Yoga, considered lunatic fringe in the 60s, is a lifestyle for many today

By Jenni Hargrove Gayle (G.G.) Goad, Teenie Fearheiley and Linda Haner Leach became longtime friends after meeting in a yoga class in the 1960s. At the time, yoga was considered taboo and not readily practiced in public places. Today, Goad is an instructor for yoga and other fitness classes at FiftyForward Knowles where she gently leads adults 50 and older in the practice of yoga to improve strength and flexibility (and can occasionally be caught turning cartwheels or doing the splits in the hallway).

Fearheiley (82), Goad (77), and Leach (74) are still able to perform the basic yoga poses without much trouble, even if they aren’t standing on their heads anymore. Although their fifty-two-year friendship began in 1965 when yoga was still new here, they now practice without fear of judgment as members of the local nonprofit FiftyForward.

Their first encounter with yoga was led by Music City’s premier yoga instructor, Roy Scoggins, who became a local legend when

called Forever Young, Forever Healthy by Indra Devi (Prentice-Hall, 1953). In a 1965 interview, he said he “began working alone, since in 1960 yoga was really [considered part of] the lunatic fringe.” The combined benefits from Mensendieck’s exercises and yoga helped Scoggins become more flexible and stronger over time, and he told The Tennessean in November 1965 that his miraculous physical recovery was due to yoga. The YMCA in Nashville asked Scoggins to teach yoga, and even gave him their annual Man of the Year award for his work.

Fearheiley heard about the class through her husband who worked at The Baptist Sunday School board with Scoggins. Leach also worked with Scoggins as an editorial assistant right after she graduated from college. Goad remembers seeing a photo in the newspaper that attracted her. She thought, “I have always wanted to be in the circus and I think this is as close as I’m ever going to get!”

The women enjoyed the class mainly for its physical benefits and the relaxed, vibrant feeling they experienced after each session and fondly remember their early practice of yoga while in Scoggins’s class. They would practice at home in between sessions, and Fearheiley even remembers her husband would always practice at the office around noon. “Everyone just assumed he was eating his lunch,” she said. “One day, a girl in the office knocked and he said, ‘Come in!’ She saw him in there standing on his head,” Fearheiley recalls. They recommended he try out some therapeutic exercises that had been developed by Bess Mensendieck, which they believed would provide some relief.

Unfortunately, at the time not everyone understood the concept of yoga— many conservative religious groups frowned upon its practice because they considered it a religion and in conflict with the conservative fundamentalist teachings. The YMCA had to change the class’s name from “yoga class” to “flexibility class” to avoid stirring up controversy during a period of time. Goad’s church even believed yoga was an Eastern religion, and their harsh judgment induced her to burn all her yoga books in a bonfire behind

her house and avoid the exercises for thirtyfive years.

The women remember the attitude toward yoga beginning to shift about fifteen years ago.

As travel gradually became more accessible and common all over the world, newcomers to America began educating everyone on new ideas and practices. Fearheiley and her friends continued on page 12

Expanding our reach and care services to older adults and caregivers

By Gretchen Funk, associate executive director FiftyForward Supportive Care Services On a beautiful Saturday morning in August, six families brought their older adult loved ones to FiftyForward Knowles for the first in a series of Super Special Saturdays. Supported by funding from the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, Super Special Saturdays are designed to offer additional respite to family caregivers and a special experience for participants. FiftyForward is piloting Super Special Saturdays with participants from our Adult Day Services program (ADS) located in Green Hills.

On weekdays at ADS, older adults with cognitive and/or physical impairments benefit from engaging, interactive programming while their family members go to work or take care of other business knowing their loved one is safe and supported. This weekday ADS program is essential for families who wish to have their loved ones live with them but must also maintain employment and attend to other responsibilities. Studies demonstrate that while this type of caregiver support is a must for families, it is also important to offer additional options to prevent caregiver burnout and in order for caregivers to be able to live full, meaningful lives, beyond just attending to the necessities.

Our first Super Special Saturday was a success.

One couple with a mother in her 90s who lives with them was able to relax, have fun, and spend some time to devote to their own relationship. A man whose motherin-law lives with his family was able to go golfing, a pastime he very much enjoys but has little time for now.

The Super Special Adult Day Services welcomed several new Saturday attendees participants to its Super Special Saturday program. themselves enjoyed breakfast and lunch together, talked about music they love, played a rousing game of bingo and were treated to a beautiful “Saturday afternoon drive” in one of FiftyForward’s fully accessible buses. At the end of the day, all involved expressed appreciation for a day well spent.

As the wave of Baby Boomers swells and the prevalence of dementia and other cognitive impairments in older adults continues, we will all benefit from a range of solutions to support families. For families able to offer a home to their older adult loved ones, alternatives like Adult Day Services and Super Special Saturdays will be an important part of the solution.

FiftyForward RSVP launches the power brigade to bring the healing power of flowers to older adults

Volunteers are invited to join the FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Flower Power Brigade, a group of volunteers who gather each Tuesday morning to arrange donated flowers that are then delivered to clients served by FiftyForward and RSVP partner programs.

The recently formed volunteer effort is the brainchild of Joan Shannon, RN, MS, a Nashville native and committed community volunteer.

Since 2013, Joan and two like-minded friends have been recycling and delivering donated past-sell date flowers from Trader Joe’s. Funds from Metro and State government enhance opportunities for older adults across our community We are grateful to Metropolitan and Nashville Davidson County and Tennessee State government for recent funding that was allocated to increase programs and resources to benefit older adults in our community.

As the Baby Boomer population continues to increase exponentially, the need for programs and services has never been more critical.

Metro Nashville funding

In late June, the Metropolitan Nashville Council approved a $2.2 billion budget which included $30,000 for each of the five FiftyForward lifelong learning centers in Davidson County.

The funds will be used at our centers to positively impact the lives of older adults in our community through programming and services. In Metropolitan Nashville, the funds will support FiftyForward Bordeaux, FiftyForward Donelson Station, FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center, FiftyForward Knowles, and FiftyForward Madison Station.

There are many people to thank for helping us secure this funding including countless board members, FiftyForward teammates, volunteers, center members and other FiftyForward supporters who took the time to contact members of the Metro Council to reinforce our need for funding.

And thanks to Mayor Barry and Councilman John Cooper, Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee, for their support to include funding for FiftyForward in the Metro Budget prior Dr. Jocelyn Briddell, director of active aging at to approval by the full FiftyForward (L) and Janet Jernigan, executive director of FiftyForward (R) celebrate funding with Council.

In addition to the Davidson County centers listed above, our two centers in Williamson County -- FiftyForward Martin Center and FiftyForward College Grove – will also receive funding.

Special thanks to House Finance Committee Chair Representative Charles Sargent for his leadership in sponsoring the budget amendment in the House and to Senator Dr. Steve Dickerson for his sponsorship in the State Senate. Representative Brenda Gilmore also played an important role by getting the Davidson County Delegation to sign on to sponsor the amendment as well as gaining the support from Speaker Beth Harwell.

How does FiftyForward impact the lives of older adults in the community?

For 61 years, FiftyForward has supported healthy aging and assisted vulnerable seniors to age in place. Committed and compassionate staff, volunteers and partners form a powerful team that positively impacts more than 20,000 senior adults, children and families annually. As the “go to” agency for older adults since 1956, FiftyForward supports, champions and enhances life for those 50 and older by providing vast opportunities that are not available elsewhere through one membership.

The National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) has accredited five of the FiftyForward seven lifelong learning centers. Only 1% of centers nationwide have this accreditation. In addition, FiftyForward provides supportive services in the areas of care management, Meals on Wheels, crimes committed against older adults, a conservatorship program, and tutoring for children by older adults.

A special thank you to Council member Nancy VanReece for leading this effort. She and Council member Scott Davis stepped up with amendments to include FiftyForward during budget committee deliberations. Councilmember Kevin Rhoten also played a key role in this effort.

It is interesting to note that our research revealed that senior centers across the state, with the exception of the FiftyForward centers in Davidson County, were receiving financial operating support from local government. Thanks to community support and advocates, we are now among those who do receive operating support from our local government. We are so very appreciative.

State of Tennessee funding

The State of Tennessee also recently allocated $350,000 for the seven FiftyForward lifelong learning centers in Middle Tennessee. This funding of $50,000 to each center will be used to support operations as well as expanded programming.

Student engagement pays dividends today and in the future

By Robin Johnson Director of Volunteer Engagement FiftyForward has a longstanding reputation in Davidson and Williamson counties as the “goto” resource for older adults – whether they are seeking engagement, resources or to define their second chapters.

What might surprise many is the important role FiftyForward also plays in engaging, educating and mentoring area students.

FiftyForward is an active participant in Nashville Mayor Megan Barry’s Opportunity NOW initiative, which employs Davidson County high school students in summer jobs. Additionally, FiftyForward engages and benefits from the services of dozens of students who complete community service hours for the Tennessee Promise college scholarship program, and offers placement opportunities for interns from area colleges and universities.

The most recent interns placed with FiftyForward were six students assigned to our centers and programs through Opportunity NOW. Zairious, Thomas, Nia, Manal, Ty’la and Breanna were immediately welcome additions to the FiftyForward family and collectively served in seven different locations where they interacted with staff and older adults.

The members loved her enthusiasm and she learned not to underestimate the strength and conditioning of a group of dedicated older adults.

Thomas Thompson became an adopted grandson to the doting members of the FiftyForward Bordeaux. Each day, Thomas assisted with programming, meals and dayto-day routines. Students in the Tennessee Promise program must complete eight hours of community service each semester in order to remain eligible for free tuition to a participating community college. FiftyForward has been the beneficiary of the time and talent of dozens of students who have done everything from volunteering at Viva la Diva, a 5K and 10K event held each fall (vivaladivarun.org), to setting up for FiftyForward fundraisers and assisting with our popular digital literacy classes.

Students in advanced degree programs at area colleges and universities are another group of young people who help FiftyForward enhance services while also preparing the young adults for future professional opportunities.

Former FiftyForward interns are now employed at many Middle Tennessee businesses serving older adults. Justin Hammond completed a Master’s level social work internship at FiftyForward a few years ago and reports, “I learned so much about the needs of older adults as they age and now in my role as Care Coordinator at Always Best Care, I am able to implement my knowledge and skills in serving our senior clients better.”

Students in health related fields are not the only ones who engage with FiftyForward programs. Belmont Assistant Professor of Management Beth Woodard led a team of Massey Business School students who assisted FiftyForward in the strategic planning process: “FiftyForward offered my MGT 4960-Strategic Management students an invaluable experience.

Veterans Day Celebration with Gary Slaughter Thursday Lunch Program: Nov. 9, 11:30 a.m.

Gary Slaughter, author of Sea Stories: A Memoir of a Naval Officer (19561967), will be the speaker for our Veterans Day Celebration. Among the 60 vignettes in his book is the story of “Black Saturday,” Oct. 27, 1963, when the USS Cony, an American destroyer, surfaced and confronted B-59, a Soviet submarine that had crossed the Quarantine Line during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Just twenty-three years old at the time, Navy Ensign Slaughter was the only officer on Cony trained to communicate with the B-59’s Russian Captain Vitali Savitsky. His objective was to dissuade Savitsky from launching his torpedo which was tipped with a 15-kiloton nuclear device. Gary will discuss this incredible true event along with other stories that depict his varied and rich Navy life.

This year’s Martin Masters Art Show and Sale offers more than 500 original works For one fall weekend, the FiftyForward Martin Center will be transformed into an art gallery displaying over 500 original works of art by more than 40 local and regional professional artists including this year’s featured artist Frank Baggett.

The 12th annual Martin Masters event, a fine art show and sale will be held Oct. 20 and 21 at FiftyForward Martin Center (960 Heritage Way, Brentwood, 37027). The show is free and open to the public.

At the event’s opening reception, Friday, Oct.20 from 5 - 8 p.m., attendees will enjoy lively music, hors d’oeuvres and wine sponsored

This year’s featured artist, Frank Baggett, is known nationally as a successful landscape and wildlife artist with more than 50 years of experience. In 2015, Frank was honored to become a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society. Reflecting on some of today’s trends, the trio feels that the younger generation is not tied to conservative churches like they were. Today’s youth are more open to everything, and meditation is more popular now. Scoggins classes focused on the basic concept of meditation without tying it to the exercises very often. Leach recalls that outside of class, she “began educating herself a little more by reading about the mind and spiritual benefits that could meld with the physical benefits.” In addition, she said, “I didn’t have a private office door, so I wasn’t able to do headstands on my lunch hour like Roy could; but I could easily practice the discipline at home.”

The women also acknowledged that the next generational shift taking place is young adults being wedded to their electronic devices. They shared concerns that all of today’s communication through text messages (and little conversation) along with all the new methods of online shopping are making young adults more isolated.

The good news they see in the today’s youth is the feeling of empathy and community they are witnessing in the younger generation. “We see young people who are smart and [who} understand we have to do better and help those who can’t help themselves,” said Fearheiley.

Whether standing on their heads or leading with their hearts, it’s no doubt yoga will have this next generation practicing and sharing well into the future.

FiftyForward Firsts: Uber, passports, coffee cupping among new firsts

Have you tried something NEW lately?

In the last few months we’ve had several members share their FiftyForward Firsts. A “first” is something you’ve always wanted to do or try. Members of the FiftyForward community are trying new classes, testing out new skills, traveling to new places, and taking chances on things large and small. It’s a chance to stretch out of your comfort zone and try something new. Here are some of the ways members have embraced a “FiftyForward First.”

Coffee “cupping” Several months ago, after a trip to a coffee tasting, FiftyForward J. L. Turner center member Dawn Formosa, decided to experiment and host her own “coffee cupping.” “Coffee cupping” is the practice of observing the aromas and tastes of brewed coffee. First Uber ride Sometimes you need a ride and it can be scary to ask for one, but FiftyForward Martin Center member Camille recently booked her first Uber ride and declared it a success! Many car services have phone apps that make ordering a ride easy and convenient.

The students interviewed employees, attended Board Meetings and several Strategic Resource Group meetings that occurred in conjunction with the Strategic Planning Process the organization was undertaking. They got to see how a nonprofit undertakes such a task in real time.

They also were required to make recommendations to the organization going three to five years into the future. Their final projects were presented to a group of employees and FiftyForward Board members.

From the student’s perspective, they were very grateful to FiftyForward for allowing them access to the centers, as well as being able to sit in and observe the fact finding and data collection that went into the current organizational strategic plan. I was amazed that some of the work and observations the students made was referenced recently in a meeting with organizational leadership. It was truly a win-win experience.”

Engaging students in order to better serve older adults and to help young people better understand both the joys and challenges of the aging process is central to the FiftyForward mission. It is also just one of the many ways that FiftyForward has been enhancing the community for 61 years.

Celebrate senior athletes Tennessee senior athletes run for their lives and their health as they compete in national and statewide competitions earlier this summer Could we be prouder of our Tennessee athletes?

Tennessee Senior Olympians not only won the overall medal count at the recent National Senior Games (the Senior Olympics) held June 2-15 in Birmingham, Alabama; we also had the greatest number of competitors from any state, with approximately 1,100 Tennesseans competing.

Not only did our Executive Director Janet Jernigan compete in many events, she earned ribbons in two events Saturday (10K and 800 meter races where she placed 5th in her age group and 7th respectively.) In addition, she received two bronze medals. The first was in the 4x100 medley as part of the Dashing Divas, which she so aptly named, and the second bronze was in the 1500 meters. In addition, Gayle Goad, our yoga instructor (see story page 3) was there to compete in the Badminton competition.

It’s Just Stuff! by Connie Sue Davenport

Colonial Revival Furniture still treasured by many collectors In the 1970s, you and I were buying round oak tables, Victorian Revival parlor suites, and cannon ball beds. Pie safes and “country” items filled our suburban ranch houses and there was a painted metal milk can on every porch.

These were the antiques that reminded us of our grandparents and they were all made in the mid to late 1800s by hand. Most furniture was made with only the tools and materials available within a short wagon ride. We called them antiques, because they were more than 100 years old.

Antique furniture that was made one hundred years ago is called Colonial Revival, and was produced from 1870 - 1940. It was manufactured, sold through catalogs, delivered to a nearby train depot, or shuttled to the house from a local store. Inspired by the U.S. Centennial in 1876, furniture styles from the first one hundred years of our history were copied with the help of steam power and workers aplenty.

In the early years of the Colonial Revival period, before 1900, much of the manufactured furniture was produced slowly, piece by piece, imitations replicating the earlier American styles of Queen Ann, Chippendale, Federal and Empire periods. After World War I as production became more mechanized and the work force increased even more, top-of-the-line and economy furniture was introduced.

Many of us have Colonial Revival pieces in our homes today. Three readers have sent pictures of furniture they treasure and want to learn more about.

Mary, from Hendersonville, sent a picture of her parent’s gate-leg table. She remembers seeing it in the house in the 1950s. The long leaves come up and are supported by intricately turned legs. The center section is boxed with four additional legs. Here’s the quirky part: the top pulls apart and there’s an additional leaf inside.

The hidden leaf trick indicates late Colonial Revival. It would sell between $100 - $275.

Two readers sent pictures of Colonial Revival chairs. Suzanne, in Nashville, wrote to me about a family chair her mother received around 1930. It fits into a corner and has open arms supported by a row of simple spindles that remind me of Windsor chairs. But the feathers and plume on the back splat are from a more flashy era altogether. Colonial Revival styles often borrow style components from various periods. She describes the chair as quite heavy. It is most likely mahogany and might sell for $75 - $100.

Another Colonial Revival chair was sent by Geneva in Shelbyville. She bought it at auction in 1987 for $125. Her chair is sweet and feminine. It has a stylized heart-shaped back, a cinched waist and cabriole legs. It is the earliest of the three pieces, circa 1900. It might bring from $85 - $120. I sometimes see this chair with mother of pearl inlay on the back.

These two chairs and the gate-leg table appear to be in excellent condition. Typically, Colonial Revival is well made with hardwoods and if cared for, lasts a few lifetimes. It is a buyer’s market, however, for this period of furniture.

Sellers talk of quality and age. Young buyers are thinking about which color paint they might use to kick up the dark woods a bit.
