LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Dear Turner Center Members, It is hard to believe that Spring is right around the corner. The staff are already making plans to take our members to several great places around town where we can all enjoy some warmer weather! On March 1st, we will be instituting several new policies which will help us more effectively run the Turner Center. Please see the next page of the newsletter for more details. One significant change that you will notice is that payment will be required in order to ensure your spot in a class or for a trip. We accept cash or checks (made payable to FiftyForward) during our Turner Center Lobby hours which are Monday-Friday from 9am3pm. Thank you for your cooperation with these new policies. Beginning in March, we will also start gathering census information about each of the classes and educational sessions that we conduct. Please be on the lookout for sign-in sheets at each activity. This new sign-in system will help the staff accurately keep track of the number of members attending our activities. We are excited to announce that we will be partnering with the Vanderbilt Memory and Alzheimer's Center for a three-part series entitled "What every older adult needs to know about Alzheimer's disease and dementia." These FREE lunchtime sessions will take place from 11:30am-1:00pm on April 18th, April 25th and May 2nd. We are taking signups early as we know that this is a very popular topic that effects all of us in some way. This month is National Nutrition Month and we hope that you will take advantage of the numerous SilverSneakers classes that are available in our facility as well as the wide variety of fitness equipment to suit everyone's needs. All the best, Megan P.S. Look out for a Member Survey in the coming month! We would like to hear from you as to how we are doing and to find out if there are any other program offerings that the staff should consider this year.
NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS FiftyForward J. L. TURNER CENTER POLICIES EFFECTIVE MARCH 1, 2013 We require payment in advance if you sign up for a trip, class or program with a fee. This is the only way to guarantee that your spot is reserved. Cash or checks made payable to FiftyForward are accepted. Payments can be processed by an Ambassador or FiftyForward staff member during our business hours - Monday-Friday from 9 am-3 pm. If there is no fee for the activity, please sign up in our lobby. We greatly appreciate your help!
FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center Cancellation & Refund Policies Cancellation Policy The FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center staff reserve the right to cancel a program or trip in the event that minimum enrollment numbers are not reached or due to inclement weather. In the event of a cancellation, any member who has paid for the program or trip will be given a credit for the full amount paid. Credits will be issued within 5 business days of the cancelled program or trip and the list of credits will be maintained by FiftyForward staff and volunteers. These credits can be redeemed for another class, day trip or program and will expire at the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2013).
Refund Policy for Classes/Trips over $20 The FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center staff will only issue refunds for a class or trip valued at over $20 if the request is made 1 week prior to the class or trip. This timeframe will allow the staff to notify someone on the waiting list that a spot has become available for the class or program. Refund checks will be issued within two weeks of the date that the member cancelled the class or trip and will be mailed to the member’s home. Some examples include: oil painting/watercolor classes, Renaissance Center trips, TPAC shows, etc.
If you have any questions about these policies, please see a FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center staff member. Thank you!
VOLUNTEER & STAFF NEWS VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT It’s our pleasure to brag about our ever smiling, kind Baby Boomer Ambassadors: Sheila Powers and Connie Hendrickson. On Wednesday afternoons Sheila holds down the fort. She’s our incredible event- call-reminder guru, History and Genealogy buff, rescue dog loving, retired military powerhouse. If it’s Monday morning, Connie is working her magic; she is truly one of the sweetest people we have ever meet. Just being with Connie makes everything seem a little better, a little brighter. If it’s Monday morning or Wednesday afternoon stop by and get to know these two women — who have hearts of gold! Thank you, Sheila and Connie for making our Turner Center a joyful place.
ASK THE STAFF—JUST FOR FUN! If money were not an object, where would you like to travel? Megan Roller, Turner Center Director This is a tough question as there are so many places around the world that I would like to go. But, I think that if I had to chose I would select Australia. When I was in high school, I was able to travel to the eastern coast of Australia with a group of other high school students in a 3 week exchange program. We traveled from the capital (Canberra), into Sydney, up through Brisbane and concluded with snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef. It has been a goal of mine to return to Australia and experience the continent again. However, I think that I would appreciate it more this time and I would love to hike in the Outback on this trip! Nicole Longuevan, Transportation Coordinator & Program Assistant If money were no object, I would buy a Winnebago and travel the lower 48 states attending food festivals. Some particular festivals I'd like to attend are the Southern Fried Food Festival in Columbia, TN, the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, CO, the Food Network South Beach Wine and Food Festival in Miami Beach, FL or Chilifest in Snook, TX. Of course, since money is no object, I'd be buying tickets for the whole town, too. Kristin Blackburn, Program Director Nova Scotia, Canada the ‘New Scotland’ - my mothers homeland, is the first place that comes to mind. Who wants to join me? I’m buying.
