Martin Member Highlight David Hartman David was born on August 14, 1947 in Nashville, Tennessee. In his younger years and up through high school, he lived in the small community of Wrencoe which was located near the southeast border of Davidson County. He attended and graduated from Antioch High School in 1965. On September 17, 1966 he married his wife Margie. Soon after, he was drafted into the Army and spent portions of 1967 and 1968 in Vietnam. Upon returning he and Margie started their family. They have two sons. He worked 22 years for the L& N Railroad in Nashville. David then worked for two lumber yards as a dispatcher and shipping manager, one for seven years and the second for ten plus years. He was also a volunteer fireman for seven years in Nolensville Tennessee. David and Margie bought their home place in Nolensville in 1971 where they still live to this day. Many changes have taken place during this time and Nolensville is no longer a small farming community. David is a member of Nolensville First Baptist Church and has served as a deacon there for over 30 years. He and Margie both say they are very blessed and have a loving family. David joined the Martin Center a little over three years ago and has made many friends here. He is looking forward to helping the Martin Center grow and prosper in the coming years and to continue to provide programs and support for seniors in our community. David’s recommendation is: “Try us, you will like us.”

The Martin Center wishes you a Happy Saint Patrick’s Day on March 17!

Thank you for all that came out to our field trips in January and February. We look forward to going on more soon!

The Sisterhood in Canasta By Brittany Campagna I sat pensive in my office on a frosty winter morning. It was cold outside and I was enjoying watching the red birds shuffle from twig to twig in the crisp morning air. I heard a sweet small voice say, “It’s warm in here, it is pretty cold outside.” I smiled as I realized it was one of my morning joys, Adele Tomlinson walking through my office door. “You know what today is…” I said and paused “yeah,” she said “come on let’s go and we will teach you.” I wanted to play Canasta, but I was hesitant for a few weeks. I would always walk by the doors and see them laughing or playfully arguing. I would see them eating and carrying on. I wanted to jump in, but I had hesitation. I wanted to laugh too, but I was uncertain how a group of tight knit friends would take a kid like me. I sat patiently around the round table waiting for the other girls to come. I looked across the table at Judy Perry, “This will be fun” she said as she smiled at me. I wondered how I was going to fit in with a group of women that played forever. The cards hit the table and so did the instructions. “Alright Brittany you want 13 in one deck and a red card on top. You want 11 in the other deck; make sure there is a blue on top.” Cards began to fly, directions swirled around me, and we were off to the races. Judy Perry was throwing cards faster than I had ever seen, Genevieve Gulch was sorting, counting and organizing, Adele was telling stories about her granddaughter and I was trying to hold on and absorb all the fun I never knew I could have. I had a hand I knew nothing about and some how managed to slide them out to Adele faster than I realized I was actually doing the right thing. “Adele we are winning!” I began to get a little confident and tease the girls about my beginner’s luck. “Strategy...strategy, strategy, strategy. It is an easy game but you have to have strategy and you are doing well at learning” Genevieve Gulch said from behind her cards. I realized in that moment, even though I thought Adele and I were winning, we were actually bonding. We were all winning. Judy Perry was pouring strategy into me and correcting my hand and thought process when possible. Adele was encouraging me to play and celebrating when I remembered the right step, and Genevieve was carrying on with me. They were supporting me. They were larger than life. I realized in that moment this was an experience I could only gain at the center. I realized the moment we shared playing cards was what my soul really needed on that Thursday morning. With the girls I was no longer hesitant. They freed my worries. They poured into my spirit and we all won. For the first time in a long time I felt the power of sisterhood in those women. If you are a member or seeking to join and excited about making good memories and friends too please join us every Thursday from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
