Brenda Gilmore shows her love for community through involvement in Hats Off to Bordeaux!, a FiftyForward signature fundraising event

T

his year marks the 8th annual Hats Off to Bordeaux! event, a luncheon and festive hat fashion show where community leaders, sponsors and members of FiftyForward Bordeaux come together to celebrate their community. Brenda Gilmore, State Representative, whose constituents are from the Bordeaux and Whites Creek area, has played host to this event since its inception.

Gilmore sees this involvement as just a natural progression of her interest in volunteering and helping people.

“A pathway to giving back” When she was a young girl, Gilmore recalls organizing a neighborhood recycling program as a way to make money and as a way to clean up her neighborhood. She also recounts an early involvement in her church, teaching Sunday school and visiting nursing homes to sing to residents.

As a young mother, Gilmore was a regular attendee at PTA meetings, organizing school events, traveling on school trips as a frequent chaperone and at one time even served as a foster parent.

Many may remember Gilmore from her 20 years working in Vanderbilt Mail Services and Recycling Services. Gilmore was still working at Vanderbilt when the political “bug” bit her. It was then she heard that a friend, Andrei Lee, was running for judge and she volunteered to work on the campaign. She found that she had a particular talent: when she asked people if they could do certain tasks, they always would figure out a way to say “yes.” People constantly encouraged her to run for office.

She had been volunteering in her community since childhood but was looking for a larger way to contribute to the wellbeing of the city’s constituents, so she ran. She got on the ballot as a “write in” candidate for committee member for District 1 and won and thus started her political career.

“Identify skills and issues important to you” Gilmore believes we need more women to get involved in our communities and in politics.

She says, “Women have the skill set and the background, but sometimes we don’t have the confidence. Women have the skill set— empathy, ability to listen, and organize – that

often isn’t valued, especially as a “Southern” girl ... asking for money is a difficult thing to do.”

Gilmore suggests individuals should “identify the issues that are important to you and work in those areas. Find what you are passionate about, and you will make the biggest difference if you focus your attention and abilities in those areas. You can spread yourself too thin and burn yourself out.”

FiftyForward Bordeaux becomes a center When she was president of the FiftyForward Board of Directors several years ago, Gilmore worked with community leaders to create a space where Bordeaux members could come together as a community. She was instrumental in securing the old Bordeaux library property so it could become one of the seven FiftyForward lifelong learning centers.

Gilmore knew that “FiftyForward could provide good, wholesome activities for seniors and if one is healthy mentally and emotionally, it would lead one to be healthy physically.”

Brenda Gilmore’s daughter, Erica, is a lot like her mother in her passion for community.

Currently, Erica Gilmore serves as the Council member for District 19 in Metropolitan Government of Nashville. Not only does she Brenda Gilmore walks the runway serve the city like her mom, she has also graced the runway for Hats Off, embracing her mother’s love of hat fashion. Many attendees look forward to seeing this exuberant mother-daughter duo at the hat fashion show each year.

Melvin Fowler, the new Center Director for FiftyForward Bordeaux remarks, “This will be my first Hats Off event, and I lcan’t wait to see the fabulous hat fashion show that everyone raves about. I look forward to the community celebrating with us.”

“Tipping a hat” to Bordeaux When asked how the idea of Hats Off to Bordeaux came about, Gilmore said it seemed like a wonderful dovetail between the idea of “tipping one’s hat” to the Bordeaux community and celebrating the African American community’s love of Sunday church hats. The fancy hats and dressing up for church services signify a reverence for faith and the coming together of community. As she prepares to host the 8th annual Hats Off to Bordeaux! event, Gilmore hopes the community will revel in all its progress and celebrate all that is good about Bordeaux.

Find support and resources for family caregivers at FiftyForward

By Jackie Lazzaro, Intern with FiftyForward Supportive Care Services It is no surprise that the United States’ population is growing and living longer. How does this trend relate to those in the role of family caregiver? By the year 2020, the number of caregivers in the United States is expected to increase from 43.5 million to 45 million (National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, 2015; AARP, 2016). As the number of caregivers continues to increase, so does the number of individuals in need of a caregiver. The growing population and “Graying of America” are two primary reasons for this surge. By 2020, it is expected that at least 117 million individuals will be in need of a caregiver (NAC and AARP, 2015; AARP, 2016). Therefore, Rosalyn Carter was very accurate when she stated, “There are only 4 kinds of people in the world, those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.”

Many who are or have been caregivers describe the onset of the new life role as a surprise. It was a role that came on suddenly, one they were not prepared for, but wish they had been. Author Gail Sheehy describes her experience as family caregiver for her husband in her work, Passages in Caregiving: Turning Chaos into Confidence (2010). Sheehy states, “I didn’t expect it. I wasn’t prepared for it. Nobody briefs us on all the services we are expected to –Rosalyn Carter, former perform when we take on this role.

And I had no idea that nearly 50 million other American adults were stumbling along the same unpredictable path – trying to take care of their parents or other relatives or supporting a partner through chronic illness. The prevalence of this mostly ignored passage is staggering: in almost one-third of American households, somebody is serving as an unpaid family caregiver.”

Nancy L. Kriseman, LCSW, of Geriatric Consulting Services, said, “Caregiving will never be a one-size-fits-all.” This point of view is important when deciding how to best provide support and resources for the family caregivers in our life. As each of us are unique in our needs and life experiences, so are family caregivers. Family caregivers may experience a significant burden in the areas of finances, life balance, and emotional and physical health. In order to provide a 4 | Forward Focus

better life balance for caregivers, we must first get to know the individual and their individual needs so we can best serve and support them as they work to achieve a more balanced caregiving lifestyle. Only 16% of caregivers reported that a health care provider has asked them what they need to take care of themselves (NAC & AARP, 2015). Older adult volunteers serve veterans and military members through FiftyForward RSVP

FiftyForward FLIP tutor Lillian Schklar honored with 2017 Direct Service Volunteer Award

Finding ways to thank veterans and active duty military members continues to be one of the most popular and rewarding volunteer activities for adults 55 and over.

FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) provides a variety of ways for older adults to give back to those who have and are dedicating their lives to military service.

A veteran himself, RSVP volunteer Fred Frazier serves as a van driver for the Nashville VA Medical Center transporting FiftyForward RSVP volunteer Fred Frasier patients back and forth for their medical appointments. Fred volunteers four hours every week and says “I get a chance to help another vet get to the hospital or to get home.”

Jack Blier is one of many RSVP volunteers who serves as a host at the USO Welcome Center located at the Nashville International Airport, providing a warm welcome for retired and active duty military passing through our city’s busy travel center.

FiftyForward FLIP tutor Lillian Schklar was one of the many Middle Tennesseans honored for outstanding volunteer work at Hands On Nashville’s 31st annual Mary Catherine Strobel Volunteer Awards, presented by Advance Financial.

The annual event recognizes volunteers for their outstanding contributions to the community.

The Direct Service Volunteer Awards recognize individuals who have contributed significant volunteer time, energy and/or resources to support an agency’s constituents.

Lillian Schklar received the 2017 Direct Service Volunteer Award in the ages 50-plus category for her tutoring work with the FiftyForward Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) program. She is a fixture in the school where she tutors, having logged hundreds of service hours in more than a decade. She works not only to improve her students’ academic skills, but to develop loving friendships with them.

For volunteers who prefer to take part in a one day project to benefit the military, FiftyForward RSVP sponsors a special annual event as part of the nationwide 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.

On Monday, Sept. 11 2017, FiftyForward RSVP will sponsor the annual “Fill the Truck” event at select area Kroger stores in Davidson and Williamson counties to benefit the USO and the military members they serve.

From 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11, volunteers are needed to hand out donation suggestion flyers at select Kroger stores and collect donated goods (non-perishable snacks and food items). Items will then be donated to the USO Welcome Centers.

USO Welcome Centers, located at Fort Campbell, the Nashville International Airport and the Middle Tennessee Entrance Processing Station, serve thousands of military members and recruits annually, offering a home away from home for those who serve our country. The donations gathered at this annual “Fill the Truck” event help provide refreshments for those serving our country as they pass through these USO centers.

“September 11th is a day of history, emotion and reflection,” said FiftyForward RSVP Director Robin Johnson. “For Americans it is also a day of service that provides an opportunity to join neighbors and local leaders to rekindle the compassion and unity shown on that day.”

FLIP program honors two volunteers with Flora McKean Award

Foster Grandparent Program receives grant from Nashville Predators Foundation

The Flora McKean Award is given each year to an outstanding FLIP volunteer who has provided invaluable support and enrichment to students and for their length of service. The award is endowed by Scott McKean, longtime FiftyForward supporter and former FiftyForward Board president, and is named to honor his aunt Flora McKean, a dedicated teacher.

This year the FiftyForward FLIP program honored two exceptional tutors with its highest honor. The first recipient is Betsy Malone. For more than five years Malone has tutored children at Fall-Hamilton Enhanced Option Elementary. With a background as a former educator for 25 years, Betsy Malone believes that all children truly want to be successful. Children and learning are her passion so as a tutor she taps into their innate curiosity to spark their interest.

FiftyForward Foster Grandparent Program is thankful to the Nashville Predators Foundation for providing $3,000 for tutoring supplies. This generous contribution will help our 70 volunteers as they work with more than 1,200 children in Metro Nashville schools and child learning centers.

The FiftyForward Foster Grandparent Program is looking for a few good grandparents to take Nashville’s children to the next level of success.

In addition Jean Doyle won the award for the Northeast Davidson County Schools. Doyle has been tutoring with FLIP for 10 years at Taylor Stratton Flora McKean Award honoree Elementary School. Before Jean Doyle and FiftyForward FLIP giving her time volunteering for coordinator Bethany Peadro FLIP she was a prekindergarten teacher and a substitute teacher in Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools for 9 years. She is a dedicated tutor volunteering twice a week and always making sure her students are cherished and growing academically.

Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) places volunteer reading and math tutors in elementary schools in Davidson and Williamson counties.

June is Men’s Health Month FiftyForward, where everyone knows your name

Meet member Sam Eaton, poet and artist

When people come to FiftyForward, they often don’t realize how their lives might change for the better. Sam Eaton, FiftyForward Madison Station member, has a wonderful story of connection, assistance and belonging.

Formerly homeless, Sam lost his roommate, a friend for whom he was a caregiver. He ended up in a group home, lonely and grieving. Then he discovered FiftyForward Madison Station and now comes to the center daily. He is an artist and writer and loves to spend time sitting by the radio while painting, drawing or writing.

At first he couldn’t afford AccessRide so the staff gave him free passes so he could come to the center as they worked to get him connected with Metro Nutrition. Now he rides for free and enjoys a hot meal at the center.

He has found fellowship and a sense of belonging at the center, making connections with staff and members alike. He loves to share his drawings and writings with everyone.

We’d like to share one of the many writings from Sam as we celebrate spring and summer here in Tennessee. Enjoy!

Spring’s already on its way It’s only mid-February, but Spring’s already on its way, as swelling buds and short grasses of green toss softly on the breeze to greet the day, having just emerged within the past week. First crocuses rise up with bright yellow blooms in a little group on a hillside as a honeybee mingles among them and hums its ageless tune. A small, white butterfly alights upon delicate plants to gently assure all that Spring will be bursting forth very soon, without hesitation and with great proliferation.

Heavy dew covers all at just a few degrees above frost, and light fog forms with the warming sunrise, to rise into the sky – a sky alive already with the love songs of birds, that convey perfectly Spring’s spirit of love and light and life. All of Middle Tennessee anticipates Spring.

A stream flows on below, with a blueness and a clarity that appear only at the beginning of Spring – especially fresh and inviting to the Creation that surrounds it. The rushing waters echo an enthusiastic rhythm in the still of the morning, a rhythm that is surely a harbinger of the great positive spirit of Spring. And everything awaits the first blossoms of Spring as a sure sign of Spring’s beginning. Perhaps in another week.

Senior athlete runs in memory of his daughter; journey leads to competition in Boston Marathon and to June’s National Senior Games Carlos Cobos, 78, a FiftyForward friend and senior athlete, found hope, healing and new beginnings through running. Cobos will be competing in early June with several Tennessee-based senior athletes at the National Senior Games held in Birmingham, Alabama. His zest for life and running came from the most unusual circumstances.

In 1979, he and Nilda lost their 4-year-old daughter, Nicole, to cancer.

At the time they were living in Boston, Massachusetts, and Nicole was the youngest of their three girls. Their grief lasted for months and Cobos recalls going to see the Boston Marathon for the first time in April of that year. He said he remembers the anguish and pain runners endured after running 26.2 miles and immediately wanted to experience the same pain as their precious Nicole had endured during her six months of surgeries and chemotherapy. From that point forward he committed to run Boston (the Marathon) the following year in memory of Nicole. He says, “I was not into running at the time so I started by just running around the block a few days later. In 1980, I ran and finished the Boston Marathon in about four hours in memory of Nicole -- although I ran unofficially which was okay at the time -- and I have kept running for 37 years.”

Cobos says he loves running half marathons (13.1 miles) and runs at least two every year.

After he retired in 2005, he learned about the State Senior Olympics and began running competitively in track events at Athletes from across the state will compete at the National Senior Games in June. In 2009, he also competed in these events at the National Senior Games in San Francisco, California.

Cobos says that it is a great honor to represent the state of Tennessee in Birmingham at the National Senior Games in June. Every state will be sending its best athletes and the only requirement is to compete at your best level. “We don’t have to win a medal to find fulfillment at the games,” he adds. “Just being there is fulfillment enough because we are all a part of a great family of National Senior Athletes with dreams and goals of being young again and reliving the joys we once experienced at a younger age.”

FiftyForward is pleased to announce we launched a ten-week health and wellness package for members 55 years and older.

This series of classes, the Aging Mastery Program® (AMP®), began at each FiftyForward center in early April.

The program, developed by the National Council on Aging (NCOA), was offered at all seven of our FiftyForward lifelong centers in Davidson and Williamson counties. FiftyForward members are participating in these classes for free as a result of a generous grant received from the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee earlier this year.

What is AMP? The goal of the Aging Mastery Program® is to empower older adults to make and maintain small but impactful changes in their life. The classes explore navigating longer lives, physical activity, sleep, healthy eating and hydration, financial fitness, medication management, advanced planning, healthy relationships, falls prevention, and community engagement.

For each of these classes, participants receive basic educational materials developed by NCOA along with a facilitator’s expertise in the subject area. Participants also receive a manual that has a checklist of potential next steps and a system for tracking behaviors. They earn points for positive actions and rewards all culminating in a FiftyForward center-wide graduation ceremony to be held at FiftyForward Donelson Station on Friday, June 30 at 11:30 a.m.

One of my FiftyForward Firsts was the St. Jude Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon this past April, which also happened to be the day we had the heat and humidity warning, making race coordinators move the start time up by 30 minutes. In other words it was blazing by 7:30 a.m. Since this was my first time running this race and a half marathon, my goal was to finish the race period. I have been training, but with that hot and humid air coming at you around mile 9-10 you have those “what the heck was I thinking” thoughts trickling through your head. But I did finish, as did my mom, Diana.

This also happened to be her first marathon, too! Once you cross the finish line, you become invincible. Of course after you eat a banana, down a Gatorade, chug some water, and eat some pretzels, then you feel invincible.

Now that I have my first half marathon under my belt, what to do next … oh look, another half marathon is coming up! Number two is May 22, 2017 in Fredericksburg , VA. I’m running the Historic Marine Half (again with my mom, and sister-in-law this time) while my oldest brother does his first off road triathlon the day before.

Let’s just say the family that runs and “tri’s” together stays together.

Relationships are best enjoyed offline We can’t know each other’s stories or even think we do, from typing done quickly on a phone and a whim. Two thumbs, for most folks. (I type with all ten fingers and I still don’t get the stories right.) What were we like before Facebook, before Twitter and the World Wide Web? Did we misunderstand each other as much as we do now? Did we get politics mixed up with our prayers for each other, did we “like” and “love” our friends whether or not they liked our candidate in the election? Were we so sensitive to that atmosphere that we refrained from saying what we thought, because maybe we were on the “wrong side” and didn’t want to get in a dust-up with the relatives or old roommates?

Truth is, no one is a Republican or a Democrat in a hospice room. Or a delivery room.

Wherever our stories are told. Which is everywhere. And best told offline.

My dad, a Kansas farm boy from way back, went to college and pledged a fraternity, where being from a large family came in handy. (“Father, Son and Holy Ghost, one who eats fastest gets the most!”) He got drafted and met and married my Yankee mother back East, voted for Kennedy like any good Irishman, and moved to California. From there he got as liberal as a praying Catholic could get. On trips home, phone calls, and in letters, dad and his dear siblings

knew that there was plenty more to jaw about than who was in the White House or why. And I should remember that today when I read Facebook posts.

Nobody loved each other more than the nine Sheahan kids (and their spouses). No forty cousins, their children, are more fiercely loyal. There are too dang many of us to know all of our stories, but we try. Sure, the political posts go rolling by. But no one pays much heed. We’re too enamored by the goofy grins posted of our cousin Wendel, who thought he’d grow old alone and was surprised and fell in love with the mail lady, Christine. And there’s a video posted of Uncle Byron and his fiddle -- which, despite late-life lessons, sounds nothing like a catfight and a lot like love. Our dear cousin Sarah, in her last months here on earth, found out she was treasured by the entire state of Kansas and half the world, and Facebook helped.

Facebook is indeed good for prayers and love if you have cancer. If we’d had it when dad was sick, it would have helped on some levels.

On the other hand, his brother Dennis came to see him, three or four times, from Austin. His sisters Judy and Rita Ann, too, and his niece, Dr. Teresa. Cards, letters, phone calls. Hands to hold. Truth is, no one is a Republican or a Democrat in a hospice room. Or a delivery room.

Wherever our stories are told. Which is everywhere. And best told offline.

This can sound complicated and timeconsuming when you think about traditional cost-saving measures like coupon clipping, but there are countless digital resources to efficiently manage your personal finances.

One of the easiest ways to save money without taking the time to scour store ads is through mobile apps that find rebates through your recent purchases. Apps like Ibotta and Checkout51 allow you to scan in receipts from recent grocery store runs, and they’ll check around for discounts and rebates for you. Every so often, such as weekly or monthly, the rebate apps will mail you a check from the retroactively applied discounts you’ve been able to accumulate.

Another way to earn money without having to set aside planning time is through apps that round up your purchases to the next whole dollar amount and the spare change is saved for use elsewhere. For example, Acorns is a very inexpensive app (just $1 per month for most users) that uses your extra cents to invest in a diverse set of brands. Although you can make adjustments to these investments at any point, the Nobel Prize-winning economist who developed the app has saved you time by doing the research on these investments for you. Another option is Bank of America’s mobile app, which allows you to opt into their “Keep the Change” program. This one also rounds each purchase up to the next dollar and deposits that amount into your savings account. These incremental amounts of change won’t make a significant difference in your checking account on a day-to-day basis, but they will allow you to earn interest on spare change over time.

18th annual whistlestop All Aboard! FiftyForward Madison Station held its 18th annual Whistlestop Dinner and Fundraiser in March. The event raised more than $30,000 to help fund the many programs, services, and activities offered at the center. Guests enjoyed an extensive silent auction and reception, followed by a fabulous meal catered by dinner sponsor CRAVE Catering.

NewsChannel5 weatherman and Talk of the Town co-host Lelan Statom once again was at the helm as Whistlestop guest emcee.

Emceed by Lelan Statom of NewsChannel 5, some highlights of the evening were the announcement of Delmar Dorr as the Senior of the Year, and Ron Smith, president of the Madison-Rivergate Area Chamber of Commerce as the Conductor of the Year. The other candidate in the running for Conductor this year was Ben Middleton, representing the Kiwanis Club of Madison. Together these candidates raised more than $1,700 for the center.

The entertainment for the evening was performed by “Easy,” a smooth jazz quartet that included one of the Madison Station members on drums.

The evening also included a fun feature performance from the “Loose Caboose Players,” the Reader’s Theater group that meets at the center. They kept the audience laughing with their skits and songs.

It’s Just Stuff! by Connie Sue Davenport

Connie Sue helps people make sense of their stuff

A Google search called “What to do with grandma’s stuff” will inevitably net dozens of results. As our elders – grandparents, parents, and other loved ones – pass on, we are often left with households of their “beloved stuff.” Some of us divide up the items, taking care that each member of the family receives something that holds special memories for them, and sometimes we are overwhelmed and call in a specialist to assess the items and plan an estate sale.

When family members are left with entire estates belonging to their parents and grandparents and don’t know where to turn, they often call on Connie Sue Davenport to help them sort it out, put a value on items and help them sell it. For more than three decades, she has been sharing her appraisal expertise and she is an accredited member of the International Society of Appraisers and past president of the Tennessee chapter.

In the past several years, Connie Sue has seen extensive growth in what she refers to as a burgeoning service industry with many different titles – all focused on assisting clients in decluttering and downsizing household items. Titles like “professional move managers, aging life care professionals, certified appraisers, etc.,” have created a growing industry to help people get rid of stuff.

What people might not realize about Connie Sue is that she is part therapist and part sleuth. Many people grow up hearing the family stories about certain items, imbuing them with an almost mythical value. It’s these items that Connie Sue uses her sleuthing abilities to syphon through family lore to get to the real issue: does this item, in fact, have real (monetary) value or just sentimental value to the family? She explains that many of these treasured household items and furniture were handmade – think of all that dark brown furniture – and were symbols of an acquired success for many families. Other items were brought home by military veterans after the WWII from the Orient. Many families might feel paralyzed by what to do with these items when they are inherited, but Connie Sue has advice for those seeking to downsize, declutter and sell these items.

Reuse, repurpose, reimagine For many millennials and Gen Xers, some of these items and furniture can be repurposed and

reimagined. Although it may seem sacrilegious to repaint antique dark furniture, many family pieces can live on being used in a different way. A buffet table could be painted and used as a TV stand; an older wingback chair can get reupholstered in a modern pattern.

Some items live on as classic pieces due to a renewed interest in cleanlined midcentury furniture or as pop culture collections.

Speaking of collections, Connie Sue has some very useful advice for those who get “stuck” with collections. Have the collection appraised and keep the wonderful two or three valuable pieces with the rest.

Often at auctions, people will purchase whole collections just to get the few valuable pieces worth saving. As Connie Sue says, “the valuable pieces help sell the sludge, but don’t sell the cream (alone).”

In the end, if you’ve inherited an estate full of stuff, it is best to ask yourself a few questions that will help you decide what to do. First, how much time do you have to deal with it? If time is of no consequence, take the time to have valuable items evaluated and appraised; maybe even sell them at auction or consignment. If you have to get rid of items quickly because of a house sale, an estate sale may be the best way to go. The estate planner can help you sort out the good things, group the collections, price the items and sell them. Of course, the company conducting the sale will take a percentage of the proceeds. Do your homework and read the fine print.

Distill, distill, distill Lastly, Connie Sue advises folks to constantly assess their stuff. She recommends keeping a donation bag handy for those items that have outgrown their usefulness. Part of the journey of decluttering your belongings is to “distill” down to the items that you love and that you find useful. If you want to sell some of your household items or collectibles, you can research their current market value by searching similar items on eBay or on liveauctineers.com and search for “sold” items.

Lastly, Connie Sue says, “Take the time to go through your things, because if you don’t, in the end, someone else will.”
