Mat Pilates & Core Stability

Pilates improves flexibility, builds strength and develops control and endurance in the entire body. By putting emphasis on alignment, breathing and developing a strong core (the muscles of the abdomen, back, and hips) Pilates can improve coordination and balance.

Wednesdays 9:15—10:15 Instructor: Jenny Z Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, flexibility, range of movement, balance and activities for daily living.

Tai Chi Thursdays at 9:00

Instructor: Julie Russell Tai Chi quiets minds, helps with breathing deeper, and improves balance.

Instructor: Julie Russell Foundation for all bodies to gain strength and flexibility as well as to calm and clear minds.

Stretch and Flex Exercise Class Fridays at 9:30 Instructor: Dot Small This chair exercise class focuses on flexibility and balance. Members free. Non-members $5.

Walking Path Brentwood Walking Trail is available off the back patio. Brentwood’s city trails provide a great place to walk, run or bike. The trails connect citizens to other facilities including the Concord Road YMCA, Williamson Sports Complex.

Weight Watchers

Meetings are held here at the Martin Center. Center members with I.D. pay $30 joining fee week one (unless there is a joining special). Martin Center members with I.D. receive $2.00 off the weekly fee.

The author spent a year in a Denver classroom as immigrant teenagers learn English. A 3.5-star book review.

LUNCH AROUND TOWN Martin’s B-B-Que—Spring Hill

Monday, June 11 Departure 10:30 am New to Spring Hill, the vibe at Martin’s in Spring Hill might even be a tad more fun than its Nashville counterparts. Some items on the menu consist of pulled pork sandwich, burgers, BBQ baked potatoes and salads. The best part about their drink selection is the throwback options such as Cheerwine, Sun Drop and several flavors of Nehi. And yes...they come in glass bottles straight out of our childhood.

Cost: $4 includes CDL licensed driver, door-to-door service, parking and transportation

Chocolate Strawberry Cafe Tuesday, June 26—10:15

Revisit requested!! The Chocolate Strawberry Café is a unique place to dine and shop.

Delicious and original sandwiches, soups and salads as well as 2 clothing boutiques. Each sandwich plate comes with a chocolate dipped strawberry to satisfy the sweet tooth.

FIFTYFORWARD VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION LUNCH Thursday, June 7 FiftyForward Martin Center volunteers will be joining other volunteers from different centers at the Knowles Center to enjoy lunch and special entertainment .

Cabot Cheese Gratitude Grille will serve a mac-n-cheese, salad & cookie lunch to our volunteers. Lunch service begins at 11:30 and will run until 1:00 or so. Volunteer Dee Davis and her dancing friends will be leading us in Western Swing Dancing.

Deloitte Technology Day Tuesday June 5 10:00 am—1:00 pm Technology professionals from Deloitte will be on site to help you with your technology questions. Whether you are new to technology or an experienced user, the volunteers can help you learn more about and simplify your technology. Please bring your phone, laptop or i-pad. Some examples of the technology assistance they are ready to provide: How to use your phone-How to set-up or use your Facebook page—E-mail on a smart phone— understanding and using Apps—Taking and sending photos.

Aging Mastery Program from the National Council On Aging August 15—September 26

The Aging Mastery Program (AMP) encourages mastery—developing behaviors across many dimensions that will lead to improved health, stronger financial security and overall wellbeing. By participating in this program, you will: Make and maintain small but impactful changes in your health, financial well-being, and enrichment in later life. Get REAL incentives and rewards for taking small steps that can improve your well-being. Meet new friends, provide support and encouragement to your peers, and become more involved in your community. Registration for AMP classes is limited.

There is no fee to attend the AMP programs for FiftyForward Center members.

Non-members pay $60 for the series of classes.

Welcome to Summer As you may know, we are still in a search for personnel to fill our two Martin vacancies, our Program and Partnership Director and our Volunteer and Office Manager. Helen is continuing to help us “hang on” until we can find the right candidate. If you know of someone that might be interested in either of these roles, please let us know. We need to cast a wider net so please help us spread the word.

If you are wondering why we aren’t scheduling more trips, it is because we are required by law to only use CDL licensed drivers. In the past we used several of our great Brentwood firefighters, but one is retiring this summer and two others are now in Administrative positions so they no longer have shift rotations. The rotation means that they are off during certain days, giving them the flexibility to drive for us. If you know of any friends or neighbors that might have this license, please reach out to them to see if they might be interested in contracting to drive for us several times a month. Thanks, Joyce

AllofUS Research Program Now Offering One-on-One Appointments Monthly—3rd Wednesday 10 am to noon ALLofUS Research Program is partnering with Vanderbilt University seeking to improve the health of future generations. They are looking for 1,000,000 volunteers from diverse backgrounds to participate in this study program.

If you are interested in joining the program but have more questions or would like some assistance in enrolling, please make an appointment with us! Beginning Wednesday, June 20, team members will be offering monthly one-on-one appointments here at FiftyForward Martin Center to answer questions and offer technology assistance with online enrollment. George gets Alice pregnant before falling in love with rich and beautiful dĂŠbutante Angela Vickers, (Elizabeth Taylor) the belle of everyone's ball. Alice wants marriage and George wants out and nobody ends up very happy.

Friday, June 22 at 1:00 Blossoms in the Dust

(1941)

Stars: Greer Garson, Walter Pidgeon, Felix Bressart Edna Gladney, who lost her son at a young age, discovers the injustice within the law towards children whose parents are unknown.

She opens a home for foundlings and orphans and begins to place children in good homes, despite the opposition of "conservative" citizens, who would condemn illegitimate children for being born out of wedlock. Eventually Edna leads a fight in the Texas legislature to remove the stigma of illegitimacy

from birth records in that state, while continuing to be an advocate for homeless children.

Different membership options make it easy for anyone to join: Membership is $120 per year. Paid in full at time of registration.  Bank draft - $10 monthly withdrawal directly from your bank account.  With a $20 enrollment at time of registration (this is the first two months of withdrawals).  Scholarships for membership are available. Ask the Office Manager about qualifications.  Keep in mind there may be additional costs for specific center programs and events.

Reception Desk: Greet visitors, register participants for programs , GIVE Center tour and answer the phone.

Facilities Set-up: Set up and arrange tables and chairs in the building for various programs and special events.

Landscaping Committee: Help keep our landscape looking beautiful by weeding, watering, planting and picking up trash.

Property Committee: Identify needs and help with general maintenance and repair of the Center.

Kitchen Keepers: Organize the kitchen for special events and potlucks including set-up, heating the food and clean-up.

Newsletter Group: Fold, label and sort the Center’s newsletter.

Data Entry: Input membership and volunteer data.

Welcoming Committee: Introduce new participants at social and special events. Organize the Center’s New Member Luncheon.

Phone Calling: Make occasional phone calls as reminders or follow-ups.

Decorating Committee: Decorate for activities or special events at the Center.

Membership Committee: Promote membership and encourage members to be active. par-

ticipants and recruit new members
