Civil Rights Room at the Nashville Library

Inglewood and Friends to Marathon Village

Friday, February 16 - 9:15 am - $7.00 + Lunch

Thursday, February 22 - 10:45 am - $7.00 + Lunch

The Civil Rights Collection at the Nashville Library contains various forms of information that pertain to Nashville’s involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. During the 1950s-1960s, Nashville’s Civil Rights Movement was in constant flow, from desegregating public schools to lunch counter sit-ins. This collection is an assembly of materials composed of primary sources and first-hand experiences, detailing the situations that were occurring during the Civil Rights Movement in Nashville. Visitors can sit at the symbolic lunch counter and read the Ten Rules of Conduct carried by the protesters during the sit-ins and examine the timeline of local and national events. Black and white photographs surround the room, illuminating dramatic events in this period of Nashville history, including parents leading their first-grade children past angry protesters, a bombing meant to intimidate those who were challenging segregation, and a peaceful confrontation between Mayor Ben West and African-American student leaders.

Marathon Village is a neighborhood born out of the buildings that once housed Marathon Motor Works (19101914). On the first-floor there is a retail experience like no other that includes flagship stores from the History Channels’ American Pickers to legendary whiskey makers, Jack Daniels. In addition to shopping, we can visit the Marathon Motor Works museum showcasing five of the remaining eight Marathon vehicles located in the original MMW showroom.

After the hour presentation and tour of the room, we will lunch at Provence Bread and Café onsite at the Library an enjoy artisan soups, salads and/or sandwiches. Please note that only 12 people can sign up for this trip.

Patsy Cline Museum Monday, February 19 - 9:30 am - $20.00 + Lunch ‘Though she left the world tragically at the age of 30 in 1963, Patsy Cline made an indelible mark on Country Music and remains one of the biggest names in Country history. The Patsy Cline Museum celebrates the life of the legendary songstress and features hundreds of never before seen artifacts, personal belongings, videos and much more.’ (from website) The tour lasts approximately 1 hour. After the tour, we’ll ‘beam’ down to The Flyer Saucer, which offers a variety of choices from salads to pizza and burgers to brats. Note that they are also a Draught Emporium” and have a wide selection of beers. In order to receive a group discount on this trip, we must have at least 15 people sign up. After February 12, no refunds will be given.

Lyft Lunch and Learn March 1

Reiki & Qigong Reiki (ray key) and Qigong (chee gong) harmonize, balance and cultivate life energy, called, Qi, or Ki, for health and well-being. Reiki is a type of hands-on healing developed in Japan. Qigong comes from the same ancient roots as Tai Chi, though it is a healing art rather than a martial art from Traditional Chinese Medicine. When used as part of a regular fitness routine, it could be called "moving meditation". We offer a weekly Qigong practice on Fridays from 11am to noon, taught by certified Medical Qigong Therapist and Reiki Master Cyndi Clark. Afterwards she offers energy healing treatments by appointment for $25. Call the center to make an appointment for a healing session. Practicing Qigong regularly improves many physical and mental processes. It can help you reduce stress, recover more quickly and naturally from illnesses or surgeries, and develop better balance, agility, focus and flexibility. In fact, Qigong has been shown to reduce the fear of falling in aging populations, and it improves sleep, digestion, blood pressure and more. Come check out this class. They look forward to meeting you!
