A “Reverse” FiftyForward First The members and staff of FiftyForward have embraced the idea of the FiftyForward First and challenged themselves to try new experiences.

Sometimes the younger generation can learn from its elders. In this case, FiftyForward Madison Station program director, Sam Garlock, enlisted the expertise of frequent bus rider, member Del Dorr, who gave her a lesson on how to navigate the Nashville bus system. This just goes to show you that one is never too old, or in this case, too young, to learn something new.

Recently FiftyForward FLIP Director Sandra Thomas completed her FiftyForward First. Sandra learned to make her first quilt block from Edna Dougherty who teaches lapidary classes at FiftyForward Donelson Station and quilting at Joann’s. Last month she attended the opening of a quilting exhibit, Sistahs of the Cloth, at the Vanderbilt University Bishop Johnson Cultural Center and recently was asked to join the Zuri Quilting group. She was just beaming as she described meeting the women in this group and how eager they were to have her join them.

Last month, FiftyForward Madison Station challenged FiftyForward Donelson Station to a softball game. For some members it was their first time at bat! Even though Donelson bested Madison 12-7, the centers are calling for a rematch because it was so much fun!

Music and family pull the heartstrings for Amy Grant

By Susan W. Sizemore FiftyForward Communications Director You hear “Baby, Baby” or “Tennessee Christmas” and you know ... it’s Amy Grant, so familiar, so loved, our hometown girl. She put Contemporary Christian Music on the map: the first CCM artist to have a platinum record, the first to hit No. 1 on the Pop charts and the first to perform at the GRAMMY® Awards. At home in Nashville, she’s nearly as well known for her community support as for her music. As her life unfolds, she’s turning her own concerns outward and is advocating for older adults and families making tough decisions about caregiving. And she’s found that, more than ever, music is the key to connecting across generations, even unlocking doors that may seem closed for good.

Amy has the gift of making even a stranger feel like an old friend. Our paths had crossed a time or two when I worked in the entertainment business, but this was our first-ever chat over coffee. Minor detail: she was in Franklin and I was in Mount Juliet, but it didn’t matter--we saw eye-to-eye on many things as we talked about life “fifty-forward” and found plenty of common ground in the stories we shared. So grab a cup, wherever you are, and join us.

SS: First, let’s talk about your new friends, the FiftyForward Martin Center Card Crusaders. These ladies have a social business making handcrafted greeting cards--and we know they’re a lot of fun. How did you meet them?

AG: Marilyn [Nevens} had written me a letter and had included a couple of cards. As a woman in middle age hearing from somebody who was so vibrant and several years older than me ... I was just inspired and wanted to meet her. Her handwriting is lovely; it reminded me of my mother’s. I called her and she was just so great, so enthusiastic — she’s a pistol! Then, when I went and did cards, it just felt so familiar to me. I’m from a family of all women. I have three older sisters and both grandmothers were widowed before I was born. So at family dinners or anything that was a bigger gathering, it was always my dad and all of these women ... So, to me, [being with the Card Crusaders] was just really familiar ... the sound of women working and talking is really comforting.

I remember … They invited me to stay for lunch after our card making and I had not brought a lunch. And, they all bring their own lunches … so, we pulled the tables together and all sat together and several of them passed me things from their lunch. One woman had a new flavor of potato chip, I think it was Biscuits and Gravy and she said, “Do you think this tastes like Biscuits and Gravy?” And then the potato chip bag went all the way around the table.

At this point in my life, I’m 55, I just feel like I process pressure and anxiety so differently now than I did in when I was younger. I just gave it too much free rent in my head and in my heart. I don’t even know why.

I have buried enough friends. Sometimes I say out loud, “I am not going to let anxiety about anything rob of me of living today.” This worrying does not change anything.

We have got to get out of our heads because our heads are full of chatter. I feel like those women, who are joyful, have learned the secret of not listening to that chatter in their heads.

Another thing I do … I try to do this every day but I don’t necessarily do it … is to lay flat out on my face on the ground — with arms spread out above my head — flat out and say, “God, I am yielded and loved.” Just let me live yielded and loved.” As adults we talk about inner balance, we can discuss it and theorize about it, but a 5-year-old learns inner balance the first time they ride a bike. She says in a childlike voice, “I got it … I get it.”

This morning, as I was lacing up my mother’s denim Keds (yep, she’s a hipster) it occurred to me that I had done this very thing for a 12-year-old just five minutes ago, except they weren’t denim Keds, they were track spikes, and it wasn’t five minutes ago, it was yesterday. And while she is my real mother, he isn’t my real kid, because I don’t have any, unless you count the 125 members of the Hyde Middle School track team, which I do. You see, I am two things I never thought I’d be: a middle-aged single gal living with her mother, and a middle school track coach who once hated running. Both things are adventures: unplanned, unsought, but utterly rewarding and deeply satisfying. And sometimes a pain in the rear.

Me, that is. Mom and the middle schoolers may find me cranky when I feel like I have better things to do, like take a drive to the beach by myself or write the Great American Novel, which I had plenty of chances to do before Mom needed me or before Hyde Middle School needed a track coach. (Still could. Any day. Also, I’m too lazy to write the Great American Novel, or even a Pretty Good Canadian one.) All in all, though, after 10 years of what some might consider my life’s “disruption,” I’m not a bit cranky. I’m grateful. I’m awed, sometimes.

I’m on the brink of tears, even, when I realize that if it weren’t for Dad’s cancer in 2006, I’d still be in Nashville making semi-regular phone calls to the folks and flying out west just for Christmas and summer visits, not spending days laughing — and sometimes fussing — with my mom, in ways we rarely did when I was younger. She’s my friend now, my dear companion, my pal. All because my brother and I promised Dad, yes, we’ll take care of Mom, don’t you worry. And so we’re here, moved back home, back into our old rooms. (Free, in-home eldercare from the single, childless AARP-carded offspring, but no grandkids. Can’t have everything.) Just before Dad died, I remember him sitting on the edge of his hospital bed getting ready for one of his last home visits. He couldn’t bend over so I knelt down and tied his brown leather shoes, and like many a grown-up kid who’s done this very thing, my heart mashed and my eyes stung and I thought of all the times he’d tied my shoes, back when I marveled at his gentle hands and how swiftly he made those little bunny ears, then untied them and showed me, slowly, how to do it myself. I think of that moment sometimes when I notice a pudgy little sixth-grader trying to run the mile with his shoelaces flapping in the wind. “Double-tie! Double tie!” I yell it at every start line, but in every race I’ll see at least two kids with shoestrings a-flutter, inviting danger with every step. And so I call them over, and I sit on the field, and I help. It’s the closest thing to mothering that I do, maybe.

That, and hugging a sweaty, sobbing pre-teen girl when she comes in last at league finals. They may not be my very own, but I get to step in and give that kind of love--the kind my parents gave me, the kind I get to give back to my own mother when she needs me. (Turns out I still need her, too.) What’s better, the giving or the receiving? What’s easier, being the parent or the child? It’s all hard, it’s all rich, it’s all there, every day, a blessing, a trial, a choice. It’s all love. Can’t pick one or the other. I guess we’ll call it a tie.

FiftyForward Supportive Care Services

Expect fun with others and a caring staff at Adult Day Services FiftyForward Adult Day Services (ADS) is the place to be. The older adult participants are always on the move and laughter is heard from every corner of the spacious room where they gather Monday through Friday.

Older adults make new friends, eat well, exercise and receive support and encouragement from one another and the staff and volunteers who care about them. For 47 years, countless elders and their families have enriched their lives by participating in FiftyForward Adult Day Services.

The program has the distinction of being the first day program for Tennessee elders and is one of the first in the country.

What makes it a great place to be?

Here are a few things you can expect from Adult Day Services (ADS): •

About 90% of the participants are picked up at their front door by a kind driver -- what a great way to start the day.

•

Breakfast is served upon arrival, a nutritious way to fuel a full day of activities.

•

Lively discussions often occur about anything and everything – politics, which team will win the Super Bowl or World Series, or cats versus dogs.

•

Music pulses through the space and participants – where else can you hear Flashlight by Parliament, At Last by Etta James and Wake Up Little Susie by the Everly Brothers and see everyone clapping, singing and dancing?

•

Fun projects and games are played every day – bowling, bingo, trivia, crafting, movies and trips.

•

If someone is missing, everyone notices; if someone is new, everyone welcomes them. If someone is celebrating, everyone joins the party. If someone is down in the dumps, everyone encourages and coaxes a smile.

•

Volunteers and visitors abound. Whether young adults spending their summer serving others, students practicing for their future profession or talented folks who use their unique skills to entertain, assist and enrich our elders, they are fun and fantastic.

•

We help one another by noticing changes and needs. If it is shoes that you need or you are acting differently than yesterday, staff and volunteers recognize the importance of taking action to help. continued on page 21 Summer 2016 | 5

Two tutors in Davidson County honored with Flora McKean Award

Since program inception, FLIP tutors give more than 100,000 hours to tutor 8,000 children By bringing a lifetime of experience, skills and patience to the table, older adult tutors are often uniquely qualified to bring out the best in elementary age children.

For nearly four decades, Mildred Robinson has found joy helping struggling students break through learning barriers. Having served as a middle school teacher with Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) from 1973-2008, she also enjoyed working with the GED program at the Cohn Adult Learning Center.

After retirement she missed her daily interaction with students and, in 2011, Robinson became a FiftyForward Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) tutor and has since served at Cumberland and Robert E. Lilliard Elementary schools.

Robinson is representative of the dedication and effectiveness of FLIP tutors and she and Marilyn Bagford are recipients of this year’s Flora McKean Award, which was established by FLIP supporter, and current FiftyForward Board President Scott McKean in honor and memory of his aunt who valued the importance of early childhood education. Annually, two Davidson County FLIP tutors who best exemplify excellence in tutoring are presented with the Flora McKean Award.

Bagford is based out of FiftyForward Madison Station and has been a FLIP tutor at Rosebank Elementary School for 10 years.

According to FLIP Coordinator Bethanie Peadro, she is one of the most helpful and nurturing tutors in the program. “Observing Marilyn with her students is a true pleasure. You can really see the enjoyment she brings to the students,” said Peadro. In addition to serving as a FLIP tutor, Bagford is a volunteer at the Shelby Bottoms Nature Center and at FiftyForward Madison Station.

Robinson and Bagford are among the committed corps of tutors who make up FiftyForward FLIP to provide a measurable difference in the lives of elementary school students in Davidson and Williamson counties. For 23 years, the FLIP program has been matching adults age 55+ with students who need assistance in either reading or math. Over the history of the program, more 6 | Forward Focus

than 1,000 tutors have dedicated approximately 100,000 hours to assist 8,000 children.

Research demonstrates that older adults play a special role in assisting young students who need extra help to reach grade level in either math or reading. By bringing a lifetime of experience, skills and patience to the table, older adult tutors are often uniquely qualified to bring out the best in elementary age children. The FLIP program is designed to provide the training, support and guidance necessary to help those who want to work directly with children in a school setting maximize their experience.

“FLIP is a unique tutoring program in that the tutor and the student work as a pair for the year. The tutor and the student form a meaningful relationship, and each looks forward to the weekly sessions. I had some initial anxiety about my effectiveness as an elementary reading tutor. The training and support given by FLIP and the reading/learning coaches in the schools are incredible.

FLIP volunteers are a part of a strong team that works together to help students succeed. FLIP provides books, sheets, reading guides and other basic materials. Coaches with the schools are available to talk with volunteers about individual students and to guide tutors to other necessary materials. FLIP tutors collaborate within the school to share materials and ideas they have found that are effective. I encourage anyone who is 55+ years old and enjoys working with children to become a FLIP volunteer,” said veteran FLIP tutor Betsy Malone.

FLIP is currently recruiting tutors for the 2016/17 school year. Tutors are needed for schools in Davidson and Williamson counties. The Foster Grandparent Program is looking for a few good grandparents to take Nashville’s children to the next level of success.

Join RSVP for the Second Annual FiftyForward RSVP-USO 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance on FRIDAY, Sept. 9.

In honor of September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance, FiftyForward RSVP and the USO Nashville are sponsoring the 2nd Annual “Fill the Truck” event, on Friday Sept. 9, at select area Kroger stores in Davidson and Williamson counties to support men and women serving in the U.S. military. From 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., volunteers are needed to hand out donation suggestion flyers, collect donated goods (non-perishable snacks and food items) and “Fill the Truck.” Items will then be transported to the USO Centers at Nashville International Airport, Fort Campbell, and the Middle Tennessee Military Entrance Processing Station (20 Bridgestone Park.)

Special feature Agency predates Older Americans Act of 1965 providing critical services to older adults

FiftyForward marks 60 years of serving older adults in the Nashville community In May we celebrated Older American Month and as an agency that serves older adults, it is important to note that we have been doing so for more than 60 years. The longevity of FiftyForward in the Nashville community speaks to a long term vision of meeting the needs of a growing population and to honoring their value as a generation. As we move forward in our strategic planning for the next three to five years, we are harnessing the growth of technology to better meet the needs of the next generation of older adults FiftyForward takes a (boomers).

“This is really an exciting time for older adults and for FiftyForward,” said FiftyForward Executive Director Janet Jernigan. “With 10,000 Baby Boomers in the U.S. reaching the age of 65 daily, the needs for this group continue to increase exponentially. The potential for this generation to have a significant positive impact on critical issues facing our community is immense.

In fact, many ‘boomers’ may still be working and/or caring for older parents, family members or friends.

It’s imperative we continue to evaluate and enhance our programs, resources and services to continue serving this growing demographic.”

FiftyForward takes a holistic approach to serving those 50+ and offers comprehensive programs and services that, in other cities, are typically provided by 15 or more nonprofit organizations. During the last fiscal year FiftyForward served more than 20,000 individuals. Over its 60 years, the agency provided direct services to approximately one million individuals (and their families) in the community. FiftyForward has been recognized as a premier source for services, programs and resources for older adults in Middle Tennessee. Some of these programs include our care management services and volunteer opportunities.

NCOA Recognition. In 2008, FiftyForward Living at Home Care Management Program was recognized as an exceptional locally developed program model by the National Council on Aging for its effectiveness, impact, sustainability and worthiness of replication.

Living at Home participants gain access to care and resources as well as assistance with affordable housing solutions and tax relief programs.

Care Management. During Nashville’s flood of 2010, FiftyForward secured funding and mobilized services to meet basic needs and connect older flood victims with resources to improve their living conditions. The FiftyForward Care Management effort was lauded as a most impactful model by the area’s leaders in rebuilding community as it used a comprehensive approach to assess

individuals’ needs (medications, well-being) in addition to their dwelling. FiftyForward helped many residents improve their living conditions including in some instances bringing in utilities (water or air conditioning) that they had not had before the flood.

Volunteer Opportunities. From programs including FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP), and our Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) we provide purpose and meaning to older adults who volunteer throughout the community to serve diverse groups of individuals ranging from veterans and the Nashville Food Project to at-risk children. Adults, children, families, and the community at large benefit from the coordination of older adults and civic engagement. FLIP and FGP have won numerous awards for their impact.

The event is also the signature fundraising event for FiftyForward Bordeaux and proceeds benefit the center’s programs and services. Hats Off to Bordeaux! features a silent auction, catered luncheon and a lively hat fashion show featuring some of Bordeaux’s members, community leaders and volunteers as runway models.

FiftyForward Donelson Station

Strength training classes Beginners classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Exercises can be modified to those with physical limitations. Everyone has access to a chair to help with balance issues. Tuesdays are focused on the upper body (biceps, triceps, back and shoulders). Thursdays are focused on the lower body (glutes, hamstrings, calves and quadriceps). The class is only 30 minutes with 16 of those minutes being a Tabata workout or HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training).

Advanced strength training classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:15 a.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m. Tuesday is upper body, Thursday is lower body and Saturdayconcentrates on building or strengthening core muscles. This class is 36 minutes and is all Tabata (HIIT) training and all contain a cardio burst. These are intense classes not designed for beginners. We have all ages in this class from 53 – 79 years old. Both classes are FREE with your membership.

Whistlestop FiftyForward Madison Station held its 17th annual Whistlestop Dinner and Fundraiser on March 10, 2016. The event raised nearly $30,000 to help fund the many programs, services and activities offered at the center. Guests enjoyed an extensive silent auction and reception, followed by a fabulous meal caterd by dinner sponsor CRAVE 1201 Catering.

Emceed by Lelan Statom of NewsChannel 5, some highlights of the evening were the announcement of Cornelia Laux as the Senior of the Year, and State Rep. Bill Beck from the Madison Kiwanis Club as the Conductor of the Year. Other candidates in the running for Conductor this year were David McMurry of the Madison-Rivergate Area Chamber of Commerce and Darrin Hickman, representing the Madison-Goodlettsville Rotary Club. These candidates raised almost $2,000 for the center. The entertainment for the evening was performed by “Easy,” a smooth jazz quartet.

Dancing Through the Decades As FiftyForward celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, several special events have been planned. One of these events was the Dancing Through the Decades celebration, held at Grand Avenue on April 1. Members, staff and community danced to music from 1950s forward, enjoyed delicious refreshments and a vintage car display.

Attendees showed off their fanciest retro outfits and their grooviest dance moves.

Another anniversary event is being planned for this fall.

27th annual Crown Affair

27th Annual Crown Affair Community volunteers and Nashville leaders Beth Alexander, Kim Harvey Looney, Dr. Paul Teschan and Dollar General were honored at this year’s Crown Affair FiftyForward marked its 27th annual Crown Affair on April 21. As the agency’s signature fundraising event, Crown Affair raises funds to benefit the seven FiftyForward lifelong learning centers in Davidson and Williamson counties as well as agency-wide programs and services such as Care Management, Meals on Wheels and Adult Day Services. Each of these honorees was honored not only for their support of FiftyForward but for their involvement with other nonprofit organizations in the community.

Held at FiftyForward Patricia Hart Building, the event featured cocktails and silent auction followed by dinner.

What the Tech?

By Jenni Hargrove The hot topic in Nashville is our travel system—sidewalks, intersections, transit options and traffic. We’re talking about everything having to do with getting from Point A to Point B! As a result, participants in many of the FiftyForward classes have been learning all about the different travel apps available on their smartphones that can help them navigate the city’s infrastructure.

While some of the more well-known apps focus on alternatives to using traditional taxis, there are other applications that can help drivers find the route that has the least amount of traffic, assist Nashville stay-cationers in finding new spots around the city they’ve never explored, and provide small-town travelers with a simple guide to the multitude of transit options in big cities.

For Nashvillians who need a oneway ride to the airport, want to get a safe ride home after a night of barhopping, or just don’t feel like driving, Lyft and Uber are two popular, free apps that provide cheaper fares than a regular taxicab company. These apps were considered “hipster” a couple years ago, but now the two companies are competing to be the top ride service in Music City. Both services conduct background checks on its drivers before hiring, offer transportation options, and their rates fluctuate based on time of day.

From technology and language to travel and exercise, there is always something new you can use to expand your horizons.

For someone like me who lives in an outer suburb and can’t afford to use Lyft and Uber regularly, app stores also offer some great traffic apps that help you navigate the quickest route to your destination. These apps account for real-time traffic situations, the amount of stop lights along the route options, and mileage required. Some, such as the Waze app, even allow users to alert other Waze drivers about specific roadside situations, such as a police officer looking for speeders or an accident that just occurred. Other popular traffic apps include Google Maps and Beat the Traffic.

Maybe you’re on your summer vacation road trip and you’re looking for something to do to break up the hours.

Or, if you’re like me, you’re sticking around Nashville and just want to plan a weekend “staycation.” TripIt and YPlan are two of the best-rated apps for finding the attractions you’ll want to visit at each stop on your trip. Just plug in your destination, and they’ll pop out a list of places and events to check out. You can also download The Official Nashville Visitors Guide to find fun activities and attractions right here in Music City.

Another great travel app to use on vacations is Citymapper.

This one is a lifesaver if you’re traveling to a bustling city like New York or Washington, D.C. and have no idea how to navigate their overwhelming transit infrastructure. You can type in your “To” and “From” locations and receive the best travel options within seconds.

I’m constantly amazed by the power we hold in our mobile devices, and I feel like I’ll never know every feature my phone and tablet have to offer. I think you have to get halfway through life to learn those kinds of lessons. Around those women [the Card Crusaders] what they are not wasting time doing is trying to figuring everything out — it’s joyful, sharing and gratitude.

SS: One thing we get can anxious about is caring for others. My father recently passed away; he had full-time caregivers at home. You know this chapter well. What advice would you give someone?”

AG: It takes a village. That’s the most important thing. My father — because of his financial planning — he’s made it easy for us financially.

He was frugal and responsible so we have been able to have good care for him. But every person is different. We tried to put my dad in a facility that was fantastic [with lots of activities]. But with his kind of dementia he needed a place that was quiet and peaceful. Someone gave me a documentary called Alive Inside and it’s all about music and dementia and Alzheimer’s. I was so inspired [by the program] to make a playlist of songs that I remembered my father singing. I called my sisters to ask what was the music that dad played when he was younger. He was born in 1931 so I went to the 1940s and ‘50s and looked online to see what the Top 100 songs were and I made a 45-minute playlist and took my dad for a drive. And I started playing that CD and I think the first music was the theme music from Exodus, and then some ...My sisters and I Kingston Trio, and Tennessee Ernie Ford have sung church singing “Sixteen Tons.” My dad’s face just hymns (and still do) distorted in sadness and then EVERYTHING all the time with about him relaxed. my dad. SS: That sounds like a great idea for anybody who deals with memory issues — whether in the present or in the future, which may be all of us. Would you recommend that?

AG: Yes. I’m going to make a 100-song playlist for my children, because there are songs they would never know. Sometimes when I’m traveling if I’ve been away from home a long time and I’m in a different hotel room … I don’t know where the bathroom is. There are times I just miss familiarity. I miss poking around in the refrigerator at 2 a.m. if I can’t sleep. All those little habits and rituals are part of our lives. continued on page 21

Amy Grant marks 25th anniversary of Baby, Baby with a new re-release

Q. With the 25th anniversary of “Baby Baby” you brought in Tori Kelly for a wonderful, multi-generational collaboration of the rerelease of your 1991 hit. How does it make you feel to take this song to a totally new generation?

A. I’m going to have to sing praises of everyone I work with because none of this was my idea. Jennifer Cooke is my good friend and my manager and her job is to look forward and see what kind of mile marker there is. I wrote my first song 40 years ago and I feel every time I turn around there’s a mile marker of some kind. I guess Jennifer went to Bill Hearn (president of Capitol Christian Music Group, that I am signed to) ... and we had a very short list of artists who are slightly older than her and they’d grown up on my music and had mentioned it in interviews. We said wouldn’t it be fun to get someone at least 20 years younger to do this song. And then Tori, a more recent signee to the Capitol family, was such a great fit and she had no connection to the song whatsoever. It came and went before she was born. She was born in 1992, I think.

It’s great to have a remake that is different; current but still so respectful of the original. The producer [Dave Garcia] just lifted my original vocal which I thought was fantastic. Because if I sang it now, I am 25 years older then everything would be new about it.

So there was that nod to the original and it has sparked really great conversations on Facebook from people reminiscing. “I remember when I …” You want to hear something that you loved a long time ago … if you think you’re gonna enjoy something with a different twist. To me that was the sign of taking just a charming old song and giving it new wind and sails.

I feel a lot of engagement from college-age [kids] and 20-somethings because their mothers grew up with me. I’ve always had a lot of kids in the audience and I think it’s because I do the same thing with my daughter. “We’re going to see Aretha Franklin because this is who I grew up with and YOU need to know this artist. I was that way with my son with James Taylor ... I know this person is not on the radio now but this is who I cut my teeth on. I think that women tend to do that with their kids, especially if they can afford the concert tickets.

Many times I’ve met people at my concerts – especially at my Christmas concerts – and have had three generations [of the same family]. I am just starting to work on a new Christmas album this week. Every Christmas record I have ever done was a big production, but this one we are going in with a mindset that ONE person is going to be listening to this quietly in their home or in their car. Mac McAnally — whom I love and who used to work with Jimmy Buffet for years and is also a great songwriter — is going to produce that one.

So, I can’t wait to hear it.

And...neither can we, Amy! Memories and the songs of yesterday are certainly what we live for in enjoying our todays and in discovering our tomorrows.

I think at a very fragile time in life when our parents (some of them) are already kind of losing their mental equilibrium, then they are put in a place where nothing is familiar. That is the sad thing about having to move an older person out of their home even if they don’t have memory problems you are just basically wiping the slate clean. And there are no triggers in their daily life about who they are ... they are surrounded by nothing familiar.

I know that’s why my grandmothers both survived into their 80s. My oldest grandmother lived with my older sister the last three years of her life … And my other grandmother lived with my next older sister the last three years of her life. We would have done that with my father but his dementia has made it safer for him to be more contained in a smaller apartment. He did wander one night on the street … We talked about [whether] it is possible he could ever be moved back into a home but, I don’t know.

From 1867 to 1908 their successful production and sale of chairs increased each year. In 1908 they bid on a government job to design and produce seating for the offices of U.S. Senators, however, they were underbid by a furniture company that 22 | Forward Focus

within eight years bought the Ford and Johnson Company.

Ford and Johnson chairs featured diverse and creative design, consistently used fine materials, and were stocked in stores all over the United States. The company is best known for office chairs that swivel and roll with the help of cast iron hardware. Mission styles were produced in sturdy wood, as well as more traditional styles like your oak and leather rocker. In 1872, they moved production to Chicago and changed the name to J.S. Ford, Johnson Co – the name on your chair’s red label. Although I found several chairs made

by Ford & Johnson offered for more than $400, and a few that sold for around $200, they were in pristine condition. If you want to make a profit on your $15 chair, you might consider having the black upholstered sections restored, including the button tufting on the back. I rather like the patina on the worn arms. The seat, however, needs to be replaced to restore the full comfort intended by its makers.
