All Aboard for Whistlestop 2017 Have you seen the ‘thank you’ train in the lobby of FiftyForward Madison Station? It thanks those who support our “Whistlestop” fundraiser, which is boarding Thursday, March 9! The “Whistlestop” is a silent auction, dinner, and awards night that brings our community together for the many programs offered by FiftyForward Madison Station. Each year our center serves over 1,000 adults 50+, and all monies raised go directly to support those programs.

Welcome New Program Director: A Familiar Face!

I am so happy to announce the promotion of Julie Reeves to Program Director of FiftyForward Madison Station! Julie has been with us for the past four years as our Office Manager/Volunteer Coordinator, and has done a fabulous job. She has slowly been adding her talents into our programming by taking on the responsibility of our monthly newsletter, driving trips here and there, leading a “Strength Training” class and coaching the “Madison Misfits” softball team. I have already heard many positive and excited comments that our new Program Director is a familiar, friendly face who likes to have fun! Please join me in congratulating Julie on her new position! We will be hiring for a new Office Manager to replace Julie, but in the meantime Kathleen Phillips will be filling in for us on the front desk.

I am so excited to become your new Program Director! I loved my job as Office Manager and I know I’ll love this job even more. As with all changes, this will be a period of transition, and I ask for your patience as I learn this new position.

Thank you to everyone for your patience during our interior remodel. The restroom and lobby projects should be completed by March 9. Find Out If Your Property Taxes Can Be “Frozen” Wednesday, March 8 FiftyForward Madison Station will be hosting a “Tax Freeze Informative Session” with Metropolitan Trustee Charlie Cardwell on Wednesday, March 8 at 2:00 p.m. If you ar e 65 or older and own a home in Davidson County, you are encouraged to bring your tax returns to see if you may qualify for this service. If you have any questions prior to this meeting, please call Andrea Vaughn at 615-862-6140.

Tasty Tuesday: The Luck ‘O The Irish Tuesday, March 21 Break out your Irish spirit and your green clothes on Tuesday, March 21st! At 11:30 am, we’ll feast on the traditional Irish menu of corned beef, boiled potatoes, carrots, cabbage, cornbread, cookie, and tea.

Afterward, Les Kerr, who performed for us at November’s Tasty Tuesday, will perform your favorite Irish ballads and some original songs. Les has performed frequently at Nashville’s Bluebird Café since 1992. He has also performed at the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Country Music Marathon and at Nashville’s official Independence Day celebration.

Skyline Lunch & Learn Thursday, March 30 Tristar Skyline Medical Center will be providing a FREE Lunch & Learn on Tuesday, March 30. Our lunch that day will be chicken and r ice casser ole, gr een beans, r oll, blackberry cobbler and sugar-free peach tea at 11:30 am.

After lunch, our speaker will be Brooke Scurlock, a nurse practitioner who works with Dr. Gregory Head at Urology Associates. Her presentation will be on “Non-surgical Management of Overactive Bladder”.

Laughs & Crafts with Sara Jo – Each second Thursday 9-11 am have fun socializing while making crafts. Rehearsals are Tuesdays 10 a.m. This is a Reader’s Theater so you don’t have to worry about memorizing lines. Monday, March 20 - 10:15 am - $8 + Lunch Hiking Club Returns!

Spring is the perfect time to recommit to exercising outdoors while soaking up your daily dose of Vitamin D from the sun! On Hiking Club’s first trip of the year, head to Stones River Greenway

by Kohl’s in Hermitage with a group of friends for this month’s expedition.

Wednesday, March 29 - 9:00 am - $5 + Lunch Madison Travelers Take In “The Cash Legacy” Studio Tenn’s founders hit the big-time on Broadway but wanted a “normal” life, so they came back home to Franklin and began their own studio.

Join the Madison Travelers as they take in Studio Tenn’s original production, “The Cash Legacy” at the Ryman for one night only. “The Cash Legacy: A Musical Salute to the Man in Black” has a singermusician cast, including Mandy Barnett and Grammy winner Ashley Cleveland, who present the catalog of Johnny Cash through various musical genres and updated arrangements. *Note: No dinner stop on this trip. Show begins at 8:00 pm.

*Priority Seating - Madison members receive first priority seating. If a trip does not fill up, members from other centers are welcome to come. A waiting list will be utilized for this purpose. *Late arrivals - The trip will leave at the stated departure time. Please be on time. *Cancellations and No Shows - A credit will be issued if a cancellation is given within 48 hours of a trip’s scheduled departure. However, in the case of a trip involving preordered tickets or reservations, a credit will be given only if we can refill your seat. Except for unusual circumstances, no refunds or transfers will be made for trips that a member did not attend. *Credits - New credits will expire at the end of the month after the month in which the trip was scheduled. For example, a credit given for a trip canceled in January will be able to be used through the end of February. Trip credits may only be used toward other trips.

Part 2 - Dementia: What to Expect & How To Respond March 2 As a growing number of friends and loved ones are affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia, you may soon find that someone close to you has a new set of needs.

On Thursday, March 2 at 10:00 a.m., Kathy Johnson-Warner of Senior Helpers in Hendersonville will take us through part two and show us positive physical approaches and how to have meaningful interactions with those who suffer from dementia-related illnesses. Sign up in the FREE Event Binder on the front desk to RSVP.

Spring Sing - March 16 After a quiet winter we are ready to gear up for some fun with the return of Karaoke on Thursday, March 16 at 12:30 pm! Join “DJ Dottie” Dillard to sing your favorite song selections or just to enjoy being serenaded! All those who attend will be eligible to win door prizes throughout the program. Karaoke will be back to its regular schedule of each second Thursday of the month at 12:30 pm on April 13.

Glass Painting Class: “Verses on Vases” March 23 & 30 Lana Flatt will be teaching a two-part Glass Painting class beginning on Thursday, March 23rd from 9:30 to 11:30am. Br ing your own glass bottle or vase to paint or pick from one that will be available. The first day you will become familiar with the brushes and the strokes which they can make. Then you will paint your bottle using these strokes. You’ll choose a verse that you would like and over the next week Lana will etch it into your bottle. Return on Thursday, March 30th at 9:30 am to paint the letter ing onto your bottle.

Lana will then bake each vase or bottle so that you will be able to pick up your work of art on Friday the 31st.

The cost is $5.00 per person and includes all your supplies. An example is at the front counter. Hurry to sign up at the front desk as the maximum class size is 7!

Tristar Skyline Medical Center is currently looking to bring on volunteers who would be willing to volunteer at their Patient Information in the main lobby greeting, giving out room Ready to Join? Desk numbers, delivering flowers, giving directions etc.

They are also looking for volunteers to work in the A membership is just Gift Shoppe assisting customers. And thirdly, they $120 per year. Bank draft have an opening in the Women’s Imaging dept. of just $10 per month is (mornings only) helping register ladies coming in available as well. We are for their mammogram x-rays . Did you know that FiftyForward has its own Travel Agency? It is located at our Donelson location. Joan Sincerbox takes members (and non-members for a 10% up-charge) “on the road” for day trips and Janice Judd takes them on overnight trips across the country and around the world! NEW—Bowling Club Starts This Month Our Bowling Trip last month was quite a hit! That’s why we’ve decided to give it a try every month! Bowlers are invited to join Donelson FiftyForward members on the THIRD FRIDAY of every month—which would be Friday, March 16, this month—at 2:00 pm at the Strike and Spare in Donelson (2710 Old Lebanon Rd.) Cost per game is only $1.00! Shoes are only $1.00 as well. At present, we are not playing competitively, but if enough interest is shown, Lisa, Donelson’s Program Director, and Julie will work on a Bowling Tournament.

Even though our address is 301 Madison Street, we are physically located at the end of Douglas Street. There is a sign out front that says ‘FiftyForward Madison Station.’ Parking and entrance are in the back.

We are changing the day we play Bunco to the third Monday of every month at 12:30 p.m. We need at least 4 to play this easy dice game, which only requires you to be able to roll the dice and count to 6! Free prizes are given to those who win the most and Bunco. Meet in the Social Room on Monday, March 20 this month at 12:30 p.m. if you want to play. We do need groups of four to play the game.

—National Humor Month! Apr il is National Humor Month. Each Day in April, we will post a funny joke or cartoon on the bulletin board in the lobby. Got one to share? See Julie. Please keep them clean!

—Health and Wellness Fair. This annual event will be held Friday, April 21st from 10:00 am to Noon. Over 25 vendor s will be her e pr oviding health screenings, giveaways, and great information. Every 15 minutes we will giving away door prizes as well. You won’t want to miss this fun day!
