5th Annual Viva la Diva Run benefiting FiftyForward to be held at Nissan North America on Saturday, Nov. 21 “Viva la Diva marked my FiftyForward First* last year,” said Joan who is also a part-time caregiver for her 95-year old father. “I know firsthand the critical care and resources FiftyForward provides whether for my dad, siblings, neighbors or friends.

“When I got involved in Viva la Diva I did it for my own health benefit, now it is benefiting others in the community as well,” she adds.

FiftyForward recently welcomed Lauren Angulo to the staff as the director of Victory Over Crime. We asked Lauren a few questions to get to know her.

1. Why did you join FiftyForward?

I worked for the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) for almost eight (8) years as a parole officer. While working in that capacity, I often interacted with the victims of my parolees. My conversations with the victims were eye opening on so many levels. I failed to realize how deep the scars go and how little support the victims felt; however, that reality now is very clear to me.

Through ADS, family caregivers can continue to work, gain support and receive assistance locating other help.

In fact, in 2011, my home was burglarized — knowing someone had broken into my “safe place” made me sick to my stomach. After that, I was determined to better educate myself on how I could be “smarter than the criminal.” I joined FiftyForward as the Victory Over Crime director because I believe in educating, empowering, encouraging, and assisting those who have been victimized, just like I was. Now I am in the perfect spot to help others.

2. What special skills do you bring to the agency/community?

My specialized education and work experiences in the Criminal Justice field are skills I use daily. In addition, the countless trainings and seminars I attend ensure I am current on new trends in criminal behavior, statutes under which criminals are prosecuted, and the court procedure. Without a doubt this knowledge and training will better serve our older adult victims so they may be confident in the system and in the assistance available to them especially through our Victory Over Crime program.

3. How do you achieve work/life balance?

My family and I really enjoy eating dinner together and just talking about our day. I also enjoy watching the TV series BIG BROTHER with my 6-yearold – we always cheer on different people!

4. Nashville has been called the “It” city as well as one of the best cities for a date night for “seniors” – where is your favorite place to hang out in Nashville?

My husband and I really enjoy going to JB’s Pour House in Hermitage. They have the best hot wings and great happy hour specials! Did I mention during the weekend brunch you can order a DONUT CHEESEBURGER? 5. FiftyForward is committed to lifelong learning and in support of this we advocate learning and trying new things, we call them “FiftyForward Firsts.” What’s on your list to do for the “first time?”

Realistic First: I want to learn how to “eat clean” and prepare more natural foods and meals.

Unrealistic First: I’d love to attend a Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburg Steelers game in Baltimore — and have the pleasures of enjoying the game from a comfy skybox!

Finding the right caregiver by asking the right questions

By Adrienne Newman Associate Executive Director, FiftyForward One of the most difficult tasks caregivers face is hiring in-home help. While many people find comfort by being in their home, some individuals or families may find opening their homes and lives to others very intimidating.

Whether you are interviewing an agency or an individual, below are some basic questions that any home care provider should be asked during an interview. These include: •

Are you licensed, bonded and insured?

•

What is the method of payment for the service?

•

How do you resolve complaints?

Using the acronym CAREGIVER will provide some additional guidance in deciding whom to hire and in monitoring the “right” person or agency.

C stands for communication. You and the paid caregiver must be able to talk about anything that makes either of you happy or uncomfortable. Openly discussing issues and concerns is the basis for strong, successful relationships.

A is for agile. As a family or paid caregiver, being agile – able to change direction at any time – is very important. While it would be great to start and finish a task (like laundry), sometimes a care recipient needs to talk about their feelings. Making communication a priority promotes good will and it helps with cooperation in accomplishing other needed tasks.

V represents valued. Carefully choose the tasks that you want done by a paid caregiver. Have them complete tasks that you are unable to do or don’t have time to complete. Then you can concentrate on valuable time with your loved one that is personal and meaningful such as reminiscing, cooking or even washing and styling hair.

R is for respect which leads to rapport. Individuals who are receiving care E stands for expectations. Providing them with extra money, allowing them to take possessions or viewing them as a confidant crosses a line. Gifts of minimal value on holidays or birthdays are a nice gesture, but they are not required.

Volunteer opportunities

RSVP volunteers join USO in supporting new recruits Each day, dozens of enthusiastic, and slightly anxious recruits arrive at Nashville’s Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) with families in tow, ready to take their oath and transition to military life. As these new military service men and women leave their families to embark on basic training they welcome the support and guidance of a unique set of volunteers who serve as part of the USO’s presence at the MEPS facility.

Tom Clifford is among the retired military members who serve as greeters at the USO’s Center at MEPS. In his role he provides a warm welcome to new recruits and their families, answers questions about military life and educates the families about the services that the USO provides. Tom and the other USO MEPS volunteers are also on hand to lend a listening ear as families share their At Nashville’s Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS), new recruits take their Tom Clifford USO MEPS volunteer concerns and he reassures newly oaths to serve our country. In addition to the MEPS volunteer opportunity, RSVP and the USO continue to recruit volunteers for the Airport Welcome Center program.

This group of volunteers is stationed at the USO Welcome Center at the Nashville International Airport and serves as greeters who welcome active duty and retired military members as they travel through Nashville International Airport.

FiftyForward RSVP is working with the USO to recruit volunteers to serve as MEPS greeters. Volunteers are needed to serve Monday through Friday in four hour shifts in either the morning or afternoon. The MEPS Center is located at 20 Bridgestone Park in the Donelson area just off of Briley Parkway. All MEPS volunteers must undergo a background check and complete USO training sessions. The FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is a division of Senior Corps, the Corporation for National and Community Service’s volunteer engagement program for adults age 55 and over. In addition to funding from the Corporation, FiftyForward RSVP receives generous support from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, the Dan and Margaret Maddox Charitable Fund, HCA, Ingram Industries, and the United Way of Williamson County.

Nashville Mayoral race is a runoff; early voting begins Sept. 1

Both Medicare and Medicaid recently celebrated their 50th anniversaries. On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed legislation that established these two programs.

Davidson County voters turned out on election day, Aug. 6, and a number of races resulted in runoff elections that will be decided on Thursday, Sept. 10.

Megan Barry and David A. Fox are Davidson County mayoral candidates. Ten candidates including many current council members who were term-limited are in the runoff for five At-Large Metropolitan Council seats. They are: Councilwoman Karen Bennett, Erin Coleman, John Cooper, Councilman Robert Duvall, Councilwoman Erica Gilmore, Councilman Jason Holleman, Sharon W. Hurt, Councilman Lonnell Matthews Jr., Bob Mendes and Jim Shulman. Eight Metropolitan Council Districts each have two candidates in the runoff.

District 1 candidates are Loniel Greene Jr. and Nick Leonardo. DeCosta Hastings and Robert “Bobby” Stockard will face off in District 2. In District 3, Terry Clayton and Brenda H. Haywood are on the ballot. For District 5, the candidates are Scott Davis and Sarah Martin. District 8 has Chris Swann and Nancy Van Reece vying for the seat. District 13 includes Mark Cole and Holly Huezo. The candidates for District 17 are Paula D. Foster and Colby Sledge. In District 20, Marisa Frank and Mary Carolyn Roberts are the two candidates.

Write-in candidates are also permitted for each office.

Special feature Honoring our military

An honor to meet and recognize those who serve

By Stephanie Schiraldi A group of FiftyForward members was able to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity during a ceremony at Lipscomb University.

Two of the 79 living Medal of Honor recipients were honored at the event and had the opportunity to tell their stories of bravery as part of Nashville Salutes, a three-day tribute organized by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.

“It’s hard to believe when looking at them what they’ve been through – it seems impossible,” said FiftyForward member Michelina Lenker. “This is a wonderful country and it’s sad, but freedom is not free.”

Lieutenant Tom Kelley of the U.S. Navy and 1st Lieutenant Brian Thacker of the U.S. Army both served in the Vietnam War. Kelley was awarded the Medal of Honor for maneuvering his ship into the line of fire to allow the other ships to retreat, resulting in an enemy rocket scoring a direct hit and causing a severe head wound for Kelley. Despite the injury, Kelley continued to direct the other ships and provide commands to his men during the attack.

Thacker received his medal after staying behind to provide cover fire while his men escaped, leaving him wounded and unable to escape. Thacker remained hidden in a bamboo thicket behind enemy lines for eight days with no food or water before he was able to crawl back to safety.

Lenker said it was quite an honor to be able to meet these two men after hearing about their experiences. Lenker’s husband also served in the military and through the years the two have traveled to several military cemeteries in New York, Normandy and Germany.

“When you’ve been in those cemeteries and see the miles of crosses, we’re proud to be an American, but it’s been a big sacrifice,” said Lenker. “I think the country has to do a lot more for our veterans and their families.”

Next month, the nation will mark the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Since that time, Sept. 11 has been designated a National Day of Service and Remembrance by the 2009 Kennedy Serve America Act. This effort engages thousands of Americans across the country in volunteer service.

As in many cities across the country, Nashvillians will join together and participate in volunteer service projects to pay tribute and honor the memory of 9/11 victims and heroes.

This year, FiftyForward RSVP and the USO will sponsor a “Fill the Truck” event at participating Kroger store locations in Davidson and Williamson counties. Volunteers are needed to hand out donation suggestion flyers, collect donations of non-perishable snacks and food items to “fill the truck” for our country’s men and women serving in the military.

Hats Off to Bordeaux!

For six consecutive years, State Representative Brenda Gilmore has put her heart and soul into supporting a community that she cherishes. This year she again hosted the Sixth Annual Hats Off to Bordeaux! and was joined by community supporter and NewsChannel 5 meteorologist and Talk of the Town co-host Lelan Statom.

Hats Off to Bordeaux! was held Friday, June 19, 2015 at the FiftyForward Patricia Hart Building (174 Rains Avenue, 37203). The event began with a reception and silent auction at 11 a.m. followed by a luncheon and hat fashion show.

New FiftyForward board member, Courtney Caldwell Crants, represented SunTrust well with a fun swirl down the runway.

FiftyForward Bordeaux member Jimmy Keene walked the runway looking quite dapper.

The day’s program also highlights the volunteer efforts at FiftyForward Bordeaux, including honoring the Bordeaux Volunteer of the Year.

This year’s honoree is Carolyn Hall.

Hall works tirelessly as a volunteer: greeting guests, serving lunch, accompanying staff on daytrips; leading games and other activities.

The highlight of the event is the festive hat fashion show where center members, community leaders and FiftyForward board members get to strut, shimmy and show off their best runway walks. The crowd is always enthusiastic to see the personalities of our runway models.

In Memoriam We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of J. D. Elliott, president of The Memorial Foundation. We mourn the loss of this wonderful community advocate, friend and supporter. Elliott was a member of FiftyForward’s Advisory Council and one of the architects of Whistlestop, FiftyForward Madison Station’s signature fundraiser. Each year he and his lovely wife, Anita, would attend Whistlestop dressing the part of train engineers.

Katie Griffith, FiftyForward Care Team social worker, is retiring at the end of September.

For more than 19 years, she has been devoted to FiftyForward by assisting frail, homebound older adults and their caregivers to meet basic needs and improve their quality of life. Katie has held many titles at FiftyForward through the years and her tireless work has benefited countless families, colleagues and older adults.

At the FiftyForward annual staff retreat In 2013, she was honored with the Fran Mazzaferro Award for her outstanding work and leadership.

We wish her well and salute her dedication to social work and her commitment to our community.

Ways to Give Back GIVING BACK

One good turn deserves another

Sometimes the simple act of giving something away can have a domino effect into action -- one good turn of goodwill sets off several subsequent turns for the better. At FiftyForward we are fortunate to see this in action all through the year, but when it happens, it still plucks the heartstrings and makes us humble.

For two years now, FiftyForward Meals on Wheels (MOW) clients have been the lucky recipients of a national Teleflora campaign called Make Someone Smile®. Our local partner in this campaign, Rebel Hill Florist, led by the effervescent Kathy Bates, championed this effort of delivering a cheery mug and plant for each MOW client. MOW volunteers delivered meals that day with an extra dose of cheer.

During our delivery of meals and fresh fruit, we visited with MOW client Ellen Willis. She recounted that one of her deliverers, Nashville songwriter and 20+ year MOW volunteer, Barry Coggins, often takes time to visit with her and they sing songs together. She even shared a song with us! The meals nourish the body and the MOW volunteers help nourish the soul.

During the same day we received the Make Someone Smile® delivery, we also were the recipients of another food donation. Local (L-R) Kristy Ripmaster, marketing business, TBHC Delivers, stopped by to drop off director of Edible Arrangments a donation of supplies for our food pantry to poses with FiftyForward Meals on feed homebound individuals in our community.

This bounty helps provide food stuffs to those who would likely do without because of limited income and difficulty accessing groceries.

This community support is greatly appreciated and welcome as more community needs become apparent.

What you need to know...

about flu and pneumonia vaccines

It’s vaccination time and although many of us rely on the expertise of our primary care professional, below are some frequently asked questions about vaccinations that may prove helpful to you.

Which is more important: the flu shot or pneumonia shot? Are they similar?

Both vaccines are incredibly important and for very different reasons. The flu shot is for influenza, which is a viral infection most common in winter months.

The flu shot must be administered every year for protection. Pneumonia vaccinations are vaccines administered to give your body protection against one of the most common and lethal forms of pneumonia (caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumonia). Although pneumonia can often follow influenza because of weakened defenses, the two infections are not at all related so both vaccinations are important, especially for older adults.

I got the flu from the flu shot so I really don’t want to take it again. (That happens, right?)

Actually, the flu shot is not a living vaccination, i.e. the influenza particles in the vaccination are not living so they can’t come back to life and cause flu.

Because normal actions of the body’s immune system are what cause many symptoms of infection (mild fatigue, aches, or other symptoms may occur after the vaccination). These mild and short-lived side effects are minor compared with the symptoms and effects of the flu. Influenza is NOT a “cold” and not something to take lightly. Ninety percent of deaths (thousands each year) in the U.S. from influenza occur in people age 65 and older. Approximately 250,000 people are hospitalized every year related to infection with influenza!

I already received one pneumonia vaccination; now my physician says I need another.

Discuss your situation with your physician. Within the past year, new guidelines were released for pneumonia vaccinations and now the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends two separate vaccinations be administered to adults over 65 years of age to protect from this potentially fatal infection. The two vaccinations cover different strains of the bacteria-- the PPSV 23 covers 23 strains and the PCV 13 covers an additional 13 strains! If you haven’t already, plan to speak with your physician about the pneumonia vaccination at your annual well care visit. The pneumonia bacteria may also cause other infections such as meningitis, heart valve infections, or bloodstream infections (sepsis), all of which can be fatal.

It seems they always say the flu shot isn’t working as well as expected. Why is 16 | Forward Focus

that? Why would it work better one year than another?

The flu vaccination is produced to fight the most common and deadly strains that are predicted for each specific year. Because the “strains” or varieties of influenza in the community change yearly, you might be able to compare this to a “weather report” where the predictions for the weather are the best prediction possible, but sometimes things occur that forecasters don’t expect! Influenza can do the same thing. It can change between the time of the “forecast” and the time the flu shot is produced and delivered across the nation.

Who shouldn’t get the flu vaccine?

People who have had severe allergies after a prior dose of flu vaccine, or who have allergies to any part of the vaccination, should not receive the vaccination.

Most flu vaccines contain a small amount of egg protein. People with a history of Guillain-Barre’ Syndrome or who have a mild illness at the time of injection should discuss with their physician prior to receiving the vaccination.

Is the flu shot guaranteed to work?

No, because of reasons above, the flu shot gives definite added protection from a

potentially deadly infection but is not effective against every strain or in every person. One thing is for certain -- the flu shot helps add protection against a common and dangerous infection you can guarantee will be in the community every year (and is most dangerous to those over 65)!

Does it matter where I get the flu shot this year?

All flu shots come from the same manufacturers regardless of where they are administered. Whether received at a health fair, your physician’s office, or a local retail pharmacy/supermarket, the important thing is making sure you receive the vaccinations. We’re very fortunate to have access to these important vaccinations in such a variety of locations. * To clarify , we use the term pneumonia vaccines but you may also hear “pneumococcal vaccine” (they both reply to the same vaccinations).

It’s Just Stuff!

Vintage Western Flyers--still cool and still holding value to produce bikes, and in the 1930s Western Auto began carrying a full line of models for boys and girls.

I remember going to Madison Square shopping center for my first bicycle with gears. Although I remember what I was wearing, I can’t recall the year (which is probably for the best, I suppose). My three-speed bike was sharp, blue, and

Is your home working for or against you as you age?

A few tweaks can make all the difference.

All Western Flyer bicycles made between 1930 and 1950 are quick to sell at the right price. A pristine, never-been-on-the-road, model can bring more than $2,000. A rusted, but complete, bicycle called a ‘barn find’ could sell for $700.

The popularity of restoring old bikes has even generated competitive prices for original parts and paperwork.

Your bicycle, Judy, was made circa 1985 as a Special Edition Western Flyer. The original had more chrome and detail, and considerably more weight. Perfect specimens of your reproduction, though, sell from $450 to $650. The rust that’s taken root on your stepdad’s bike will lower the value somewhat, but I’d start the conversation just less than $500 if you decide to sell.

Many of us have old bicycles in our attic, garage or basement. If you’re curious about their value, enter the make and model in SOLD listings on eBay.com. If it isn’t a popular model, consider selling parts of the whole as decorative items. The value of gears, pedals, seats, and headlamps might surprise you.

In the spirit of re-purposing, rusted bicycles without tires are being used as a point of interest in yards, often with a basket filled with potted plants. Here’s to finding value and purpose for all things old and new.
