When Was the Last Time You Tried Something for the First Time?

February is Celebration of Culture Month at FiftyForward Madison! We are taking you on an adventure in 2014 to try some new things for the first time. Please direct your attention to the insert for all the adventurous cultural experiences that are available to you this month.

Music & Stories with JJ Kent - Saturday, February 1 Come Saturday, February 1 at 1:30 p.m. and be mesmerized by Native American flutist and storyteller, JJ Kent. This FREE performance is the first in our Celebration of Culture series events this month. Park Place Retirement Community will be providing their yummy, fresh baked cookies and coffee will also be on hand.

Chinese New Year Celebration - Tuesday, February 4 Witness the beauty of traditional Chinese dance and music as members of the Chinese Arts Alliance of Nashville use dance theater to tell the story of the Lost Horse, an ancient Chinese fable. Afterwards, enjoy Chinese dishes provided by Hibachi Grill of Madison. This FREE event takes place on Tuesday, February 4 at 4:30 p.m. Please sign up at the front desk.

Eat Smart, Live Strong with Sandy and Sam - Wednesday, February 5 Ringing in the New Year by setting health goals? Sandy Wray and Sam are here to help. They have been facilitating FREE sessions which are designed to help older adults improve their health and overall well-being through eating right and exercising. The last session is Wednesday February 5 at 1:30. Even if this will be your first session, this USDA certified curriculum will still help give you step by step tools to reach your eating and exercising goals.

Love Songs for My Valentine - Friday, February 14 Music for Seniors will be right here at Madison in February! Eleganza Strings, a harp and violinist duo, is giving a FREE one-hour concert Friday, February 14 at 1:00 pm.

Tasty Tuesday - Tuesday, February 18 Tasty Tuesday CafĂŠ welcomes the return of Storyteller Tasneem Tewogbola in celebration of Black History Month. She will be sharing African folktales as we partake of fried chicken, red beans and rice, coleslaw, roll, tea and dessert. $5 buys you the ticket for Tuesday, February 18 at 11:30 am. Please purchase your ticket at the front desk by Friday, February 14.

Girls Night In - Tuesday, February 25 You are invited to stay in with the girls on Tuesday, February 25 from 5 - 7 p.m. First, we eat delicious Olive Garden soup, salad, and breadsticks. Then make your own sugar or salt scrub perfect for exfoliating skin and leaving it moisturized and renewed. Tickets are $8 and may be purchased through Friday, February 21.

Tax Appts.

We are accepting tax appointments for the 2014 tax season. AARP tax preparation volunteers will be here every Wednesday from February 5th until April 9th to help prepare your 2013 taxes. These are free services so make sure to get your appointment.

Suggestion Box We have a new suggestion box setup! Visit the area between the hall calendar and the Community Events bulletin board to check it out. Your suggestions with our answers will now be displayed on the cork board beside the suggestion box and suggestion forms on the wall.

Oasis Seminar The next quarterly meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 18 at 1:00.

Bob Ross Oil Painting Class– $20 for a completed oil painting on canvas! Taught by certified instructor Liz Farar. The class will be on Monday, February 24 at 9 a.m. Please sign up and pay at the front desk by Wednesday, February 19.

Yoga Stretch will move your whole body through a series of seated and standing yoga poses. *Crochet for Beginners– Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. Led by Paulette Spalding. Bring an “H” needle and yarn and Paulette will be happy to show you the basics of crochet. *Reader’s Theater- Calling all Actors! Scripts are in. *NEW* Film Club– Join the Film Club on the first, third and fourth Fridays for a movie and popcorn at 1:30 p.m. First, join us for Flower Drum Song, the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical about Chinese immigrants coming to America. On the 21st, cheer for hockey team USA at the 1980 Olympics in Miracle. Finally, on the 28th, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? *NEW* Still Searching – This reading and discussion group meets on the fourth Friday of every month at 10:30 a.m.

The focus of the group will be to read books on spiritual direction and follow up with discussion during meetings. Facilitated by Carol Roberts and Cornelia Laux.

Wisdom Writers Club- Meets first and third Fridays at 10 a.m. Join others in Life Story Writing. Facilitated by Carol Roberts.

Diabetes Club- Meets 1st Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Sponsored by Hickory Gardens. Next meeting is February 6 at 1:30 p.m. Includes healthy snacks and a quarterly giveaway! Must be present to register for the giveaway.

Book Club– In February , join the Book Club on the 4th Wednesday of the month for the “book in a bag” selection, The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan. Come see Sam or Del to borrow your book. Facilitated by Del Dorr.

Bible Conversation– Led by Story Church, Bible Conversation will meet every Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Red Hat Society– Meets 2nd Monday of each month at 10:30 a.m. $15 yearly dues. Join these ladies for lunch in red and purple gear! Linda Kent, Queen. Monday, February 10 the ladies will eat at Hibachi.

Quilting Club– Mondays at its new time of 11-2 p.m. Bring your materials and quilt away! Led by Carole Petty.

Inglewood & Friends– Meets 3rd Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. Plans monthly trips.

Reminisce– Meets 1st Tuesday at 1 p.m. Go back in time with Nancy McDougal. Door prizes!

Open Music Jam– Every Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in Classroom #2.

Madison Travelers– Meets 1st Wednesday of each month at 12 p.m. Plans monthly trips for evenings and weekends.

Crochet Club– Every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. All crocheters welcome! Fun and fellowship! Instruction provided if needed.

Mexican Train Dominoes– 12:30 p.m. every Wednesday. Come learn how to play this fun game. Bring a set of dominoes if you have them.

Silver Notes Band– Wednesday at 2 p.m. 16-piece plus big band that performs all over Nashville! Kim Yearwood, Band Leader. Did you play an instrument in high school? Come join us!

Genealogy Club– Meets 1st Thursday at 10 a.m. Want to research your family history? This is the group for you.

Karaoke Club– Meets 2nd Thursday of each month at 12:30 p.m. led by “D. J. Dottie” Dillard. Come sing your favorite song or just listen. Door prizes! February 13.

Knitting Club– Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. Don’t know how? Someone will show you! Just bring your knitting needles and some yarn.

Golden Tones Choir– Led by Geno Haffner. Fridays at 12:30 p.m. Seeking those who love to sing.

Friday Night Music Jam—Every Friday from 6-9 p.m. Free, but they do pass the hat for donations. All acoustic music welcome. Bring your instrument and sign up to play!

Bunco- Come join us to play Bunco on the third Monday of every month at 1:30 p.m. We need at least 4 to play. This easy dice game is tons of fun. Free prizes for those who win the most and Bunco.

*NEW! Grief Support GroupEvery third Monday at 10 a.m. we offer a free support group for those dealing with the stages of grief. Meet with others who are journeying through the same processes in a safe and confidential environment. Facilitated by Adam Waltenbaugh, Masters in Counseling, Vanderbilt University.

Depression and Bipolar Support GroupIf you suffer from Depression, Bipolar Disorder, other mood and emotional disorders or are a caregiver for those who suffer, join the DBSA group on the first and third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Center. Facilitated by Annie Lauri of the DBSA Madison Chapter.

Metro Nutrition ProgramLunch for seniors over 60. Must apply with Metro first. Mon-Fri, 11:30 am. 48 hour reservation required. Also serving Meals on Wheels. Contact Felicia Whitaker at 860-7180. Donations requested.

Medicare CounselingKay Sanders, a member of our Center, is certified in helping with any questions and concerns you may have about your Medicare plan. She will have appointments the third Tuesday of every month at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Please sign up at the front desk.

Technology On Demand: Private Computer TutoringTaught by Don Smartt. Private sessions are 90 minutes each. Topics available include Microsoft Word, Excel Basics, Internet Basics, and Email/Social Networking. Tuesdays, 1:30-3:00 p.m. or Wednesdays 10:00-11:30 a.m. Cost is $30 per session. Personal TrainerMichael Neel is a Certified Personal Trainer. He will be available to work with you on Mondays from 4:30-7:00 p.m. He will be happy to show you how to safely and effectively use the fitness equipment in the Fitness Center. Chaffin's Barn's Driving Miss Daisy *Trip full. Add your name to the waiting list.* In celebration of Black History Month, Chaffin's Barn is putting on the play Driving Miss Daisy. Driving Miss Daisy is a 1987 play by Alfred Uhry about the relationship of an elderly Southern woman, Daisy Werthan, and her AfricanAmerican chauffeur, Hoke Colburn, from 1948 to 1973. You have the option of bringing your lunch with you or the van will make a stop at Whitt's BBQ on the way there.

Thursday, February 6 - 10:30 a.m. $24 + Lunch Valentine's Murder Mystery Excursion Train Treat your Valentine to this exciting trip! Enjoy a ride on a restored classic 1950's era passenger train. Discover who is the best Sherlock Holmes whilst taking in a murder mystery play performed right in your car during the trip to and from Watertown. During your layover in Watertown, shop the stores and have lunch wherever your heart desires on the Public Square.

Saturday, February 8 - 8:00 a.m. $36 + Lunch Inglewood to Depot Bar and Grill and Shopping Hop on down to Springfield, TN to visit the Depot Bar and Grill. The Owner of 35 years, Doug Voise, brings a variety of food concepts, from fast food to fine dining, to the menu he creates. But he is sure to include the traditional favorites as well. Afterwards, look through the local "junk" shops to discover some hidden treasures.

Tuesday, February 11 - 10:30 a.m. $5 + Lunch Cultural Celebration Cafe Tour Come with Sam to experience a smattering of tastes from around the world as part of our Celebration of Culture month!

The Cafe edition will visit one restaurant each Wednesday for three consecutive weeks. On the 12th come away to a quaint French cafe: Provence Breads & Cafe and partake of your choice of breakfast or lunch. The 19th will find you at Gojo Ethiopian Cafe sampling as few or as many dishes as you would like from their buffet. To round out the tour, experience Bosnian and other European dishes at Cafe Bosna on the 26th. The $10 cost covers all three trips. These trips cannot be signed up for individually.

Wednesday, February, 12, 19 and 26 - 10:30 a.m. $10 + Lunch Music and Art: Senior Monday at The Frist Start The Frist's Senior Monday off right by filling your bellies with the good grub from The Frist's cafeteria. You will receive a 15% discount today! At 12:30 take in Snappy Pappy's smooth sounds of the 40s, 50s and 60s. Finish up with a docent-guided tour at 1:30 of the new exhibit Looking East: Western Artists and the Allure of Japan. This exhibit looks at the works of Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and the furniture of Frank Lloyd Wright as well as the Japanese paintings and decorative arts which influenced the afore mentioned artists and some of the greatest pieces in American and European art history.

Monday, February 17 - 11:00 a.m. $9 + Lunch Madison Travelers to visit Kathleen at the Brand New BraiZ Bistro *Trip full. Add your name to the waiting list.* Visit Kathleen as the Bartender at the brand new BraiZ Bistro at Providence shopping center in Mt. Juliet! BraiZ is a locally-owned, independent establishment with an emphasis on scratch made, ever evolving funky-fresh food, local craft brew and exemplary customer service. Swing by the front desk for a print out of their meal offerings. Then take in some shopping at the surrounding Providence shops.

Saturday, February 22 - 10:30a.m. $5 + Lunch Portland, TN - Tractor Museum and Wine Tasting Commence your Portland, TN adventure by touring Days Gone By, an antique complex housing an extensive collection of steam engines, antique trucks, tractors, and more. Head to Occasions/5 Chefs for lunch and to browse their charming shelves. Conclude your journey at Sumner Crest Winery for a tour of their facility and a tasting of their wine offerings, some of which include winners of the 2004 and 2005 Wines of the South competition.

February Announcements Vote For John Young for Conductor of Year!

Our own John Young, president of the Advisory Council, is running for the Whistlestop Conductor of the Year! The “Conductor of the Year,” is a mock-election that benefits the programs and services of our center, FiftyForward Madison Station. This historic race involves volunteer community leaders and asks them to collect the most dollars, or “votes.” One Dollar=One Vote. The candidate to receive the most “votes” will be named the “Conductor of the Year” at the Whistlestop Fundraiser on March 13, 2014. John’s opponents are community leaders Nathan Massey, representing the Madison-Rivergate Area Chamber of Commerce and Gracie Porter, representing the Kiwanis Club of Madison. You can help John win by dropping your “vote” in the bucket on the front counter. Good luck, John!

New Computer Navigation Classes New member Eddie Gordon - certified in Microcomputer Information Systems - will be teaching two new classes on Fridays. For those desiring a very basic beginners course, sign up for the 9:00 - 9:30 class. If you want to learn your way around programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. sign up for the 9:30 - 10:00 class. Please sign up at the front desk for these FREE classes.

February Seminars Join us for “How Will I Pay for Home Care, Assisted Living or a Nursing Home for Myself or a Loved One?” This seminar will be on Thursday, February 6 at 1:30 and is given by FiftyForward board member and Elder Law lawyer, Barbara Moss. On Thursday, February 20 come learn about the Affordable Health Care Act and how to enroll with “Get Covered Nashville” at 1:30 p.m.

Senior Brain Games Are you a know it all? Interested in trivia? Or just want to meet some new people? Find out more about Senior Brain Games, a Club who will train together to represent Madison in a team trivia competition, on Monday, February 10 at 1:30 p.m.

World Religions Discussion with Del Dorr Join Del to discuss all your impressions and the amazing things you’ve learned about world religions in this final discussion of the World Religion Seminars and Trips. The discussion will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 17.

New Beginner’s Leather Working Class Try something new! Kenneth Gutermuth of Old Man’s Leather Work will be teaching a new class on Wednesdays beginning February 19 at 2:00 p.m. Try your hand at some leather working, you don’t have to be experienced in the least! There are examples on the front desk of the kinds of things that you can learn to make in this class. It’s only $5 for the class which also includes your supplies.

Where are we located?

FiftyForward Madison Station’s address is 301 Madison Street. However, we are physically located at the end of Douglas Street. There is a sign in the driveway that says “FiftyForward Madison Station.”

Parking and entrance are in the back.

Visitor Fees at Madison Station Please remember that after one free visit, non-members will be required to pay $5 per day when attending the center. However, non-members may purchase tickets to events that are deemed “community/outreach events” at no additional cost (to be determined by the Center Director.) We encourage everyone to fill out their 2014 membership application in order to avoid this fee.

Open Art Studio Volunteers Madison would like to have open hours for our new Art Studio for those who would like to come in and paint, craft or do other artsy things. We are currently recruiting volunteers who would be willing to take a shift in the Art Studio so that those coming in to use it will have someone on hand to show them where supplies are or answer a question. If you are interested in being a volunteer for the Open Art Studio please come see Sam.
