FiftyForward and Vanderbilt University Medical Center host the Nashville launch of the All of Us Research Program Participate in this groundbreaking NIH study and become ONE in a milion!

At age 19, Eric Dishman was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer. The prognosis: nine months to live. Thanks to early access to pioneering research in precision medicine, which clarified the best treatment plan for him, he is alive and well almost 25 years later.

Dishman now directs the National Institutes of Health (NIH) All of Us Research Program, which is enrolling 1 million or more Americans to build the foundation for the future of precision medicine.

State Representative Brenda Gilmore becomes the first to officially sign up for the All of Us Research program study. The NIH study will follow participants for several years collecting data confidentially to further the study of health outcomes and treatments.

Sunday, May 6, marked the national launch of the All of Us Research Program. FiftyForward and Vanderbilt University Medical Center were honored to co-host one of seven launch day events across the United States giving Nashville, older adults, and FiftyForward prominent visibility.

As bluegrass and mariachi music filled the air and attendees visited vendor booths and heard inspiring remarks from elected officials and program supporters, FiftyForward Madison Station provided the perfect venue for the community education fair.

The mission of the All of Us Research Program is to accelerate health research and medical breakthroughs, enabling individualized prevention, treatment, and care for all of us. All of Us seeks to transform the relationship between researchers and participants, bringing them together as partners to inform the program’s directions, goals and responsible return of research information. These efforts include building trust among populations historically underrepresented in research. Participants will be able to access their own health information, summary data about the entire participant community, and information about studies and findings that come from All of Us. “Building a diverse participant community will be vital to the success of All of Us so we can address the many pressing health conditions that disproportionately affect underrepresented communities,” said Dara

Richardson-Heron, M.D., chief engagement officer of the All of Us Research Program. “The All of Us Research Program has the potential to help researchers better understand and begin chipping away at health disparities so that everyone can benefit from better health, better health care and exciting new breakthroughs.”

Participants are asked to share different types of health and lifestyle information, including online surveys and data from electronic health records (EHRs), which will continue to be collected over the course of the program.

Dishman recently said, “As we focus especially on bringing in those who have been left behind by traditional research, reaching older adults is key.”

FiftyForward is proud to have been chosen as one of four initial All of Us Research Program community partners funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to carry out the program. Our special focus is to ensure that older adults, rural Tennesseans and other individuals from groups historically underrepresented in biomedical research are educated about All of Us and encouraged to enroll so that their information is included in this effort.

As an agency whose mission is to support, champion and enhance life for those 50 and older, FiftyForward understands the importance of older adult contributions in all areas of our society. Health education is a strong component of the work that FiftyForward conducts to support older adults. In addition to an interest in their own health and wellbeing, we recognize that older adults have a deep desire to contribute to society in a long-lasting way. Caring for yourself as you care for loved ones

By Kristen Maloney Caring for a loved one is one of the most rewarding things we can ever do. It also can be the hardest and loneliest journey. Sharing the responsibility with paid caregivers, significant others or both can make the responsibility more easily managed. However, it can be difficult to decide when to ask for help.

By answering the following questions, you will gain a better understanding of why asking for help can be the most loving choice you ever make.

1. Are you asked or required to perform tasks that make you feel uncomfortable or are hard for you to do? A great example is bathing. This is a physically tiring task. It can also be emotionally difficult, especially with a loved one of the opposite gender, even if you are partners. Few of us are trained to manage bathing another adult. By having someone help, you can safeguard your feelings and health.

2. Do you neglect yourself by not having assistance from others? Many caregivers give up doing things they enjoy. You may miss deadlines or forget important dates. You may not be able to go to significant events such as your granddaughter’s dance recital or graduation. This can lead to frustration, anger or illness.

Taking time for yourself makes you a better caregiver.

3. Have you sought out resources that can be helpful?

Purchasing a few hours of care can give you a much needed break. Asking a friend or relative to help can forge a stronger relationship. It also gives the person receiving care someone else with whom they can talk and share time.

4. Do you feel that you have become a “worker” for your loved one, rather than a loving family member? After you finish the laundry, make dinner, pick up prescriptions and schedule three physician appointments, you most likely feel exhausted and unable to even carry on a conversation. That may be exactly what your loved one is craving – undivided attention to share their wishes, desires, fears and love for you. The times where we were truly with our loved one are what we all want to remember when the caregiving journey is complete.

5. Is there a contingency plan in place if you become ill or cannot provide care at the level that you have been? Seeking and using help from other family members or paid caregivers puts you in a position to more quickly access assistance in a true time of need. If you are starting from step one, asking for help, you may not be able to mobilize what is needed quickly or affordable. By planning ahead, you can make the best choices for your situation, rather than just living with the choices you have to make.

If you are not currently receiving help in caring for your loved one, take the simple first step of thinking about what would be helpful. Then talk with your family, significant others and most importantly, if possible, the person for whom you are caring. By sharing the planning process, you will begin to realize how important involving willing family members or professional caregivers may be in having an effective and loving caregiving experience.

FiftyForward Supportive Care Services World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15

FiftyForward Victory Over Crime advocates for older adult crime victims every day Each year, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is recognized on June 15. The United Nations initiated World Elder Abuse Awareness Day to raise awareness about the danger of elder abuse and to educate others about what can be done to prevent it and what to do if it is noticed.

This day is a subtle reminder of an abuse that is often much more prevalent than acknowledged in society.

Elder abuse is defined as a form of mistreatment resulting in loss or harm to an older adult. According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA) Approximately 1 in 10 Americans aged 60+ have experienced some form of elder abuse. Some estimates range as high as 5 million elders who are abused each year. One study estimated that only 1 in 14 cases of abuse are reported to authorities.

As our older population increases, along with our longevity, so does the chance of abuse of impacting the health, human rights and security for this segment of our population.

Why should we care?

For the abused, there is often no place to turn. The abuse often continues because there is fear of harm, repercussion and additional abuse. These abusive situations are also especially problematic if the abuser is a close friend, family member or “trusted” advocate.

What are some common risk factors?

Dementia

•

Mental health or substance abuse issues of an older person and/or a perpetrator

•

Social isolation

•

Poor physical health

How Can We Report Elder Abuse?

Programs such as Adult Protective Services (APS) and Long-Term Care Ombudsmen are here to help. For reporting numbers, use the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116 (eldercare.gov) If at any time you believe that an older person is in a life-threatening situation, contact 911 or the local police or sheriff’s department. If you are age 50 and older, live in Davidson County and feel that you have been victimized, please call FiftyForward Victory Over Crime at 615-743-3417 to get assistance.

Elder abuse can isolate individuals from society. This abuse also poses social and economic issues, creating health care and legal costs often shouldered by public programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

The National Center on Elder Abuse reports that women and individuals 80 and older are more likely to experience abuse. Factors such as dementia or poor physical health can increase older people’s isolation, which in turn puts people at greater risk of experiencing abuse or neglect.

Volunteer opportunities

FLIP volunteers come from all walks of life FiftyForward Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) matches adults age 55+ with elementary age students who need support with reading or math. Students and tutors work together one-on-one weekly for 30 minutes throughout the school year.

The ranks of FiftyForward Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) tutors are filled with retired teachers, librarians and principals; however, among the former educators are many volunteers with little or no professional educational experience, but a strong desire to help the next generation. For these volunteers, the opportunity to use the skills they developed in their professional lives to help the next generation is tremendously fulfilling. With the guidance and support of FLIP coordinators they quickly learn they can make a significant impact in the lives of their students.

Ammie Humphrey spent over 40 years as a nurse practitioner/midwife and has found the transition to tutoring to be quite natural, “In planning my retirement,” she recalls, “I asked the question ‘What can I do to continue to give Ammie Humphrey to others?’ When you look at the definition of a tutor it is one who guards, protects and watches over and has the care of another person. I felt that tutoring was the most generous and rewarding thing for me. The joy in the face of a child who has just completed reading his/her first book is priceless.”

Helen Wiley is a retired realtor who now tutors at Franklin Elementary School. “Reading gives you knowledge and knowledge is power,” said Wiley. “When one can read, all possibilities are opened — the

world just opens! There are so many amazing things to learn. If one can catch children on fire for learning they become lifelong learners and a treasure to their community.”

Husband and wife team Sam Smith and Kathy Keyes retired from careers in archeology and computer programming and have found fulfillment as tutors at Hickman Elementary.

“Being a part of FLIP is one of the most rewarding volunteer opportunities in the Nashville area. You will be constantly amazed by the stories you hear and the joy you get from feeling you are making a difference in a child’s life,” said Smith. Keyes adds, “My favorite part of tutoring is figuring out what best motivates a particular child to want to read and I agree with Sam that being a part of FLIP is one of the most rewarding volunteer opportunities in the Nashville area. Helping a child have a happy, successful school life is a fine feeling.”

Retired engineers Maryl Linn and Ed Jackson have found considerable joy in tutoring. “One of the plans I’ve always had for my retirement was to help with reading assistance. When I met a terrific person who said her favorite project was working with FLIP, I decided to give tutoring a try. Not having had a teaching career, FLIP provided excellent training. I worked with three charming students this past

year, and I hope I made a small difference in their lives.

I’ve also met some wonderful adults,” said Linn.

Jackson has served as a FLIP tutor for three years and especially delights in helping students with their math skills. “I help students with math because math frequently becomes an unnecessary barrier to otherwise good students’ confidence and progress in education,” he said. “By not ‘getting it’ early on in their education, they are subjected to ever more complicated math education without the foundation. Alternatively, if permitted to do so, they just bail out of technology, sciences and math altogether. I’ve seen in my own educational experiences that if a child can just get help soon enough to get over the initial hump they can become good or even great in math-heavy educational and career paths.”

This year, one of Jackson’s students at Glencliff Elementary was presented with the award for the most improved math student in the entire school, a strong indicator that FLIP tutoring, and Jackson’s guidance in particular, has a profound impact. continued on page 7

FLIP is the signature program of the FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), a division of Senior Corps. Senior Corps is a federally funded program that engages older adults across the country in meaningful volunteer service that provides demonstrated community impact.

The Flora McKean Award is given each year to two outstanding FLIP volunteers who have provided invaluable support and enrichment to students and for their length of service. The award is endowed

by Scott McKean, longtime FiftyForward supporter and former FiftyForward Board president, and is named to honor his aunt Flora McKean, a dedicated teacher.

The FiftyForward All of Us Research Program also engages older adults as Peer Ambassador volunteers to help spread the word about the importance of participation in All of Us. After training, Peer Ambassadors spend 10-20 hours per month attending health fairs, offering community presentations, replenishing literature and assisting with technology-based questions during enrollment.

Because All of Us currently only offers enrollment online, FiftyForward will be providing one-on-one monthly appointments at each of our seven locations to provide technical assistance to those in need. Peer Ambassadors will receive a monthly stipend from the program, and they must be age 50 or over. “I have been a volunteer all my life,” said retired radiologic technologist and Peer Ambassador John Tanner. He added, “This may be the single most important volunteer job I have ever had.”

Ultimately, the All of Us Research Program will be a rich and open data resource for traditional academic researchers as well as citizen scientists — and for everyone in between.

FiftyForward needs peer ambassadors to help spread the word about Precision Medicine and the All of Us Research Program. We need enthusiastic individuals to join in our journey to educate and excite others about this program. If you want to help change healthcare for generations to come, we would love for you to become an All of Us Peer Ambassador.

Peer Ambassadors will work alongside the All of Us team to help manage marketing materials at FiftyForward centers, attend health fairs and community events to educate and engage older adults, and assist in facilitating enrollment in the All of Us Research Program, among other duties.

The Peer Ambassadors are required to join the All of Us Research Program as participants. They must also be at least 50 years of age, be able to assist in answering basic technology questions with phones and tablets, and be able to demonstrate a knowledge and appreciation of Precision Medicine and the All of Us Research Program. We will provide training and support to help you to feel confident about your understanding of All of Us and about the technology used in the program.

Through healthy food and visits from caring volunteers, FiftyForward Meals on Wheels (MOW) provides hope to our older adult customers at risk from hunger and loneliness. At FiftyForward MOW, we have provided and prepared nutritious meals in-house since 1969; however, in the past few years we have initiated a process to examine the best way to deliver the highest quality food to our customers.

Now, almost 50 years after MOW’s inception, we are welcoming new community partnerships. Beginning in the summer of 2016, FiftyForward piloted a small partnership with The Nashville Food Project (TNFP) which this year will become a full partnership - with FiftyForward purchasing from TNFP all lunchtime meals for FiftyForward MOW and FiftyForward Adult Day Services programs.

FiftyForward’s mission is to support, champion and enhance life for those 50 and older. TNFP’s mission is to bring people together to grow, cook and share nourishing food, with the goals of cultivating community and alleviating hunger in our city. Through this community partnership, we combine forces to maximize the benefits of FiftyForward’s 60+ year robust experience in service delivery to older adults and TNFP’s high-quality healthy meal preparation.

FiftyForward Meals on Wheels served more than 19,104 meals to 135 older adults in FY 2017.

More than 300 hot holiday meals were served on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. According to the organization Feeding America: In 2016, 2.8 million (8%) households with seniors age 65 and older experienced food insecurity.

The number of food-insecure seniors is projected to increase by 50 percent when the youngest of the Baby Boomer Generation reaches age 60 in 2025.

The FiftyForward Spring Challenge Giving Campaign is underway through June 30!

In an AARP national survey, more than 35% of adults 45+ felt lonely and isolated. That equates to nearly 42 million older adults. Loneliness and social isolation can have serious medical and social consequences for older adults. Social isolation has been linked to higher rates of heart disease, cancer, depression, diabetes, and suicide.

FiftyForward programs make a significant difference in the prevention of isolation and loneliness for older adults. FiftyForward centers offer older adults a “home away from home” where they can actively engage in a variety of programs that stimulate the mind, move the body and create bonds of friendship and camaraderie with others. Older adults can share similar interests and make new friends.

FiftyForward Supportive Care Services gives older adults access to vetted resources to keep them independent and active in making decisions about their care. They are assigned a trained, empathic care manager to help guide the way.

CyberSeniors Computer Program June 19–July 12th presented with the Bordeaux Library This program puts teens and seniors together to help seniors develop basic digital literacy skills. We plan to have three teens working with us during this pilot and 10 | Forward Focus

• We will meet each Tuesday and Thursday June 19th-July 12th.

• We plan for a morning (10–11:30 a.m.) group and an afternoon (12:15– 1:45 p.m.) group every Tuesday.

• These will be group class sessions with one of our instructors.

• On Thursdays, the seniors will have one-on-one time with their assigned teen mentor for approximately 50 minutes.

• At the conclusion of the program, there will be a graduation ceremony.

• Each senior will receive a certificate of completion and a tablet.

Graduation date is tentatively set for July 17, 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. at the Bordeaux Library.

Community volunteers and Nashville leaders Jana Lisle Parham, D. Billye Sanders, Eleanor Lawson Willis and Nissan North America were honored as FiftyForward marked its 29th annual Crown Affair. The Crown Affair, a FiftyForward signature fundraising event, raises funds to benefit the seven FiftyForward lifelong learning centers in Davidson and Williamson counties as well as agency programs and services such as FiftyForward Care Management, FiftyForward Meals on Wheels and FiftyForward Adult Day Services.

FiftyForward Patricia Hart Building was transformed to a beautiful event space for the annual fundraiser that welcomed more than 225 guests including board members, community leaders, and longtime supporters of the agency. The silent auction, live music and reception gave guests a chance to mix, mingle and make connections.

FiftyForward joins NIH in launching the All of Us Research Program to advance precision medicine The National Institutes of Health opened national enrollment for the All of Us Research Program on May 6 — a momentous effort to advance individualized prevention, treatment and care for people of all backgrounds — in collaboration with FiftyForward and other partners. The official launch date was marked by community events in cities across the country as well as an online event.

FiftyForward co-hosted the launch day celebration with Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. This free, community educational fair was held at FiftyForward Madison Station and included outdoor entertainment, food trucks, vendors, chair massages, health screenings and giveaways. A nationally-streamed speaker’s program was emceed by NewsChannel5

Meteorologist Lelan Statom. The local program included speakers Nashville Mayor David Briley; U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tennessee; Tennessee Rep. What is AMP®?

The goal of the Aging Mastery Program® is to empower older adults to make and maintain small but impactful changes in their life. For each of these classes, participants receive basic educational materials developed by NCOA along with a facilitator’s expertise in the subject area. Participants also receive a manual that has a checklist of potential next steps and a system for tracking behaviors. They earn points for positive actions and rewards. Program completion is celebrated with an agency-wide graduation.

Lee has developed and conducted “healthy aging” programs for other Nashville organizations.

Get help for all your technology needs during Deloitte Technology Day Every year, FiftyForward is a welcome recipient of Deloitte Impact Day. This is a day set aside for Deloitte employees to give back to our community.

FiftyForward welcomes these tech-savvy volunteers into our centers as they help FiftyForward members and staff decipher all their technology questions.

Deloitte team members will be on hand at all FiftyForward centers to help you learn about technology. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced techie who wants to learn how to use new apps, there is something for everyone during these technology days.

Sept. 2–12: Alaska Cruise Tour The tour begins in Anchorage. Travel by motor coach to Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge for a two-night stay with a choice to visit Denali National Park. FiftyForward and NPT

NPT and FiftyForward are perfect partners to discuss “Aging Matters” In case you have not caught Nashville Public Television’s fabulous series, NPT Reports: Aging Matters, here’s a gentle nudge. Like NPT’s other programs, Aging Matters offers valuable tips and information you can’t find anywhere else.

The series was launched a few years ago and explores a range of topics related to aging with great care and candor through evidence-based stories from partners across Middle Tennessee, including FiftyForward.

Hosted by singer/songwriter Kathy Mattea, NPT’s Aging Matters includes Economics of Aging, Aging in Place, Caregiving, Healthy Aging, Abuse and Exploitation, Aging & the Workplace, Nutrition and Aging, and End of Life.

The newest installment, Loneliness and Isolation, premieres Thursday, May 31, at 8 p.m. on NPT and brings home another reality facing older adults. When it comes to health and older adults, medical professionals suggest a number of societal factors, including isolation, that may contribute to some of today’s poor health outcomes. For example, we are now a more sedentary society, we work and live longer and we have a high level of stress.

Cedar Chests hold memories and value Dear Connie Sue, Can you tell me what this cedar chest is worth? It is quite ornate in the front with what looks like a “leather” family crest in the middle. I tried looking up the company, but I’m not sure if Otto or Edward Roos made this piece. I saw one on eBay with the same feet, but the front was different. I’d appreciate any ideas on the value.

In the early to mid-1900s, cedar and cedar lined chests were marketed as hope chests for high school graduates and newlyweds.

All cedar chests without fine wood exteriors were sold for utilitarian purposes at a lower price. EBTH (Everything but the House) sold one in 2016 for $85. There were fourteen bidders involved in the sale. That’s good news. Today’s buyers find cedar chests a worthwhile purchase as did we and our mothers.

Most homes I visit have a cedar chest or cedar-lined chest. Inside, I typically find quilts and blankets, World War II uniforms and related period accoutrements. Many times I watch my clients marvel over the newspaper used to line the bottom of the chest. They often exclaim, “Mother/Grannie must have saved this dress in the 30s, just after they moved from … or started housekeeping in …” Cedar chests often hold things that hold memories.

All too often we think if it’s in the chest it is safe. Quite frequently items are damaged from unintended neglect. Cloth that touches cedar, or any wood, is susceptible to what we call rust stains. The acid in wood leeches onto cloth and makes a brown stain. You can prevent this by buffering the good stuff from the wood with cotton cloth. Let your old sheets take the “rust stain,” not the fine and treasured linens.

Going forward we need to think of cedar chests as a safe, if buffered, place to store wool and silk items. Cedar repels the insects who like to eat protein … moths come to mind. Insects can be very destructive. If linens aren’t stored clean, removed occasionally, examined and folded differently, bugs will find a quiet, not so cedar-smelling spot to nest and the resulting effect on your treasured memories will be less than satisfactory. When you think of cedar chests, think of the memories you may be preserving for generations to come.
