For those of you who do not have access to a computer, a staff member will be available at the center on Tuesday, November 15 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. to assist folks in completing the survey. Construction Update We are moving forward with Phase 1 of our renovation project which includes remodeling our front entrance. We are currently anticipating a start date of mid to late November. Once we know the exact start date, we will communicate it to you via email, phone and letter. Be sure to take a look at some of the pictures hanging in the front entrance that show what our new improvements will look like!

Election Day Room Changes Tuesday, November 8th All our Members artists for sharing their wonderful work with us for our Member Art Show; Life Care Center of Old Hickory and Chef Wilton for providing the refreshments for the Art Show; Windlands East for providing the cookies at the Art Show; HCA for providing the cupcakes for our Halloween Party; Captain D’s for providing the coupons for our Birthday Folks; and to all our amazing volunteers: we couldn’t run the place without you!

If you didn’t know, our Center is an election polling location. National, State and Local Elections will be taking place on November 8. The Election Commission has requested the use of our Party Room that day. Therefore, our Silver Sneakers class will be held in the Social Room on the 8th and Metro Meals will be in Classroom 2. Please do not go into the Party Room unless you are voting.

Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart About Your Mouth Wednesday, November 9th On November 9th at 10:00 am, come learn how to maintain your oral health and learn tips and tricks to keep your smile healthy and more! Did you know older adults are more prone to tooth loss, oral cancer and periodontal disease? FiftyForward is partnering with Oral Health America to bring you this oral health training. A trained dental hygienist will offer an interactive presentation. You’ll leave with great information and a GOODY BAG to help you care for your smile!

Tasty Tuesday: Thanksgiving Feast With a Blues Twist Tuesday, November 15th Our third Tuesday of the month lunch on Tuesday, November 15th will feature Les Kerr, who was enjoyed immensely by those who went to the Grinder’s Switch Radio Show in August. Les’ music, including well-known standards as well as originals, is country meets bluegrass, blues and gulf coast. Les Kerr’s concert highlights include headlining annual Mardi Gras concerts at Nashville’s Bluebird Café since 1992. He has also performed at the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Country Music Marathon and at Nashville’s official Independence Day celebration.

Before the music begins, enjoy our traditional Thanksgiving fare of turkey and dressing, cranberry salad, green beans, roll and dessert at 11:30 am. Purchase a $6.00 ticket at the front desk by Friday, November 11!

It’s that time of year again when you have to enroll or re-enroll in Medicare! Need help?

SHIP (State Health Insurance Program) will be here November 21st at 10:00 am to do a presentation to help you with your Medicare Maintenance and Open Enrollment. There are a few slight changes in Medicare that will be addressed. They can answer questions about Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans, Medicare Part D Plans, Supplemental Insurance and some limited TennCare questions. They will then have appointment slots available from 10:15 am until 1:00 pm to help you enroll for 2017. Sign up at the front desk.

Depression and Bipolar Support Group If you suffer from Depression, Bipolar Disorder, other mood and emotional disorders or are a caregiver for those who suffer, join the DBSA group on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m.

The Moving Wall: Vietnam Veterans Memorial Replica The Moving Wall is a large-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. It is very rare for the visiting memorial to travel near to us as it only makes appearances throughout the nation twice each month. As a special way to honor Veterans Day the following Friday, we will travel up to Springfield to take it in, as well as a special Remembrance Event at 11:00 am at Springfield Memorial Gardens. Afterward, head to the beloved Catfish House for yummy fried fish and sides served family-style.

Saturday, November 5 - 10:00 am $7 + Lunch Election Day -- Last Hiking Trip of 2016 Hiking Club will end the season the way it began, with a walk over the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge and through the city with stops at the shops on the way to our lunch destination.

Savannah Candy Kitchen, Goo Goo, and Mike’s Ice Cream are all possible stops. We’ll rest our feet at the place you vote for before traipsing back over the bridge to return to the van. Elect your pick of restaurant from new candidates Acme Feed & Seed or The Farm House, go with the incumbent Rock Bottom (we ate here in March), or “do a write-in” and make a new suggestion! Menus are available at the front desk to help you make your choice. We’ll let you know which wins out before the big day.

Tuesday, November 8 - 10:15 am - $6 + Lunch Madison Travelers to Music City Hayride Head to the Texas Troubadour Theater with the Madison Travelers for a 2 1/2 hour show of your favorite traditional country music. Enjoy reserved seats, and no, there isn’t really a hayride involved!

First, we’ll dine at Santa Fe Cattle Co. where you will pick your choice of 9 oz. Sirloin, Southern Fried Catfish, Grilled Chicken (marinated or BBQ) or a 1/2 slab of BBQ Ribs. All entrees come with Salad, Baked Potato and Dessert. As a special bonus, lunch is included in the cost of the trip! But, please bring a tip along with you.

It’s that time of year where we thoughtfully consider how thankful we are for what we have been gifted and stop to be sure others less fortunate can enjoy the gifts of the season as well. Find out more about how we can help out our community as we tour the Second Harvest Food Bank warehouse in this rendition of Del’s Destination: Discovery! The walking/standing tour will last approximately 30 minutes and stairs will not be encountered.

Beforehand, lunch at the café on site and enjoy soup, salad and sandwich fare for $8.

One-On-One Sewing Instruction Available Have you always wanted to learn how to sew but just never took the time? Now is your chance! Patricia Burks, who has over 22 years sewing experience, will provide one-on-one sewing instruction for only $15 for a 1½ class. All tools and materials are provided and she will teach you whatever you prefer—crafts, clothes, or even designing! Classes are available on Thursdays between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Challenge for Hunger: Donate Food for CCM While you may be lucky enough to have a Thanksgiving dinner, there are some folks in our area that don’t even have peanut butter for that day! Beginning November 14, the Christian Cooperative Ministry, located just down the street from us, will distribute more than 250 special food boxes to the tables of many of our Madison neighbors in need. How can you help? We challenge our clubs and classes (plus you individuals!) to br ing in donations of these food items: instant potatoes, stuffing mix, canned sweet potatoes, cornbread mix, macaroni and cheese, canned corn and green beans, cake mix, small bags of flour, small bottles of oil, and chicken broth. Please bring donations to the front desk.

Holiday Toy Drive Starts November 8 The Nashville Vet Center provides a continuum of care, counseling, outreach, and services to Tennessee Combat Veterans and their families. Again this year, FiftyForward is holding a gift/toy drive to benefit the children of those veterans. It is because of this event, that these 40 to 60 children receive Holiday gifts (ex: a toy and some small item (socks, stocking stuffer, etc.). We will have a bin for new toy and stocking stuffer donations starting November 8 near the large calendar starting November 8. Please consider donating!

Each month, we spotlight a different program here at the Center on the bulletin board near the office. This month, we want to spotlight YOU and what you are thankful for! Please post pictures, poems, or just one word of what you are thankful for. If you need paper, let us know!

Gift Wrapping at Knowles December 1 RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) will again host and sponsor a "Volunteer Gift Wrapping" event on Thursday, December 1st at the FF Knowles Center from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. RSVP will supply gifts, wr apping paper , supplies, and lunch for the event.

They will also be assisting the FF Foster Grandparent Program with their “Granny” gift wrapping too! If you are interested, just show up!

Deck the Halls on December 2 Join us in making everything merry and bright around the Center by decking the halls in grand Christmas-style! All are welcome to help from 10:00 to Noon on Friday, December 2nd! In appreciation of Santa’s helpers, it will be our pleasure to treat all those participating to a pizza lunch!

—The Madison Public Library is presenting “Delicious Eats with Hidden Fruits and Veggies” on Thursday, November 17 at 10:30 am. At this free event, you’ll learn new tips and tricks for sneaking more fruits and vegetables into your diet. This class will include a cooking demo and recipe tasting. A Kroger gift card door prize will be given to one participant.

Where are we located?

Even though our address is 301 Madison Street, we are physically located at the end of Douglas Street. There is a sign out front that says ‘FiftyForward Madison Station.’ Parking and entrance are in the back.

Our quarterly Flea Market on Friday, November 4 will be the biggest one of the year!

This time it will be in conjunction with our annual Craft Fair so at press time we had over 20 vendors!! (V ery few booths remain, so if you are interested call us at 615-860-7180 as soon as possible to check availability!)

You can get some great deals and even some early Christmas presents between 9:00 until 2:00 pm! Plus, we’ll also be having a bake sale with individually-wrapped goods and sell bar-b-cue sandwiches at lunch as a fundraiser for our center. We always appreciate your donations of home-baked goods. Please bring these donations to the front office individually-wrapped and ready to sell. Live music at noon!!

We will also have a door prize of a beautiful Christmas wreath, donated and handmade by Denise Hamer, at noon. See it at the front desk!
