September/October 2015 Newsletter

FiftyForward enriches the lives of adults 50+ by providing pathways to health, well-being, and lifelong learning.

Salutations from Sally If you have been on a daytrip, you already know how nice it would be to have a new Knowles van. The Activities Committee has confirmed securing a new van as a “goal for Knowles for the upcoming year. The committee decided that one way to raise awareness and to generate funds would be to host bake sales throughout the year. Janice Smith and Sally Wood are organizing the sales, so get ready8you may be asked to bake, buy, or sell! It can be fun if everybody jumps on the bandwagon8 oops, I mean the VANwagon! I hope many of you will come to the Stacked Box Project. See back page. - Sally

Smoothies with Isaac Isaac from Good Food for Good People demonstrated different smoothie recipes and we tasted some yummy samples! Knowles Helps Others Our Christmas in July program went very well – we stuffed over 70 stockings and bags to be delivered through FiftyForward’s Meals on Wheels! Because of your generous enthusiasm, we are going to continue the volunteer activities. On September 11, we will partner with the United Service Organizations (USO) to promote 9/11 Day of Service. We will set up at the Green Hills Kroger to pass out flyers and accept donations for the Nashville USO. Please sign up at the front desk to volunteer – you can ride the van or meet us at Kroger. Also, keep an eye out for a new weekly program to begin. Meaningful Mondays will be fun and easy craft projects with a special purpose. Decorating greeting cards, potting flowers, the list can go on and on! Do you have a fun craft idea or group in need of something cheerful? Let us know!

Spotlight On, Bertha Brown If you ever need a helping hand, look no further than FiftyForward member Bertha Brown! Bertha grew up in Nashville and attended Pearl High School then TSU. She worked as an elementary school teacher until her retirement two years ago. She preferred to teach elementary students because they are so excited about learning new things at their young age. Bertha joined FiftyForward when she retired and is involved in center activities, as well as traveling with Joan and Janice. She enjoys spending time with FiftyForward because she loves meeting new people and likes the atmosphere of the centers. When she is not participating in FiftyForward activities, Bertha volunteers at the Frist Center, schools, and the Council on Aging. As an ambassador for the Frist Center, Bertha gets to meet people from all over the country and, as a Nashville native, educates visitors on the history of the Center - did you know it used to be a post office!? With all of Bertha’s volunteer positions, it is no surprise she is such a great helper at Knowles!

Virtual Dementia Tour FiftyForward Knowles will be hosting a Virtual Dementia Tour on October 28. This 10minute tour is designed for people who want to experience what it is like to have dementia. It will be open to the public so spread the word and invite your children and grandchildren, neighbors and friends! Do you know anyone who is a caretaker of someone with dementia? Then this is the perfect experience for them! In addition, we are looking for volunteers to help people experience the Virtual Dementia Tour. These volunteer positions involve reading directions and standing. Please see Casey if you are interested and able to volunteer!

Artober FiftyForward is participating in Artober again this year and Knowles is going to do another stacked box art project! We had so much fun making the first one and we hope you will join us in painting another! Each person will paint a side of a box and when all boxes are put together like a puzzle, it makes a funky, colorful picture! We will leave the art display in the lobby through the month of October. Join us on September 23 and 24. Check out pictures from the last project!

Share your ideas for programs and events with us! Sally Solesby, Center Director, ssolesby@fiftyforward.org Casey Griffith, Program Assistant, cgriffith@fiftyforward.org
