Donelson Station will be offering a free Qigong class on Mondays at 10 a.m. Toney Baily who teaches Qi-Gong is also a licensed masseuse and will be doing chair massages on Thursdays. A Weight Watchers program meets on Mondays at 9 a.m. Senior Citizens get one dollar off membership per week.

First Conversations about Caregiving

by Gretchen Funk, MSW Director, FiftyForward Care Team Some things that we do for the first time we highly anticipate – a first trip to a new destination, the arrival of a first grandchild. Others bring a mix of excitement and trepidation – the first day at a new job, a first date.

Talking with an aging loved one about planning for the future can be a more anxietyprovoking “first,” but it doesn’t have to be an actual event. It’s usually best if these first forays into planning to meet the challenges and opportunities of aging occur naturally, over the course of time, taking advantage of circumstances that arise. For instance, when family gathers at mom and dad’s for the traditional holiday meal and it’s apparent that hosting everyone is just too much for them now, sow the seeds of change in casual conversation. Reminisce and thank mom and dad for their years of wonderful holiday celebrations then offer to host everyone next year as long as mom will still make her famous apple pie! Tone is important – keep things light-hearted and nonjudgmental whenever possible.

Be prepared to discuss as much or as little as your older loved ones are comfortable with at that first talk. If you listen without pushing and help your loved ones to feel as comfortable as possible, future discussions will be easier.

If the conversation about what the future holds will be a true “first,” preparation is important. Consider how your loved one would like to be approached – in private, oneon-one or with all the kids together, for instance. If at all possible, broach the topic face-to-face so you can communicate your genuine love, respect and concern. Handling details and planning can happen over the phone or by email later if that works best.

Perhaps the first conversation will be brief. For instance, “Dad, Uncle Bill and Aunt Mary just moved to an assisted living residence. They’re just a little older than you. We were wondering what you’d like to happen if it got hard for you to stay in this big house.” Be prepared to discuss as much or as little as your older loved ones are comfortable with at that first talk. Be prepared to touch on the pertinent issues (health care, legal and financial issues, housing options, etc.) If there is openness, but try not to feel that you must cover certain things no matter what. If you listen without pushing and help your loved ones feel as comfortable as possible, future discussions will be easier. Maybe they already have a well thought out plan which you can wholeheartedly endorse. If you face a reluctance to talk at this first conversation, gently let your loved one know that you will return to the topic in the future. Then you can regroup and reevaluate.

Geriatric care managers often help families prepare for these “first” conversations.

After the topic of planning for the future is raised and that first talk is behind you, most everyone feels a sense of relief. How each family continues the conversation is up to them – the only necessary constants are mutual respect and consideration. Mr. Black received a phone call from a contractor with RIP-U-OFF Roofing Company.

The contractor was in the neighborhood providing free estimates and wanted to schedule an appointment. It seemed pretty harmless since the offer was free, so Mr. Black agreed to let him look at his roof. The inspection revealed damages to the roof likely as a result of a recent storm. The contractor promised the cost of the repairs would not exceed the insurance settlement with one condition. Mr. Black must instruct the claims adjuster to make the check payable to Mr. Black and the contractor.

Mr. Black signed the contract and the check for $5500 over to the contractor. The contractor did not do the work although Mr. Black made multiple attempts to contact him. Mr. Black soon realized that he had been scammed and contacted FiftyForward Victory Over Crime for assistance. The staff assisted Mr. Black in receiving legal advice, understanding the criminal process and filing complaints with the appropriate authorities. With persistent advocacy over the period of four months, Mr. Black is scheduled to receive a full refund from the contractor. * * Disclaimer: Every situation is unique and may not end with the same results.

To avoid becoming a victim of a scam, it is critical to research the background of the company or individual(s). The following are tips you should know before hiring a contractor.

1. Check with the Contractors State License Board to make sure the contractor is properly licensed. You may verify a license at www.tn.gov/ regboards/contractors/ or contact 1-800-544-7693.

2. Note a home improvement license is required for residential remodeling projects from $3,000 to less than $25,000 (total cost or contract, including materials and labor.) Also, roofing contractors being paid by insurance companies, must include specific consumer protection language in their contract:

Did the contractor stick to the schedule and terms of the contract?

Were you pleased with the work and the way it was done?

Was the contractor willing to resolve any problems?

Did the contractor willingly make any necessary corrections?

6. Never pay more than 1/3 of the cost of the project as a deposit. The payments should be placed on a schedule and not get ahead of the work. Never pay for the total project up front.

7. Make sure the contract includes everything that you and the contractor have agreed upon, and don’t sign until you understand and agree with all terms.

8. Make frequent inspections of the work as you are able.

The Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors has posted the following statement on their website at www.tn.gov/regboards/ contractors/ WARNING! Beware of contractors making door-to-door or telephone solicitations offering to make repairs to roofs and other storm damage to your home. Never sign over the insurance check; do not pay with cash, or pay the total charges before the work is complete. The Home Improvement law prohibits contractors from asking for a down-payment of more than 1/3 of the total contract.

If you have been the victim of a crime, perhaps Victory Over Crime can assist. The eligibility requirements of the program include age 50 or over, resident of Davidson county or crime occurred in Davidson county, crime occurred within the past year and the victim did not participate in the crime. Victory Over Crime provides services to primary and secondary victims of crime.

FiftyForward RSVP welcomes two volunteers who are making a difference in our community Nashville Zoo. He is a great example of a first time tutor who has jumped right in and made a difference in the lives of the children he serves.

First time RSVP volunteers are making a difference in two of FiftyForward’s most impactful placements.

Not ones to let being “the new kid on the block” hold them back, Charlie Doggett and Fred Frazier have jumped right in to their respective positions and are using their time and talent to serve others.

FiftyForward Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) volunteer Charlie Doggett found his perfect volunteer match as a tutor for first and second graders at Tulip Grove Elementary. Charlie heard about the FLIP program from another volunteer and decided to give tutoring a try. According to Davidson County FLIP Coordinator Michele Clark, “Charlie is an excellent tutor, he has a wonderful rapport with the students and has proven to be a real natural.”

While many FLIP tutors are former educators, some of the most successful tutors don’t have a teaching background – they just love reading and love children. “All four of my kids [that I tutor] are delightful,” said Doggett. “The most rewarding part of tutoring is seeing the progress that they have made. The materials provided by the FLIP program are easy to use and the workbooks are especially fantastic.”

Doggett is retired from a career with Lifeway Publishing and he is also an active volunteer at his Church and enjoys serving as a docent at The 6 | Forward Focus

FLIP is currently recruiting tutors for the 2014/15 school year in May. If you have a background in education or just love reading and working with children, we invite you to consider joining us as a FLIP volunteer. FLIP tutors are adults 55 and over who commit to two hours once a week during the school year. Each tutor is paired with three or four children in grades K – 4 with whom they meet individually for a half hour.

FLIP provides training and tutoring materials.

Volunteers are needed for both Davidson and Williamson counties. FLIP volunteers typically provide reading instruction but a limited number of math tutors are needed as well.

FiftyForward RSVP volunteer Fred Frazier is a Vietnam Veteran whose passion for serving other veterans has led him to two volunteer placements through RSVP. Fred is a regular on the Wednesday food truck runs to Operation Stand Down. Fred and a group of RSVP volunteers gather at The Nashville Food Project on Hillsboro Road and load the truck with a delicious, nutritious meal and then deliver and serve that meal to veterans and neighbors at Operation Stand Down (1125 12th Ave S., Nashville, TN 37203). Proudly sporting his Vietnam Vet ball cap, Fred develops an instant rapport with those being served.

Fred also serves as a van driver for the Nashville VA Medical Center, making a difference for patients who are not able to drive themselves back and forth

to appointments. Fred’s reliability and friendly nature make him the perfect volunteer for this position.

“I volunteer four hours a week to drive the patient services van at the VA Hospital. Every week I get a chance to help another veteran get to the hospital or to get home. I get to meet some great people and hear some amazing stories,” said Frazier.

RSVP and the VA Medical Center are currently seeking additional volunteers to serve as drivers.

Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and be willing to drive at least one morning or afternoon a week. Drivers are required to attend a training session and complete the VA volunteer screening process.

To streamline the training and screening process for RSVP volunteers, the VA Hospital is hosting a special orientation session on Tuesday, April 8 at 9 a.m. There are only ten slots available for this training. YELLOW DOT program to save lives in Tennessee Approximately 7.4% of Tennessee’s older adult drivers have been involved in some type of fatal or injury-related crash in their lifetime. The Tennessee Department of Transportation’s new Yellow DOT program is part of a national effort, designed to provide emergency responders with an individual’s medical information immediately upon arriving at the scene of the accident. Yellow DOT is a free program aimed at saving those precious seconds immediately following a serious incident that could mean the difference between life and death.

A Metro Nashville Library free service

Nashville Talking Library The Nashville Talking Library is an audio-

reading and information service of the Nashville Public Library. This free service is available to individuals who cannot read normally printed matter because of visual, physical or other impairment.

“The unique thing about our service,” says Program Manager Michael Waggoner, “is that all they have to do is turn on the receiver and the participants can hear The Tennessean and other print materials being read.”

Waggoner says the easiest way to enroll in this program is to visit the Nashville Public Library website and click on the link at the bottom of the page under Outreach. The one-page application can be found on this site and the service is available to, “basically anybody in Davidson, Williamson and surrounding counties,” says Waggoner.

The entire packet program recipients will receive upon enrollment includes a Yellow DOT vehicle decal to alert first responders, a medical information form, which will include a photo, and an instruction brochure. The completed packet is designed to be stored in the program participant’s glove compartment so first responders have easy access to this critical information. Several locations throughout the state serve as enrollment sites for the program where you can have your photo taken and complete the entire packet. Special Feature Election Day is May 6 – Be an informed voter!

Public Defender represents those accused of committing crimes who cannot afford to hire a lawyer.

Sheriff duties differ by county. In Davidson County the sheriff is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of inmates in county jails and the service of all civil process (papers issued by a court in a civil lawsuit). In Williamson County, the Sheriff prevents crimes, investigates criminal conduct and arrests offenders as well. This position also operates the jail and serves civil process and other orders of the courts.

Court Clerks

Election season is in high gear for the primary election on May 6, 2014. With many Davidson and Williamson County offices on the ballot, yard signs, mail pieces and personal appearances of candidates are becoming an every day occurrence.

While FiftyForward does not endorse candidates, we want you to be an informed voter. The number of positions on the ballot, as well as similar titles can be confusing. The following is a partial overview of the duties of some positions on the May ballot.

•

Circuit Court Judges (Eight divisions are on the ballot in Davidson County) hear contract disputes, civil torts, condemnations, worker’s compensation claims in Divisions I, II, V, VI and VII; hear domestic matters in Divisions III and IV; and hear cases involving administration of estates and conservatorships in Division VII. The four positions on the ballot in Williamson County rotate between the four divisions which hear either chancery, circuit, criminal or probate matters.

Juvenile Court Judges preside over cases involving parentage, visitation and child support, dependency, neglect and abuse, and offenses which are only crimes if committed by a minor.

•

General Session Judges (11 judgeships are the Davidson County ballot and two on the Williamson County ballot) hear civil, traffic and metropolitan ordinance violations, as well as criminal cases in which the penalty is no more than eleven months and 29 days.

•

District Attorney General is responsible for representing the State of Tennessee in all criminal cases that occur within the respective county.

The Circuit Court Clerk maintains the records of the circuit courts, as well as the civil records of the General Sessions Courts.

The Chancery Court Clerk and Master provides support and filing for the Chancery Courts.

•

Positions on the ballot in both Davidson and Williamson County include: •

The Juvenile Court Clerk provides support and filing for the Juvenile Court.

•

County Trustee Is responsible for overseeing the collection of property taxes and the administration of various property tax relief programs.

•

Register of Deeds is the custodian of legal documents pertaining to real property.

Positions in Davidson County Only: •

Criminal Court Judges hear criminal cases, as well as misdemeanor appeals from lower courts through six divisions, all of which are on the ballot.

•

Chancellors may modify the application of strict legal rules and adapt relief to the circumstances of individual cases. Issues handled by the Chancery Court may include lawsuits, contract disputes, application for injunctions and name changes while matters such as divorces, adoptions and workers’ compensation can be heard by either the Chancery or Circuit Court. There are four Chancellors (Parts I, II, III, IV) on the ballot.

Positions in Williamson County Only: •

County Mayor directly supervises the

following county departments: Agricultural Extension, Animal Control, Archives, Budget & Purchasing, Community Development, Economic Development, Emergency Communications, Emergency Management, Human Resources, Information Technology, Landfill, Property Management & Security, Recreation, Recycling, Risk Management, and Sewage Disposal Management.

County Commissioners (12 Districts with two nominees from each district) serve as the legislative body of the county government.

•

County Clerk drafts and maintains meeting notes and County Commission records.

This election will be followed by the Davidson and Williamson County General Election on August 7.

That date will also be the Primary Election for select State offices.

Community rallies behind crisis

FiftyForward and YMCA reach out to members on heels of disaster

By Susan W. Sizemore FiftyForward Communications Director The most unfortunate of circumstances can bring people together and strengthen community.

That is precisely what happened at the Bellevue Family YMCA and the J. L Turner Center on February 3rd, when a light plane crashed just 20 feet from the building, killing the pilot and three of his relatives. Lives were lost, families were affected and center members and employees were reminded of how life can change in the blink of an eye.

Aviation experts praised the hero pilot for banking his plane into the ground instead of into rush-hour traffic or the adjacent building just yards away.

The impact of the accident continues to resonate throughout the Nashville community as lives were forever changed.

“When accidents happen there is usually little or no warning and instinct just takes over,” said Lori Corley, FiftyForward, Director of Active Aging, who oversees the organization’s seven centers in Middle Tennessee. “It is tragic when something like this happens. What now remains is for all of us to look ahead and focus on the future. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the accident victims.”

Corley continued, “We are thankful to have such a good working relationship with our community partner and neighbor as the YMCA took the leadership role in getting people to safety as quickly as possible.”

In fact on the day of the accident, FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center had just closed and none of the organization’s members were at the facility when the plane crashed. However, two FiftyForward employees were on site and witnessed the devastation, heard the crash and were part of the evacuation process.

A LONG AND HEALTHY PARTNERSHIP FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center and the YMCA of Middle Tennessee have a long relationship dating back to 2006.

This unique partnership, the first of its kind in the country, offers all Bellevue YMCA members who are 50+ an automatic enrollment as members of J. L. Turner Center.

“To say that the accident is behind us is an understatement,” said Corley.

“Employees, center members and the community at large will long remember and relive this devastating day of grief, trauma and loss.”

Circumstance such as these often leave in their wake, grief, depression and anxiety.

FiftyForward and the YMCA are continuing to rebuild the community by offering counseling, resources and reaching out to the affected families.

According to Gail Sonia, Volunteer Race Director for FiftyForward’s Viva la Diva, “I worked with Dan when he was Group Vice President here in Tennessee and am confident he returns bringing a winning combination of experience with Middle Tennessee along with fresh ideas and perspective Dan Dummermuth gained during his leadership of the Colorado YMCA. I am eager to seeing his vision for the YMCA of Middle Tennessee in the coming years.”

MLK National Day of Service RSVP and Meals on Wheels were thankful for the wonderful supporters who participated in our MLK National Day of Service project.

Not only did we have a full house of volunteers but Congressman Jim Cooper and Mayor Karl Dean dropped by to show their support. Sixty Meals on Wheels clients received emergency food bags to have in case bad weather prevents hot meal delivery and hundreds of greeting cards were created for FiftyForward Adult Day Services and Meals on Wheels clients.

It was all smiles as UPS presented FiftyForward Bordeaux a $15,000 grant for the center’s transportation program. We are especially grateful to board member Margaret Dunlap who serves as Marketing Manager for UPS and played a huge role in making this possible.

What do I do with THAT? Walking down the aisles of the grocery store these days is quite different from years past. There are more and more new items especially ones from other countries. I’m familiar with a few since my eldest daughter was a Japanese major in college and having Celiac disease, she is always looking for interesting foods and spices that don’t contain wheat. Here are a few of my favorite “exotic” new foods.

POLENTA Polenta is ground corn. You can buy it dry and cook it but I prefer to purchase it in a tube for its ease and versatility. Slice it and grill it, saute it, bake it, top it with vegetables or use as a base for little pizzas. Think of it as a substitute for pasta, potatoes or bread and the possibilities are endless! The following recipe is one of my favorites from Cooking Light. I’ve substituted sausage for ground turkey.

POLENTA LASAGNA Ingredients 1 (26-ounce) jar marinara sauce, divided 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 cup finely chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper 1 cup ground turkey, cooked and crumbled 1 cup chopped mushrooms 1/2 cup chopped zucchini 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 (16-ounce) tube of polenta, cut into 18 slices 1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. Spoon 1/2 cup marinara sauce into an 8-inch square baking dish to cover bottom, and set aside.

3. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and bell pepper; sauté 4 minutes or until tender. Stir in turkey; cook 2 minutes. Add mushrooms, zucchini, and garlic; sauté 2 minutes or until mushrooms are tender, stirring frequently. Add remaining marinara sauce; reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes.

4. Arrange 9 polenta slices over marinara in baking dish, and top evenly with half of vegetable mixture. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of cheese over vegetable mixture; arrange remaining polenta over cheese. Top polenta with the remaining vegetable mixture, and sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup cheese.

5. Cover and bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes or until bubbly. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

wine. Tasting a wine always begins with your eyes. Hold the glass up against something white. If it’s a white wine, it should be transparent and a red wine should be translucent and bright.

SWIRLING the glass of wine mixes it with oxygen and

releases the aromas that have been trapped in the tightly corked bottle. Wines with high levels of alcohol will leave “legs” streaming down the sides of the glass .The legs will quickly disappear with lower alcohol wines.

Now that you have swirled, stick your nose in and SNIFF! What aromas come to mind? Do you detect juicy blackberries or strawberries bringing back memories of the summer? How about the mouthwatering aromas of a freshly cut lemon or grapefruit? Have you ever thought of a leather jacket, pipe smoke,cinnamon or vanilla when you smelled a red wine from France or California? You wouldn’t be crazy if you could swear you smelled earthy mushrooms or a musty smell that evoked memories of grandma’s attic or a pile of wet leaves. Aromas from a young,vibrant wine will be different from a more mature wine. From a burst of fresh, juicy berries of summer to more subtle secondary aromas that will be more complex.

SIP! Let the wine flow over your palate. Do you like a fullbodied wine or a light bodied wine? Think of skim milk vs whole milk or cream. Does it quickly disappear or does it linger in your mouth and coat your tongue. If you’re still enjoying the flavors for a few minutes after that sip, your likely experiencing a wine with a long finish. Cheers!

Secondly, many times the most important factor to many people is what does the company charge to perform the sale? Your first inclination may be to take the lowest bidder if estate sale companies are competing for your business. Similarly to choosing a contractor to work on your home, you don’t necessarily want the company willing to work the cheapest to take on the task of liquidating the cherished belongings of a loved one. The consequences of hiring a cheap and inexperienced company will often be felt after it is too late. By and large, you will want to look for an established company with lots of experience and a great reputation. Fees may range anywhere between 25 - 40% of the total proceeds of the sale. Beware of any company that charges you by the hour for sale preparation or requires you to pay for any advertising. The Comeback of Yard Long Prints and Photographs

A

lthough anything with value, intrinsic or monetary, has often been reproduced (since beautiful things were determined to have competitive value), the reproductions of the last forty years have a great impact on the value of our personal property. In the early 1970s, I worked at an antique mall in Murfreesboro, and sold American antiques at the Nashville Flea Market. Yard long prints from the late 1800s were among the best sellers. Hung both vertically and horizontally, they had rich colors, and most were framed.

Collectors were inspired to get the good ones while they could before they were overtaken by impostors. Fearing empty spaces on walls (it was the 1970s after all), buyers of reproductions bought multiples of many prints. The cost of reproductions was so low, it seemed like a good idea to stock-up on items in all the colors or styles so that their daughters and granddaughters could have one, too. These were good times for sellers.
