FiftyForward Celebrates Pride Month June brings warm summertime weather and a special chance to celebrate and recognize our neighbors especially those in the LGBTQ+ community. FiftyForward is excited to participate in this year’s Nashville Pride Festival on Saturday, June 25, 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. and Sunday, June 26, 11 a.m. -7 p.m. at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park in downtown Nashville. Look for our booth there. We will also have a presence in the parade which begins Saturday, June 25, 10 a.m. at the intersection of 8th Ave. and Broadway. Be sure to wave when you see us. And, for the first time, we are hosting a special FiftyForward Pride Party on Saturday, June 25, 1:30-3:30 p.m. at our FiftyForward Knowles Center. Join us for food, fun, and games to celebrate Nashville Pride and the older adults in the LGBTQ+ community.

In addition, we are proud to be part of the next edition of Nashville Public Television’s Aging Matters series. “Aging with Pride” premieres on June 20. Later in June, our Squeeze the Day podcast will feature an interview with Donelson Cafe and Catering’s Mark Edward Dickerson. Donelson Cafe is located at our FiftyForward Donelson Station. Mark and Chef Kevin (Miehlke) have spent nearly 40 years of their lives together and are so heartled in many of their decisions to lift up and support the community. FiftyForward sees and celebrates the differences in every person. Together we are creating a responsive community that is open, engaged, and accepting of all. Join us for events throughout the summer. We look forward to seeing YOU soon! Photo courtesy: The Tennessean

Important Center Information

FiftyForward is partnering with the Metro Nashville Public Health Department to provide free, no-appointment COVID testing and vaccination clinics. You can visit one of our three FiftyForward host sites: FiftyForward Donelson Station, Knowles, and Madison Station. We are very excited about this partnership as FiftyForward is committed to being part of the effort to keep our community safe and to offering easy access to COVID vaccination and testing. It is important to be up to date with COVID vaccination. Being up to date means that a person has received all doses in their primary vaccine series and at least one booster dose. Second boosters are also available to those 50 and older or those who are immunocompromised. Learn more below.

The Importance of COVID-19 boosters The best way to prevent experiencing serious COVID-19 illness is to be fully vaccinated and up-to-date with your COVID-19 vaccinations. In Tennessee, only 21% of individuals have received a booster dose of the COVID vaccine. Science shows us that boosters are essential to provide the best protection from serious COVID illness. During the recent Omicron surge, individuals who were boosted were 21 times less likely to die and 7 times less likely to be hospitalized compared to those who were unvaccinated. Older adults and immunocompromised individuals experience the most serious complications from COVID. The CDC now recommends an additional booster for certain individuals. Read more about that by clicking HERE. We care about you and encourage you to take advantage of the free and widely available COVID-19 boosters to keep yourself, your loved ones and our community as safe as possible from COVID-19 illness. Find more information here from the CDC about the importance of being fully vaccinated and staying up-to-date on your COVID-19 vaccination: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/stay-up-to-date.html

As of this time, masks remain optional at FiftyForward locations. Everyone who chooses to wear a mask will be supported completely. We continue to pay close attention to guidance from government and health officials, and our mask policy may change again in the future if the situation with COVID-19 transmission in our community changes. Please speak with staff if you have any questions about our mask policy.

FiftyForward Happenings Squeeze the Day Podcast In our newest Squeeze the Day podcast, motherdaughter duo Darline and Feyline Lewis share the challenges of youth caregiving and the strides they are making in Nashville and across the globe. Darline Lewis built a career bringing life into the world as a labor and delivery nurse at Memorial Hospital. Forced to retire early due to a botched medical procedure, life has now come full circle as the daughter she welcomed into the world years ago has stepped in to help her. The aha moments for these two are eye-opening as more children are becoming youth caregivers for older family members. Despite life’s ups and downs, this inspirational interview is full of gratitude. Give this podcast a listen and it will warm your heart and illuminate how far we have to go with respect to youth caregivers and housing in our community. Feylyn’s comparison with the U.K. is enlightening. Give it a listen here: fiftyforward.org/podcast/

Volunteer News Vera Coleman Recognized with Strobel Award! FiftyForward is thrilled to announce that All of Us Peer Ambassador and FiftyForward Bordeaux member Vera Coleman was recently awarded the Mary Catherine Strobel Direct Service Older Adult Volunteer Award. The Strobel Awards are hosted annually by Hands-On Nashville to recognize our city’s most dedicated volunteers. Vera certainly leads the way in this category as she has used her professional experience as a medical researcher to inform her volunteer work as a Peer Ambassador, educating the community about the importance of participation in medical research. "It is/was a humbling experience to have been considered for the Mary Catherine Strobel Award, not to mention being a finalist, and subsequently the winner for the Direct Service Older Adult Volunteer Award. I'm still in awe of the experience. My gratitude to FiftyForward, and to the Director of the FiftyForward All of Us Research Program, Kelsey Mahaffey. Becoming a Peer Ambassador of this research program has certainly added a new dimension to my life. I am afforded the opportunity to raise the awareness of the All of Us Research Program, to inform potential participant/partners of the benefits, and hopefully facilitate enrollment into the program, which is our ultimate goal. It has become a passion for me, in that, we would all like to be beneficiaries of quality health care," said Vera. To learn more about Vera’s life story listen to FiftyForward’s Squeeze the Day podcast found HERE. Thank you to Vera and all of the older adult volunteers who use their lifetime of experience to serve their community.

AmeriCorps at FiftyForward FiftyForward is excited to announce that this fall we will welcome two AmeriCorps members to our team. AmeriCorps is the federal program dedicated to providing volunteers the opportunity to serve directly with nonprofit organizations to tackle our nation’s most pressing challenges. FiftyForward has been a long-time grantee through the AmeriCorps Seniors program which supports our Foster Grandparent and RSVP volunteers, and we are excited to broaden our partnership with AmeriCorps. One of FiftyForward’s AmeriCorps positions will be based at the Patricia Hart Building and will provide support to our Adult Day Services (ADS) and FiftyForward Fresh programs. The second position will be based at FiftyForward Bordeaux and will provide support to our lifelong learning centers by broadening our health, wellness, and nutrition programming. We encourage center members to share these opportunities with family and friends who might be interested in a year of service. AmeriCorps members are provided with a $20,000 stipend for a year of service. Additional benefits include health insurance, an education benefit, and a variety of training and professional development opportunities. And it is important to know that AmeriCorps members can be any age! Center members who are interested in learning more about applying for an AmeriCorps position at FiftyForward or other area nonprofit organizations in the Nashville area are encouraged to check out the offerings here: https://www.hon.org/americorps22-23
