FiftyForward artists featured in Arts at the Airport Watch for artwork

by FiftyForward affiliates (members, program participants, art instructors and staff) as part of the Flying Solo exhibit at Nashville International Airport - Concourse A. The artwork, featuring paintings, quilts, lapidary, handmade books and other art forms, will be on display through August 30, 2015.

The airport held a special reception for artists to mark the opening of the exhibit. We hope that you will take some time to see it the display when you are flying in or out of Nashville in the next few months.

Known to many art lovers worldwide for his use of vibrant and psychedelic colors, the artwork of Peter Max tells a story of life and perspective. As an artist baby boomers may recall from their youth, today he continues to resonate with collectors of all ages as he showcases the world with a palette all his own.

I

conic artist Peter Max has been painting the world with color since the 1960s. With pieces on display in more than 2,200 museums worldwide, Max has touched the world and accrued fame through his unique artistic style. His use of vibrant color combinations, bold lines, eyecatching graphics and diverse subject matter leave fans wondering who is the man behind the brush and where does he get his inspiration?

During an exclusive interview FiftyForward discovered that while Max’s artwork has influenced millions, there is more to be learned from his unique perspective on the world.

“I’m at my studio ready and energetic to go to work,” said Max. Imagine waking up each morning feeling rejuvenated and excited to take on the day. Sure, not all of us are waking up to an “enormously beautiful” 10,000 ft. multi-level studio with skylights and pristine white walls covered in our own vibrant masterpieces, but Max illuminates that the beauty of life is not based on the things we have, it’s seizing the

opportunities to live life with love each and every day.

“I’m in a beautiful world. I enjoy it. My colors are there.

My music is there. My wish to paint and create is there and my whole heart dances to music. And before you know it I’ve done three, four five paintings for the day.”

In a world where aging continues to be a growing topic, it seems that everyone is constantly searching for the elusive fountain of youth. What if someone said that there is no magic serum, brain game or state of the art surgery that will keep you forever young? What if someone said truth be told, the “fountain of youth” lies within ourselves and it’s up to each individual to keep it spouting? Max has found his fountain and keeps it quenched.

“Youth is being young.

1. Why did you join FiftyForward?

I was already familiar with the Donelson Station FiftyForward from being involved in the jewelry classes offered by Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society (MTGMS).

I was looking for a chance to do more fulfilling work for a nonprofit.

Jennifer Haynes, Director Coming to work here was a great FiftyForward Adult Day Services opportunity to support a nonprofit I already enjoyed, and have the chance to make a difference in people’s lives.

2. What special skills do you bring to the agency/community?

I wouldn’t say that I necessarily have special skills, but that I have a passion for helping others. I am open-minded with a willingness to learn and try new things and ideas. I also hope that my corporate experience will help me in making improvements to the program.

3.How do you achieve work/life balance?

I like to go to the movies, attend music concerts, try new restaurants and read. I also do lapidary and faceting through Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society (MTGMS), and serve on the board. I also listen to Weird Al Yankovic’s music any opportunity I get.

4. Nashville has been called the “IT” city as well as one of the best cities for a date night for “seniors” – what or where is your favorite place to hang out in Nashville?

The Schermerhorn and the Ryman are great places to take in music. Just walking Second Avenue can be really interesting to hear all the live music going on downtown. McNamara’s in Donelson has fantastic Irish food and I love to go there regularly.

5. FiftyForward is committed to lifelong learning and in support of this we advocate learning and trying new things, we call them “FiftyForward Firsts.” What’s on your list to do for the “first time?”

I want to see a show on Broadway, visit the Grand Canyon, and go digging for rocks in Montana. I’d also enjoy going on a cruise or travelling to a foreign country since I’ve already marked skydiving off my list.

Put yourself first so you can care for others “When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.”

While this quote is attributed to several strong and driven men, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and two Roosevelts, it very well could have been said by anyone who provides assistance and care for a loved one.

Everyone knows that life is made up of good and bad days with many days being a little of both. Caregiving follows that same pattern. What makes the difference can be as simple as which side of the bed you wake up on, if the day is an anniversary of a difficult event or if the song playing on the radio is happy and upbeat. It sounds simplistic, but our behaviors are largely fueled by our emotions, moods and how we are affected by our loved one’s needs and abilities.

Caregiving runs the gamut – it can be exhausting, rewarding, painful, pleasurable, poignant, sad and funny. While it is as individual to each person as personality and interests are, some aspects of caregiving are universal. Most people never regret the time they spend helping someone they love. It is important that every caregiver takes time for themselves.

When the person you are caring for is napping, you can nap too.

Discovering ways that your loved one likes to spend time can give you a few minutes to do things you enjoy – for example, while your father is listening to music, you can read or call a friend. If your mother is physically capable, you can have her join you in simple chores – snapping beans, dusting or straightening books on a shelf. Reminiscing about wonderful memories will do you both good.

When you have bad days, chalk it up to just that. If bad days are beginning to outweigh good ones, you may need to begin considering alternatives or asking for more help. FLIP tutors work to make math fun

If the stereotypical version of a math tutoring session involves rote memorization and dull flash card drills then the lessons led by FiftyForward’s Friends Learning In Pairs (FLIP) math tutors at Cumberland Elementary are anything but typical.

Tutors Ceci Sachs and Ed Jackson worked with six second grade students throughout the 2014-15 school year, employing a variety of strategies to engage and educate their students. Whether creating a customized hopscotch board to help a fidgety student stay engaged or opening up “Mr. Ed’s Store” to help students understand how math works in the real world, these FLIP tutors make mathematics fun and approachable for children who were identified by their teachers as needing extra help on math skills.

Educators are enthusiastic about this first year partnership at Cumberland Elementary.

“For second grade students at Cumberland Elementary, the FLIP program contributed to an overall increase in both confidence and academic knowledge in the area of math. The one-on-one format encouraged students to ask questions and make mistakes in a safe environment,” said Yvette Carter, school counselor and FLIP contact at Cumberland Elementary. And 2nd grade teacher Chriseni Pulse reports “I have seen tremendous growth in the children from working with the tutors.”

FLIP tutors were equally enthusiastic about the program. “The children were wonderful and I 6 | Forward Focus

thoroughly enjoyed working with them. My three boys were simply bright, friendly children who needed a helping hand in math,” said Jackson. And from former teacher Sachs, “As a teacher, I saw the fear of math daily in students K-12.

After retiring, I wanted to help students overcome their anxiety and see the importance of math in their daily lives. I have been both challenged and excited to work with the students, figuring out ways to reach each of them individually.”

And while this was the first year for math tutoring in a Davidson County school, FLIP math tutors have been successfully serving children at Williamson County’s Liberty Elementary school for seven years. With data supporting that Liberty students served by a FLIP math tutor consistently make significant academic gains, the FLIP program is expanding its math tutoring component across both Davidson and Williamson counties, with the goal of engaging 15 tutors and 50 students in the next school year. Approximately 135 volunteers will serve as literacy tutors in 2014-15.

Both literacy and math tutors for Davidson and Williamson counties are currently being recruited for the 2015-16 school year. Prospective tutors are required to complete an interview and undergo a background check. A one-day training session is held prior to placement in a local school

and all tutors are provided with high quality materials that support classroom instruction. FLIP coordinators and school staff provide feedback and instruction on effective tutoring strategies.

FLIP tutors must be age 55 or older, have at least a high school diploma and enjoy working with children. It is preferred that math tutors have a professional background that utilizes math strategies. FLIP Coordinators are based out of four of FiftyForward’s centers and serve locations throughout Williamson and Davidson counties.

FiftyForward RSVP honors its volunteers RSVP volunteers Kitty Calhoun and Neal Buchanan were presented the Flora McKean Award for outstanding tutoring in Davidson County during the Friends Learning In Pairs (FLIP) recognition events held the week of May 4. Kitty has served as a tutor at Buena Vista and Charlotte Park Elementary Schools for four and a half years and Neal Buchanan has served as a tutor at Pennington Elementary School for 14 years. The award is given each year in memory of educator Flora Elizabeth McKean.

Her nephew, Scott McKean, established the award in 1997 through an endowed gift in support of the FLIP program.

Congratulations to these outstanding tutors for their service.

RSVP volunteer Bob Bredensteiner honored FiftyForward RSVP is proud to announce that volunteer Bob Bredensteiner was recently named the winner for the Mary Catherine Strobel Award in the Capacity Building category. Bob has been an RSVP volunteer since 2007 and has tutored students at Gower Elementary and served as an RSVP Advisory Board member.

Bob’s most significant contribution, however, has come as RSVP’s data management specialist. Bob also serves as a trainer for the United Way of Middle Tennessee’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program where his skills allowed the program to serve more low-income Nashvillians who benefit from free tax services.

Don’t sweat exercise;

Do something active!

ith the average life expectancy far exceeding seventy years of age, the fitness industry has seen an encouraging trend in people ages 45-60 beginning regular exercise routines for the first time in their lives. This is a cool example of the saying “it’s never too late to start!”

I have been working with several clients recently many of whom are about to mark their 50th birthday and are trying a group class for the first time while others have registered for a couch to 5k program to train for their first race.

It’s fun to see these clients move out of their own comfort zones, especially when it sparks the whole family to join in. The example we provide for our children and grandchildren speaks volumes to them about their own responsibilities in maintaining their health for a lifetime.

We are fortunate to live in a city that supports the health and well-being of its citizens through Governor Haslam’s Healthier Tennessee Communities Initiative.

Mandy got the crowd moving at last year’s Viva la Diva Run with her rhythm sticks.

Here’s a fun fact! The City of Franklin was chosen as a pilot program for the Healthier Tennessee Initiative so there are many fun fitness activities offered around the city geared for the entire family. Here are a few of the activities the City of Franklin and our community has to offer: •

Walking Routes - Visit www.getfitfranklintn.org for list of routes and/or maps to get moving.

Hiking Trails – Natchez Trace Parkway and Percy Warner Park have entry level routes of moderate hikes ranging from one-to-three mile loops.

Many parks offer fitness activities including group workouts, and meet-up groups to walk.

Community Gardening – Raised bed gardens are starting to pop up. This is a great way to volunteer in the community, learn gardening techniques, and to get some exercise as a family while planting and harvesting food to help others.

•

“Trashercize” – Help beautify the green spaces along our city roads while getting some excellent cardio activity.

•

Water-focused exercise – Try kayaking, canoeing, paddle boating, paddle boarding activities on area lakes.

Mandy Oakes is enjoying her 40s and her active lifestyles.

Adventure on!

Fly like an eagle, soar like a bird: FiftyForward Knowles Center members complete zipline adventure to mark their FiftyForward First!

I

nspired by FiftyForward Madison Station’s fun trip to Fontanel’s zipline, members of FiftyForward Knowles Center decided to have a similar adventure. Three FiftyForward members and Knowles Program Assistant Casey Griffith braved the tall heights and strenuous hike to soar through the Fontanel treetops. Led by two Adventureworks employees, the group rode a total of eight lines of various lengths and speeds.

FiftyForward Knowles member, Norma, after learning about Madison Station’s daytrip, mentioned that she had never been ziplining and would like to try it. Here at FiftyForward, if a member wants to try something for the first time, we want to make it happen! This adventure was a FiftyForward First for all three Knowles members and was even on member Sharon’s bucket list. She plans to print a picture from the day and post it on her “bucket list bulletin board,” where she collects mementos as she checks items off her list.

Our ziplining leader, Michael, encouraged everyone to “stay in the present.” He wanted the group to imagine that each zipline was the first as well as the last in order to enjoy each one and not think about the distance to the end of the route. He urged us to observe the view around us and relax in the fun. Both leaders, Michael and Ed, kept up the energy of the group. FiftyForward is a premier, mission-driven nonprofit agency that dedicates its resources to improving the lives of its community members.

I am excited to continue and expand the current ways we meet our participants’ needs. I don’t consider that I have special skills, but I do like to have fun and think outside the box!

I believe there’s nothing that a good piece of dark chocolate or great glass of cabernet can’t fix. I also enjoy cycling, meditating and scrapbooking/cardmaking. Creating functional art keeps me out of trouble.

Whistlestop FiftyForward Madison Station held its “Sweet 16th” annual Whistlestop Dinner and Fundraiser on March 10, 2015. The event raised more than $25,000 to help fund the many programs, services, and activities offered at the center. Guests enjoyed a large silent auction and reception, followed by a fabulous meal catered by dinner sponsor CRAVE 1201 Catering.

Lelan Statom of NewsChannel 5 was the guest emcee and the highlights of the evening included the announcement of the Friday Night Music Jam Committee as the Madison Senior(s) of the Year, and David McMurry from the Madison-Goodlettsville Rotary as Conductor of the Year. Other candidates in the running for conductor this year were Lonnie Jones of the Kiwanis Club of Madison and Karen Ramsey, president of the Madison-Rivergate Area Chamber of Commerce. Together these candidates raised more than $6,000 for the center.

The entertainment for the evening was a fun dance medley performed by center members and local youth volunteers sponsored by Ambassadors Formalwear by Gilda.

Mayoral Candidate Forum AARP, The Council on Aging of Greater Nashville and FiftyForward presented a mayoral forum with candidates for the Office of the Mayor of Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County in May 2015. Get Smart about your mouth: FiftyForward offers free oral health and hygiene programs Tooth decay remains the most prevalent chronic disease in older adults, even though it is largely preventable.

Oral Health America and the American Dental Hygienists’ Association are expanding their long-standing partnership to deliver an oral health education workshop to older adults in the Nashville area and FiftyForward will host programs at three of its locations.

Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart About Your Mouth is an oral health education curriculum for older adults to be delivered at settings where they naturally congregate including senior centers, libraries, and places of worship. On June 17, 2015 the team will host a community service day in conjunction with ADHA’s national conference. Trained hygienists will be in the Nashville community to deliver the Tooth Wisdom: Get Smart About Your Mouth workshop in six different locations, three of which will be at FiftyForward: FiftyForward Bordeaux, FiftyForward Donelson Station and FiftyForward Madison Station.

ave you questioned lately how safe a driver you are? Or has a family member surprised you by questioning your ability to drive?

Driving is a tremendous key to independence. It provides access to our basic needs – the grocery store, doctor appointments, the bank, the pharmacy. It provides access to our livelihood – concerts, shows, club meetings. It provides access to family, friends and church.

Our philosophy of care is really quite simple: Focus on strengths, rather than weaknesses.

Never stop trying to communicate. Be kind, always.

It is daunting to think about not driving. However, most of us are expected to outlive our ability to drive by 7-10 years, according to the American Journal of Public Health.

As we age, changes occur in our abilities to see, hear, focus, and make quick decisions. Changes occur in our responses to our medications. Changes occur in our traffic laws and roadways. Therefore, changes occur in our ability to safely drive.

How do we compensate for these changes and keep driving safely for as long as possible? Here are some key points to follow: • Participate in a yearly eye exam and ask your eye doctor if your vision is safe for driving in both daytime and nighttime.

• Use eye glasses prescribed for seeing long distances when driving.

• Have your hearing checked routinely and wear prescribed hearing aids when driving.

• Ask your doctor and pharmacist to review your medications – both prescription medications and over-the-counter – for possible side effects that may impact your driving ability. Repeat this whenever medications change.

• Exercise regularly to increase strength and flexibility. Neck movements are needed to look around the vehicle. Shoulder strength and flexibility are needed to steer a vehicle in tight spaces.

Also, exercise increases blood flow to the brain to keep your mind sharp.

• Review driving habits regularly.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) offers two tools: 1. AAA Roadwise Review is an interactive computer-based self-screening tool that makes recommendations about driving. It takes 30-45 minutes.

2. AAA Drivers 65 Plus: Check your Performance is a self-questionnaire booklet with recommendations for driving.

• Brush up driving skills. This is great for everyone to do every few years. Better than just reading the drivers manual, consider one of the methods outlined in Table 1 (in sidebar).

• Be receptive to feedback from others. Twice a year ask a trusted friend or family member to ride with you and give feedback about your driving. If he or she expresses concern, listen carefully to the concerns and talk to your doctor.

In the meantime, it is important to plan ahead for the day when driving may not be a safe option. Consider what key alternative transportation options are available.

• Do you live close to a bus line for public transportation? If not, are you aware of the other public transportation options?

Do you have a medical condition that may qualify you for transportation assistance?

Do you live in a residential community that offers transportation assistance?

Are you comfortable with asking friends, family members or fellow church members for a ride? Don’t be shy or prideful. They are usually happy to help.

Here are some keys signs that may indicate the need to take action and change our driving habits or perhaps give up driving altogether: • Not seeing traffic signs, traffic lights or pedestrians.

• Having accidents or near misses.

• Weaving or veering out of the driving lane.

• Being passed frequently.

• Misjudging distances on the roadway or in traffic.

• Getting lost in a familiar area.

• Becoming easily frustrated or confused when driving.

• Difficulty putting the foot firmly on the brake pedal.

• Being jerky with vehicle starts and stops.

• Confusing the gas and brake pedals.

• Needing help or instructions from our passengers.

• Having other drivers honk at you.

• Having others express that they are concerned about your driving.

When there are concerns about our driving, it is important to talk with a physician. They are in a position to guide us. Many times physicians will refer patients to a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist or CDRS. A driver rehab specialist is in a position to help us carefully make decisions about our driving.

These are the key advantages to seeing a driver rehab specialist.

Driver rehab specialists do not have the biases that your friends and family members may have.

They can make suggestions or provide training to improve our driver safety and help us drive safely for a longer period of time, even years.

If you have a physical disability, they can advise you on adaptations to your vehicle to enable you to drive safely.

They can provide you with transportation resources if needed.

In the Middle Tennessee area, there are currently three certified driver rehab specialists.

Christy Sanders Horner, OTR/L, CDRS is an occupational therapist and certified driver rehabilitation specialist at Pi Beta Phi Rehabilitation Institute at the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center.

Oak rockers still hold value as do antique secretary desks Dear Connie Sue, I was wondering if you can tell me anything about this rocker. We have had the chair for 50 years and it was old when we got it. We have the spindles for repair.

--Hertha Oak furniture, mass produced around 1900, still remains popular. It has aged nicely because it was made from seasoned hardwood by skilled woodworkers.

Although some oak furniture made 20 years later was economically produced with thin paneled sides and a veneer of oak on the front, the three pieces pictured are solid oak.

Hertha’s armless rocker is usually described as a slipper rocker, used for sewing, nursing a baby, or changing shoes. A diminutive (smallish) rocker like this could easily tuck into a corner, keeping the extended rockers out of the way of toes. I most often see these little rockers in bedrooms.

The flat, decorated section on the back was steam pressed to form the raised decoration and pierced, spoke wheel in the center. These two slightly bowed pieces on the back may be hickory, because it can be steamed to hold this shape. The grain of oak, hickory and ash are similar.

I’m glad you’ve saved the broken spindles, but to easily replace them the

chair’s back may need to be loosened to slip them back into place. Know your limits and hire a professional woodworker as needed.

If the seat was stylishly upholstered and the spindles replaced, the rocker might be priced as much as $175 in a busy shop. As is and sold from your garage, I’d start the negotiations at $65.

Dear Connie Sue, A few weeks ago my mother brought me a family heirloom -- a secretary desk. We know that it came from her great, great, great grandfather in the late 1800s. It was originally stained with mulberries. About 25 years ago, my parents stripped it and re-stained it to its current color and had the mirror re-silvered. The mirror and curved glass are both original to the piece. We are unsure if he built it from scratch or bought it, but we think it may have come from a Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog.. Is there anything you can tell me about this piece, including value?

--Kathleen Dear Connie Sue, My husband, who is deceased, told me he purchased this piece at an estate sale. I do not know where or when. He had it when we got married 38 years ago. Is it a secretary and what is its value?

--Gail Both Gail and Kathleen’s oak case pieces were sold by Sears, Roebuck and Co. in their 1906 catalog. They called them combination bookcases, priced from $7.95 to $27.45. The drop-front desk area with fitted interior held household accounts and daily correspondence. By lifting the writing surface to an upright vertical position, your private papers were out of sight.

In the 1970s buyers gladly paid $750 for an oak side-by-side, today they are priced around $500 in a shop, and sell for less at auction or tag sales.
