FIFTYFORWARD.ORG | MARCH 2022

March marks Women’s History Month and serves as a good time to reflect and appreciate the women who make a difference in our lives every day. This month-long celebration honoring the contributions of women to our culture, history, and society grew out of an event, in 1978, organized by the school district of Sonoma, California. The concept then caught on in some communities, school districts, and organizations across the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation to declare the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The following year, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution to establish a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March. In thinking of women’s history, it’s easy to reflect on

individuals who have gained notoriety for their efforts, but we have heroes among us whose stories have yet to be told. Our writer’s groups and other programs at FiftyForward offer tremendous opportunities for you to share your story with center members. Writing down these stories can leave a powerful legacy. Everyone has a story, and they are worthy of being shared. Our March podcast gives us just the opportunity to reflect on women’s history in our own backyard. In this month’s Squeeze the Day we highlight a Nashville original in Mackenzie Colt. Mackenzie made history as the founder and creator of the oldest specialty chocolate company in Nashville. Many of you may know her world-famous Colt’s Bolt (which she shared with us is Dolly Parton’s favorite) or her Gooey Butter Bar. These two signature candies helped launch Colt’s Chocolates. In our podcast, Mackenzie shares interesting snippets of her life. Learn more about Mackenzie Colt on page 9 and Listen to the Podcast.
