Connie Cathcart-Richardson finds fashion and connecting others a true calling in her second career

hat do you get when you combine the skills of a self-professed fashionista with strong business acumen, community allies and a bit of maternal instinct in the “it city” of Nashville?

You get a successful alliance, a passion for community and strengthened relationships that helped launch Nashville Fashion Week just a few years ago.

Connie Cathcart-Richardson is a woman on a mission. Known for mentoring others, she fosters alliances and creates opportunities

Nashville Fashion Week April 4-8, 2017 Nashville Fashion Week was conceived in 2010 to foster Nashville’s heralded community spirit and concentration of creative, fashion-forward and entrepreneurial talent, to create a one-of-akind five day event that is uniquely Nashville.

In April 2011, Nashville Fashion Week kicked off with a city-wide celebration of Nashville’s thriving fashion and retail community. Its vast array of creative talent continues to gain momentum year after year. Featuring local, regional and national designers and industry professionals in an array of creative events throughout the city to encourage both Nashvillians and visitors to explore the city’s diverse fashion and retail spaces with promotions, partnerships and educational workshops.

to encourage today’s designers to be successful tomorrow. She and a stellar team of supporters are putting Nashville on the map as a fashion-focused community. Nashville Fashion Week (April 4-8, 2017) is booming.

She and her team have launched a magnificent brand by propelling the careers of designers, supporting manufacturing and bringing together individuals from Nashville’s creative, design and business community.

In 2013, Cathcart-Richardson came into our circle of friends when she volunteered to help FiftyForward initiate a costume competition to select the best dressed divas and dudes during the agency’s annual Viva la Diva 5K and 10K event run. Held each fall on the campus of Nissan North America, the event benefits the programs and services of the 61-year old nonprofit agency.

Today she is effusive when she talks about her role “as a proud 56-year-old spokesperson” for the fashion industry. New careers and successful opportunities can begin at any age. Cathcart-Richardson lives true to that statement and embodies the chic, pulled together, fashion-forward female who is leading the way.

When Cathcart-Richardson speaks of the Nashville fashion world, she’s passionate about business and helping others. She often refers to Nashville as a fashion community rather than an industry. Old or young, she says, “We all just come together.” It just makes sense to bring together like-minded people, companies and schools including MTSU, O’More and Belmont into the mix. We’ve forged partnerships that push Nashville fashion forward.”

There’s mutual admiration between CathcartRichardson and Eric Adler Bornhop. He recalls first meeting her at Nashville Fashion Week in 2014. “Connie has personally met with me on several occasions to provide advice on marketing business and networking,” said Bornhop. “She’s always available to help and

Bornhop continued, “Because of her vast experience and sincere kindness to share it, she is like a mother to many of the emerging ‘designer children’ in Nashville’s fashion industry. She has mentored me directly and indirectly throughout the years. FiftyForward Care Team managers use agency’s 60+ years of experience to provide resources for older adults In today’s busy world it can be difficult to set time aside for important long-term planning. Too often, we put off tasks that can feel overwhelming. When it comes to evaluating the needs of an aging family member, friend or for yourself, there is no time like the present to get started.

What does a care manager do?

Care managers specialize in navigating resources for older adults and can offer a clear path to future preparation as well as peace of mind. It is important to note care managers have the benefit of a wealth of experience in helping many, many families on their elder care journey. Care managers know what issues are important to consider as we age. This guides them to ask the pertinent questions and provide essential information to help families with options.

They help weigh choices in areas including in-home medical care and residential opportunities.

What can you expect from a care management assessment?

Care management assessments focus on the needs of older adults and typically cover important areas including: finances, legal considerations, health care, residential solutions, and the availability of family support. Care managers can work through family preferences, answer questions regarding care options and work with your schedule to meet at your home or wherever feels the most comfortable for you.

To make the most of a care assessment: 1) Have an initial discussion with your family about specific questions and concerns.

2) Gather your information about doctors, medical conditions, medications, finances, legal arrangements such as powers of attorney, as well as preferences for care.

3) Decide if family members would like the opportunity to meet privately with the care manager before meeting with the senior so that concerns can be aired as freely as possible.

Remember care managers are there to provide answers to your long-term elder planning questions and to guide you through the maze of options so you can choose what is best for you and your loved one.

helped me learn tips and tricks of the business of fashion.”

Alicia Searcy (see sidebar) is just launching her business and much of her success is due to the support of CathcartRichardson. “I want to be Connie when I grow up …” says Searcy, “She is gracious, open and candid and so supportive.

I can’t say enough good things about Connie.”

When referencing her relationship with Cathcart-Richardson, fashion model Lydia Touchton says Connie is an amazing woman. “I call Connie my Fashion Connie and her husband Eddy Mama,” Touchton adds. “Modeling is really tough on your self-esteem, but she has always made sure I know my worth. She genuinely loves what she does and that makes my job not feel like ‘work’ at all.”

Brett Warren, of BrettWarrenPhotography.com, shares his thoughts: “Connie has been there since the beginning of my career in fashion photography. She was among the first to take notice of a new young photographer and showcase my images for the Nashville Fashion Week campaign,” said Brett Warren, of Brett Warren Photography. “Ever since then, Connie has been a steadfast champion of my work, and for that I am truly grateful. I often give her a call when I am stuck or just need some encouragement. Her spirit shines in all she does, and I am truly grateful to call her a friend and collaborator.”

Cathcart-Richardson recounts her love for helping others (and what some call her maternal instinct) as part of her DNA. She and Eddy, her high school sweetheart and husband of 34 years, have led church ministries for high school, college, young adults and young married couples for 20 years. The couple remain committed to helping others simply by doing life with them. During a recent phone call she referenced having to dash off to take food to a new mother. When we offered congrats on the addition to her family she was quick to add, “This is family. We have a lot of young mothers and new babies ... They need help! And I get to love on them and hand them back.”

In looking back at her younger self, she notes that she finally got where she wanted to be after “just a few years...” She said, “I dreamed at the age of 18 I’d be working at a fashion publication.” Looking back, she jokes, “Does anyone ever know what they want at 18?”

Maybe she did. Now, Connie Cathcart-Richardson is in exactly the right place at the right time.

Alicia Searcy, Spashionista, Celebrates Fashion for EVERY BODY

When the Nashville flood happened in 2010, Alicia Searcy’s house was 2 feet underwater and she lost all her clothes in the flood. Rather than see it as a problem, she reframed it as an opportunity – to create a better version of herself, starting with her self-esteem and buying better clothing. She started adding to her clothing collection slowly at first, adding high quality separates and eschewing the fast fashion fads. Right away she noticed the change in how people viewed her and talked to her. Because of her disability (she has Choreoathetotic Cerebral Palsy which inhibits mobility), she didn’t want people to see her disability but rather to fully engage with her.

Cathcart-Richardson FiftyForward/Misa Acox inspired her to embrace fashion for herself and for the diversity of people who find themselves outside of the fashion-ready body type. In our conversation, Searcy added, “Don’t despair. There is no such thing as a ready-to-wear body.” In turn her interest in fashion spawned a blog (spashionista.com) that openly discusses and celebrates the diversity of body types. In 2016, she co-founded and co-produced, along with Krystle Ramos of Pura Vida Vintage, Nashville’s first inclusive fashion show, “Fashion for Every Body.” The show brought together ten designers (including an adaptive clothing company), two vintage clothing boutiques, 20 models from all walks of life and a staff of more than 30 wardrobe stylists, makeup artists, hair stylists, photographers, and volunteers. The evening was a success and has now launched a website (http://fashionisforeverybody.org/index.html).

Searcy truly believes that fashion can “help people understand who you are.” She believes that people should embrace their own style of fashion because “you absorb that energy, it becomes almost spiritual in loving who you are.” This is especially important for women 50+. “Find clothing that flatters your body, but don’t be afraid to have clothing tailored.” She is a big proponent of tailoring, having befriended designer Eric Adler Bornhop at Fashion Week a few years ago and whom she trusts completely with tailoring all her fashion finds. She says Bornhop tailors about 90% of her clothing to fit her 5’, shortwaisted frame. She adds, “Don’t despair about sizes. Numbers mean nothing!”

Through her blog and friendships with other fashion industry professionals, Searcy has learned the importance of supporting the Nashville fashion community – when you buy locally, 53 cents out of a dollar of that purchase stays in the community, whereas buying “fast fashion” only offers 12 cents on the dollar. She also offers up the advice that shopping at vintage clothing stores can yield fantastic fashion finds as well as online shops that cater to different sizes.

Searcy even feeds her love of shoes, especially high heeled boots, by purchasing shoes online to fit her wider feet. Searcy is a spitfire of a fashion maven. Her energy and love of life is contagious and you will find yourself smiling in her presence. Searcy concluded our conversation by saying, “Life is short, polish up the outside to let the inside shine through!”

Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) volunteer profile

FiftyForward FLIP nominates Lillian Schklar for the 2017 Mary Catherine Strobel Award During the mid-1940s, thousands of young women got offers of good-paying jobs working on some sort of government project in the South. They were told their efforts would lead to a quicker end to World War II, but they were told little else. One of those young women was Lillian Schklar, who moved from Middle Tennessee to Oak Ridge and, unknowingly, became part of the atomic bomb project.

They worked as secretaries and nurses, chemists and Williamson County FLIP Coordinator Kathy technicians, all the while Banks congratulates FLIP volunteer Lillian not knowing the real Schklar during this year’s recognition luncheon. purpose of their jobs: to enrich fuel for the first atomic bomb ever used in combat. Schklar worked as Cubicle Operator #2 and is featured in the 2013 publication, Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of Women Who Helped Win World War II. After serving her country, Schklar returned to Middle Tennessee to raise a family and engage in volunteer service. Schklar was a past president and founding member of Alive Incorporated which later became Alive Hospice. She is a past AARP TN president, past Franklin High School band booster, past den mother for Franklin Pack 131, a past Worthy Matron in the Eastern Star, a decades-long member of Nashville’s West End Synagogue, and has served more than 10 years as a FiftyForward Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) volunteer. FLIP is part of FiftyForward’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program – a program uniquely designed to ensure that older adults are able to use their considerable time and talents to serve others.

Schlar came to FLIP as an 80-year-old who was experiencing significant challenges. She had recently lost her husband and was undergoing chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. Schklar’s son, John, knew that despite the fact that his mother faced great adversity, she was exceptionally gifted and had the capacity to give to others.

Remembering her commitment to volunteerism while he was growing up, John felt that his mother needed a place to serve. John reached out to FiftyForward for advice on an opportunity, and the match with FLIP was made.

FLIP is a perfect fit for Schklar. Having had five children of her own (and at last count eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren), her gifts are maximized in service as a volunteer tutor to struggling students at Liberty Elementary School in the Franklin Special School District.

For the past 10 years, Schklar has served for 2-3 hours each week during the school year. She meets with four children each week for 30 minute one-on-one sessions.

She works with her students on the specific skills they need to succeed academically and develops a strong bond that helps build their personal and academic confidence. More than 88% of the children who worked with a FLIP tutor in Franklin Special Schools, as Schklar does, met their academic goals in 2015-2016. Most of these students increased their reading proficiency significantly. Additionally, she is a regular presence at the school and resource for teachers who use her extensive knowledge of Franklin history to help Liberty Elementary students understand more about their community.

Pamela Fahey, M.Ed., a reading coach at Liberty Elementary calls Schklar “a true American gem.” “[Lillian]has been volunteering to read with our students at Liberty Elementary for years and we are truly blessed and honored to be the recipients of her wisdom, love, and great sense of humor. I have had the privilege, both as a homeroom teacher and a reading coach, to observe her guiding our beginning readers and bringing the stories to life for them. I Lillian’s story overheard a 4th grader reading to her demonstrates the about the Appalachian Trail and when remarkable power the student was finished, Ms. Schklar of purpose. went on to tell her about a relative’s adventures who had actually hiked the trail. Every year, she brings historic photos to share with our students of the Williamson County Schoolhouse she attended as a young girl. She has not only helped educate and improve the reading skills of our young Liberty students, but she has lovingly developed friendships over the years with them, as well as with our teachers. She flies down the long hallways of our building faster than any of us, always with a smile on her face, excited to help the next student. She has instilled a respect for senior citizens in our youth that is rarely seen these days and not easily taught.”

Schklar’s story demonstrates the remarkable power of purpose. Not many 80-year-olds undergoing cancer treatment would jump into a challenging volunteer placement. Not only has the service proved to be a tremendous benefit to the community, it has also provided Lillian with a sense of purpose. In recognition of her outstanding service to both FLIP and her community, she is the FiftyForward RSVP 2017 nominee for the Mary Catherine Strobel award.

FiftyForward Foster Grandparent Program volunteers saluted for excellence The FiftyForward Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) recently held its annual recognition celebration honoring volunteers who have given exceptional service to the community and whose impact has left a lasting impression on the young learners they serve.

This year several foster “grannies” were recognized for their years of volunteer service including Carol Rainer who was awarded The Mabel Hopwood Award for Excellence in Volunteering. Rainer currently volunteers at the Metro Nashville Public Schools location Rocketship Northeast and has served in the program since 2012. The Mable Hopwood Award was created as a way to honor the loving spirit and hard work of Mrs. Mabel Hopwood, a former Foster Grandparent volunteer. This lovely 90-year-old woman would ride the bus Carol Rainer, 5 days each week to volunteer and help Foster Grandparent the developmentally disabled children of Clover Bottom. The award is given each year to a volunteer who most exemplifies the dedication and love for children shown by Mrs. Mable Hopwood.

The recognition celebration also served as a retirement party for one of the FiftyForward Foster Grandparent longest serving volunteers. Clara Copeland, lovingly referred to as “Penny,” age 87, began her volunteer The FiftyForward Foster Grandparent Program is looking for a few good grandparents to take Nashville’s children to the next level of success.

service at 18th Avenue Enrichment Center in 1991 and is retiring after 25 years. Her most recent volunteer efforts have been at the Maddox YMCA Early Childhood Development Center. Copeland received The Mabel Hopwood Award in 2000 at the age of 71. Before joining the FiftyForward Foster Grandparent Program, Copeland was employed by Meharry Medical Center for 33 years and she is a well-known soloist who has sung at numerous places of worship in Nashville. She has been a faithful member of the Zion Baptist Church for 45 years and is considered a spiritual leader in the Nashville community.

She represents the very best in community service and has spoken on behalf of the program many times to community leaders. Her kind spirit and caring heart have guided and inspired hundreds of little children throughout the past 20 years.”

Penny Gammons, director of the FiftyForward Foster Grandparent Program, shared her thoughts about Copeland’s service: “Clara (Penny) Copeland can light up a room with her beautiful voice and personality, but more importantly, she lights up a room when she speaks about her genuine love for children and community. During her 25 years as a foster grandparent volunteer she was able to share her passion for educating children with more than 550 of Nashville’s struggling children.”

In 1966, FiftyForward was selected as the original site to launch the national Foster Grandparent Program. Each year, approximately 70 adults (age 55+) give more than 68,000 hours as volunteers, tutoring and mentoring more than 1,000 at-risk children in Davidson County.

Foster Grandparent participants play a vital role in the development and educational success of children ages 2 years old through 6th grade.

FiftyForward Foster Grandparent Program volunteers currently serve in 16 schools and child learning centers throughout Davidson County.

Life after retirement at FiftyForward College Grove

I feel as if I have lived at least four different lifetimes in my 69 years. From growing up as a barefoot girl in the Appalachians of Virginia to preaching the gospel – with farm wife and mother and a long stint as editor and author in between. I remember standing in that august sanctuary at Brentwood United Methodist to bring the Gospel lesson and thinking, “Oh Mama, if you could see me now.”

So many busy years, but time passed and I began to have mobility issues and a lot of pain so I knew it was time to retire for good. I came back to the farm in College Grove where I had lived with my husband and sons.

One of my churches gave me a fantastic recliner as a retirement gift. I‘ve always tried not to use the word “love” with an inanimate object, but I truly love that chair. In many ways it gave me my life back, but I spent so much time in it that my sons grew worried and tried to find something for me to do. I had been a member at J. D. Lewis Senior Center in Erin, Tennessee, and went as often as I could, but I just couldn‘t bring myself to go to FiftyForward College Grove.

One day a friend from the past asked my help in filling out some papers and suggested we meet at the center. She was late, so I wandered around looking at the beautiful facility. I saw a woman sitting in a recliner drinking a cup of coffee.

I asked her where to get a cup and she said, “Sit down and I’ll get you a cup.” So that was my introduction to the wonderful people who are members here. I smile every time I see her. I expect she doesn’t even remember that moment.

I started dropping by, mainly to talk and drink coffee. The Canasta players invited me to play and even offered to teach me to play, but that was not for me. From my chair I read about all the classes, day trips, and informational lunches I could be going to. They sounded so exciting but I was still having a love affair with “The Beast” (my chair). Slowly though I began to want more and read the newsletter more carefully. I went on a few day trips and I began to want more. I realized I was really missing the research and writing I had done as a pastor and ventured into the writer‘s group—a talented, friendly group with a love for the written word. Book Club followed. To tell the truth I don’t like all the selections, but the discussions are always lively and interesting.

FiftyForward College Grove member Peg Augustine recently gave a riveting storytelling performance adopting the persona of an Appalachian woman with costume and props. Members learned Augustine had written the entire monologue based on conversations she had with her grandmother.

I must not forget to speak of the luncheons and programs. The food, whether pot luck or center-cooked, is always delicious. We have met a Revolutionary War soldier and Abe Lincoln among others. I have portrayed the hymn writer Fannie Crosby and my Granny Rose, a mountain woman in the 1940s. We have had informational meetings on the new electrical meters and the solar farm. We have learned all about seafood and listened to a variety of music.

One of my things is to bring my lunch on days when nothing much is happening and eat and talk with whomever might be there. My chair gets much less use now, but I “love” it even more when I come in from a full day at FiftyForward College Grove and put my feet up.

FiftyForward Choraleers keep the songs going

In the fall of 2011 it seemed the FiftyForward Knowles Choraleers were going to fold as a group. The Choraleers, one of the longest standing singing groups of FiftyForward spanning four decades, was down to five members and looking for a new direction. The group started singing together at the old FiftyForward location in the Tarbox school and over the years had many directors and organizers. It was a way to come together in camaraderie over the love of singing.

Betty Barry and Brenda Geise happened upon Geno Haffner when he was playing piano in the FiftyForward Knowles lobby. Haffner had been teaching piano at the FiftyForward Madison Station on a regular basis.

They asked him if he had ever had experience directing a group. His answer was no although he had experience with singing. They asked him to take a chance on them.

In the last six years, the FiftyForward Choraleers have added members, many of whom have experience singing in church choirs or, in the case of Betty Barry, experience singing with the Nashville Symphony Chorus.

Several other members, it turns out, have also sung with the Symphony and this was a way to keep the songs going. One of the newest members of Choraleers, LaVerne Eagelson, was even an opera singer.

The FiftyForward Choraleers embrace the love of singing and encourage people to sing along. They perform regularly at nursing homes and assisted living communities. Under the organizing and outreach efforts of Barry, Geise, and Carolyn Pemberton, the FiftyForward Choraleers have a full schedule of performances throughout Nashville. In the coming months, they will performing at Southerland Place, Disciple Village, Sycamore Terrace, Richland Place and Morning Pointe of Brentwood, among other venues. These performances fill a void for these singers.

They get to continue performing songs they love, bring joy to others and it offers them a chance to give back.

In July 2013, FiftyForward Knowles offered the first summertime singing camp with the tagline, “If you can sing in the shower, you can sing with us!” Lead by Haffner, the FiftyForward Choraleers formed the foundation of the group inviting community members and other FiftyForward members to join them. Each section of the singing camp focused on a different style of songs – patriotic, blues, country, Broadway, classics, love songs, and protest songs. Haffner directs the singing but also offers up a bit of history and social context for each song. His knowledge is expansive, offering up interesting tidbits about each song. The singing camps are a success and have been offered every summer since.

If you are new to singing, have no fear. As Pemberton says, “Geno is so gentle with guiding us as singers, helping us to understand the music and teaching in a way that no one’s feelings get hurt.” The group now has about 20 members and are always looking to add more. Geno Haffner, Director Little did Geno know when he signed on to direct the FiftyForward Choraleers that he would be launching a renewed performing group highly in demand at venues around town.

Haffner grew up inspired by his grandmother Olive Haffner. She was a first grade teacher who also taught piano and was a church musician for years. Her influence was wide ranging, fueling his love of music and singing.

When Haffner was approached to direct the Choraleers, he had no directing experience but figured it was worth a try.

He was pleased to know that several members had previous singing experience so it was a good starting point. Over the course of the last several years he and the group planned out their rehearsals, learning new songs, new styles and coming up with themes for singing camp and performances.

The work has paid off. The group has grown in membership. They now plan out their performances based around a seasonal theme, even venturing into unusual material such as the show they recently performed in the style of a 1960s TV variety show.

Haffner, who holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, also directs and performs with his own music group, The Dean Martinis, who play jazz in and around Nashville. He has enjoyed expanding the group’s repertoire of music, introducing them to standards including American pop standards such as California Dreaming by The Mamas & The Papas to protest songs of the 1960s-70s.

Musically, Haffner is inspired by the songs of singer/songwriters like Sara Bareilles, Michael Bublé and Bruno Mars, citing a love of intricate and nuanced songwriting. He enjoys all kinds of music and hopes to inspire the FiftyForward Choraleers to continue to branch out.

FiftyForward Madison Station introduces its Random Acts of Citizenship Award (R.A.C. Award)

Twice a year, FiftyForward College Grove hosts a community all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast and this past December, they hosted Mr. and Mrs. Claus for the event. Attendees brought children and grandchildren to visit with Santa and take photos.

As a way of recognizing outstanding citizenship around the Center, we would like to recognize members who showcase qualities of going above and beyond for their fellow members and thinking of others first. The very first recipient of the Random Acts of Citizenship, or R.A.C. Award, is Theodore Castleman, better known as T.C. T.C. watches out for others who need assistance and comes to their aid before staff even realize they have arrived at the Center. Nothing is too small for his notice, from seeing equipment not working correctly to identifying someone not feeling well, T.C. will help where he can or alert Staff to a need. His everyday care is shown in keeping his fellow members daily stocked with coffee which he pays for, provides and makes himself throughout the day! Thank you T.C. for your random, or rather very purposeful, acts of kindness and citizenship.

Ensworth High School Service Day Friday, April 7 Ensworth High School students participate in a service day as part of an ongoing mission to apply skills taught in the classroom to real life circumstances. In February, Ensworth students hosted a Tech Talk workshop with members. Returning in April, the Ensworth Fiber Club will join our Sit, Knit, and Crochet group to knit and crochet items for the Nashville Rescue Mission. Students will join The Garden Club and FiftyForward J. L. Turner member Jim Horde in the community garden for spring cleaning and planting.

I have a big birthday in 2017. In fact, a whole lot of us are turning the big 6-0 this year. How do I know? Because 1957 was the peak year of the Baby Boom. I mean, BOOM! As in 4.3 million, give or take. ’57 rocks! It was a good year for the Chevy, rock ‘n roll, and babies, baby. We grew up with television, in the suburbs (lots of us), and on processed foods and Kool-Aid. We had grandmas who looked like grandmas, with rolled-down hose and orthopedic shoes and bosoms in, shall we say, brassieres that weren’t up to the task, so the belt of the cotton dress had to do some of the work. Yep, I remember my grandmas looking like that. And they were ... in their sixties.

Their grandmas, like me, don’t look like grandmas. Their shoes might be comfortable, but they might be running a trail 10K with them or doing Zumba. (For the record, I have won my age division in the former and have never dared the latter. How about you?)

Grandpas don’t look like grandpas, either, the way I remember mine. Born in the Victorian era, they didn’t wear shorts and I never saw them barefoot. My Grandpa Sheahan, a Kansas farmer seeing the ocean for the first

time at age 70, walked to the water’s edge in his wingtips and church pants, his good shirt buttoned all the way to the top under an Eisenhower jacket – casual day at the beach. His comment, after a long look out to sea, was “Reminds me of wheat.” “Amber waves of grain” are sea-green in spring. Nowadays, a grandpa might take a surfing lesson and post it to Instagram.

Then the kids would tweet him back a hard time about his board shorts and skinny legs.

Tweet, Instagram ... what do I know? I do have this in common with my grandparents: I’ve never owned a smartphone, either. But I have a fountain pen. And tonight, I stepped back in time – way past 1957 – when I found an ink-stained family heirloom. It’s an autograph book, without the cover, something kids used to have for messages from friends, and mostly in rhyme. It’s faded now, and the dates are scattered from 1903 to 1908. Some pencil scrawls from younger siblings (including my grandpa, William, and their brother, Felix, who died from TB at 17), some sweeping John Hancock strokes from a teacher, and fine, old-fashioned penmanship from cousins and friends. This entry was for my great-aunt Anna, who, despite some wishes for eventual wedded bliss, spent her life as a Catholic nun in and around Wichita.

April 29, 1906:

being a mom or a grandma. A crowded life, successful in love and grace and the healing of hearts through prayer and work and hearty laughter. I think her cousin meant to write “crowned” with success, but I like “crowded” even more. Sister Mary William (the name Aunt Anna selected when she joined the convent) had the Irish gift of a happy, loud laugh, which filled every room with joy. Her life was crammed with family, Sheahans and strangers, nuns, nieces, nephews. Here’s a picture of her with my dad and me, next to the nuns’ home (above). I was probably four, and squirmy, and Dad held me next to a smiling Sister who had a grip on my little arm. I’m in full grimace, as in “I’ll be danged if you’ll get me into that convent!” I loved her, and she’s my patron saint of aging well. She was 64 then, not a grandma, but like one, sparkling, looking like she had a long way to go before she was done.

May we all have such lovely crowded lives, at 50, 60, and beyond.

“Dear Anna--May your life always be crowded with success.”

That’s my favorite. Of all the clever couplets and warm wishes in this browned and crinkled booklet, this one line told the future true. Anna, who took vows that precluded romance and children, had a full life without

Keep your eye on the goal ahead with the use of helpful apps Parents and managers across the country are worried about their children’s and employees’ smart phones becoming a distraction, or even an addiction, but smart phones and tablets can also serve as tools to make you more productive, knowledgeable, and focused on your goals.

Now that we’ve entered a New Year, I thought it would be fun to look at some of America’s top New Year’s resolutions and how technology can help us achieve those goals. These top resolutions were determined based on Google’s searched phrases.

Get Healthy. This has been the top New Year’s resolution for years, and it should definitely be a top priority! Although smart watches and wrist trackers such as the Apple Watch and FitBit have become trendy in measuring different health statistics, recent studies have found that these tools do not significantly improve Americans’ health. Instead, try a goal-oriented app like Couch to 5K. This app works on Apple and Android systems and helps you train for a 5K through an eight-week program, as if you’ve never exercised before. Or if you’re lacking on time, try Fitnet. It provides a quick 5-7 minute workout so you can squeeze some activity into your jam-packed schedule.

Get Organized. This is another resolution that’s always listed in the top 5 of Americans’ priorities.

The best way to really organize your life and keep it organized is to start by identifying the “messiest” aspects of your life, and then find tools to help solve those issues. For example, do you feel like you and your spouse are always forgetting to tell each other about upcoming events? Try using the Cozi app, which links your device to all of your family members’ devices in scheduling appointments, making grocery lists, and sending reminders for to-do list items. While some people find world travel or trying new sports as fulfilling activities, I personally have a disability that prevents me from being able to get involved in such physically demanding activities. You can keep this resolution by identifying your biggest interests and finding the best apps or technologies to add more of those hobbies into your life. If your passion is reading, download the Nashville Public Library’s digital reader app called OverDrive. This app lets you read free books on the go without having to make a trip to a physical library location. If you love road trips, 16 | Forward Focus

Learn New Hobbies. Discovering new ways to enjoy life is easier than ever with 21st century technology! Click into the App Store to try Saambaa, which helps you find today’s biggest events and parties wherever you are. These events can range from drive-in movies to costume parties to trivia nights. Or try ShuffleMyLife, an app that sends you tasks that are determined by your location, your interests, the weather, and even time of day. You may be challenged to learn Morse code, buy tickets to an upcoming concert, or try a new form of exercise.

Spend Less and Save More. This is a noble resolution, and one of the hardest to keep! Make saving money easier by using your computer, smart phone, or tablet. One way to expedite traditional money-saving practices is by getting rid of paper coupons in favor of digital accounts.

You can load Kroger coupons to your Kroger card from home before going to the store, or on your smartphone as you shop. You can also use an app like Cellfire to find coupons and deals near your current location, and find the best nearby gasoline prices with GasBuddy. Then work on cutting down your largest monthly bills. Why pay for two hundred cable or satellite channels when you only watch two or three? Instead of paying a monthly cable bill, subscribe to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, or whichever streaming service has your favorite shows.

Don’t give up on your New Year’s resolutions — especially when you have so many tools at your disposal to keep you on track.

Definitely remember, the most effective tool for sticking to your goals: accountability. It’s always easier to achieve your goals when you have an accountability partner, or use a system to hold yourself accountable along the way.

Music for Seniors offers free 8-week Music Learning Lab This spring Music for Seniors launches a daytime, intergenerational program encouraging older adults, along with friends and family, to “live more musically!” Music for Seniors Live Performance Learning Labs at Metropolitan Nashville Public Library is offering three separate 8-week series, in ukulele, percussive arts and group singing. Beginners to seasoned “performers” are welcome to participate at NO COST in weekly one-hour sessions culminating in a public concert in the library’s auditorium. Instruments will be available for loan and course materials provided. Seniors are welcome to bring a friend to participate.

Beginning March 16, labs will meet from 10–11 a.m. at the downtown library on consecutive Tuesdays (for group singing) or Thursdays (for ukulele, percussion) with free covered parking in the library’s garage.

“We are so excited to introduce this educational program,” says Sarah Martin McConnell, Music for Seniors’ Founding executive director.

“Creative arts activity is a great way to have fun, stay connected and keep our brains sharp. We plan to continue offering labs each spring and fall.”

Nashville property tax freeze applications due April 5 Property values in Middle Tennessee continue to increase. For those who live in Davidson County, there may be some tax relief opportunities ahead. Now is a good time to assess whether you may qualify for Tennessee and Davidson County Tax Relief and Tax Freeze programs.

If you are over the age of 65 (on or before Dec. 31, 2016), own a home in Davidson County and your annual income does not exceed $29,180 you may be eligible for a tax credit. The deadline to file is April 5, 2017, and is based on your income for the 2015 tax year.

Under the tax freeze program, you must be 65 years of age on or before Dec. 31, 2016, own a home in Davidson County and your income must not exceed $41,660. If you meet this criteria, you may be eligible for the freeze program. If you qualify for the program, your taxes will be frozen at the 2016 amount and you will pay the same amount in future years as long as your income does not exceed the income level.

A number of years ago the Metro Nashville and Davidson County Trustee’s office along with a team of individuals -- who are passionate about helping and advocating for older adults -- aligned with other community groups and stakeholders to get the property tax income level increased through the Tennessee State Legislature.

As a longtime advocate for older adults and with a more than 60year history in Middle Tennessee, FiftyForward was a part of this groundbreaking effort. That year, Metro Trustees signed up more than 2,000 individuals at FiftyForward centers and the FiftyForward Living at Home staff helped assist an additional 1,000 older adults (who were

unable to leave their homes) gain relief as well.

Today, according to Trustee records approximately 7,500 individuals in Davidson County take advantage of this program.

Thousands more individuals may qualify but they don’t know about the program or how to assess whether they qualify or not.

It’s Just Stuff! by Connie Sue Davenport

Family heirlooms may not always fetch big money, but they offer interesting details from the past Hello Connie Sue, I own an antique store in the downtown area of Columbia, Tenn. I have a vendor who brought in this old Japanese “shadow box” from his deceased father’s oriental collection. He believes it to be from the 1940s, but is unsure of its exact age and value.

Could you shed some light on this for us? It is in great condition and very detailed.

Dear Connie Sue, This chest belonged to my wife. She had it when she was a little girl and it most likely wasn’t new when they got it. A friend thought it was unusual, having a top compartment, and that you would know how old it is. Please let me know what you think.

Dear Lynn, Chests of drawers like this were made in the 1920s-1930s. As part of a bedroom suite, they were mass produced and marketed as Waterfall furniture because they imitated the flowing design of Art Deco and Art Nouveau furniture made in Europe. The style was reasonably priced, modern furniture favored by newlyweds of the era.

Dear Kim, Because the girl’s head dress is like that worn in traditional Japanese weddings, this shadow box must have been created to commemorate a marriage. For a traditional wedding, the bride and groom are seated on a raised platform where they each drink sake, which symbolizes the bitter and sweet aspects of their life to come. The plants flanking the couple probably symbolize happiness, longevity and fertility. The box was most likely commissioned for presentation either to a betrothed or married couple.

Your wife’s chest of drawers appears to be in excellent condition and might sell from $125 to $350. Advanced machinery and skills allowed furniture makers to shave thin slices of veneer that, sadly, can buckle easily and chip away in large chunks.
