Vital nutrients needed for aging bodies Nutrition holds the key to healthy aging. After the age of 50, the body’s ability to absorb certain nutrients diminishes so maintaining healthy eating habits can play a significant role in keeping chronic illnesses at bay or in check.

With all of the changes in the food pyramid these last few years, it is easy to be confused about portions and guidelines. Certain nutrients like B-12, vitamin D, potassium, calcium and fiber are vital to optimal health.

The USDA now provides information on smart eating tips through its My Plate program (https://www. choosemyplate. gov/MyPlatePlan).

The food pyramids of yesterday have been replaced by the “smart plate” that illustrates portions and smart food choices.

Food insecurity affects nutrition In many instances, access to healthy food choices can be challenging for older adults.

There are many reasons older adults may be experiencing hunger and food insecurity.

A decline in health or mobility may make it difficult for older adults to grocery shop. With the growing geographical transience of family members, many older adults may be without nearby family and friends who can assist with food shopping or they may need help preparing food. The result is millions of older adults left alone to fend for themselves, often hungry, and food insecure. Enlisting in a meal delivery service is one way older adults can reap the nutritional value of good food.

According to Feeding America, nearly 5 million older adults face hunger in the United States. The rate of hunger among seniors 60+ has increased 45% since 2001, mostly due to the lingering effects of the 2008-9 recession (FeedingAmerica.com). Nearly 63% of households with an older adult age 50+

face an impossible choice – groceries or medicines. Older adults shouldn’t have to choose between nutritious meals and the medications they need to live a healthy life.

Home-delivered meals can boost nutrition Winston, 96, is young in spirit. Born in Nashville, his career as a NASA engineer and as a Navy Lieutenant took him to many other parts of the world, including North Korea. He eventually moved back to Nashville because he wanted to live the rest of his life in the home he purchased in 1950.

Before Winston began receiving meals, he had lost fifteen pounds in six months. His doctors were concerned. They urged him to eat meals that provide the nutrition he needs to prevent a rapid decline in health. His family applauded his decision to have FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels deliver healthy meals to him.

An open letter to the community from our soon-to-retire executive director It has been my great honor to serve as executive director of FiftyForward for the past 29 years.

During this time, I have seen firsthand the difference FiftyForward has made in the lives of older adults and have had the joy of hearing from thousands of people about the positive impact our organization has made in their lives or the lives of their loved ones. Having served in a leadership role in nonprofit human service organizations as a staff member and as a volunteer for the past 50 years, without hesitation, I can say no organization in our community accomplishes more to impact the lives of others at less financial cost.

I have been proud and fortunate to have worked with so many caring and professional staff and hundreds of generous and resourceful volunteers to accomplish our significant mission: FiftyForward supports, champions and enhances life for those 50 and older.

FiftyForward is somewhat unique among organizations serving older adults across the country. We stand among the elite 1% of agencies in the United States focused on older adults with five of our seven lifelong learning centers accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers. The services we provide for active older adults, for children through our intergenerational programs and for vulnerable adults who need supportive care as they age, are typically provided through 10-15 individual nonprofit organizations in other communities.

To those of you who have contributed time, talent or finances to improve the lives of older adults in our community, we are thankful. For those of you who have not yet been associated with FiftyForward, I ask that you consider supporting the organization through your financial support, through your volunteer service or by referring people to us who can benefit from our services.

We need you to be an advocate and spread the word that FiftyForward is a wellestablished and trusted resource for older adults and their families in Middle Tennessee.

It’s important to note the population age 60 and older is projected to increase by 33% in Davidson County and 87% in Williamson County over the period from 2010 to 2020. (Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research/Haslam College of Business/UTK). For the past 62 years, FiftyForward has provided high-quality programs and services for this demographic. Your support is imperative as we continue to meet the challenges facing this group that is growing exponentially.

The individuals we serve have contributed so much to the quality of life in our community and many continue to do so daily through their volunteer service at FiftyForward and across Middle Tennessee. Certainly, they deserve the very best that our community has to offer. With your involvement and support, FiftyForward will continue to be there for all of us well into the future.

Ashley Hunter, FiftyForward Victory Over Crime director, is a Licensed Master Level Social Worker who has devoted her career to advocating for the wellbeing of the older adult population. With the Victory Over Crime program she works to provide assistance to adults 50+ who have been affected by crime.

The holidays are a wonderful time to celebrate with family and loved ones! While this is a very joyous time, hectic schedules and increased stress can present safety risks. FiftyForward Victory Over Crime recommends the following safety tips during this holiday season: 1. Be aware of holiday porch thieves. People are more likely to shop online during the holidays than any other time of year. Don’t let a thief snag a gift intended for your loved ones! When online shopping, take advantage of email delivery alerts or other protection benefits the vendor provides to ensure you get your packages as planned. Many stores will allow you to order your gifts online and have them delivered to the store for pick up in person. You may even want to have packages delivered to your workplace.

3. Take precautions when shopping in brick and mortar locations. Always be alert and aware of your surroundings, especially in parking lots. Keep your head up and make eye contact with people you pass.

Try to park your car close to the store in well-lit areas.

If you need to drop packages off at your car while you continue to shop, always place items in your trunk, out of sight from potential thieves.

4. Plan ahead for your holiday travels. Keep your home and belongings safe while you are away by installing a home security system. Place lights inside and outside your home on timers so your house looks occupied while you are away. Burglars are less likely to target homes when they think people are home. Have the post office hold your mail for the time that you are away.

2. Protect yourself when shopping online. When shopping online make sure the shopping website has “https:” before the website address or url. This ensures that the website is a secure site that uses strong encrytion so hackers cannot access your credit card information.

Volunteers praise the benefits of engagement, giving back

Many individuals may think of volunteering as an altruistic activity done by an individual or group to provide services that benefit another person or an organization. However, volunteering may not be truly selfless. Research shows volunteering can (and often does) benefit 6 | Forward Focus

the person doing the work. These benefits often include improvements in physical, social, emotional and mental well-being and counter stress.

Stress can be extremely damaging and is a major risk factor for chronic disease and mortality. Retirement is often thought of as a carefree period in an individual’s life, but research has shown that there is actually an increased level of stress in this age group. Being involved in a volunteer program that boosts selfesteem and feelings of competence may be particularly effective in reducing stress.

Two FiftyForward volunteer programs specifically for older adults – RSVP and Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) – are offered locally. Both programs are supported by Senior Corps, a division of the National Corporation for Community and Service (NCCS), the federal agency that promotes volunteering, service and civic engagement.

FiftyForward FGP volunteers serve in Davidson County elementary schools and child care centers. FiftyForward RSVP volunteers serve as tutors with the FiftyForward Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) program as delivery drivers and kitchen prep assistants with FiftyForward Meals on Wheels (now FiftyForward Fresh).

Volunteering at any age offers benefits and improves mental health. Stress, social isolation and loneliness -- especially for older adults -- may increase the risk for illness, disease and mortality.

Many people in the prime of life work and interact daily with others but upon retirement these connections change and often individuals experience loneliness and isolation.

You see how other people live each day.

It makes small things not so important.”

All of these volunteers find joy and purposein serving others.

Mental health is physical health

A

t the age of 20, the summer before my senior year of college, I became a mental health and suicide prevention advocate in the same way many others do. I lost a loved one to suicide. On July 23, 2005, my 27-year-old cousin, Danny—who was a loving husband, son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend—died by suicide. Prior to his death, Danny dealt with a brief, yet intense, episode of major depression.

According to Mental Health America, major depression is one of the most common mental illnesses, affecting more than 16 million American adults each year. It causes people to lose pleasure from daily life, can complicate other medical conditions and, as in the case of my cousin, can even be serious enough to lead to suicide. Although, it’s important to note that the majority of people with depression experience a full remission of the disorder with effective treatment (if an individual seeks treatment).

When someone experiences a mental Danny Iselin illness such as depression, there are physical side effects such as chronic pain or digestive disorders. An individual may experience difficulty concentrating, issues with memory ,or difficulty making decisions. Other symptoms can include sleeping too much or too little, an increase or decrease in appetite, weight loss or weight gain, and fatigue or loss of energy.

Over the years I’ve often heard people—even those working in the mental health community—talk about how mental health is just as important as physical health. And while I understand their point, I’d take it one step further -- mental health IS physical health. The brain is just as much a part of one’s physical body as the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, or any other organ. We need to treat it as such.

As this year marks the 13-year anniversary of my cousin’s death, I choose to honor his memory by continuing to speak up; until we start treating the brain with the same care and compassion that we do the other parts of our bodies, the stigma around mental health will continue. We can and must do better.

The recent suicides of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade underscore the need to better understand suicide, mental health and overcoming depression. This column speaks to the need to understand suicide at every age. Isolation and depression are real regardless of social status, age or income levels. As we head into the holidays when isolation and depression rates seem to escalate, it seems fitting to underscore readily available community resources and to offer a reminder that reaching out for help is sign of strength, not weakness.

Statistics show seniors remaining at home who receive food assistance such as home-delivered meals save billions in Medicare and Medicaid costs. The cost of feeding one older adult on a home-delivered meal service like FiftyForward Fresh for ONE year is roughly the same as ONE day in a hospital or TEN days in a nursing home (Meals on Wheels America 2018 fact sheet). When weighing the cost of hospital care versus the cost of nutrient-packed home-delivered meals, it pays to eat healthy.

What you can do to stay healthy: • Maintain a healthy weight or lose weight safely if necessary (always consult a doctor before starting a weight loss program).

FiftyForward Fresh Did you know that the first known Meals on Wheels delivery was by a small group of Philadelphia citizens in 1954? Today, the network boasts more than 5,000 independently-run local programs across the country. FiftyForward Meals on Wheels began in 1969 – in 2019 we will celebrate 50 years of service delivering meals to older adults in the Nashville community. FiftyForward receives no government funding for our home-delivered meal service and is funded entirely by donors.

Through an exciting healthy food initiative, our longstanding FiftyForward Meals on Wheels program is being transformed to FiftyForward Fresh, a collaboration between FiftyForward and The Nashville Food Project providing home delivery of the highest quality fresh, healthy food and continued connection to all the essential FiftyForward supportive services for adults 50 and older.

Meals on Wheels programs are often the first line of support for isolated and food insecure older adults in our community. Not only do they deliver a nutrient dense meal, but volunteers provide a safety check and social interaction with a friendly and caring volunteer. For some older adults, this delivery may be the only social interaction they have each day.

FiftyForward Fresh delivers the support that older adults need to live independently in their homes as they wish. Of those who receive meals: • • •

Membership fees to increase in January Effective January 2019, FiftyForward center membership fees will increase to $12* a month. Our centers offer lifelong learning and engaging programs (arts, exercise and education) and access to resources to live true to the FiftyForward mission: to support, champion and enhance life for those 50 and older.

Five of the seven FiftyForward lifelong learning centers are among the elite 1% of centers in the United States, recognized by the National Institute of Senior Centers, for quality and effectiveness.

As a nonprofit agency, we rely on proceeds from annual membership and program fees, special events, local government grants and funders, active volunteers and other thoughtful and generous community supporters to provide engagement opportunities for older adults.

FiftyForward has not raised membership rates in eight years.

This increase will offset the costs we are seeing to maintain our lifelong learning centers and programs. *FiftyForward College Grove rates (due to a community partnership with the Williamson County Department of Recreation) will increase to $9 a month.

Bob grew up in northwest Ohio and moved to Nashville in 1971.

He played for years in Shakey’s Pizza Parlors which included a live “Dixieland” radio show on station WAMB. In 1976 Bob began a 20-year stint as a musician in live shows at Opryland USA and four years on the General Jackson Showboat. Since 1989 Bob has been touring America with Mr. Jack Daniel’s Original Silver Cornet Band. He sings, plays the banjo and tenor guitar. You can see Bob each year in “Tuba Christmas.”

An Evening in Old Hollywood

Casino Night

FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center embraced “old school” Hollywood glam for its first fundraising and friendraising event, An Evening in Old Hollywood, on Sept. 28 held at its sister center, FiftyForward Martin Center (906 Heritage Way, Brentwood 37027).

Attendees arrived in style, took glamour photographs on the red carpet, enjoyed a catered dinner, silent auction, live music from the 1940s and, of course, dancing.

On the heels of the very successful inaugural casino night last year, FiftyForward Donelson Station again hosted a casino night which featured several games – blackjack, poker, Texas Hold ’em, craps and slot machines -- to the delight of center and community members. The event also featured live jazz music by the Jeffrey Lein Trio and a wonderful reception by The Donelson Café.

Fall for FiftyForward Breakfast Annually, FiftyForward hosts this breakfast as a fund- and friendraising event to highlight its many programs and services for older adults to community members who may not have heard of them.

Among the attendees are longtime supporters and friends of the agency who act as table hosts to illuminate the programs and services and answer questions.

As part of the program, two speakers shared their stories with the attendees: FiftyForward Knowles member, James Trent, shared that he came to be a member of FiftyForward Knowles after his wife’s passing. He was isolated and grieving. At the center he found help in the grief support group. He then started taking classes, going on trips, and most of all, making new friends. It truly changed his outlook.

Kathryn Russell shared the story of how they were looking for an outlet for her mom, Ola who at 94, was isolated at home and needed something to do. She introduced her to FiftyForward Adult Day Services. Now Ola is excited about going to see her friends and participating in activities that keep her happy and engaged.

The Fall for FiftyForward Breakfast was co-chaired by FiftyForward Board Members Theresa Zuckowsky and Tracy Evers. Breakfast sponsors included Bacon & Caviar, Ingram, Vanderbilt University Medical Center and First Tennessee.

FiftyForward Martin Center Card Crusaders create collectible works of art while building companionship in their home community

Following a very happy and loving marriage of almost 58 years, Marilyn Nevens suddenly lost her husband. Feeling the loss on many levels she found her new home, new friends and a new beginning at FiftyForward Martin Center.

Nevens, now 94, recalls, “We went through World War II together. I as a wife and mother, Norbert as a 3½ year Marine in naval aviation. Then suddenly one day I became a widow. I thought my world had ended.”

Nevens started as a center member and regularly volunteered at the reception desk.

She served on the welcoming committee and helped with other odd tasks as needed. Little did she know, however, that her greatest love and passion would be to raise funds to purchase a new vehicle for the center.

It all started with a class taught Judy Chilton, another center member who loved the arts and who has interest in reaching others.

Nevens recalls not wanting her [Judy] to stop.

The fundraising effort took on a life of its own earning the name, Project Transportation.

As chair of the effort, Nevens first launched several fundraising projects including piggy bank collections, writing request letters for contributions and initially making and selling Christmas cards that are one-of-a-kind works of art handcrafted using the creative Iris paper folding method.

New designs come from the Card Crusader crafters and from the community. A recent card honoring veterans has been well received.

Initially a concept from fellow Crusader Judy Davis, the litmus test for the card was to determine how they could incorporate some detail into the card using the Iris method.

To date, the Card Crusaders have raised more than $26,000 for their beloved center. Over the years, they have purchased a van, paid for new ottomans in the center, purchased a 72-inch television, resurfaced game tables and bought new chairs for the tables, as well as adding some upgrades to the parking lot.

Clientele for the cards varies from individuals to corporate buyers. With custom designs and cards for all occasion the FiftyForward Martin Center Card Crusaders have done work for businesses ranging from Merrill Lynch to Cigna-HealthSpring.

A self-professed fan of the Card Crusaders, Beth Sanders, said she bought one of the group’s kitty sympathy cards, framed it and gave it to her niece since her cat had passed the week before.

Her niece, Jennifer Osborne, was touched by the personal touch of the handcrafted card.

“Losing someone you love is never easy,” said Osborne. “The pet sympathy card we received was just beautiful. It meant so much to us that the cat on the card resembled Howie.” continued on page 19 Winter 2018 | 15

Joyce Keistler leaves a legacy at

FiftyForward Martin Center

J

oyce Keistler is retiring from FiftyForward Martin Center leaving a strong foundation, literally and figuratively.

What Keistler started more than 22 years ago has grown into a strong and vibrant community offering advocacy and opportunity for older adults. As the center director of FiftyForward Martin Center for 22 years, it is no surprise she lives true to the agency mission to support, champion and enhance the lives of those 50 and older.

In fact she helped launch the center’s Card Crusaders, a group of entrepreneurs ranging in age from 60-90+ years, who handcraft greeting cards that are beautiful works of art.

Her legacy to the Brentwood and Franklin communities is remarkable having provided resources and engagement for generations. In fact, sometimes she and her husband Roland have referenced “Martin” [or the Martin Center] as their third child.

I admire Joyce for her kindness, her political savvy, her concern for everyone who participates in the center and for her steadfast dedication to making the FiftyForward Martin Center an example for other centers across the nation to emulate.

“Joyce cares about older adults so much,” said Marilyn Nevens, a longtime FiftyForward Martin Center Card Crusaders and center member. “She is a warm and caring person and we will miss her so much when she retires. Of course, we wish her well and are excited for her to have more time with her family.”

The center had humble beginnings. What started in August 1996 as the Brentwood Seniors Group that met one day a week at the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home has grown exponentially over the years. In 1997, the program needed more space and moved to the former Presbytery Offices at Brentwood First Presbyterian Church on Franklin Road where it remained for five years. This served as a strong foundation to support the rapidly growing older adult population in the Brentwood area. leadership -- as well as design from David Minnigan of Earl Swensson Associates -- a wonderful facility was created. FiftyForward Martin Center is now home to hundreds of members, as well as the home base for our well-known entrepreneurs, the FiftyForward Martin Center Card Crusaders.

“The idea for a center in Brentwood for older adults grew out of a Leadership Brentwood study group where Joyce championed the need to have a place where active older adults could come together to develop friendships, learn new skills, volunteer and enjoy a rewarding and meaningful quality of life,” said FiftyForward Executive Director Janet Jernigan. “Joyce took this idea to political leaders in Williamson County community and to FiftyForward and we all worked together to make her dream a reality. I admire Joyce for her kindness, her political savvy, her concern for everyone who participates in the center and for her steadfast dedication to making the FiftyForward Martin Center an example for other centers across the nation to emulate.”

Joyce is now looking forward to spending more time with her husband who has always supported her commitment to FiftyForward Martin Center and FiftyForward as well as her two grandsons.

Interfaith Dental launches Smile on 60+ with 15 area dental practices

By Mattie Callahan, Smile on 60+ program coordinator SMILE ON 60+, a statewide senior oral health initiative led by Interfaith Dental, has officially launched a new partnership with 15 dental clinics to provide oral health care services and education to seniors in need.

SMILE ON 60+ hopes to connect low-income seniors without dental insurance to a dental home for treatment and ongoing oral health care.

In addition, the program hosts free workshops to help older adults learn tips and tricks to better care for their mouth and teeth. “Tooth Wisdom� workshops are led by a dental professional and each participant receives a goody bag with oral health products. The free workshops will be held at many FiftyForward locations over the next few months.

To qualify for SMILE ON 60+ individuals must be at least 60-years-old, a Tennessee resident, mobile (able to self-transport or receive transport to clinic), have an income level below 200% poverty and dentally uninsured. The program covers many common dental procedures including cleaning, extractions, fillings, and dentures for a fee of $25 per visit.

While Interfaith Dental is coordinating the project, they have more than 22 partners who plan to join the program over a 3-year period (covering 52 counties and 42 locations including 2 mobile units). Funding for this project is provided through a grant awarded by the Davidson County Chancery Court, Part III from the SeniorTrust/ElderTrust settlement (Case No. 11-1548-III) and through a contract administered by the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability. Decorative items can have sentimental as well as monetary value Dear Connie Sue, I love reading your “It’s Just Stuff” appraisals and have an item for your consideration. I am considering selling it in my booth at an antiques mall.

It’s a Dietz Monarch lantern - Fitzall New York U.S.A. LOC NOB. PAT’D 3-10-14, which appears to be in very good condition.

Pauley, online Dear Pauley, Robert Edwin Dietz bought a New York lamp oil company to make whale oil useable for lanterns. In 1840, his brothers joined him and together they bought another lamp oil company. In 1845, they added a lantern maker to their holdings. Although gas lighting for homes was introduced in 1817, people outside of cities still used oil lamps and lanterns for quite some time.

Two improvements included in your Dietz Monarch lantern date it after 1918. In 1913 the Dietz family lantern company introduced the FitAll globe to guard the flame from wind and weather; In 1918, the LocNob was added to reduce the wobble of the globe inside the lantern. Globes came in various colors in addition to clear. Red is quite popular.

At an antique mall the retail price range would fall between $35-$95.

Your asking price should be adjusted up or down to the mall’s location and clientele. The same lantern sells on eBay for $30. With the scarcity of whale oil and the smoke and smell of kerosene, many lantern lovers use a tea candle inside the globe for a bit of flicker.

Dear Connie Sue, Can you tell me about these Danish antique purses I’ve inherited? Any value other than sentimental?

Tina, online Dear Tina, Floral needlepoint purses with a simple metal frame and clasp sell slowly for less than $10 at tag sales. I see them priced for $12 in antique malls. They are fairly plentiful, and are pretty little purses.

Because we are still partying as if we lived in Downton Abbey, demand for flashy Edwardian style accessories is great. Your black velvet drawstring purse would add sparkle to any little black dress. The puffy embroidery adds even more depth with various sized metallic sequins. I think a woman who needed, by Saturday, a Downtown Abby themed costume would pay as much as $85.

Dear Connie Sue, This wooden box with 7 “coasters” was given to my mother in the early 1950s by an elderly couple who were moving closer to town because they could no longer drive. The box measures 2 and 1/2 inches high and 4 and 1/4 inches wide and is marked “made in Japan.” Can you give me any information on the box and coasters? I was wondering why a coaster would be made of wood.

Judy, Lebanon Dear Judy, After 1921, U.S. Customs regulations required not only the words “made in,” but for the country of origin to be identified in English. Prior to this rule, Japanese items were often marked Nippon. By 1947, the mark Made in Occupied Japan was required until 1952. This narrows the date of production for your wooden coaster set between 1921 and 1947.

The incised mark includes a pagoda which must signify the maker.

Although Japanese pottery and porcelain marks are available, woodworker’s marks are a bit more obscure. I did, however, find a few similar coaster sets with incised decoration available for sale. They were priced around $20.

There were originally eight coasters. And I agree, the wood coasters don’t absorb much moisture. But they are attractive decorated discs and the round box is quite functional for corralling tiny little things.

The most charming thing about your wooden box, though, is that you still recall the story your mother shared of the relocating elderly couple’s gift in the 1950s.
