Letter from the Center Director Fall weather is upon us and the holidays are just around the corner. I love this time of year and look forward to our time together this month. My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving with the great food, family, and time for gratitude. Speaking of, I am very grateful to be here at Madison Station and I am forever thankful for your warmth, care, participation, Beginning November 27th, and service here at our center.

our new hours will be Monday-Thursday 8:00am-4:00pm and Friday 8:00am-3:30pm.

Shorter days are also upon us, in fact, remember to set your clocks back on Sunday, November 5th for Daylight Savings Time. Additionally, I want to announce a minor change to our center hours set to begin the Monday after Thanksgiving on November 27th. The new hours will be Monday-Thursday from 8:00am-4:00pm and Friday from 8:00am-3:30pm. Based on our numbers at the end of the day, feedback from our advisory board, and building security considerations we have decided to close thirty minutes earlier. The center will still open for special events in the evenings when scheduled.

Letter from the Program Director November is one of my favorite months: the weather is cooler, but not too cool; the leaves are at their peak colors and haven’t completely fallen yet; and the holiday season hasn’t gotten completely crazy yet, but still you get to enjoy great food and company. This has been a fun month to plan too. Five of the eight trips I planned were recommended by members—so I really hope you like them! Tasty Tuesday has a “Thanks” and “Remembering” theme and yet again this month our members are the entertainment! Plus you have three opportunities for Bingo this month, with Big Bingo on the 9th honoring our veterans with a free ticket! I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and count you among my blessings! —Julie Reeves

Holiday Flea Market & Craft Fair November 3 Our BIG Holiday Flea Market will be held Friday, November 3 fr om 9:00 am until 2:00 pm. This will also be our annual Craft Fair. No space is available.

Please help us advertise this sale by word of month plus by putting it on your Facebook page!

The day will also include our fundraising committee selling homemade goodies, Amish jams and pickles; bar-b-cue sandwiches, chips and drinks sold beginning at 11:30 am; and live music beginning at 11:30 am.

We need more baked goods to sell so your donations are appreciated! Bring individually-wrapped items by 8:30 am.

November and December Closings Please make note that the Center will be CLOSED on Thur sday, November 23 and Friday, November 24 for the Thanksgiving Holidays. Remember on Monday, November 27, the center will begin the new hours of Monday-Thursday from 8:00am-4:00pm and Friday from 8:00am-3:30pm.

Go ahead and mark your calendars for our December closings as well. The center will be closed December 25, 26 and 27.

Un-Traditional Thanksgiving Cooking With Brandy Tuesday, November 7 Join our Center Director, Brandy Lamb, and members from the FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center for a cooking class. We will cook up some untraditional Thanksgiving sides, which will include some healthy versions of traditional sides and tips on how to lighten up traditional dishes, plus some out-of-the-box ideas to spice things up! The class will include demonstrations, a hands on element, recipes, and taste testing! Meets at 1:30 am in the Party Room Kitchen. Cost is $5.00 for all supplies. Sign up at the front desk.

Tasty Tuesday: Thankfully Reminiscing Tuesday, November 21 Give thanks at 11:30 am in the Party Room with traditional Thanksgiving fare of turkey and dressing, cranberry salad, green beans, roll and dessert. After you are stuffed, reminisce with Nancy McDougal about past Thanksgivings and times when things were simpler.

Following her presentation, members of the Wisdoms Writers will share their musings on the holidays and what they are thankful for.

Watercolor Class November 14 Our first watercolor class was a hit! All the students had nothing but praise for instructor Kim Lane, so we are bringing her back Tuesday, November 14. This month fr om 9:30 to 11:30 am, explor e “Wonderful Water Creatures” and create a larger scale painting, exploring the concept of water color resist with liquid water color and painted resist medium. Feel free to bring your own books or images of sea creatures for reference. All supplies will be provided, just bring your 'can do' attitude.' Great for beginners! Cost is $12.00 per person.

Everyday, games are being played in our social room. Currently, the most popular card game is Skip-Bo. Players are also enjoying Hand and Foot. On Tuesdays, we have a Bridge Group that meets at 10:30 am. On Wednesdays, Mexican Train Dominoes meets at 12:30 pm.

Our pool room has four pool tables, cues, and balls. Come join the fun!

*Crochet for Beginners/Crochet Club – Wednesdays at 12:00 p.m. Led by Paulette Spalding. Bring an “H” needle and yarn and Paulette will be happy to show you the basics of crochet. Recycling of Cans We recycle aluminum cans used here in the center. The receptacle for EMPTY cans is in the fitness center beside the vending machines. Please do not put anything except cans in this container. Please do not bring in cans from outside the center.

Reiki Sessions: Reiki Master Cyndi Clark offers Reiki sessions (Japanese hands-on healing) on Fridays beginning at 12:00 pm for $15/15 min; $25/30 min. Appointments can be made at the front desk. C2.

Second Harvest Food Donations: Bring non-perishable foods to help others. Will be donated to the CCM down the street, which is the busiest Second Harvest Center in Nashville.

Therapeutic Massage: Sue Truitt provides massages at her home, which is close to the Center.

The Thrifty Spender: Shopping and Lunch Thursday, Nov. 2 - 9:30 am - $3.00 + Lunch First, we’ll go to the Big Lots Shopping Plaza, where you can choose to shop at Big Lots, Dollar Tree, and/or Old Navy. Then, we’ll give you time to shop at Wal-Mart across the street. Before we head back to the center, we’ll stop at Burger King for lunch.

McGavock High School Christmas Craft Fair Saturday, Nov. 4 - 9:00 am - $6.00 + Lunch Get some Christmas shopping done early or just enjoy browsing over 120 booths of hand-made items at the 37th Annual McGavock High Christmas Craft Fair.

Admission is free, although donations are accepted.

Live music will be played throughout the day.

You’ll have a couple of hours to shop and then after we’ll go eat a hearty meal at Vittles Restaurant, where down home cooking is ‘fast and friendly.’ Enjoy southern favorites like chicken n’ dumplins, country fried steak, or fried catfish, or if you want to stick to the lighter side, sandwiches and salads are available as well.

Hiking Club to Richland Creek Greenway & The Café at Thistle Farms Wednesday, Nov. 8 - 9:30 am - $7.00 + Lunch Join Julie for the last hike of the year as we foray through the paved trails of Richland Creek. Surrounded by the woods, water, and a beautiful golf course, you’ll forget you are only two miles away from the hustle and bustle of downtown.

Afterwards, we’ll lunch at The Café at Thistle Farms, part of Thistle Farms' social enterprise, which heals, empowers, and employs women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction. The Café serves globally inspired, locally sourced food. You’ll also have the opportunity to buy the products made by the Thistle Farms ladies and the farmers, and suppliers of the café.

Noble Springs Dairy & The Country Boy Friday, Nov. 10 - 10:15 am - $20.00 + Lunch Spend a day in the country with friends, first with lunch in Leiper’s Fork at The Country Boy restaurant where they serve good ole' fashioned Southern style cooking including Country Fried Steak, homemade mac & cheese, and made from scratch biscuits.

Next, we’ll go to Noble Springs Dairy, a goat farm, for a tour which spotlights the goats, but we’ll also learn about various farm animals, see the milking parlor, and learn about the cheese making process. The tour includes many hands on opportunities. At the conclusion of the tour visitors will have the opportunity to sample and purchase some of their delicious products.

Madison Travelers to Granville, TN & the TB Sutton General Store Saturday, Nov. 11 - 9:15 am - $9.00 + Lunch Join the Madison Travelers as they journey to Historic Granville, an hour east of Nashville. Built in 1800's, the General store has continuously served the families of the Granville area. It offers a converted feed room into a dining room offering family style country cooking. Furnishings and memorabilia are on display; unique gifts and merchandise are for sale.

After our early lunch, you’ll have an hour and a half and your choice to visit the Granville Museum, the Sutton Homestead and Pioneer Village (cost $4.00), Granville Gift & Antique Shop, or the Whistle Stop Saloon and ice cream parlor. All of this is within walking distance of the restaurant.

Inglewood & Friends to Federal Grove Thursday, Nov. 16 - 10:15 am - $8.00 + Lunch Journey with Inglewood to Federal Grove Bed and Breakfast to “taste the Kentucky South.” Enjoy the tastes of a fine, old-fashioned menu steeped in a rich historical setting. Note: One meat, two sides, and a bread is $9.95.

Perhaps pick up a bottle of the country’s southernmost pure maple syrup harvested on site.

Afterward, venture to the local furniture store and Amish bakery before heading home.

Del’s Destination: Cathedral of the Incarnation & Lunch at Swett’s Tuesday, Nov. 28 - 9:15 am - $7.00 + Lunch This will be the first of several trips to visit different religious cultures and the buildings in which they worship in. The Cathedral of the Incarnation parish dates back to 1909 and is currently the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nashville. You’ll have a guided tour of the basilica-style architecture of the building, with its yellow glazed brick and red tile roof. The church was modeled on one of the most famous churches in Rome, the church of San Martino ai Monti (St. Martin's on the Hill).

Afterwards, we’ll eat at Swett’s, that has been serving fine Southern food cafeteria-style since 1954.

Nashville Predators vs. Vancouver Canucks Thursday, November 30 - 5:45 pm - $56.00 Come experience the Western Conference Champions playing on their home ice. FiftyForward has gotten special ticket pricing for the evening, so other centers will be joining us. The game begins at 7:00 pm, so we are leaving a little early to give us time to get snacks, find our seats, etc. This is also a great price because it includes your transportation—you won’t have to pay $20 to park!

Has Your Identity Been Compromised?

Most likely all of you have heard about the Equifax breach that lasted from mid-May through July. The hackers accessed people’s names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some instances, driver’s license numbers. They also stole credit card numbers for about 209,000 people and dispute documents with personal identifying information for about 182,000 people. Was your identity and/or credit comprised? Find out from Lauren Angulo of our FiftyForward Victory Over Crime Program in a quick 15minute confidential meeting. She can also sign you up for free credit monitoring in case you cards are compromised again. Challenge for Hunger: Donate Food for CCM While you may be lucky enough to have a Thanksgiving dinner, there are some folks in our area that don’t even have peanut butter for that day! Beginning November 13, the Christian Cooperative Ministry, located just down the street from us, will distribute more than 250 special food boxes to the tables of many of our Madison neighbors in need. How can you help? We challenge our clubs and classes (plus you individuals!) to br ing in donations of these food items: instant potatoes, stuffing mix, canned sweet potatoes, cornbread mix, macaroni and cheese, canned corn and green beans, cake mix, small bags of flour, small bottles of oil, and chicken broth. Please bring donations to the front desk.

Holiday Toy Drive Starts November 8 The Nashville Vet Center provides a continuum of care, counseling, outreach, and services to Tennessee Combat Veterans and their families. Again this year, FiftyForward is holding a gift/toy drive to benefit the children of those veterans. It is because of this event, that these 40 to 60 children receive Holiday gifts (ex: a toy and some small item (socks, stocking stuffer, etc.). We will have a bin for new toy and stocking stuffer donations starting November 8 near the large calendar until December 7. Please consider donating!

Deck the Halls on December 1 Join us in making everything merry and bright around the Center by decking the halls in grand Christmas-style! All are welcome to help from 10:00 to Noon on Friday, December 1st! In appreciation of Santa’s helpers, it will be our pleasure to treat all those participating to a pizza lunch!

Gift Wrapping at Knowles December 11 RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) will again host and sponsor a "Volunteer Gift Wrapping" event on Monday, December 11 at the FF Knowles Center from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. RSVP will supply gifts, wr apping paper , supplies, and lunch for the event.

They will also be assisting the FF Foster Grandparent Program with their “Granny” gift wrapping too! If you are interested, just show up!

First, we have a 3/4 sleeve baseball jersey. The sleeves are black and the torso is gray with a black FiftyForward logo in the middle.

Next, we have our 20th anniversary long-sleeved T-shirts with our logo in the pocket area and then “Established in 1996” on the back. These are available in purple and gray.

Music Jam is Back on Fridays!

Starting Friday, November 10 the Friday Music Jam is back! This time it will be held during the day from Noon to 3:00 pm in the Social Room. Like befor e there will be open mic, so bring your voices and instruments share your talents with everyone. Unlike before, no food will be served. Music Jam will be held on November 10th and November 17th; they will then evaluate attendance, etc. on decide on dates for December.

‘The Gift of Gospel’ Fundraiser December 7 You won’t want to miss the event our Fundraising Committee has planned for Thursday, December 7! Four musicians from the U.S. Association of Gospel Entertainers and Musicians, Charlene Harrison, Paul Sparks, Sandi Kay, and Mike Dunbar, will be performing, “The Gift of Gospel”, four different styles of gospel music for us that evening.

Prior to their performance, we will serve a delicious baked potato bar with all the fixins’, including chili! Also includes your drink and dessert. Tickets are $15.00 (show only tickets are $10.00.

Dinner will be at 6:00 pm (seating begins at 5:45) and the show begins at 7:00 pm. Purchase tickets by Tuesday, December 5.

Even though our address is 301 Madison Street, we are physically located at the end of Douglas Street. There is a sign out front that says ‘FiftyForward Madison Station.’ Parking and entrance are in the back.

RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

For two months, we have been offering pool table lessons as well as collecting donations for funds to recover our pool tables. In that time, we have almost raised enough ($500) to recover one. Brandy is now researching companies to have it done ASAP. In the meantime, we are still offering pool lessons and collecting donations for the rest of the tables. Two of our players, T.C. and Paulette will teach you for only $5.00 for a half-hour lesson. If you are interested, stop by the front desk to schedule; Paulette is available Tuesdays from 10-11am; T.C. is available anytime Monday-Friday. If you would like to donate money toward the recovering of the tables (estimated cost, $500 per table), please see Brandy or Julie.
