It’s a new year, a new beginning...welcome to 2019 and a special welcome back to all our members! We look forward to you jumping into your routines or creating a new one, as the case may be, with an array of our fun and interesting offerings!

“Tech Day ” Monday, January 7th and 14th Time: 9:30—11:30 | FEE: Free by appointment This is a great opportunity for you to bring out those new devices you got during the Holidays and finally get some questions answered! IF you have a phone, computer, iPad etc. pack it up and bring those questions because we have people to help!

“HEALTHY EATING W/ TROY Tuesday, January 22nd Time: 10:45 | Fee: Free What better way to kick off the new year with healthy eating tips and new recipes!!

A Cosmic Journey—Solar System Series Thursdays, January 10th—February 28th Time: 10:45 | Fee: Free This is an 8 week educational series that will run until the end of February!!! If you enjoy an educational class, have always been interested in the solar system or simply want to take part in this class make sure to sign up!

Established in 1956, FiftyForward supports, champions and enhances for those 50 and older.

Kim’s Korner Happy 2019 to all of you! It is my hope that this year will be an amazing year for each and every one of you. We now have another chance to work on bettering ourselves, we sure do hope the Knowles Center is a big part of your life again this year to make that happen. It is our desire to make 2019 fun and memorable for you. We will have many exciting activities planned this year...travel with us to make this the best year yet at the Knowles Center!

Common Oral Conditions Affecting Seniors Some of the most common conditions affecting mature adults include: dry mouth, root cavities, fungal infections at the corner of the mouth, difficulty swallowing and oral cancer. Dry mouth can affect up to 30% of those age 65 and older and is often caused by medication use. This condition often leads to other oral problems such as cavities.

Drinking water more frequently is helpful as well as chewing sugarless gum. Root caries (cavities on the root surface) can be common due to changes in the oral cavity such as natural wear on the teeth and recession of gum tissue. Seniors are at risk for developing caries in these vulnerable areas. Angular cheilitis is an oral fungal infection that can occur in the corners of the lips. This area can allow saliva to collect and lead to a fungus infection. Often an antifungal ointment can be applied to the cracked angles of the lips.

Research reveals that 15% of the senior population can be at risk for swallowing issues. Symptoms include painful swallowing, food getting caught in the throat, drooling and frequent heartburn. If left untreated, mature adults can become malnourished, dehydrated or develop respiratory problems. Oral cancer can be seen in seniors and some studies show that oral cancer diagnosis can increase with age. Oral cancer screenings should be performed regular by a dental professional and even you can perform a self-oral cancer screening at home.

With many adults living longer and keeping their natural teeth, it is imperative to have regular dental care.

Overall health is greatly impacted by our oral health. Make sure to visit your oral health care provider on a regular schedule.

Reghan’s Remarks Happy 2019 everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year! I am glad to be back here with the FiftyForward Knowles Family and I cannot wait to see what all 2019 has in store for our Center! Please make sure to check out your January Calendar for day to day programs and notice that there is NO programming on Friday this month. Keep in mind our weather policy so you are aware of if the Centers are closed.

I am looking to start an Ambassador’s Program here at the Knowles Center this year so if you are interested in what this Program consist of please come see me! I will also post flyers and a blurb in next month’s newsletter with more details!

This is going to be a great year! Thank you for all you do to make the FiftyForward Knowles Center what it is! I look forward to making many more memories with all of you in this New Year!

Membership fees to increase January 1— members can participate in all seven centers!

Effective January 2019, Fifty Forward center membership fees will increase to $12*a month. Our centers offer lifelong learning and engaging programs (Arts, exercise and education) and access to resources to live true to the FiftyForward mission: to support, champion and enhance life for those 50 and older.

Five of the seven FiftyForward lifelong learning centers are among the elite 1% of centers in the United States, recognized by the National Institute of Senior Centers, for quality and effectiveness.

As a nonprofit agency, we rely on proceeds for annual membership and program fees, special events, local government grants and funders, active volunteers and other thoughtful and generous community Supporters to provide engagement opportunities for older adults.

FiftyForward has not raised membership rates in eight years. This increase will offset the costs we are seeing to maintain our lifelong learning centers and programs.

For $12 month, you can participate in ALL seven FiftyForward Centers. ¡
