From the Director… Wow! What a wonderful “Sweet 16” Whistlestop Fundraiser we had last month. The event raised over $25,000 to help fund the many programs, services, and activities offered here at the center. Guests enjoyed a large silent auction and reception, followed by a fabulous meal catered by dinner sponsor CRAVE 1201 Catering. Emceed by Lelan Statom of NewsChannel 5, the highlights of the evening were the announcement of The Friday Night Music Jam Committee as the Madison Senior(s) of the Year, and David McMurry from the Madison-Goodlettsville Rotary as Conductor of the Year. Other candidates in the running for Conductor this year were Lonnie Jones of the Kiwanis Club of Madison and Karen Ramsey, President of the Madison-Rivergate Area Chamber of Commerce. Together these candidates raised over $6,000 for the center! The entertainment for the evening was a fun dance medley performed by center members and local youth volunteers sponsored by Ambassadors Formalwear by Gilda. Rivergate Mall will be hosting a Relay for Life for our Madison Community on Saturday, May 30. Relay For Life is an incredible opportunity to unite as a community to raise awareness for the American Cancer Society through an all-day walk. We would love to see if there is enough interest to get a team representing FiftyForward Madison Station. If we get enough people, we can split up the walking into 30 minute shifts. If you or someone you know has been affected by cancer and you would like to participate, please see Kelsey.

Lori Corley’s Final Farewell Wednesday, April 1 The hard-working Whistlestop volunteers. You all helped make a very successful event! The community Whistlestop Committee. Tasty Tuesday: Spring Garden Show Tuesday, April 21 Spring has sprung! Let’s help it along. Home Depot presents the Spring Gardening Tasty Tuesday on April 21st. Start the event at 11:30 a.m. with a salad-themed lunch consisting of chicken salad, cranberry Jell-O salad, garden salad, roll and cookie. Afterward, Home Depot of Madison’s own Lawn and Garden specialist, Jana Bryant, will address us on various gardening subjects. Come prepared to pepper her with your gardening questions. Everyone in attendance will also receive a gardening-themed giveaway. Purchase your $5.00 ticket at the front desk by Friday, A pril 17th.
“Best of Times”: Health and Wellness Expo Friday, April 24 FREE health screenings, demonstrations, door prizes, giveaways and snacks will be the order of the day on Friday, April 24th! Join us from 10:00 a.m. to noon for an amazing day featuring massages, blood pressure and glucose checks, safety tips, plus many more health and wellness screenings! Door prizes will be raffled off throughout the event. This is a great opportunity to invite your friends to visit our Center!
Spring Birthday Party & Skit Performance Thursday, April 30 At 1:30 p.m. celebrate those with March, April and May birthdays by indulging in cupcakes, ice cream and punch. All the attending spring babies will receive a coupon for a free meal at Captain D’s. Afterward, our charming and witty Reader’s Theater group, who brought us such gems as “Happily Never After” and “Last Stop Till Christmas,” will perform a variety of comedic skits for you. Flea Market Friday, May 1 The quarterly flea market is right around the corner! Breakfast items and barbecue sandwiches will be available for purchase at breakfast and lunch. Bible Conversation – Bible meets every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Book Club – Will meet and discuss Orphan Train by Christina Baker Cline at 1:00 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month, April 22nd. This semihistorical fiction novel about the fate of a modern orphan and that of a pre-war era orphan and how their tales combine is available at the public library. Brain Train – Mondays at 11:00 a.m. practice team trivia with the Brain Train team. Come for fun and/or to join! Bunco - Come play Bunco on the second Wednesday of every month at 12:30 p.m. We need at least 4 to play this easy dice game. Free prizes for those who win the most and Bunco. Bluebird Café Ride out to the famous Bluebird Café in Green Hills for their monthly Senior Show, which is always a hit featuring amazing songwriting talent! Enjoy free coffee and pastries as you are entertained by some wonderful artists. Wind up this pleasant excursion with lunch at Carrabba’s for some classic Italian-American fare. Monday, April 13 – 9:00 a.m. $7 + Lunch Madison Travelers Take in The Philadelphia Story Accompany the Madison Travelers as they partake of the sumptuous offerings at the Hermitage House Smorgasbord, a homemade southern style buffet, before soaking in a play at The Lakewood Theatre Company. The Philadelphia Story was a 1940 Broadway hit which starred Katharine Hepburn as Tracy Lord, a spoiled socialite. Divorced from Dexter Haven, she is now engaged to another spoiled socialite. A society paper sends a reporter out to cover the wedding arrangements each week. Tracy finds herself growing interested in the reporter, Mike Connor, and comedy ensues. Note: Dinner will cost $16.00 plus tip. Friday, April 17 – 5:00 p.m. $17 + Dinner Semi-Annual Miss Mary Bobo’s Tradition Spring has arrived and with it the much anticipated Miss Mary Bobo’s trip! Wednesday, April 22 – 9:30 a.m. $7 + Lunch FiftyForward First: Race Car Experience When was the last time you did something for the first time? FiftyForward First trips has another challenge for you! Ever dreamed of riding in a race car? The crew of the Rusty Wallace Racing Experience has offered the Center a reduced price for a 3-lap High-Speed Ride-Along in an authentic race car! Normally $129, we get to have this once in a lifetime chance at the price of $80! Try it out at the Nashville Super Speedway in Lebanon. Note: Wear comfortable clothes. You will be required to put a fire suit on over your clothes. For those who are interested in comping only to watch, you can sign up at the front desk and pay just $5.00. Saturday, April 25 – 12:15 p.m. $80 Inglewood & Friends to the Chocolate Covered Strawberry Inglewood and Friends invite you to journey with them to The Chocolate Covered Strawberry Café and Boutique in Gallatin. Peace of Mind Seminar Thursday, April 2 The goal of the Peace of Mind seminar is to teach the value of preparation. Family Legacy invites you to a special presentation on the importance of arranging your final wishes so your loved ones feel confident that you were given what you wanted. There are so many ways to volunteer: here at the Center, with FLIP, RSVP, Foster Grandparents, Metro Nutrition and so much more! In the month of April, the Spotlight Bulletin Board (found outside the door to the Billiards Room) displays a special salute to our Center’s volunteers. FiftyForward First trips is reissuing a challenge to you at the request of several members! Indoor rock climbing has lately grown in popularity and many new businesses can be found in the greater Nashville area. Sam can only plan this trip if enough people let her know that they’d be interested in this opportunity. If you may be interested, please sign up at the front desk. If we have at least 6 people on the Interest List, Sam will plan a trip.

FREE Tax Preparation Free tax preparation appointments are going fast! Certified tax preparers from AARP will be available between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. every Wednesday through April 15th. All you need to do is call (615) 860-7180 or come by the front desk to get an appointment. But hurry, slots are filling quickly! Also, be sure to bring proof of your healthcare insurance when coming for your scheduled appointment.
Parking Lot Lately we have had many suggestions to repaint the parking lot lines. The Strategic Planning Committee has been championing this effort for some time now. We hope that we shall see the parking lot resealed and painted in the near future. Thank you for voicing your concerns on this matter.
