Celebrate Older Americans Month!

Each May, the Administration for Community Living celebrates Older Americans Month to recognize the contributions older adults make to the nation. This year’s focus is on how older Americans take care of their health, engage in their communities, and make a positive impact on the lives of others. The Theme for Older Americans Month is Get Into The Act. This month is an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of community engagement to enhance the wellbeing of older Americans. Together we can promote healthy aging by getting involved!

So, let’s Get Into The Act together! Older adults have lots to offer, and there are many ways to give back by volunteering. Whether you volunteer once a year or every day, you can impact your community!

FiftyForward Donelson Station has a wonderful volunteer opportunity available for all who would like to get involved and give back to our community. We ask those who are able to volunteer on Saturday, May 16 from 9 am—2 pm to get the outside/grounds of our building in tip-top shape. We will be weeding, planting flowers, light painting, and basic clean-up outside. Lunch will be provided. Sign up in the front office. In the event of rain, we will work on the indoors!

GOD & COUNTRY CELEBRATION SAT., MAY 16 FROM 3-4 PM The Donelson/Hermitage Evening Exchange Club is honoring all present and retired Veteran’s and their families at The God & Country Celebration at Wilson Bank & Trust located at 217 Donelson Pike in Donelson. There will be a special recognition of WWII Veterans and Fallen Soldiers. Everyone is welcome to come and honor our veterans.

Dear Friends: May is always such a wonderful time for renewal and growth. I hope you are ready! As always, Lisa has packed this month full of exciting and fun activities and trips. I hope you join us in the Walk with Ease Program, the clean-up day or maybe work on your whittling skills! This is your center, and we hope that you utilize it!

May is also the time for our matching campaign. I hope you will please consider making a donation above and beyond what your Program Director monthly membership covers. Dear Friends, We have so many great trips and events in May! The symphony was such a success that I planned another trip on May 15. I have only had four members show interest in going to The Grand Old Opry, so I am not able to plan that trip until we get more people.

There are so many events going on this summer, and I wish we could do all of them, but that’s not possible. PLEASE, let me know what you are interested in doing this summer. Concerts?

Outdoor movies? Nashville Shores? Golf? I want to hear your ideas. Have you eaten at a really good restaurant? Share that with me! Your input counts, and I appreciate it!

Event/Class Updates 2015 COMPUTER CLASSES All classes are $20 for members and $30 for non-members (unless otherwise noted).

Classes are on Saturdays from 9-11 am (4 classes per month).

Basic Internet Skills—May 16-30 (3 weeks/$15) Students will learn Internet Explorer, how to download and install Chrome and Firefox and how to add search engines to the browsers. The class will discuss the difference between the internet and the world wide web, what domain names are, and answer the question of “Where does the internet end?” Class will cover customizing your internet experience.

Twitter—June 6-27 Get started using this social media network for professional networking and development. This course will explain how Twitter works, how to create an account, develop an understanding of different “tweets” and how to build a relationship with other users.

Arthritis Foundation’s Walk With Ease May is a great time to get your “walk” on! On Monday, May 4 we will start the Walk With Ease program and continue at 9:30 am on Mondays and Wednesdays. This program is just as much about accountability and taking care of yourself as it is walking. Whether you are affected by arthritis or not, it’s time to get moving!

Walking is the best way to keep your joints lubricated and burn calories. The worst thing arthritis sufferers can do is to be immobile. Each of you will receive a book from The Arthritis Foundation! Meet in the front lobby the morning of the 4th. There will be different levels of walkers.

This is not a competition! You walk as much as you can. If you only go around the building once, that’s great. The key is to gain strength and endurance. If you have any questions, come see Lisa! Hope to see many of you on the 4th!

NPT Presents Aging Matters: Aging in Place You are invited to a screening and panel discussion of NPT’s new documentary “Aging Matters: Aging in Place” on Wed. MAY TRIPS AND EVENTS Caregiver Training for Alzheimer’s Disease–Fri., May. 1. This is a FREE training geared to family and professional caregivers of people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The training session is taught by dementia care specialist, Debbie Miller. Her hands-on workshops provide practical care techniques that make caregiving a positive experience. FiftyForward’s Victory Over Crime Presentation–Mon., May 4 at 10 am. Victory Over Crime is a FREE program supporting older adults who have been victimized by crimes such as neglect, financial exploitation, violence, fraud, and burglary. Senior Day on The General Jackson–Wed., May 13 Join us for our yearly sail on The General Jackson down the beautiful Cumberland River. Your fare includes lunch, entertainment and voyage. This discounted rate is half the cost of normally priced tickets.

Frist Center Tour-Thurs., May 14 This tour is self-guided. The exhibition is Telling Tales: Stories and Legends in 19th Century American Art . The paintings and sculptures on display convey messages and lessons through storytelling from the late 18th and 19th centuries. This is a FREE tour.

“The Boards” in theatre refer to boards on which the stage is constructed. These camps focus on beginning actor skills, communication and cooperation for theatre and beyond.
