THE WHISTLESTOP

18th Annual Whistlestop Dinner a Great Success! All Aboard! We are thrilled to announce that our Whistlestop event raised over $30,000 to help fund the many programs, services, and activities offered here at FiftyForward Madison Station. Guests enjoyed an extensive silent auction and reception, followed by a fabulous meal catered by sponsor CRAVE Catering. Emceed by Lelan Statom of NewsChannel 5, some highlights of the evening were the announcement of Del Dorr as the Senior of the Year, and Ron Smith, President of the Madison-Rivergate Area Chamber of Commerce as the Conductor of the Year. The other candidate in the running for Conductor this year was Ben Middleton, representing the Kiwanis Club of Madison. Together these candidates raised over $1,700 for the center. The entertainment for the evening was performed by “Easy,” a smooth jazz band that included one of our members on drums. The evening also included a fun feature performance from our “Loose Caboose Players.” They kept the audience laughing with their skits and songs! FiftyForward Madison Station is thankful to the following businesses for making the event possible: Title Sponsor: Dollar General Corporation; Conductors: Cigna, Vista Points Special Needs Trust, and The Memorial Foundation; and the Engineers: Signature Healthcare of Madison, Tri-Star Skyline, Wm. Massey Electric, Madison Rivergate Area Chamber of Commerce, Windlands East and Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery. I would also like to send a special thank-you to all of our members who participated in some way. Many of you purchased tickets, “puffs” of train smoke, donated auction items and volunteered. And personally I would also like to extend a HUGE thank you to all of our hard-working staff. Everyone “got on board” and worked extra hours to help us achieve our goal. I could not ask for a better team! Thank you all so very much and let’s do it again next year!

AMP: Aging Mastery Program Begins April 20 Interested in feeling better today and staying healthy for the future? Today, we are living longer —so it is good to be thinking about ways to engage in ongoing and positive ways to make the most of longevity. Thus, FiftyForward is excited to offer our members a wonderful program developed by the National Council on Aging called AMP, the “Aging Mastery Program.” It is an incentive-based program designed to inform, encourage and support aging adults as they take steps to improve their lives and stay engaged in their communities. AMP incorporates evidence-based materials, expert speakers, group discussion, and peer support to give participants the skills and tools they need to achieve measurable improvements in managing their health and remaining economically secure. The program aims to empower adults to make and maintain small, effective changes to their behaviors to live a healthier, happier and more secure life. Sessions include Medication Management, Financial Fitness, Sleep, Exercise and You, Advance Planning, and five more that relate to aging. The Aging Mastery Program will be offered from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays, beginning April 20 and will r un for 10 weeks. Thanks to a grant from The Community Foundation, FiftyForward is offering this $60 program FREE to our members. A graduation ceremony for participants at all FiftyForward locations will also take place, where they will receive AMP certification if they have completed 8 out of the 10 classes, plus rewards from the program. A limited number of spaces are available for the class so sign up quickly at the front desk!
