Letter from the Center Director May flowers are in bloom and the spring sunshine has been a wonderful sight, I hope you are enjoying both! We are continuing to wrap up and begin new renovations projects throughout the building. We hope you enjoying the upgrades: the addition of the Multi-purpose room, new paint and carpet in several rooms, front entrance ramp, and new windows in the Retreat Rooms. We have a couple important announcements for this month. First up, it’s Membership Survey time again! This is a very important tool for us and your voice counts. Please be sure to complete the survey either online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/J5TR3JD or stop by the front desk for a paper copy. Surveys are due by Friday, May 3. The results will be presented to the Advisory Council and used to help staff set goals and find ways to best serve you! Speaking of Advisory Council, this July the new term begins and spots will be available. We are seeking members interested in serving on the 20 member Council made up of 16 center members, 2 community members, and the Center and Program Directors. Those who serve on the Council speak as a representative of the center’s membership. Council members also serve on one or more of the following Committees: Activities, Membership, Fundraising, and/or Outreach. If you are interested in and supporting the center and staff by sharing ideas, concerns, and solutions to make the center even better then please let us know and we will submit your name to the nominating committee Thank you for all you do to make FiftyForward Madison Station a great place! Cheers, Brandy Lamb, Center Director

Tasty Tuesday: Native Bee Pollinators Tuesday, May 21 They will never ask, but bees need our help. As bees of all kinds decline, that leaves behind a pollination vacuum, and less pollination means lower food quality, higher food prices and threatened plant communities. Thus, large bee populations are in everyone’s best interest, and anyone who grows or uses plant products is a stake holder in bee conservation. Now more than ever, it is critical to consider practices that will benefit pollinators by providing habitats free of pesticides, full of nectar and pollen resources and with ample potential nesting resources. David Cook, a University of Tennessee Extension Agent for Davidson County, will be here May 21 to discuss how you can help our friends, the bees! Mr. Cook is involved in educating homeowner and commercial clients about issues concerning horticulture and agriculture. He also teaches training classes for Master Gardener programs and is a frequent guest speaker for garden clubs, horticultural associations, and commercial pesticide workshops. Representatives from Cigna-HealthSpring will be Lunch begins at 11:30 am with Honey Baked Ham, mashed here before and during potatoes, green bean casserole, roll and dessert. April ‘Showers’, Flowers & Fun! Some tears (showers) were shed at Program Director Julie Reeves’ Farewell Party in early April, but she pulled an “April Fool’s” joke on us and stayed until the end of the month! Watch out, you might see her some in May too!

Right: We are so proud of our Crochet Club, who made almost 100 hats for the American Heart Association to distribute to preemies, infants and toddlers in area hospitals. The adorable red hats tell physicians and caretakers that the child has a heart condition. This is just one of the charitable projects these ladies work on.
Technology professionals from Deloitte will be here Thursday, June 6 from 10 am to 1pm. Whether you are new to technology or an experienced user, the volunteers can help you learn more about your devices. Bring your phone, tablet, or laptop with you! In conjunction with Amqui Station’s Sunday Farmer Market (which begins in May), we will host a Community Flea Market & Yard Sale on June 9 from 11 am to 2 pm. A 10’ x 10’ booth space costs $15.00; tables can be rented for $5.00 (limited quantities available.). The Fundraising Committee will host the annual “MadTown Music Series” this summer. Dates and performers for the three dinner shows have not been selected yet, so stay tuned for more information!
