when we outgrow singing that song.

Proper oral health care is an area in need of attention for older adults because they are at increased risk for health-related complications and diseases due to poor practices or habits.

Older adults are more prone to tooth loss, oral cancer and periodontal disease because of age-related changes in their bodies, underlying chronic diseases, use of medications, limited access to dental services or affordable dental insurance, and a lack of programs that support oral health prevention and education. The way people feel about their smiles and oral health affects emotional health and well-being. Everyone is more confident when presenting their best. Often the first thing that people see is our smile.

FiftyForward has partnered with Oral Health America, the Middle Tennessee Oral Health Coalition, and the Nashville Area Dental Hygienist Society to offer specialized oral health training for older adults in the Middle Tennessee area. A cadre of more than 25 enthusiastic, skilled local dental hygienists -- with a special interest in working with older adults -- is ready to share their knowledge to improve oral health and keep everyone smiling.

Tooth Wisdom program participants will walk away with a greater appreciation for the importance of good oral hygiene habits, learn helpful techniques on properly caring for their mouth, and receive preventative oral hygiene products (a goody bag!). Participants can expect hygienists to administer a pre- and post-quiz to assess the impact of the training session along with the knowledge gained from the program. The information gathered will help inform and guide future training sessions to make the program as effective as possible.

Volunteer opportunities

FiftyForward RSVP volunteer and retired veteran, Jim Cottingham, makes service a priority at the USO Welcome Center

Jim Cottingham, a decorated veteran, routinely makes a difference in the lives of others by simply volunteering.

As one of many FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (FiftyForward RSVP) participants who serves at the USO Center in the Nashville International Airport, Cottingham has been a proud USO volunteer for more than two years. Working the 6-10 a.m. shift, Cottingham volunteers 12-16 hours a month and actively recruits other volunteers.

“All my life I have been a person who has recognized how fortunate I have been and how much I want to give back to the people and community around me,” says Cottingham.

In July 2014, Cottingham joined the USO Nashville volunteer team, led by Tammy Bass, center operations supervisor. Cottingham grew up in the Midwest and graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy.

While at the Naval Academy, he taught Sunday school and together with the pastor initiated a Midshipman Lay Reader program. In 1967, he was named Midshipman of the Year by the Annapolis Chamber of Commerce for his service to the community.

As a Navy pilot, Cottingham served during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he worked in several different fields including sales and Information Technology. But, throughout his career, he also placed priority on community service by working with the Volunteers for the Visually Handicapped, United Way, and as the district representative on the Fairfax County Disability Services Board.

When he retired in 2011, Cottingham sought new volunteer opportunities and contacted Liane Proctor, FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) outreach coordinator.

FiftyForward RSVP serves a volunteer hub for adults 55+ by placing volunteers in meaningful service to more than 50 nonprofit agencies, public organizations and elementary schools in Davidson and Williamson counties.

After years of service to country and community, Cottingham’s commitment speaks to helping others.

“I have spent more than 250 hours providing services to our troops, our veterans and their families. As a veteran, it is very rewarding to be able to provide some small amount of comfort and hospitality to these women and men who give so much to all of us,” Cottingham said.

FORE the LOVE of MEALS Golf, Concert, Karaoke or Donate Four ways to help homebound older adults

Join RSVP for the Second Annual FiftyForward RSVP-USO 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance on FRIDAY, Sept. 9.

In honor of September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance, FiftyForward RSVP and the USO Nashville are sponsoring the 2nd Annual “Fill the Truck” event, on Friday, Sept. 9, at select area Kroger stores in Davidson and Williamson counties to support men and women serving in the U.S. military. From 11 a.m. 2 p.m., volunteers are needed to hand out donation suggestion flyers, collect donated goods (non-perishable snacks and food items) and “Fill the Truck.”

Items will then be transported to the USO Centers at Nashville International Airport, Fort Campbell, and the Middle Tennessee Military Entrance Processing Station.

Special feature Agency predates Older Americans Act of 1965 providing critical services to older adults

FiftyForward has contributed 60 years of impact to enrich the lives of older adults Since 1956, FiftyForward has been enriching the lives of those 50+. Established nearly a decade before the Older Americans Act was enacted -- to provide critical services to keep older adults healthy and independent -- FiftyForward has been blazing trails for older adults for many years.

Since September marks a number of awareness months including Healthy Aging and National Senior Center month, it seems timely to showcase some of the ways FiftyForward impacts the lives of those 50+.

One of the biggest challenges for older adults is isolation that often leads to depression and illness.

Centers, programs and volunteer opportunities all provide interaction and opportunities for socialization which help decrease depression and increase engagement. Ultimately this engagement increases happiness.

As part of the agency’s 60th celebration we will continue to share some of FiftyForward’s shining marks of distinction in Forward Focus.

FiftyForward has long championed activities and interactions for adults 50+ through its centers, activities, programs and resources. Below are a few examples of the rich resources FiftyForward has contributed to community.

Partnership with YMCA. In 2006, the Bellevue Family YMCA FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center opened marking a unique first of its kind in the country. All Bellevue Family YMCA members who are 50+ are automatically enrolled as FiftyForward members to offer enrichment opportunities for older adults through age appropriate health, wellness, social and educational opportunities.

FiftyForward Adult Day Services holds the distinction of being the first social model day program in the state to serve the community’s older adults and their caregivers. Marking more than four decades of continuous service, the program is credited with helping customers maintain or increase their functioning level and supporting caregivers who work or need respite.

An online auction to benefit the programs, centers and services of FiftyForward to honor the agency’s 60th Anniversary During the summer of 2016, 18 Middle Tennesseebased artists were invited to transform unpainted cricket stools into works of art. When asked for Stool of Jazz by James Trealkill guidelines and parameters, each artist received the same response. “There are no rules!” The result of the project is 18 one-of-a-kind pieces, each as unique as the artist who created it. The sold-out concert and VIP reception were held at the Historic Franklin Theatre on June 21 with some guests and fans coming from distant states to hear Grant perform. Proceeds from Music and Memories benefit the programs and services of FiftyForward Martin Center in Brentwood, Tennessee.

On June 10, State Rep. Brenda Gilmore and FiftyForward Bordeaux hosted the 7th annual Hats Off to Bordeaux. The event featured a silent auction, luncheon and hat fashion show emceed by special guest, NewsChannel 5 Reporter Kimberly Davis. Nashville Mayor Megan Barry stopped by to speak to attendees. A Running Start Ten years ago this fall, I was on the cross country team at San Jose City College (SJCC), and, at 49, was the oldest collegiate runner in Northern California.

Oldest, but not the slowest, thanks to poor Katrina at Salinas College (fake names, true story) and one of my own teammates, a high school track star who was young and athletic but also had a toddler and thus was always tired.

How did that happen? How on earth did I find myself in proud Jaguar purple and gold, standing at the start line with a hundred 19-year-olds about to thunder down a dusty mountain? When the gun went off, and thunder they did, I said to myself, “Oh, well, you’ll always be last.” But I wasn’t. (See above.)

The campus paper did a front-page story “49-Year-Old Inspires Teammates” as if I were team grandma. Cool, but missing details: My brother and I had moved back home, caring for Dad in his last months with cancer and then (as now) living with Mom. Jerry started teaching at City College, thus the flyer he shoved in my face one day. “Check this out. You should call them.” WANTED: DISTANCE RUNNERS FOR CROSS COUNTRY TEAM. FEMALES ESPECIALLY NEEDED. “Why would they want me?” “Why not? You run all the time.”

So I went to the school and left a message. Got a call from Coach Steadman. “Got your note. Sounded like a personal ad. ‘I’m old, I’m slow, but I’m willing...How desperate are you?’” We laughed, and after determining that I could finagle freshman status with nine units of writing plus run an hour without stopping, he got quiet. “Um..this is an indelicate question, but...how old are you? Forty-nine? You’ll be the oldest athlete I’ve ever coached.” I didn’t say it then, but I could have: “You’ll be the only coach I’ve ever had.” And that, ladies and gentlemen, set my life on a new course.

man, not the yeller that I am (I yell in a happy way, don’t worry. Mostly.).

He was 65 then, “retired, just helping out” at SJCC. He told stories and dumb jokes and remembered great old songs that were right on the cusp of his generation and mine, and beyond the pale of my teammates’ musical knowledge. As the oldest, I won shotgun in the team van, so Coach and I played OUR music. (Dig it, right?)

And on one of those long van rides to Fresno, he told me I would make a good coach.

My kids hear all about Coach Steadman before they see him at our league finals. He’s always there. And he’s 75, which doesn’t sound old to me anymore. You’re never too old to chase a dream, or wake up to a dream you’d never had. Sometimes you have to read the flyer, make the phone call, take the chance. Why not? Take a flying leap. But get a running start.

If you ever played Little League, any pre-Title IX girls’ sport, summer ball or winter chess, you probably had a coach who showed you how to be better than you were, how to work harder and push yourself past the pain into that satisfying I DID IT! sensation that feels so good because it felt so bad. (I’m assuming that can happen in chess. I ain’t so good at checkers.) I think being a tutor can be the same sort of thing. Tutors, coaches, teachers...we’re really teachers.

Did I say “we”? There is a straight line from Coach Steadman (a living legend, who literally wrote the book after 50-plus years of coaching) across the Santa Clara Valley, across the years, through San Jose City College (go, JAGS!) to me. As you read this, I may be hollering at some pre-teens as they run yet another 200/400/600-meter repeat, or do a Rambo Run, which means run hard the length of the field and THEN do ten pushups, then do it again ... and again, like the Jags did. Kidding, kind of. I back off the Steadman workouts for the young-‘uns.

But I don’t spare the enthusiasm, the encouragement, and the flatout love that he lavished on us, on me. He wouldn’t describe it that way. He did work our butts off (literally – I was in the best shape of my life at 49), until we were exhausted, for two hours a day. He is a quiet Fall 2016 | 15

What the Tech?

Mobile apps that help you find your balance Have you heard that September is National Senior Center Month? For more than ten years now the National Council on Aging (NCOA) has been marking this awareness month to celebrate senior centers around the country. As one of Nashville’s most far-reaching social services agencies operating seven area senior centers, FiftyForward is excited about this year’s theme for National Senior Center Month, “Find balance at your center.”

The NCOA suggests four major categories for “finding balance” in your local senior center: Fitness, Friendship, Learning, and Purpose. The FiftyForward What the Tech column focuses on the digital world, and we wanted to highlight some senior-friendly mobile apps that have a lot to offer in these four categories.

Fitness: One type of exercise that’s great for nearly everyone — young, old, athletic, injured — is yoga. Yoga is so versatile because there are a variety of poses/asanas – ranging from very easy to very difficult -- which can all be held for various lengths of time. If you’re looking for a good place to start, Pocket Yoga is an inexpensive app that doesn’t even require Wi-Fi to use. The app allows you to choose the duration and difficulty of your yoga practice, has multiangle views of each pose, and includes a pictorial dictionary that offers in-depth descriptions of how to properly assume each position. If you’re not ready to commit to such an active workout, I would recommend the Stretch Exercises app. It offers exactly what it sounds like: a comprehensive set of stretches you can practice, including descriptions and photos of how to perform each stretch properly. I suggest checking out the Red Stamp app. Red Stamp lets you create a custom card. After uploading your artwork and text, the app then sends your finished card on high-quality paper to whomever you choose, all for the same price (or less than) the cost of a less personal card you purchase.

Learning: There are so many great apps to keep your mind sharp! Some people prefer games that improve your focus, such as Lumosity, or the digital versions of traditional mind games, like the New York Times Crossword Puzzles app or Sudoku downloads. However, I like the apps that actually help you learn new things. I personally love the NPR One app, which helps you find free podcasts about topics like psychology, 16 | Forward Focus

current news and dozens of other topics. Another free learning app is Good Reads, which helps you keep track of every book you’ve ever read and find new books that you’ll probably like. You can find books based on topics that interest you, authors you love, and other criteria.

Then you can see a star rating breakdown of these books and read reviews written by everyday readers who also use the app.

Purpose: This category is by far the most important in finding balance at your senior center. One of the most common health problems people face, especially in the senior community, is depression, which stems from a lack of feeling purpose and connection. One of the best apps I’ve ever found is Happier, an app that literally focuses on helping you feel happier.

One part of this app challenges you to “collect” photos that make you happy by taking and saving photos of pretty landscapes, great accomplishments, and random acts of kindness that you witness, and adding captions that will remind you later of these positive parts of your life. The other piece of the Happier app is a catalog of simple courses, driven by science and statistics, that can teach you how to be happier. For example, you can take a course on seven different meditations that help you fall asleep, or a 21-day course that helps you build a habit of showing gratitude each day.

Even though there are great mobile apps which help you find a personal fitness routine, deepen friendships, inspire learning, and develop purpose, there’s still a need for organizations like FiftyForward. These lifelong learning centers fill a need for everyone by providing community. Your community supports you by giving you accountability in your fitness routine, a place to easily make new friends, and a roster full of classes, groups and programs you can join to learn about new topics of interest. Most importantly, these community centers combat the depression that comes from living in isolation by providing a friendly, supportive environment for you to continue finding or defining your life purpose. I hope you’ll find the community you need during National Senior Center Month!

FiftyForward Knowles member Ossie Jefferson-Corley shares her love of life For me, learning about Ossie’s early life while knowing 74-year-old Ossie, it is easy to see that her love of learning and of people has always been part of her. At FiftyForward Knowles, Ossie participates in regular exercise classes and attends daytrips and special events, most of which revolve around the arts or technology. She is also quick to help out when I need an extra hand around the center. Ossie recently began taking art classes and sold her first painting this past spring. She would also like to learn Spanish and do more traveling. She still has more to learn and more FiftyForward Firsts to achieve.

That quote, posted in my office, was given to me by FiftyForward Knowles member Ossie Jefferson-Corley. Each week, FiftyForward Knowles staff and members receive a printed quote that focuses on optimism and kindness. This gesture perfectly represents Ossie.

Ossie grew up on a Tennessee tobacco farm. Her family sustained itself by raising chickens and growing produce to eat fresh or can for later – all without electricity! Before beginning school in a one-room schoolhouse, Ossie was reading. She loved school. When her family moved to Nashville, she attended Pearl High School, and she liked that there were so many activities in which to be involved. As a teenager, Ossie worked as a nurse’s aide and also spent a lot of time with fellow church members who were nurses. As a result, she was confident she wanted to be a nurse. After high school, Ossie attended nursing school and then passed her state boards on the first try. As a nurse she traveled throughout the Unites States, Canada, and even to Paris.

Ossie first met Rosa Parks on the street in the late 1960s and asked for her autograph. Little did she know, Ms. Parks would later become her roommate. When they met again years later through an acquaintance, they became fast friends and Ms. Parks invited Ossie to live with her after Ossie’s separation from her husband, and she stayed for seven years. Ossie never saw Ms. Parks angry or unpleasant and Ms. Parks enjoyed Ossie’s cooking. The two friends held different spiritual beliefs, but they participated in each other’s religious events. Their friendship is an example of how Ossie cares for people, and I think it’s safe to say that both women were better off by knowing each other.

n April 2016, AT&T began offering wireline Internet access service at a new low price to households where at least one member participates in SNAP. This program is available to low-income individuals and families, including students, veterans, the senior community and nonEnglish speakers who qualify; and At&T is working in coordination with school and community-based organizations serving qualifying individuals and families.

Currently, the offer will be available in the 21 states in which AT&T provides wireline Internet access.

Qualifying households must have at least one individual participating in the U.S. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). An application is available to apply for this low cost internet service.

Caring for a pet can increase health benefits for older adults

According to The Human Animal Bond Research Initiative (HABRI) Foundation, 97 percent of doctors believe there are health benefits to owning and caring for a pet. In addition, 75 percent of doctors surveyed said their patients’ health improved as a result of adopting a pet. Researchers at the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, University of Montana and The Ohio State University also released studies that discuss the emotional and physical benefits of pet ownership, particularly for older adults.

For older adults, caring for a pet can have many benefits: • Stress reduction: The daily interaction with a pet -- be it dog, cat, or even bird, gerbil or fish -- helps alleviate some of life’s stressors that may be unique to this stage in life—divorce, caregiving, loss of spouse, career changes. Stress relief can be found in human-to-pet bonding that lowers blood pressure and heart rate, and social interactions such as teaching pets new tricks can distract from worry.

•

Increased social interaction: Studies show that pet parents tend to have more opportunities for social engagement such as meeting other pet owners at a dog park.

•

Better fitness through pet ownership: Pets can help their owners meet fitness goals through daily walks and jogs.

As president/founder of Kristen Levine Pet Living, pet industry veteran Levine says that pets can be a “social icebreaker” for many boomers and older adults. Pet ownership gives people something in common to share information, anecdotes, to create camaraderie over pet stories. “It’s great for single adults,” says Levine, “if you are active, you can meet others at parks, walking trails, even dog-friendly dining establishments.”

Levine recently launched Pet Living 50+ to assist pet-positive companies in building brand loyalty and engagement with older pet lovers; however, her main focus is to help people of all ages live happier, healthier lives through pet ownership. She knows firsthand about the mental, social, emotional and physical advantages of pet ownership as she currently cares for a dog, two cats, and two minidonkeys.

“It is important to pick the right pet for you and your lifestyle,” says Levine, “because you want your pet to be happy and engaged with you.”

Levine has some advice for those 50+ who might want to adopt a pet at this stage of their life: • Assess lifestyle and energy level. Are you active or a homebody?

Do you talk daily walks and enjoy an active outdoors lifestyle?

Do you enjoy quieter pursuits—reading, crafting, watching television? Choosing a pet companion that has the same energy will guarantee a better match. If you love the outdoors, you might want a dog that has higher energy (a retriever, border collie, etc.) or if you are a homebody, a smaller dog (think lapdog) or even a cat, gerbil, or fish, might be more to your liking. If you have physical limitations, choosing the right pet companion can bring better health outcomes.

•

Work schedules. If you are still working, you will need to determine how much time you can invest in pet care and social engagement with your pet. If you are retired, a pet can be a wonderful companion.

•

Home environment. What kind of home environment can you offer to a pet? A large playful dog may be a better choice for an owner with a big yard versus a small apartment that might feel overpowered by a large canine. If you live in an apartment, a small dog, a cat, hamster, birds or even a fish may be better choices.

•

What pets are interesting to you? Sometimes we have our heart set on a particular breed of dog or cat. “If you are curious about a particular breed, do the research, talk to people,” says Levine, “visit a shelter, dog park, get feedback from other owners of that breed.” Examine the required energy level needed for the pet’s optimal care.

•

Budget. Pet care can be expensive at times. There will be annual veterinary costs such as well care vet visits as well as unexpected vet costs due to accidents or illness.

If you have examined these considerations and are still not sure about adopting a pet, there are many ways to reap the benefits of pet companionship without actually owning one. Volunteering in shelters is a great way to “visit” with many breeds of dogs and cats without the expense of ownership. You can meet many like-minded, petloving people by volunteering at shelters, pet events, and pet therapy programs. Pet sitting is also a great way to enjoy pets and even make a bit of income.

“Pet ownership should be taken very seriously,” states Levine.

“Pets are for life, not just a Christmas gift.” Levine believes this strongly as a pet advocate.

Do the research to find the right pet companion for you and, in turn, you will reap the health benefits, not to mention unconditional love, wagging tails, snuggles and a sweet companion.

It’s Just Stuff! by Connie Sue Davenport

Vintage 1960s stemware and bowls still all the rage with collectors Dear Connie Sue,

Hello Laura,

I have inherited a set of stemware and a pair of candelabras. I am trying to determine the pattern name for the stemware and also the value of the candelabras (glass or crystal). I am terribly uninformed, so I’m hoping you can tell me how I can accomplish these goals. I live in Nolensville, TN and see your information in many publications.

Any information or direction you can give me would be appreciated.

Frosted glass snack bowls and glassware sets were introduced about the time families began entertaining in a den. Your mother’s set was hand painted free style, without decals. Fire King and Anchor Hocking produced similar themed bowl sets, most of which were decorated with the help of stencils and a thin layer of paint.

I like the thick layer of paint on your bowls. It gives the flower more detail and texture. I’m intrigued by the quotation marks around the words Help Yourself. Did our mothers really speak to us through glassware?

Jane Dear Jane, The pattern of your etched crystal stemware is Cordelia made by TiffinFranciscan in Tiffin, Ohio. The company was started in the 1880s. After surviving the depression years and good times, the company went bankrupt in the 1960s. Loyal workers bought the factory and continued working. They ran it for three years before a series of new owners finally stopped production in 1980.

Cordelia stemware is offered at Replacements.com for $8-$15 each.

Bought in sets, crystal often sells for a couple of dollars per piece. I believe Tiffin-Franciscan made the Cordelia pattern after 1950. It was originally priced to appeal to thrifty consumers. If the fluted stem you’ve pictured is 6 1/8” tall it is a parfait which can sometimes sell for $35 each!

The crystal candelabra was made by the Imperial Glass Corporation in Bellaire, Ohio. It was marketed as #301 – 3 – Lite Candelabrum with prisms, and made from 1959 to 1982. The pattern name is Old Williamsburg. Today a single, three-candle holder in the Old Williamsburg pattern sells from $55 to $150.

Here’s how I found the pattern for the stemware. I searched etched glass stemware in Replacements.com and scanned the pictures for matching shapes. Many of the matching shapes were made by Tiffin Glass, so I narrowed my search to Tiffin etched glass and finally found your pattern.

To determine the maker of the candelabra, after scanning numerous books of the patterns and tableware made during the Depression, I ran BUYCollectors GET across a small booklet by the Newark Heisey Club published in 1980 by the Heisey Collectors of America, Inc. In the booklet were line drawings of several Imperial Glass candle holders. Heisey molds were acquired by Imperial Glass in 1958. The book must have been my mother’s – she was a collector/dealer.
