Kimberly Williams-Paisley shares her family’s journey to cope with her mother’s dementia

Every 3 seconds someone in the world develops dementia. According the Alzheimer’s Association more than 5 million Americans, and 47 million people across the world are living with Alzheimer’s disease today.

Actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley (Father of the Bride I and II, Nashville) knows firsthand about the disease. In 2016, it claimed the life of her mother. Linda Williams was diagnosed at 62 with a rare and incurable form of early onset dementia called primary progressive aphasia. Their family’s journey is illuminating.

In Williams-Paisley’s book Where the Light Gets In she sets the stage to enlighten others about the disease and to serve as guide for the many families navigating these new waters.

“I did not want this to be a dark story. I wanted it to be positive with uplifting moments, lightness and humor,” she said, recalling how her mother had been such a dynamic influence at home and in her professional life. Williams-Paisley told of many times in her childhood – when things did not go the way they had planned – and her mother would offer inspiration by saying, “It’ll be a good story one day.”

Linda was a successful business woman who in her early career worked for Newsday and later as a foreign correspondent. She later became a fundraiser including working for the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Today, Williams-Paisley mourns the loss of her mother on many levels.

“I felt like there were two of her ... the ‘mom I used to have’ and the ‘new mom.’ It was really tricky. I could not fully say goodbye to the old mom because this new mom was there. Candid Conversations Williams-Paisley explains the early days “of discovery” for her mother and her family were filled with anger and overreactions. As her mother cautiously confided about her confusion and inability to sign her name, the family initially attributed it to her busy work schedule and stress. As normal tasks became more difficult, and Linda’s response to everyday life became erratic, they sought answers.

She recalls those early days as being very tough as they evaluated the situation and sought solutions. “We needed to [reinsert ourselves] again and again because it sort of fell on deaf ears,” she said. “I wish we would have done so sooner. For example ... trying to get her [my mom] to write down her wishes and to be more specific about what she wanted for her care when she could no longer take care of herself.”

“This situation in the beginning was so difficult,” she explains. “He [Gurney] was sort of living in an alternate reality ... of a person whose brain was not properly functioning and she [Linda] had convinced him that it was: okay to ask us not to talk about it with anyone; okay for us not to talk about her plans later on; and that it was okay that she kept driving.”

She recounts that it took a number of “interventions” as the family determined what was happening and how to best cope. Williams-Paisley continued, “After a while we got through to him [her dad] but it was way later than I would have liked. Maybe he would have come up with those conclusions on his own or he might have just died; which was our fear. Often times the caregiver is at greater health risk than the patient because they don’t take proper care of themselves.” She added, “I was so lucky to have my siblings ...” continued on page 9 Spring 2018 | 3

Caring for a loved one with cognitive impairment

Her story is compelling, and each family has its own unique, powerful story. The saying – “when you’ve met one person with dementia, you’ve met one person with dementia” – is so true. Each individual family affected by dementia approaches care for their loved one differently, bringing its own perspective to bear to put together the pieces of the caregiving puzzle.

Each family considers factors such as: • Availability of family support: Often, with younger family members caring for their children and in the prime of their work lives, there may not be enough family available to provide care.

• Finances: Care can be expensive, and families have different levels of resources available.

• Progression of dementia: Some individuals experiencing dementia can remain in a home setting. Others develop aggressive or wandering behaviors which make caring for them at home difficult.

Middle Tennessee has myriad resources available to assist families caring for a loved one with dementia, including: • Caregiver education and support: The Alzheimer’s Association, Mid-South Chapter offers education, support groups and opportunities for advocacy. https://www.alz.org/altn/ • Respite care: Tennessee Respite Coalition offers care and respite for family caregivers. • Professional care guidance: Services such as the FiftyForward Care Team specialize in assisting families seeking care for older adult loved ones by offering expertise to guide families in making the right choices and avoiding missteps in care. As part of care planning, for example, the Care Team offers referrals to vetted in-home care providers and residential options. https://fiftyforward.org/supportive-care/care-team/ • In-home care: Families can purchase in-home care to help with their loved one’s care needs. 1. The IRS will never suddenly call demanding payment for back taxes. They ALWAYS attempt to reach you by mail first.

2. Be wary of unsolicited “offers of assistance” such landscaping, roof repair, car detailing, etc. Call or check the Better Business Bureau website (www.bbb.org/nashville/accredited-businessdirectory) before agreeing to or signing any contracts.

3. Remember to close and lock windows and doors.

4. Avoid “checking in” places on social media. You don’t want potential thieves to know you are not at home!

5. Check the weather report before leaving your home to be prepared in case of hazardous weather conditions.

Senior Ride Nashville: keeping older adults mobile

FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center member Linda Black was motivated to attend an information session describing the new Senior Ride Nashville “because I live in a senior community and I see seniors who could use the service.” Her initial interest has grown into a passion since she signed on as one of Senior Ride Nashville’s first volunteers. She joined a corps of 29 drivers who, from Nov. 2017 through Jan. 2018, have traveled 2,581 miles transporting 33 older adults in the Bellevue community.

Senior Ride Nashville was founded by the Council on Aging of Middle Tennessee as a response to the growing need for safe, reliable door-thru-door transportation for older adults in Davidson County. The program matches older adults in need of a ride with volunteers willing to give a ride. FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is working to help recruit volunteers to serve as drivers. FiftyForward centers are also serving as locations for information and training sessions as Senior Ride expands throughout Davidson County.

Joining Black as part of the first corps of volunteers are FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center members Sue Baumgartner and Susan Cohen. After completing a background check and training session, Black, Baumgartner, Cohen and the other Bellevue-based volunteers have been on the road helping their senior neighbors access services, complete shopping trips and attend medical appointments. “I’ve taken riders to the beauty parlor, grocery stores, the Gordon Jewish Community Center and to the dentist,” said Black. “They are always so thankful for the ride; it touches your heart when you can help them out.”

One of the keys to success for volunteers is the ability to choose which rides to accept. A web-based system allows volunteers to log on, see the rides that have been requested 6 | Forward Focus

and choose to accept those that work with their schedule.

“The Senior Ride Training was very informative and Senior Ride Program Manager Victoria Mehren has been very helpful,” continued Black. “I would recommend anyone interested sign up as a volunteer, it means so much to the seniors who need to get out.”

Cohen added, “When I heard this program was going to happen, I was very happy. I had watched one of those Aging Matters programs that showed seniors staying home because they could no longer drive and it had made me sad. I hope that people who are still driving and have some free time will consider helping our neighbors get to doctor’s appointments, to exercise classes, or whatever. You will feel good about participating!”

Baumgartner watched as her parents experienced the limitations associated with not being able to drive and that motivated her service. “Signing up for me is a ministry and I have met some very interesting and amazing older adults as a result. It has also made me better appreciate the freedom and independence that driving provides with a hope that when I am no longer able, some nice person will be willing to do the same for me. I think it is a wonderful program that you are offering to the Bellevue community and I am proud that I am able to be of service.”

Transportation is at the forefront of Nashville growing pains In Fall 2016, FiftyForward conducted a survey with its members to determine transportation needs. Cost was a barrier for 32% and 30% raised mobility as an issue (n = 332). Another 55% marked “other.” When asked to define their specific deterrent, the overwhelming responses pointed to night driving, traffic, parking, and interstate travel. When asked whether it would be helpful if FiftyForward assisted with group transportation, more than 60% of respondents requested transportation to attend evening and special programs and a combined 38% sought shopping opportunities or transport to FiftyForward centers (n = 473).

Army of Kindness FiftyForward Meals on Wheels celebrates an agency-wide effort to bring caring hearts to its clients During the month of January and February, FiftyForward Meals on Wheels experienced an incredible outpouring of love and support from all FiftyForward centers, program volunteers and even several agencies like Cigna-HealthSpring as they sought to make this Valentine’s Day the best one yet for its customers.

The agency-wide effort encouraged members, staff, volunteers and supporters to create one-of-a-kind cards to be delivered on Valentine’s Day in a special basket decorated with paper flowers. FiftyForward Adult Day Services participants were also included as they received a special bag of goodies containing toiletries, word search books and a variety of necessities.

Thanks to all who donated time and talents to this agency effort.

In a packed arena at Lipscomb University, FiftyForward Donelson Station member Evelyn Cutler (at right) was surprised to be awarded a new car by the George Shinn Foundation at its annual Christmas ShinnDigg celebration this past December.

Cutler, 62, is a polio survivor. Her home was also badly damaged in the May 2010 flood, but she is a survivor! She uses braces to get around and takes fitness classes at the center to keep up her stamina and stength.

She is a ray of sunshine to all who know her. The new car is now equipped with hand controls for her use. We look forward to seeing Evelyn in her new wheels!

In Tennessee, help for caregivers is available through Tennessee Respite Coalition and there is support and education from groups including the Alzheimer’s Association. When Linda’s doctor suggested Gurney Kim and her father, Gurney. might be suffering from depression he acknowledged that he had not really been thinking of himself.

Williams-Paisley said, “Sometimes there is stigma regarding taking something for depression. He did not even think about doing something like that until it was suggested to him, and even then it took him a while because he was not one to take medication for something like that. It was a great tool to help him get through a really hard time and not something he had to keep up long term.”

“Through Where the Light Gets In, Kimberly Williams-Paisley’s book detailing her mother’s journey with Alzheimer’s; the Disco Party, a fundraising event featuring Nashville’s country music stars; and so much more, she truly makes a stand against this horrible disease,’ said Fatemeh M. Delheimer, manager of Development and Communications, Alzheimer’s Association Mid-South. “Alzheimer’s unfortunately still has a stigma attached to it, but by sharing her family’s story, Williams-Paisley is helping countless families dealing with the disease today.”

Wrapping up with resources During our interview, Williams-Paisley was quick to offer that her journalist father was extremely helpful in assisting with a summary of links (included at the close of the book) to help others seeking resources related to Alzheimer’s and dementia.

FiftyForward Bordeaux

Digital literacy training March 3, 13, 20 and 27; April 3, 10, 17 and 24; Classes run 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. FREE Nashville Public Library will be providing these classes free for members of FiftyForward Bordeaux.

Gardening Saturday, May 26, 8:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. FiftyForward Bordeaux will plant vegetables in their raised garden in partnership with CGS and Tennessee State University Extension Program.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Singer Les Kerr Wednesday, March 21: Birthday potluck lunch at 11:30 a.m.; program at noon.

Entertainer Les Kerr will perform an Irish-themed set that includes standards like When Irish Eyes are Smiling, Danny Boy and My Wild Irish Rose, along with the humorous Who Threw the Overalls in Mrs. Murphy’s Chowder. Come and celebrate the “wearing of the green” with this talented performer.

There is no charge to attend the potluck; however, attendees are expected to bring a dish to share.

Brown Bag Review of Medicines with Walgreens Thursday, March 22, 9 - 11 a.m.

A brown bag review of medicines can identify medicine errors and misunderstandings that would otherwise be overlooked. Friendly pharmacists from Walgreens will be here to help. In order for the Brown Bag Review to work, however, the pharmacist must know everything you take. Please bring all your prescription and over-the-counter medicines, as well as vitamins, supplements, herbal medicines, topicals, liquids, injectibles and inhalants.

There is no charge for this review, but you need to sign up. Maximum 12 people.

Multiculturalism and Diversity with Dr. Mary Clark Thursday, April 26: Lunch at 11:30 a.m.; program at noon.

The highly successful and engaging Aging Mastery Program® is back for another round FiftyForward is pleased to offer another ten-week health and wellness program for members 55 years and older. This series of classes, the Aging Mastery Program® (AMP®), was offered at each FiftyForward center last year. Developed by the National Council on Aging (NCOA), the program was offered at all seven FiftyForward lifelong learning centers in Davidson and Williamson counties.

What is AMP®?

The goal of the Aging Mastery Program® is to empower older adults to make and maintain small but impactful changes in their life.

For each of these classes, participants receive basic educational materials developed by NCOA along with a facilitator’s expertise in the subject area. Participants also receive a manual that has a checklist of potential next steps and a system for tracking behaviors. They earn points for positive actions and rewards. Program completion is celebrated with an agency-wide graduation.

Each AMP session will consist of seven classes tackling issues such as: navigating longer lives; healthy eating; hydration and medication; exercise and falls prevention; behavior; sleep; financial fitness and advanced planning; healthy relationships and community engagement.

The facilitator for these AMP sessions is Dr. Celeste Lee, MBA, MS, PhD., a licensed nutritionist and culinary certified. Lee is an evidencebased practitioner in healthy aging and is passionate about maintaining functional independence through nutrition, exercise and behavioral change. Lee has developed and conducted “healthy aging” programs for other Nashville organizations.

Other AMP instructors will include local community specialists in the field of care management, financial planning, and volunteer engagement. Be sure to sign up at a center near you.

Making your digital “footprint” a part of your estate planning Did you know that every day more than 10,000 people are wished happy birthday on Facebook? Did you also know that most, if not all, of those 10,000 people have passed away, but their families can’t take down their Facebook page? (www.goodlifeorganizing.net/digital-estateplan) According to Judith Kolberg, a recognized professional organizer, member of the National Association of Professional Organizers and book author who specializes in helping families create digital estate plans, these Facebook pages sometimes lead to identity theft. Kolberg contends that “every year 15 million social media identities are stolen or hacked and of those, 2.5 million belong to dead people.”

We may have thought about our personal possessions or finances in the case of death, but did you know that your digital footprint will often outlive you?

Be sure to update your digital estate list a few times a year to keep it current especially if you are active on several social media platforms.

What is a digital footprint?

As defined by techterms.com, a digital footprint is a “trail of data while using the internet,” but there are specifically two kinds of digital footprints: A “passive” digital footprint is a data trail that one might leave online when visiting a website. The webserver logs an IP address, the internet service provider and location and this search may be part of your computer’s search history.

An “active” digital footprint, on the other hand, includes any data submitted online via email, Facebook status update, tweet, photo on Instagram, blog post or personal data given on an online purchase.

Generally the more time spent online, the larger the footprint.

Create a digital estate plan It is daunting to create an actual will and last testament, but it is imperative to do so. Think of a will as the last gift that you give your family – peace of mind. It will help your family in dispersing your beloved memories as well as any monetary gifts to family members.

The digital estate plan works in much the same way as a last will and testament. It will help guide your family in how to close your social media accounts, online banking accounts, Facebook page, website domain, photo accounts and more. (Facebook has instructions on how to change a page to a memorial page.)

A digital estate plan is relatively easy to create; it is simply a listing of your social media accounts, usernames and passwords and a plan of what to do to close them. Think of these accounts as your assets that will need to be assessed and closed after your passing.

What to include in your digital estate Create an inventory of all your social media accounts, online banking, online photo albums by making a list to include: • • • • • • •

Name of account (PayPal, Facebook, Twitter, online banking, etc.)

Account number (if applicable) URL Username Password Security question(s) and answer(s) Detailed notes on what to do with account (close the account, or in the case of Facebook, memorialize the account for a while, then close, etc.)

Be sure to update the inventory a few times a year to keep it current, especially if you shop online or are active on several social media platforms.

Storing your digital estate plan The choice is up to you in how you wish to create your digital estate plan, but you must decide how you want to store it. There are several options. You can store it in a password protected spreadsheet and give the password to a trusted family member or friend. You can also store it on a thumb drive and give that to a trusted loved one. Think of this person as the digital executor of your estate. It is probably best to designate someone who is comfortable with technology.

Another option might be to take advantage of the apps that are available that can keep all your passwords and accounts centralized for your current use as well as when you pass.

Apps like LastPass, DashLane or KeePass are all good password keepers. Just be sure to include the username and password in your will, or better yet, make your digital estate plan a part of your will.

Although this compiling of your digital information may seem tedious at first, your family will be happy to have it all at their fingertips.

When fighting disease, give it your best shot!

Keep illness away by getting your flu and pneumonia vaccinations When you were a child and fell off your bike, you likely hopped right back on — even with a few scrapes and bruises. When you got sick, all it took was medicine, rest and some chicken soup, and you were back on your feet in no time.

Although those memories of childhood remain vivid in our minds, our bodies don’t bounce back quite the way they used to. An illness that can quickly run its course in a teenager can be a harrowing road to recovery for an older adult. That’s why it’s important to protect yourself from flu and pneumonia.

Flu season is now in high gear and its impact on individuals of all ages is staggering. The flu is especially hard on the very young and older adults because their immune systems may not be as strong. A staggering 90% of flu-related deaths occur in people age 65 and older.

It is important to take proper precautions to keep yourself healthy as well as evaluate what vaccinations might provide value and why.

Be wise – immunize According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), all adults need immunizations to prevent them from getting and spreading serious diseases that could result in poor health, missed appointments, medical bills, and not being able to care for family.

As we age, our immune systems tend to weaken over time and may put us at higher risk for certain diseases. This is why, in addition to seasonal flu (influenza) vaccine and Td or Tdap vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis), you should also get Pneumococcal vaccines, which protect against pneumococcal disease, including infections in the lungs and bloodstream (recommended for all adults over 65 years old, and for adults younger than 65 years who have certain chronic health conditions).

Flu Shot For adults 50 and older it is suggested they receive a seasonal flu (influenza) vaccine every year. This vaccine is especially important for people with chronic health conditions and older adults. More than 60 percent of seasonal flu-related hospitalizations occur in people 65 years and older.

Not only is it tougher to recover from the flu as you get older, but the longer you’re sick, the more likely you are to infect others around you.

Getting a flu shot every year — and getting it as soon as the vaccine is available, generally late September or early October — is an effective way to protect yourself and others. A high-dose shot designed for older adults may provide the best protection; ask your doctor if it’s right for you.

Tdap vaccine/pertussis Every adult should get the Tdap vaccine once if they did not receive it as an adolescent to protect against pertussis (whooping cough), and then a Td (tetanus, diphtheria) booster shot every 10 years. Medical professionals today note they are seeing a prevalence of older adults (think grandparents) who are often the carrier of pertussis to young children and infants.

Shingles vaccine According to the CDC, almost 1 out of every 3 people in the United States will develop shingles in their lifetime and the risk of shingles increases as we grow older. If you had chicken pox as a child, the virus still lives within you and can surface at any time. The shingles 16 | Forward Focus

vaccine, which protects against shingles and the complications from the disease, is recommended for healthy adults 50 years and older (although some medical professionals and/ or insurance plans don’t suggest this until you are 60).

Pneumonia vaccine Pneumonia is dangerous for older adults because it can be difficult to recover from and can lead to lifethreatening complications.

It can also make preexisting heart and lung conditions worse. There are two pneumonia vaccines you should get at two different times; generally, they should be given one year apart. Your doctor will tell you when to get each shot.

Talk with your doctor or other healthcare professional to find out which vaccines are recommended for you based on your specific health status, age, and lifestyle.

Best practices to stay healthy this season The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers several every day preventative practices that will help keep you healthy: • Try to avoid contact with sick people and if you are sick, limit your activities so as not to infect others.

• If you become sick with a cold or with flu-like symptoms, the CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities.

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue in the trash when you are done.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread through mucus membranes.

• Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that you use often—telephones, doorknobs, tables, etc.

Older rockers and sewing machines still hold interest for antique collectors Hi Connie,

I purchased this antique tapestry fireside rocker from a friend about 35 years ago. Her mother was a collector and purchased it from a Belle Meade home many years ago. It is quite heavy.

I was wondering if you could tell me the value and any other information about the chair. I love your articles.

Dear Barbara, Your little rocker seems to fit nicely in a corner. Sometimes when a rocker is empty and at rest, it can take more floor space than we’re willing to give. It’s heavy because it is most likely mahogany, made during the Colonial Revival period in America, circa 1920. It’s a hundred years old, well made and timeless.

As is typical of American Colonial Revival furniture, tricks of construction and style motif were borrowed from any or all previous styles and improved by modern methods of production.

Similar rockers sell from $65 to $135. I especially like the clean lines and unimposing form.

Hi Margaret, Barnabas Eldredge is credited with developing the vibrating shuttle that rocks back and forth beneath the fabric to more easily join two pieces of cloth. His first factory was in Chicago from 1869-1890. The Eldredge Sewing Machine Company merged with National Sewing Machine Company in 1886 and began moving production to Belvidere, Illinois.

burst of business sewing machine companies encountered as the 1800s waned.

Orders were a joyful challenge to fill by manufacturers for inhome machines. The Sears & Roebuck catalog had a great deal to do with this. An attractive, finely tuned sewing machine could be delivered for under $30 to anywhere in the United States with a rail line. Sewing machine manufacturers had to work together to find enough skilled workers, cabinet makers, and machinists to do the work.

Eldredge, by way of National, consolidated into the June Manufacturing Company in 1891. Under the Eldredge name, the Eldredge B was made in 1886 and 1897 within the EldredgeNational-June consolidations. I could not find when the year “improved” became part of the package.

Your unique box shaped sewing machine case is called a parlor cabinet. It had a counter-balanced, easy to open lid that gently raises the machine from within. Some cabinets were even more decorative and resembled a writing desk with pen holder, an added drawer for writing supplies and a lock to keep them all safe.

I think most, if not all, families had a sewing machine by 1900.

Your cabinet fits easily into today’s home. The flat top and hidden machinery can easily accommodate a lamp, photos, and a few books.

“Beyond repair” machines and cabinets often bring more money by breaking them down to sell the parts. Drawers can bring up to $30 each. Cast iron treadles and side braces are used as wall décor and sell from $18 to $55.

I predict treadle machine parts will rise in value for a time. Your rich oak, functional form cabinet should guarantee a good home for your Eldredge for another 120 years.
