July 2019

Martin Member Bill Farmer I was born in West Palm Beach Florida. I went to a Catholic school and played football, basketball, and baseball in high school. After I graduated I joined the Navy in 1950. I went to bootcamp at the Great Lakes; took a train to San Francisco; and a ship to Japan and I was stationed at N.A.S at Atsugi. When I got there the Navy was working on forming a football team in Japan. They found out I use to play and was pretty good and invited me to try out. Two other guys and I tried out and we all three made the team. I played (Found in picture: Bill (left) His Grandson ,the mascot, (right) three games and got hurt on the fourth game. This meant that when a plane crashed we would come in and crate the parts up and send them back to the United States. After Japan I was stationed at NAS North Island in San Diego. Five years after I got out of the Navy I got married in West Palm Beach to a pretty little girl from Maine, Mona. We were married five months after we met. We had two sons; Bill Jr. and Fred. Bill Jr. had two children Monica and Nicholas. I went into the Plumbing Supply business with my father. We ran the business for 34 years and then sold it to a larger company. I retired and played golf and my back went bad and I could not play golf anymore. My wife died five years ago. When my son and my daughter-in-law Vickie said “...let’s move to Nashville” I said “okay let’s go.” As I drove around Brentwood I kept seeing a sign that said “Senior Center.” I came by, and drove around and checked it out, but I did not go in. One day I thought to myself, “You need to do something. You need to get up and do something else.” So I came back. When I did, I came inside and I met Jessica; she was so nice. I joined and the first thing I did was play pool with the guys. They
