FiftyForward Endowment Board 2016

Looking back through the decades, we see many proactive efforts, legislation, and critical initiatives that we have championed to benefit older adults. We are advocates.

We worked with the State Legislature to ensure that state funds for in-home care are available to help older adults live independently as long as possible; we supported the property tax relief effort for older adults who qualify. We are a support team. We are committed to providing programs, services, resources and purpose for those we serve and their families.

As an agency, FiftyForward offers comprehensive programs and services that, in other cities, are typically provided by 15 or more nonprofit organizations. During the last fiscal year, FiftyForward served more than 20,000 individuals and through the years has provided direct services to approximately a million individuals (and their families) in the community.

We are proud of our accomplishments and, with a keen eye toward the future, we are in the process of developing a new Strategic Plan. Considering the large number of older adults in the United States marking their 65th birthday*, we must be nimble to accurately assess the needs and trends to continue to serve this population.

Our success would be impossible without assistance of community partners including funders, nonprofit agencies, colleagues, donors and hundreds of volunteers.

We appreciate all you have done and continue to do to enrich the lives of those 50+ in our community.

Vicki Lawrence gives back by raising awareness

Vicki Lawrence was in town recently to lend her voice to a cause near and dear to her heart. In 2011 Lawrence began experiencing itchy, red hives on her hands. Naturally she thought it might be an allergic reaction. After suffering for weeks she brought it to the attention of her doctor and it took months to finally come to a diagnosis. She was diagnosed with Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria— a reoccurring case of hives with no discernable cause. The symptoms can last for weeks before going into remission.

Soon after, Lawrence was approached to speak out about her diagnosis. Her forthrightness and familiarity to TV audiences meant that she could use her diagnosis to raise awareness by becoming a spokesperson for CIU & You, a website aimed at educating people and healthcare providers about this chronic medical condition. (See sidebar.)

We sat down with Lawrence to discuss her life with these new challenges. She shared her commitment to letting people know that this condition may be difficult at times, but it is not life threatening.

FIftyForward: Regarding your diagnosis of CIU, how long after the symptoms appeared did you have a diagnosis? , What you need to know

Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria, or CIU, affects more than 1.5 million people in the U.S. alone. “Urticaria” is the medical term for hives; “chronic” means symptoms can last for weeks and are unpredictable; idiopathic means there is no discernable “trigger.” The hives appear as itchy red bumps or welts on the skin and can appear anywhere on one’s body. Women, especially between 20-40, are twice as likely to be diagnosed with CIU than men.

The website, CIU & You, was developed as an educational site to support the specific need of those suffering. Developed in partnership with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), and funded in part

by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation and Genentech, CIU & You gives patients assistance in educating themselves and their healthcare providers on the symptoms of CIU. http://www.ciuandyou.com/

Lawrence: You automatically assume you are allergic to something. I didn’t change my diet, although someone told me it might be the tannins in red wine, but as I said, I think the red wine is the only thing getting me through this!

My doctor and I were able to find a good treatment plan; it’s treatable but not curable. It’s chronic for me as it is for 1.5 million others. The website, CIU & You, is an educational outreach program. When I was diagnosed, there was no information on the internet. I am hoping this helps others find the information they need.

FiftyForward: How did you become a spokeperson for this condition?

Lawrence: I offered to throw my hives in the ring! When I was able to get my hives under control, I offered to share my story so others could learn about it.

It’s the most frustrating thing for most patients; you don’t know when you’re going to have a horrible outbreak. The most comforting thing for me, personally, was cold temperatures, taking cold showers, lathering myself with menthol lotion, but it’s different for everyone. I thought it might be heat related, but for a lot of people it’s not.

FiftyForward: Now that you’re a spokeperson for CIU, has it become a large part of what you’re doing these days?

Lawrence: It’s different. I don’t discuss hives on stage and I’m pretty sure Mama can’t be bothered by the hives! She probably causes them!

In discussing her career, we learned that Lawrence was the youngest of the entire regular cast of the CBS series The Carol Burnett Show (1967-1978), making her debut at the tender age of 18. Her inclusion came as a lucky break—in the form of a letter she wrote to Carol Burnett on a whim to tell her of her resemblance to the comedienne.

Burnett, intrigued by the letter, and came to see Lawrence perform in a high school show. The two hit it off immediately and Burnett cast the young Lawrence in her new variety show. Lawrence was extremely shy in those early shows, content to let the other cast members—Tim Conway, Harvey Korman and Lyle Waggoner—crack the jokes and deliver the one liners. It would be several years

until Lawrence finally had the nerve to speak out and ad-lib. In one episode, in response to an ongoing gag played by Tim Conway about Siamese elephants, Lawrence delivers the bleeped one liner that brought the house down and now lives forever on YouTube.

Lawrence said she grew up on The Carol Burnett Show, honing her television chops one show at a time and she eventually grew to love her beloved character, “Mama.” Ironically, the character of the curmudgeonly matriarch was not originally written for Lawrence. In fact, Burnett was supposed to play her, but she resonated more with the character of Eunice, the daughter. Burnett asked Lawrence to play Mama. During the first read through, the writers disagreed and walked off the set in protest.

In fact, she adds, “When we were filming some of the bonus features for the recent DVD release, Carol thought it would be an incredible exercise for an acting class today to do a sketch from Mama’s Family and do it ‘straight’ as a dramatic piece.

Many of these sketches were so poignant and heartbreaking—real tearjerkers for Eunice.”

Lawrence also enjoyed success as a singer. In 1973, her recording of the song, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts in the U.S. and Canada and garnered her a gold record.

W

hen something unexpected or bad happens, the first thing most people do is feel bad, sad, or mad. That is normal and expected. For those who have been victims of a crime, these feelings can be even more intense. If we stay “stuck” in negative feelings, it is hard to move forward.

If you have been victimized, fear, anger, distrust, self-doubt, lack of confidence and feeling indebted to another person are a few of the emotions victims often report. If negative feelings are replacing your ability to be happy, if you are isolating yourself and not doing things you need or want to do, or if you feel hopeless, it is important to consider some changes that can improve your outlook.

What can you do?

•

Talk to a friend, family member, clergy member, anyone you trust and/or a professional who can help you talk through your feelings and develop a plan to cope now and in the future.

•

Focus on the positive things in your life and use them to begin moving toward a healthier you.

•

Make every day special by embracing opportunities to live your life. Have fun, laugh and forget your troubles, even if it is just for a few minutes at a time.

•

Recognize that bad things happen to good people and acknowledge that you have a choice in how you allow difficulties to impact you.

•

Let go of the desire to be perfect or the need to be everything to everybody. Doing your best is enough. You do not owe anything to others if it hurts or diminishes you.

•

Know that experiencing both good and bad emotions helps you decide what you want -- or do not want -- and why.

The FiftyForward Victory Over Crime (VOC) program helps older adults recover from victimization by providing advocacy, court accompaniment, and assistance in identifying needs and accessing services. Staff members go the extra mile to help victims build confidence.

In December 2015, VOC staff arranged a full makeover for a 91-year-old customer who was attending a holiday party later that day. She had been victimized by someone she considered to be a friend, resulting in feelings of distrust. By interacting with our team of advocates, she was shown that genuine acts of kindness can come with no expectations. Needless to say, our customer looked stunning and beamed with confidence as she 4 | Forward Focus

attended her party. She said she felt supported and learned that others cared for and about her.

Another way VOC staff members assist customers is by providing a resource lending library. In January 2016 with McKay’s generous $25 store credit donation, seven book titles were selected by FiftyForward staff to help our customers develop coping skills.

Volunteer opportunities

FiftyForward RSVP Local Seniors Provide Solutions To Hunger Issues “Healthy, nutritious food ... a smiling helpful face ... a community of care.

That’s what we offer the at-risk population through volunteer programs like the Nashville CARES food pantry and Operation Stand Down. If we, as a society, can’t take care of those who for whatever reason can’t do it for themselves then we fail ourselves as well as them.” Those are words of wisdom from Noreen Leahy, one of the more than 80 Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) volunteers who are working in the Nashville community to serve vulnerable populations.

According to the most recent Feeding America report, 15.3% of Davidson County’s population is considered food insecure – meaning those individuals do not have reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Frail seniors, individuals with disabilities and young children are disproportionally represented among the food insecure population. RSVP volunteers are supporting nonprofit agencies to ensure that their neighbors have access to fresh, nutritious foods.

“Good nutrition is medicine for people living with HIV. Nashville CARES clients rely on quality food to boost their immune systems and also to adhere to strict medication regimens. Because our food pantry distributes enough food to provide more than 100,000 meals annually, we rely on committed volunteers to assemble food bags and to distribute food each week. RSVP volunteers from FiftyForward have been the best ongoing partners in making sure we get enough food out to people in need. They are all -Del Ray Zimmerman so reliable and friendly and really love interacting Nashville CARES with our clients. FiftyForward volunteers truly increase our capacity to ensure that people with HIV not only live, but thrive,” said Del Ray Zimmerman, Nashville CARES Volunteer Coordinator.

“RSVP volunteers from FiftyForward have been the best ongoing partners in making sure we get enough food out to people in need. They are all so reliable and friendly and really love interacting with our clients.”

VOLUNTEER TRAINING FiftyForward RSVP and the AARP Foundation will co-host a training session, Monday, March 28, 9:30–11 a.m. at FiftyForward Knowles (174 Rains Ave., Nashville 37203) for volunteers of all ages interested in participating in the Fre$h Savings program at local Farmer’s Markets.

Fre$h Savings volunteers will be responsible for helping SNAP recipients exchange SNAP dollars for tokens that can be used to purchase additional fresh fruits and vegetables – essentially doubling their buying power. This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals who are interested in encouraging healthy eating habits and supporting local farmers.

Volunteers are being recruited for the following locations and shifts:

In addition to meeting the needs of vulnerable populations served by Nashville CARES, RSVP volunteers deliver meals and comfort with the FiftyForward Meals on Wheels Program, serve veterans and older adults through the lunch delivery program at The Nashville Food Project, supply Open Table Nashville with dessert and breakfast items for warming and resource shelters, and assist cancer patients with their nutritional needs through the Heimerdinger Foundation’s Meals 4 Health and Healing program.

FiftyForward volunteers are also being recruited to serve with the AARP Foundation’s Fre$h Savings program at local Farmer’s Markets. This beneficial program allows SNAP participants to purchase additional fresh fruits and vegetables using special tokens that are part of an exchange program at local markets. Please see sidebar at right for more information on this new volunteer opportunity.

Older adult volunteers are drawn to direct service opportunities that allow them to make a difference in someone else’s life. Providing a meal and kind word to a homebound older adult or making a connection with a veteran through shared military experience are ways that older adult volunteers are able to make an impact through the FiftyForward RSVP program.

FiftyForward honors volunteers Foster Grandparents

Annual recognition luncheon honors longtime service and celebrates a spirit of excellence The FiftyForward Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) held its annual recognition luncheon in December 2015 and presented a program of music, a sprinkling of spiritual grace, and a celebration of united spirit and excellence for those older adults serving the children of Nashville.

Every year, the Foster Grandparents present their service awards honoring 5, 10, or more years of service. Some of the highlights of the luncheon included performances by the Nashville Notes Children’s Choir, a reading by volunteer Clara Penny Copeland, the presentation of the Blue Ribbon Award and the Mabel Hopwood Award for outstanding service.

To acknowledge and honor our Foster Grandparent volunteers, each year the Blue Ribbon Award is presented to the volunteers from one of our 17 volunteer stations who possess the following attributes associated with excellence in volunteering.

This year’s Mabel Hopwood Award for Excellence in Foster Grandparent volunteering was awarded to Ms. Elnora Terry. Ms. Terry exemplifies the true Granny Volunteer spirit, always showing kindness and compassion to the children she serves. The award was presented by Ms. Joanne Chase, Program Director at The McNeilly Center for Children.

Also honored this year was Mrs. Clara Penny Copeland who celebrated her 24th year with the Foster Grandparent Program. She is a valued leader in Nashville’s spiritual community and a sought after vocal soloist.

Property Tax freeze for Davidson County homeowners: applications due April 5 In November 2006 the current tax freeze program was approved

by Tennessee voters in a constitutional amendment referendum.

Metropolitan Nashville-Davidson County became the first jurisdiction in the state to establish a tax freeze program.

Under the program, qualifying homeowners age 65 and older can “freeze” the tax due on their property at the amount for the year they qualify, even if tax rates increase.

Applicants must present: •

Proof of age - birth certificate, Medicare card, driver’s license, passport, etc.;

Proof of ownership - current tax bill or receipt, recorded deed, etc.;

•

Evidence property is principal residence - voter registration card, etc.

Income records must also be provided showing the total income of all owners of the property during the past year does not exceed $40,960 for Davidson County. Income records include Federal tax returns or other items acceptable to the Trustee. All applicants must sign an income verification form permitting the

Trustee to contact IRS, SSA or the State Division of Property Assessment to verify income.

The application is a public record, but the financial documents remain confidential.

Applications due April 5 Applications for the property tax freeze must be filed by April 5 each year. New applicants may come to the Office of the Trustee, but no appointment is required. FiftyForward marks 60 years of impact state funding are a viable and valuable alternative to nursing home care.

This project lead to systemic changes in how state funds in Tennessee are used to keep older adults in their homes as long as possible. Our lifelong learning centers have been established in regions where a higher concentration of under-served older adults needed ease and access to services.

Nashville nonprofit FiftyForward is one such strong community partner. Since 1956, the agency has been enriching the lives of those 50+. That’s nearly a decade before the Older Americans Act which was enacted to provide critical services to keep older adults healthy and independent.

FiftyForward’s impact on others can be seen in the success and longevity of its programs and services. Through the years and today, center members, program members, volunteers and families praise FiftyForward for countering depression and isolation, providing sense of purpose and saving lives. Family members share similar sentiments saying FiftyForward provides invaluable care, and has extended their loved ones’ lives while enhancing their quality of life.

“As an agency operating in the mid-1950s, we saw a need to serve a segment of the population that was underserved and that has not changed. Through the years we have added services based on need as well as programs and resources to become a one-stop shop offering a continuum of care,” said Janet Jernigan, executive director, FiftyForward. “Our success is possible because of the assistance of community partners including local funders, other nonprofit agencies, donors and hundreds of volunteers.”

Through the decades, FiftyForward has been an advocate for older adults on the topic of aging by offering community members and constituents educational classes ranging from health and wellness to political forums as well as programs on Medicare Part D and property tax relief. In addition, many of today’s established policies, best practices and numerous efforts that benefit older adults in Middle Tennessee were fueled, in part, by FiftyForward.

Anticipating Need. FiftyForward led the Frail Elder Services Coalition to become the catalyst in a community evaluation to assess and address unmet needs for older adults. In Madison, Tennessee, this was concurrent with the closing of Memorial Hospital and ultimately resulted in the opening of FiftyForward Madison Station (20 years ago) to offer an outlet for older adults in the Madison and north Nashville communities.

Impact. Today, FiftyForward provides services, programs, resources and centers that restore, improve and directly impact the lives of the more than 20,000 older adults each year. Over its 60 years, the agency has provided direct services to approximately a million individuals (and their families) in Middle Tennessee.

FiftyForward takes a holistic approach to serving those 50+ and offers comprehensive programs and services that, in other cities, are typically provided by 15 or more nonprofit organizations.

Emily Dickinson was called the Nun of Amherst because of her reclusive nature. Only seven or eight of her more than 1,770 poems were published in her lifetime. In contrast, Robert Frost seldom passed up an opportunity to be seen and heard. He was a frequent visitor to colleges and universities and at age 86 read a poem at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration. This will be a look at representative poems from two of our most respected poets.

Step up to Stepping On fall prevention program offered at FiftyForward Madison Station

Falls for older adults can be devastating and life changing. How can they be prevented?

More than one-third of people age 65 or older fall each year.

Falls are the leading cause of injury and hospitalization for trauma and death among older adults.

• •

35% of people who fall become less active.

40% of people who enter a nursing home had a fall in the prior 30 days.

Don’t be one of these statistics!

FiftyForward Madison Station is offering Stepping On, a falls prevention program that has been researched and proven to reduce falls in older adults. Certified leaders teach the class and guest experts, such as a physical therapist, pharmacist, and ophthalmologist, visit and provide information on exercise, vision, safety, and medications.

Topics include: Simple and fun balance and strength training, the role vision plays in keeping and maintaining balance, how medications can contribute to falls, ways to keep from falling when out in the community, what to look for when selecting footwear, and how to eliminate falls and hazards at home.

The class will meet every Thursday, 10 a.m.-noon, April 7-May 19.

The class is free and space is limited to 16 participants. To register for the class, you must attend a pre-class screening, conducted at FiftyForward Madison Station from 10 a.m.-noon on March 21-24.

Once again, FiftyForward Knowles invites all members and the Nashville community to join them for another lively discussion for Nashville READS. Book summary James McBride (R) grew up as one of twelve siblings in the all-black housing projects of Red Hook, Brooklyn, the son of a black minister and a woman who would not admit she was white. The object of McBride’s constant embarrassment, and his continuous fear for her safety, his mother was an inspiring figure, who through sheer force of will saw her dozen children through college, and many through graduate school.

McBride was an adult before he discovered the truth about his mother: the daughter of a failed itinerant Orthodox rabbi in rural Virginia, she had run away to Harlem, married a black man, and founded an all-black Baptist church in her living room in Red Hook. In this remarkable memoir, she tells in her own words the story of her past. Around her narrative, James McBride has written a powerful portrait of growing up, a meditation on race and identity, and a poignant, beautifully crafted hymn from a son to his mother.

FiftyForward Bordeaux members savor their memories in print and on video In partnership with The Watkins School of Art, Design and Film, FiftyForward Bordeaux members completed writing their memoirs as well as having some of their memories videotaped. Students from Watkins completed the filming of the video presentations of members and children from the Looby Community Center. The initial film screening was reviewed by participants on Feb. 10 at FiftyForward Bordeaux. The public will be invited to view the final cut, at a later date to be announced.

The Corporate Crowning Achievement Award will be presented to Dollar General Corporation. Each of these honorees exemplifies a giving spirit, and each is dedicated to serving others, not only through FiftyForward but through other nonprofit organizations in the community.

Beth Alexander is well known for her many philanthropic contributions to the community.

Numerous Middle Tennessee charities have benefited from her generosity, leadership and commitment as a volunteer. Additionally, Beth has been honored with several awards including the Mary Catherine Strobel Community Awareness Award for volunteerism.

Kim Harvey Looney regularly gives her time, talent and shares her resources to host, promote and showcase events and programs that benefit the community as well as older adults. In addition to co-chairing the 2009 Crown Affair, Kim continues her involvement by serving on the FiftyForward Advisory Council.

Dr. Paul Teschan has served as a volunteer with Operation Stand Down and as a hands-on mentor with the FiftyForward FLIP (Friends Learning In Pairs) program. By supporting honorably discharged veterans and helping at-risk students reach new heights, he has made a difference in the lives of countless individuals in our community.

This year, in recognition of extraordinary corporate philanthropy, a Corporate Crowning Achievement Award will be presented to Dollar General, an exceptionally generous supporter throughout our community.

As a member of the so-called “Millennial Generation” who grew up using a faulty, dial-up Internet connection, I’m amazed to think how engineers have taken just a couple decades to learn how to manipulate and control the web through wireless, handheld devices. (The title, What the Tech, was the brainchild of FiftyForward program exploring new tech director Sherry Coss.) Each session features new, trendy technologies and the applications (“apps”) that are gaining traction around the country. Now members are even beginning to plan their own meetings where they’ll share a new app they’ve recently found.

Why is What the Tech so appealing to members? By teaching the basics of working with new devices, classes break down the wall of intimidation that often comes with new technologies, and make apps and interfaces seem less harrowing. The program also enables members to keep in touch with friends and family by teaching Skype and FaceTime; to gain more home security with apps that remotely set alarms; and to connect with the community even when they cannot leave home.

Inspiring the young leaders of tomorrow

By Anna Claire Hoffman Executive Leadership Team Associate Aging is one of the few experiences that all humans have in common.

Regardless of race, origin or income, aging is a universal common connection we all share. Unfortunately, many don’t consider the importance of healthy aging until faced with a crisis.

Those in their 20s-40s (the Millennials and Gen Xers) are the next generation of community leaders. In the near future, many of them will become the caregivers for their aging parents.

According to Governor Haslam’s Task Force on Aging, Tennessee ranks in the bottom 10 states on all health and well-being measures. The time is now for the community to begin educating the younger demographic and to prepare resources and services that will be there when they or their family members need it most.

FiftyForward is making strides toward engaging this younger demographic in meaningful ways by launching its first ever Junior Board Committee (JBC).

In partnership with Young Professionals (YP) Nashville, the FiftyForward JBC supports the organization’s critical work with older adults in the community and bridges the gap between generations by providing social and volunteer engagement opportunities with FiftyForward clients and members.

The JBC offers members a unique experience by combining philanthropy with professional development.

“It’s an amazing feeling when we’re working on a volunteer project and I stop and think, wow, I’m actually making a direct impact on someone’s life just by doing something so small,” said member Carly Somerville.

The JBC offers members a unique experience by combining philanthropy with professional development. Many of the JBC members work in various fields across Middle Tennessee and are seeking an opportunity to network, learn about board governance and develop leadership skills.

Since the FiftyForward Board of Directors is such a dynamic group of experienced professionals, we developed a mentorship component where each of the JBC members can meet one-on-one with a board member in a similar profession.

By raising awareness of FiftyForward programs and services, the JBC is positively impacting Middle Tennessee’s aging population and causing other young professionals to stop and consider what aging means to them and how it could impact their life.

Aging is universal. It is up to us to do everything in our power to make sure that when the time comes—because it will—our community is equipped with cutting-edge services and resources to enrich the lives of older adults.

nominations, winning one in 1976. She is also a multiple Golden Globe nominee, all for The Carol Burnett Show. Through the decades since The Carol Burnett Show, Lawrence appeared in numerous sitcoms such as Laverne & Shirley, The Love Boat, Murder She Wrote, Roseanne, Diagnosis Murder and with friend and co-star Tim Conway in Yes, Dear. She guest starred as Mamaw in Hannah Montana and has even done voice-over work, most notably for Disney’s Phineas and Ferb. In addition to her spokesperson duties, she travels the country performing her stage show, Vicki Lawrence & Mama: A Two-Woman Show.

FF: Do you think the variety show will ever come back?

FiftyForward: When did you know that you had “made it?”

Lawrence: Well, that would have to be Mama, too, dontcha think?! Imagine playing an old lady when you’re 24! It has become so iconic. People love her like she’s a real person. I kinda have a love/hate with her, you know? If she has shown up today, you never would have asked, ‘Where’s Vicki?’ You would have said, ‘Oh, God, Mama’s here!’

Lawrence: Probably with Mama. I was 18 when I started on Carol’s show. I was pretty young, naïve, pretty green. It was kind of like going to the Harvard School of Comedy in front of America with amazing teachers. Mama happened about midway through the run. I started at 18 and she happened when I was 24. It was about that time when I finally felt like I had my legs under me and could play with the adults in the sandbox.

Lawrence: No, I don’t think so. It was the good old days of television, only three networks. Now there are so many channels and the television audience is so fractured. Variety now is Dancing with the Stars.

It’s not really variety. Sketches and music and such.

We had an orchestra and costumes. I don’t think the networks could afford it nowadays, especially when you can do reality television for next to nothing.

FF: What has been the oddest role you’ve ever played?

FF: What advice would you give to other older adults to stay young at heart and healthy?

Lawrence: Besides my advice to not look in the mirror?! It’s always a surprise when I look in the mirror: ‘I didn’t think I looked so old; I thought I looked much sassier than that!’ But seriously, you

have to keep moving—you know the old adage— you stop, you drop. The more active you are, the better you will feel.

I had a knee replacement this past summer. My New Year’s resolution is to keep moving. I have You have to keep a trainer, I do Pilates, moving—you know Gyrotonics. I learned to the old adage—you meditate, I love that. stop, you drop. The I found a meditation more active you are, teacher who gave me a mantra. There are times the better you will feel. that I slip away from -Vicki Lawrence it [meditating], but it really does help.

FF: Of all the things that you have gotten to do, acting, singing, voiceover work, what has been your favorite?

Lawrence: It’s all fun. I enjoy all of it. You know, I didn’t think I would get to do any of this because I thought I was going to grow up to be a dental hygienist. Clean teeth, marry a rich dentist and hang it up. My whole life has been an adventure.

Dear Connie Sue, I have two of these lamps and one wall mounted one. They were my grandmother’s. Any info you can give me about them would be appreciated. I’m thinking they are from the 1940s.

George Shinn is a family man, a philanthropist, and recently proved to Nashville that he is a powerful motivational speaker.

Dear Tracey, I agree. Your grandmother’s satin-glass lamps were made in the U.S. in the 1930s or 40s. The pair probably sat on a waterfall style dresser, while the wall-mounted lamp was centered over a standard sized bed. They are precious and very stylish. I like the silver socket, bracket and chimney ring.

He has championed athletes and individuals -including his children -- and in one of the first conversations with FiftyForward he shared that seniors (older adults) are among his passions because in his words, “they are the forgotten demographic” and “I am one.”

The set of three might sell for $100 at a paid show or as little as $45 at a downsizing sale. For safety reasons, DO NOT use that frayed, cloth cord to light these lamps. Have a professional electrician rewire the lamp if you intend to use it.

When George and his wife, Denise, moved to the Nashville area they brought a tradition that started in North Carolina when he owned the Charlotte Hornets. For years in that community, the Shinns hosted an annual Christmas gathering for older adults who may not have family or plans for the holiday.

Hi Connie Sue, I have this chair and would love to know how old it is, what type of chair it is, and how much it is worth. I didn’t know how to go about it, but saw your column in Forward Focus.

When they moved to the Nashville community they wanted to offer a similar event. The Christmas ShinnDig (as they named the Nashville event) was held in December 2014 for the first time at Lipscomb University -- which has now become the Nashville home for the soiree.

With approximately 800 older adult guests in attendance that first year, participants were given the gift of food, fellowship and music to lift their spirits.

Dear Pat, Your slender back chair with a small sturdy seat was made in the form of a spinner’s chair, but it is not.

Like the round padded seat chair (the chair I use while spinning wool into yarn), it was made in the late 1960s. My chair has a colonial motif upholstery. Velvet upholstered, turned post chairs like yours reminds me of the Gothic-setting soap opera from the late 1960s Dark Shadows.

Early spinner’s chairs (17th -19th centuries) were often made for a specific spinner, accommodating height and that of the spinning wheel. Spinning fiber into yarn on a foot pedal spinning wheel requires the full use of the arms from shoulder to fingertips. A proper chair provides a close-tothe-ground seat with no barriers between the spinner, the wheel and a basket of wool by the spinner’s side. Reflecting the skills of the woodworker, spinner’s chairs could be simply constructed with three legs on a plank seat or heavily decorated with incised carving. Both of our chairs would sell for less than $45 each.

This year was no exception as the Shinns brought together entertainers including Grand Ole Opry stars Buck White and The Whites, Jeannie Seely and Charlie McCoy. When George took the stage he immediately gained rapport with the audience in his opening remarks by stating, “I am a senior.” He continued, “We all have different problems in our lives. It may be family issues, health issues… or something else.” Shinn then confided that he also has such challenges and noted that he is a cancer survivor. He shared a number of memorable points worth noting, sharing and living.

He offered the following pointers as a roadmap to chart a more productive and fulfilling life: • • • • • •

Take care of yourself.

Get the best medical help possible.

Do all of the things you can do to keep healthy.

Don’t stop moving, keep your body in motion.

Do not retire from life; get involved.

Set plans and goals and work on those things.

He also underscored his belief in the power of prayer. Shinn stressed the importance of community, and taking care of oneself, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

What are you doing in those areas of your life? By George, if nothing less, this may just be good food for thought and most certainly a call to action.

Be your best ally. Engage. Enrich yourself and live your best life possible.
