Coming up… Submitted by GG/Gayle Goad

Since I have lived in a retirement community for 12 years, I know of three incidents where a resident has been incapacitated and helpless for days. This should not be allowed to happen and can be easily prevented. Close your eyes for a moment and use your imagination. You are lying on the floor injured or unconscious. Maybe you are on a cold hard floor. If you are lucky, maybe on a carpet. If you are not unconscious, you are aware of being cold, hungry, thirsty, needing to go to the bathroom and ALONE. You wonder IF and WHEN someone will come to help. I don’t want that to be me and I’m sure you don’t want it to be you. What steps can we do to be sure that doesn’t happen to us? You need a person or preferably two persons who know your schedule and check in on you at least once a day or better yet twice a day. It can be very simple and quick, a phone call or a text if you have that capability. I am sending a picture of a heart to my four kids each day when I get up. Hopefully one of them will notice if I don’t send it and check on me. They also have a list of 4 neighbors and their phone numbers that they can call and ask to check on me. I have a neighbor who has a key to my house and the phone numbers of my children. If you have a SMART phone, there is a FREE app called SNUG SAFETY that you check in with at a time you decide on each day. If you don’t check in, they send you a text and ask if you are OK. If they don’t get a response, they contact the person or persons you have listed as your emergency contacts. It is quick and easy and it works. This should take care of problems at home but what happens if you are in an accident and unable to communicate? That is where the TDOT program comes in. I strongly recommend it to everyone, not just seniors. It is easy and simple and could save your life. Take responsibility for you safety! Gayle Goad will be attending our First Monday Lunch in May to talk more about the SNUG Safety app and TDOT program.
