FiftyForward Celebrates 60 Years We are proud and excited to announce that 2016 marks FiftyForward's 60th year of improving the lives of older adults in Middle Tennessee! There will be several events this year marking this milestone—one of which is coming April 1 (see the trip page).

Plus our communications department has developed 60th Anniversary logos for our contact with you in print and social media.

AARP Driving Course Thursday and Friday, March 24 & 25th The semi-annual AARP Driver Safety Course is back from 8:00 am to Noon on Thursday and Friday, March 24th and 25th. Jim Paris, the 55Alive Instructor, will lead you through the newly revised AARP Driver Course manual. Some insurance carriers even offer a discount if you take this course; check with your carrier to find out for sure. Cost is $15.00 for AARP members; $20.00 for non-AARP members. What is Stepping On?

Did You Know?

Stepping On is a program that has been researched and proven to reduce falls in older people.



It consists of a workshop that meets for two hours a week for seven weeks that will be led by Sam Garlock and Theresa Drews. In addition, local guest experts provide information on exercise, vision, safety, and medications.



 

More than one-third of people age 65 or older fall each year.

Falls are the leading cause of injury and hospitalization for trauma and death among older adults.

35% of people who fall become less active.

40% of people who enter a nursing home had a fall in the prior 30 days.

FiftyForward Madison Station’s Stepping On program is endorsed by the TN Department of Health. This FREE seven-week course will be held each Thursday from April 7th to May 19th between 10:00 am and noon.

To be able to attend, a Registration Appointment needs to be made.

Book Club – Discuss A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini – Available through Public Library. A story of two Afghan women and their struggle to survive over a 30 year period beginning with the Soviet Invasion and ending with the overthrow of the Taliban. March 23 at 1:00 pm.

Music for Seniors Music for Seniors returns after the winter break to present a glimpse into Opera. The Nashville Opera’s Mary Ragland Young Artists quartet will perform a variety of your favorite arias at FiftyForward Knowles.

Selected from over 100 applicants that audition each season, these artists are granted valuable performance experience. Next, head to Fenwick’s 300, a modern take on the traditional diner.

Monday, March 21 - 10:30 a.m. - $7 + Lunch Hiking Club The Cumberland River Greenway is a paved trail that follows the winding course of the Cumberland River through downtown Nashville. Most of the trail lies on the west/south bank of the river, but it does cross over the Shelby Street Bridge. After getting about an hour’s worth of exercise and river views, we’ll cross this bridge for lunch and continue our jaunt to Puckett’s on Church Street for some down-home vittles. Once we’re through, we’ll traipse back over the bridge to return to the van.

Dust off your dancing shoes to help celebrate our 60th Anniversary! Join us at the Grand Avenue Worldwide downtown as a DJ plays the hits from 1950s forward. A vintage car display featuring Rolls Royce and other classics will be seen. Heavy h’ordeuvres, beer, wine and refreshments will be on hand as well, so dress in your casual attire or in the outfit of your favorite decade as we dance the evening away. Dementia Workshop March 3

Our third dementia workshop will be Thursday, March 3rd at 10:00 am. A DVD will review the growing prevalence of dementia and help attendees understand how the progression of dementia will impact the person’s abilities.

A dementia caregiver support group will begin in April. Stay tuned to the newsletter.

Meditative Visual Art Class March 22 Before you paint—meditate! On Tuesday, March 22 from 10:00 to 11:00 am, we will have our second acr ylic painting class prefaced by 5-10 minutes of meditation to encourage receiving the most well-being possible from the painting experience. Cost is $15.00 per person. We will continue this each 4th Tuesday of the month as long as we have at least 5 attendees! Sign up at the front desk. Services for Visually Impaired Talk March 28 Second Sight invites you to join them to hear Susan Conder of the Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired tell about the services they have to offer on Monday, March 28th at 10:00 a.m. Please RSVP by signing up in the FREE Event Binder on the front desk. A limited number of seats are available as the chairs must be setup in a particular manner to accommodate the blind attendees.

Card-Making Group Interest Meeting March 29 Ever heard of the Martin Card Crusaders at FiftyForward Martin and their story of success in selling their homemade greeting cards? If you have any desire to try something similar, just want to make greeting cards with some other like-minded souls, or want tips on beginning this popular craft, sign up at the Front Desk. Then, come to the CardMaking Brainstorming Session before the Skyline Lunch and Learn from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 29th so we can make this group a reality!

Larry's Grand Ole Garage Diner is hosting an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner to benefit Amqui Station and Visitor's Center from 12:304:30 p.m.at Larry's Grand Ole Garage Diner, 768 Madison Square, on Sunday, March 6. Tickets are $10.00 and are available at the FiftyForward front desk, Amqui Station Visitor's Center, or Larry's Grand Ole Garage Diner.

Madison Clean Up Day will be Saturday, March 12 from 9:00 am until Noon in the parking lot of Cornerstone Nashville Church. There will the Shredding, Bulk-Item Drop Off, and Prescription Drug Disposal. You can also help pick up trash around Madison! Call 615-865-5400 for info.

We thank Shirley Kerkvliet and Arunee Tanner for cleaning our Fitness Center. They saw a need and jumped right in, vacuuming, dusting, and wiping down the exercise equipment!

The Easter Bunny will be busy in March! Two silver eggs and one golden egg will be hidden around the center on different dates. Inside each egg is a special prize!

The first egg will be hidden on Monday, March 7th, the second on Monday, March 14th and the golden egg on Monday the 21st. Each egg will remain hidden until found. If not found by the Friday after an egg is hidden, Sam will begin to give clues to the whereabouts of that specific egg. Happy hunting!

Relay for Life Team-Participants Needed!

Rivergate Mall will host their 2nd annual Relay for Life for our Madison Community on Saturday, April 9 beginning at 11:00 a.m. Relay For Life is a great opportunity to unite as a community to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society through a walk. This year FiftyForward Madison Station will have a team and we would love to have you join us. There are three ways you can help: 1. Sign up to join our team and help walk at the event. You can walk as little or as much as you like!

2. Are you a cancer survivor? We need you! Join us for the Survivor lap to kick off the event and receive a free t-shirt. See the front desk to register.

3. Donate to our team! We will be trying to raise $1,000 for the American Cancer Society.

National Nutrition Month Free Presentation March 31

SS Classic Cancelled March 18 Our March 18 SilverSneakers Classic class will be cancelled due the Stamp Show being set up for March 19-20. We apologize for the inconvenience but invite you stamp enthusiasts to check out thousands of stamps at our center over the weekend!

National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign sponsored annually by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Join an open discussion and presentation about the importance of food choice and developing sound eating and physical activity habits on Thursday, March 31st at 10:00 a.m. Sharing is encouraged! We want to hear about your health journey, experiences, and tips.

Also, come prepared to try exotic, new and unusual snacks, all healthy, of course!
