2020 Census — Everyone counts!

Why does the census matter?

Taken every year since 1790, this year marks the 24th census in our nation’s history. Although Census Day isn’t celebrated until April 1, your census questionnaire will arrive sometime in mid-March. It is vital that you count everyone in your household to give the Census Bureau an accurate tally.

According to Census.gov, the U.S. Census Bureau — the government’s largest statistical agency — is dedicated to “providing facts and figures about American’s people, places, and economy.” It provides information that will shape the distribution of funds for your community. This year’s census will determine how the $6.75 billion in federal spending will be distributed.

Some examples of what is at stake:

• The census determines how many representatives each state gets and what each district boundary will look like. The U.S. Constitution provides that each state will have a minimum of one member in the House of Representatives.

• The census informs policy makers how to allocate federal funds for communities including Head Start, grants for mental health services, Census dates to SNAP programs, school lunches, remember and education.

March: You should receive the census questionnaire in the mail by midMarch and you may respond by mail, by telephone or online.

April-May: Census takers will begin visiting areas with many people living in close proximity, such as college campuses, senior living communities and other housing communities.

May-June: Census takers will begin to canvas neighborhoods to visit those who have not responded.

December: The Census Bureau will deliver apportionment counts to the President and Congress as required by law.

• It provides population and growth trends so that funds can be allocated for programs such as housing for older adults, Medicaid and Medicare Part B, and community development projects.

• The numbers also provide information to fund infrastructure projects such as grants for public transportation, highway planning and construction, as well as rural water and waste disposal.

Count everyone under your roof

When you receive the census questionnaire in the mail, it is important that everyone is counted the correct way. You may respond to the census by mail, by telephone, or online.

Be sure to count every person living under your roof as of April 1, 2020; This may include: • Anyone currently renting space in

your home such as a roommate; Young children who currently live with you including foster children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, etc.

College students if they live with you. If they live in college housing most of the year, the Census Bureau has a special “group quarters” unit that counts people living in group situations like dorms and senior living communities.

History of the census

The first census in 1790 only covered 13 states and included the districts of Kentucky, Maine, Vermont and the Southwest Territory (Tennessee). Currently, the census covers all 50 states plus five U.S. territories: Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Nutrient rich food for the

young at heart

By Victoria Schoffner FiftyForward Fresh Meals Coordinator On a daily basis, I like to share how important nutrient-dense food is for everyone. Since March is National Nutrition Month as well as National Meals on Wheels Month, I’d like to focus on the importance of consuming nutrientrich foods as we age.

FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels has a food delivery service that takes care of the surrounding community. Because a basic need sometimes can’t be fulfilled personally, FiftyForward Fresh steps in to provide a hot, delicious, and nutrient-dense meal to older adults in the Nashville community.

What is nutrient-dense? Nutrient-dense foods are foods that have a high vitamin and mineral content (such as calcium, iron, magnesium, Vitamin D, B-12, etc.) that essentially help us to live longer and support a properly functioning body. Simply put, as we age, one of the major life changes we experience is a changing body, from weak bones to tooth decay. As I think of all the things that happen when one ages I can’t help but I think about how many changes and risks could be decreased by a better diet as well as physical activity. A better diet is a contributor to better health outcomes.

It is important to note that FiftyForward Fresh adopted a healthier initiative because they knew older adults may have limited funds and mobility challenges. Nutrient rich foods help increase a person’s life span and improve quality of life. As we conduct client follow-up visits we’re constantly receiving feedback on how FiftyForward meals are “God sent” and giving them life again.

As we age, our bodies may experience challenges and changes due partly to not having access to nutritious foods. Changes may include: • • • • • • • •

Blood vessels start to stiffen, and heart rate will not increase during activity which may lead to an increased risk of hypertension; Bones start to shrink and weaken, leading to muscle loss, and less endurance; Digestive issues such as constipation increase due to changes in the large intestines; Incontinence may occur due to weakened bladder muscles; Brain changes can affect memory; Dry mouth and tooth decay begin which prevents chewing and swallowing limiting whole food consumption; Slowing of the metabolism causing weight gain; A decrease in skin elasticity due to less fatty tissue.

Yes, all of these may be linked to aging, but a healthy lifestyle may counter or slow the physical aging process.

This is where services and programs like FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels kick in. This program can provide a meal that offers whole grains (fiber), fresh fruit and vegetables (vitamins, calcium, etc.), and great sources of protein, which in turn leads to longevity, less stress, and happiness. Not to mention emergency meals when your last two dollars just aren’t stretchable.

In honor of National Nutrition Month and National Meals on Wheels, FiftyForward Fresh continues to provide nutritious meals to those who need it, and provides individuals “hope in a bag” delivered by companionship that combats isolation. This is one service that is truly lifechanging.

Five Tips to Protect Yourself from Romance Scams

By Ashley Hunter, Director FiftyForward Victory Over Crime With spring in the air, this time of year makes it seem like love is everywhere.

Online dating has made it possible for more and more people to connect with others. While online dating can be a wonderful way to meet the love of your life, be careful. Scammers are lurking on online dating platforms trying to take advantage of you. A common scam today is the romance scam. Romance scammers create fake profiles on dating websites and apps to target vulnerable people looking for love and companionship. Referred to as “catfishing,” it is a means of luring someone into a relationship by means of creating a fictional online persona. These scammers try to develop relationships very quickly so they can build trust and an emotional connection to eventually ask for money. Follow these tips to protect yourself.

1. Take things slowly.

If they are saying things like, “I love you” or “I really care about you” within the first few messages, proceed with caution! Don’t be afraid to slow down the relationship if you feel like things are moving too fast. If the person you are talking to responds negatively to taking things slowly, that is a huge red flag!

2. Know the red flags.

Romance scammers like to use dramatic, heartfelt stories to explain

why they need money. They might say that they need money for a sick aunt or a child’s organ transplant. Sometimes they tell their victims that they are in the military working overseas and that is why they can’t meet in person. They might even say that they need money to travel to be with you.

3. Do a reverse image search.

Romance scammers use pictures of other people to hide their identity. These pictures are frequently taken from other social media profiles or websites. Do a Google reverse image search to see if their pictures are linked to other websites or profiles that don’t match their story. There are several ways to do a reverse image search and you can search online to find the way that works for your computer or phone. Don’t be afraid to investigate if you suspect anything “fishy.”

4. Talk to someone you trust.

Discuss the situation with a trusted friend or family member.

They might be able to point out some things that you could have misunderstood.

5. Never send money.

Romance scammers primarily ask for money via wire transfer and reloadable gift cards like iTunes and Amazon. They frequently ask for money in this way because it can be difficult to trace. Don’t fall for it! If you gave money to a scammer via gift card, contact the company that issued the gift card immediately and ask them to refund your money. If you catch it early enough you might be able to get some of your money returned.

FiftyForward Hosts All of Us Education & Enrollment Center in Nashville Exhibit Builds Awareness of the NIH Precision Medicine Research Effort Do you want to make a difference in the lives of future generations?

Join the All of Us Research Program when the Education & Enrollment Center, a traveling hands-on exhibit, makes a three-week stop in Nashville to build awareness and increase engagement in an effort that may change and improve health outcomes in the future.

“We are thrilled to join the Hispanic Family Foundation and the Nashville Public Library to welcome the All of Us Education & Enrollment Center and our fellow All of Us national community partner, the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, to Nashville,” said FiftyForward Chief Program Officer Gretchen Funk. “This is an exciting opportunity for our collective community to come together to learn more about the All of Us Research Program through the mobile exhibit’s interactive activities. Our All of Us program ambassadors have shared their enthusiasm for this effort saying this may be the best legacy they can leave for future generations.”

Anna brings a little UK to Nashville Sometimes someone comes into your life and leaves an indelible footprint. So it was when we met Anna Evans, who became a member of FiftyForward Knowles for a brief stint last fall. A native of Ireland, she brought light and cheer “from across the pond” as she called it all the way from Great Britain, specifically London where she now lives.

Anna taught us how to better use our transit/bus system because during her brief time in Nashville she did not have a vehicle. She explained to us overcoming her fear of traveling solo (after the loss of her husband of many years), and that her trip to Nashville resulted from a house swap she did with some Nashville residents. (Watch for more about Anna in a future Forward Focus.)

Charlie Daniels Had Smart Eye Surgery The country music legend Charlie Daniels underwent a revolutionary new “smart eye surgery,” performed by Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIT (MD); PhD (laser physics). Dr. Wang became the first cataract surgeon in the state to introduce the OptiWave™ Refractive Analysis, ORA System™, an innovative surgical technology designed to improve the outcome of cataract surgery.

Mr. Daniels is a country music legend and is known worldwide for his great hits, such as “Uneasy Rider,” “Long Haired Country Boy,” and “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.” In recent years, Mr. Daniels suffered sight loss due to progressive cataracts and hyperopia. We are hatching great things at our potluck in March. Have an egg-cellent time as we explore the basics in poultry care. Williamson County UT extension agent Doug Berny will teach us about raising chickens, discussing the benefits of the backyard flock with care, nutrition and maintenance. He will also field audience questions.

Berny is responsible for the 4H youth development in the poultry division but is knowledgeable in many aspects in 4H and agriculture in our area. Please bring a side dish to share, the center supplies the main dish.

Name That Tune returns with Humana!

Thursday, March 12, 11:30 a.m.

Melanie and Norm from Humana will be here to lead us in a few rounds of Name That Tune. Norm plays a few bars from oldies tunes and we guess the artists. It’s a fun afternoon and the music is invigorating. Norm has a wealth of music trivia, so you are sure to learn other interesting music facts. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. and program at noon.

Her soulful version of “You Are My Sunshine” drew rave reviews from dozens of reviewers and radio programmers. She will be performing for us this time with “The Wright Darlings.”

The Crown Affair The Crown Affair, FiftyForward’s signature fundraising event, features a cocktail reception, silent auction and plated dinner by G Catering, named by Nfocus magazine as Best Caterer in Nashville 2019. Throughout the evening, guests will hear stories of joy and hope as we share how FiftyForward embodies our mission to support, champion and enhance life for those 50 and older.

The evening’s highlight is the presentation of the Crowning Achievement Award to community leaders who generously support FiftyForward and other community causes. For the last eight years, FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels has worked hard to recreate the memories of the past and bring hope for the future to our clients. In supporting older adults this year we asked the community to make Valentine cards.

On Valentine’s Day, meal delivery volunteers delivered these holders packed with cards to the delight of our meal recipients. Each client received a fun decorated card holder with at least fifteen Valentines lovingly placed inside to be opened with anticipation upon arrival.

Spearheaded by Sharie Loik Goodman, director of FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels, this effort has touched the lives of many customers including one woman who exclaimed, “I guess we are never to old to get a thrill out of receiving something like this.” She added, “I never anticipated [this] would happen and it is delightful.”

For several weeks leading up to Feb. 14, the FiftyForward Fresh offices received handmade cards by many social groups across Nashville. Some folks even planned festive gatherings to make cards.

Become a FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels volunteer and prep and deliver hot meals to homebound older adults If you are looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity, sign up to prep or deliver meals for FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels. Spread cheer while you deliver a hot, nutritious meal to older adults in your community.

Volunteers are assigned a designated time to pick up meals.

Each volunteer receives the packaged meal as well as the address of 4-6 older adults who live in close proximity to one another.

Last year, FiftyForward Meals on Wheels delivered more than 18,000 hot meals to 134 homebound older adults in the Nashville community. Spread joy all year long doing something that gives back.

Warner Park Nature Center offers up a ride to enjoy a park tour

Recently Warner Park Nature Center was gifted a golf cart from The Nashville Predators Foundation with the intent that it be used as a way for more people to gain access to the park trails.

It wasn’t until 1902 that the Census Bureau became a permanent agency within the Department of Commerce and Labor and in 1913 became its own department.

In 1790 the population was estimated at 3.9 million, but Jefferson and Washington were concerned that this first census was an undercount of several hundred thousand.

The 2000 Census counted the nation’s population at 281,421,906. By 2010, the U.S. population was 308,745,538, a 9.7% increase from 2000.

Become a census taker

The U.S. Census Bureau is currently hiring hundreds of thousands of parttime census takers across the country to assist in the census effort. Most positions require some evening and weekend work. The job details, applications and job requirements can be found on the census website: https://2020census.gov/en/jobs/how-to-apply.html.

This kind of position offers flexibility and a chance to get to know your neighbors and community. It is a wonderful opportunity for the young at heart.

After a distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force and at AT&T, Jerry Davenport of Bellevue retired in December 1989. He got “tired of sitting around the house” and when he saw that the U.S. Census Bureau was seeking census takers, he jumped at the opportunity. He wanted to learn more about the census. He saw this as a “patriotic duty” to his country to help in this endeavor. In the summer of 1990, Davenport was assigned to an area in Brentwood and began knocking on the doors of all those who had not yet returned their census forms. Here is one incredible experience he shared: Davenport found himself looking at a mailbox at the end of a very long driveway with a sign that read “Beware of Dog.” He proceeded up the driveway and when he got to the house, he saw an old dog waiting to greet him. A man came walking out of the house waving his arms yelling, “No fans, no fans!” Davenport calmly introduced himself as a census taker and after looking at the last name on his clipboard, asked the gentleman, “Are you Mr. Arnold?” and chuckled, “Are you by any chance related to Eddy Arnold?”

The gentleman laughed and said, “I AM Eddy Arnold!”

After a good long laugh, Arnold invited him into the house where they chatted for nearly two hours. Davenport didn’t follow country music much at the time, so he hadn’t recognized the well-known country singer, but later looked up some of Arnold’s music after this fortuitous meeting. To this day he remembers this wonderful experience and urges people to sign up for this fun, part-time job, saying, “you’ll never know who will be on the other side of that door!”

Keep yourself safe

When the census questionnaire arrives, you can respond online, by mail or telephone. If you do not respond in a timely manner, you may be visited by an official census taker.

Here are some things to know to keep yourself safe: • First off, the Census Bureau will never send unsolicited email to you.

•

They will not request your Social Security number, your bank account or credit account number, nor will they ask for donations.

•

They will not contact you on behalf of a political party.

•

The Census Bureau works to keep your information confidential.

Starting in May and June, census takers will canvass neighborhoods to touch base with those who have not responded to the census. If a census taker comes to your door, they will identify themselves as a census taker, but if you are unsure: •

Ask to see a valid ID badge. It will have their photo, a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark and expiration date.

•

Please note: Your answers are private. Every Census Bureau worker takes an oath to protect your answers. If they violate this oath, they face a maximum of 5 years in jail and a $250,000 fine.

•

The Census Bureau never releases information that identifies you or your household.

Make spring cleaning easier!

By Jenni Hargrove According to Statista.com, did you know more than half of all Americans, about 54% of us, spend more than an hour each week cleaning our homes?

In fact, 10% of Americans spend more than five hours every week on cleaning tasks! As you get ready for spring cleaning season, let technology make your life a little easier. Here are some robot helpers that can help with your cleaning chores:

Robots for those with physical limitations Vacuums: If manual vacuums are bulky and heavy for you to operate, try using a robot vacuum to take care of the everyday dust and dirt on your floors.

Mops: That’s right—your robot vacuum can have a friend!

Many robot mops are offered in discounted packages if you purchase them at the same time as your vacuum.

Window cleaners: Similar to a robot vacuum or mop, this remote-controlled robot will “climb” your windows as it cleans so you don’t have to bend up and down to scrub the glass.

Scrubbers: Those with arthritis or other chronic pain often struggle to scrub difficult-to-clean spots like splattered food on the stovetop. Electric scrubbers can do the hard work for you.

Robots for pet owners Litter boxes: Cat owners may love their furry friends, but no one loves scooping kitty litter. Robotic litter boxes can automatically remove clumps of litter after your cat does its business.

Composting containers: These robots make composting easy by shredding food scraps into compost within a few hours.

Gutter cleaners: Although you still have to climb a ladder to release this robot into your gutters, it can save you repeated trips up and down a ladder by letting the robot do the hardest job for you.

The best part about these robot helpers? Many of them can connect to Wifi, and even come with free mobile apps so you can control their movements with your phone. Depending on the robots you choose, you may be able to set a cleaning schedule, dictate which rooms they clean, and check the status of their battery and accessories, all through your smartphone or tablet!

Dog potties: If you’re more of a dog person, you may want to try a robotic “dog potty,” which moves a clean absorbent pad across the platform several times each day to clean up your puppy’s “number 1.” This robot is great for apartment and condo dwellers who lack a backyard for their dog to visit during the workday.

Carpet cleaners: These robots can spot-clean your carpet when your fur baby has an accident. You can just place the cleaner on top of the spot which needs deep cleaning and push a button to start it.

Robots for everyone Air purifiers: These are especially helpful for people with asthma or allergies. Most air purifiers can remove over 99% of allergens and dust from the air.

New tax form is available for seniors: Is the 1040-SR right for you?

Homeowners may qualify for 2019 property tax relief or freeze; must apply

by April 5

Last fall the IRS unveiled a new tax form for older adults as a way to simplify their taxes. According to the IRS, this form called the 1040-SR and is available as an optional alternative to using Form 1040 for taxpayers who are age 65 or older. Form 1040-SR uses the same schedules and instructions as Form 1040 does.

Property tax freeze The tax freeze program was approved by Tennessee voters in a November, 2006 constitutional amendment referendum. The Tax Freeze Act of 2007 permits local governments to implement the program, and Metropolitan Nashville-Davidson County became the first jurisdiction in the state to establish a tax freeze program.

IF YOU...

• Have additional income, such as unemployment compensation, prize or award money, gambling winnings.

• Have any deductions to claim, such as student loan interest deduction, self-employment tax, educator expenses.

THEN USE Schedule 1

Under the program, qualifying homeowners age 65 and older can “freeze” the tax due on their property at the amount for the year they qualify, even if tax rates increase. Applicants must present: • Proof of age: birth certificate, Medicare card, driver’s license, passport, etc.; • Proof of ownership: current tax bill or receipt, recorded deed, etc.; • Evidence property is principal residence: voter registration card, etc.

• Further, income records must be provided showing the total income of all owners of Davidson County property during 2018 does not exceed $42,620. Income records include Federal tax returns or other items acceptable to the Trustee. All applicants must sign an income verification form permitting the Trustee to contact IRS, SSA or the State Division of Property Assessment to verify income. The application is a public record, but the financial documents remain confidential.

The Office of the Trustee begins accepting applications to freeze taxes at the current amount due every October, and the deadline to apply for Tax Freeze is the following April 5. New applicants must go to their office, but no appointment is required. Bring the required documents to the Office of the Trustee and please arrive by 3 p.m. If you need additional information concerning the program, call 615-862-6330.

VITA offers help in preparing taxes VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and is a nationwide program that runs from the end of January through April 15. IRS-certified volunteers prepare tax returns for free for individuals and families who qualify based on income (earning less than $66,000 in 2018). Last year, United Way and its partners offered Free Tax Prep at more than 25 locations across Middle Tennessee. Last year, the VITA program helped 15,000 individuals & families receive $19M in refunds and save $4M in filing fees.

Preparing for your visit: required items to bring with you • Photo ID for yourself and partner, if filing jointly • Original copies of Social Security cards or ITINs (for everyone on the return) • Proof of Income (a W2 for each employer during the tax year, 1099s, Social Security Income, Unemployment, Interest, etc.)

• Proof of expenses if claiming any (childcare, education, medical, property tax, itemized deductions, etc.)

• Proof of mileage if claiming any (must be a written record. Please total any business expenses before arriving.)
