As many of you know, the governor extended his order to close senior centers in Tennessee through at least August 29, 2020. Our centers will be closed to programming through that date. At all times, and especially in this time of COVID-19, the safety and well-being of older adults and the entire community are our number-one priority. Our center closures and COVID-19 have fundamentally changed the way our members, volunteers and clients experience FiftyForward and they have certainly changed the way we work. It is so important to develop creative ways to decrease the experience of social isolation and loneliness which are real dangers especially to older adults.

We have developed innovative virtual programming to help stay connected online, are continuing our fun “Beep-and-Greet” drive-thru events, and have made thousands of calls to remain in close contact with those who really need a caring, familiar voice. We just launched our “front yard” visits to offer face-toface visits at a distance.

General information and FiftyForward administration

The expansion of our essential services including food, meals, and care management has been critical. Through expanded outreach, we help people like Anne, an 83-year-old widow who lives alone and just returned from rehab after an illness. When we met Anne, she had no food in her home and no one to help her. We delivered food the day she contacted us and are still helping her and many older adults in similar circumstances. Your ongoing support helps us ensure no senior lacks food or essential resources when they need it. If you or another older adult need assistance, please call our FiftyForward Resource Line, 615-743-3416, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. While our FiftyForward locations are closed, we are still hard at work. We hope this edition of Forward Focus with its focus on technology helps bridge the gap of communication. We need and appreciate your assistance to help us maintain and expand our work during this pandemic closure. This will ensure we can continue to support, champion and enhance life for older adults today and in the future. Our very best to you for safety and good health. The entire FiftyForward Team

Staying connected while social distancing By Elliot Burnette Development & Marketing Assistant

Since mid-March, due to COVID-19, we have been under Stay at Home orders from state and local government. During this time of social distancing, it is more important than ever to reach out and stay connected to friends and loved ones. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, cdc.gov), older adults are at an increased risk of social isolation. This isolation causes other critical health risks including depression and heart disease. Thankfully, with access to the internet via computers and smartphones, this seemingly difficult task of keeping in touch is easier than ever. There are many applications to use on the computer, smartphone, or tablet to talk to loved ones through text, voice, and even video. Here are some of the most popular ways to keep in touch while still maintaining a safe distance.

Skype

This easy-to-use software allows voice and video calling, as well as a textonly instant-message (IM) feature for groups of up to 50 people on any device. Most features are free to use, but those with a paid subscription can access even more of the platform’s capabilities. To get started, follow these steps: 1. Download the software from https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/ (Many PCs running Windows 10 come with Skype pre-installed, so you may be able to skip this step.) 2. Create a free Microsoft account at https://account.microsoft.com/ account/manage-my-account. You will need to use either your email address or your phone number. 3. Once you have both Skype and a login, you can sign in and add your friends who also have a Microsoft account to your contacts using their email or Skype name.

One of the more interesting features of FaceTime is that you can take photos during a video call. Simply press the shutter button on your device while talking to your friends, and then you will be able to see the photos you took in your saved photos. Zoom Zoom is similar to FaceTime and Skype, and it is also great for business meetings or virtual classrooms. The free plan can host up to 100 participants for a duration of 40 minutes, and the paid plans can host longer meetings. To sign up for Zoom, follow these steps: 1. Go to https://zoom.us/signup and follow the prompts on screen to create an account. 2. Once you have an account, you can join a meeting. Usually, the host of the meeting provides a link to click to join. After clicking the link and entering the meeting, you will see several options at the bottom of the window. You can toggle your sound and video on and off, see the participants for the meeting, access the chat, share your screen, and more. You can also click the red “leave” button to exit the meeting at any time. To learn more about Zoom, please visit https://zoom.us/

4. To make a call, select the friend or friends from your contact list you would like to call and follow the steps below: To learn more about Skype, visit https://www.skype.com/en/about/

FaceTime FaceTime is similar to Skype but can only be used with Apple products such as iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches. FaceTime allows chats with a limit of 32 people at a time. With FaceTime you can make voice and video calls to anyone in your contacts list, provided they also have a FaceTime-enabled device. To use FaceTime, follow these steps: 1. Check to see if the FaceTime app is installed on your device. If it is not, you will need to download it from the Apple App Store. 2. Once you have the app, you will need to turn the app on by signing in using your Apple ID. 3. Once you have both your FaceTime information and your friend’s FaceTime information (either their phone number or registered email address), you are ready to make a FaceTime call.

Google Hangouts

Google Hangouts is very similar to all the other options and it works directly from Google Chrome using your existing Google account — no need to create a new account if you already have one. To start using Google Hangouts, follow the steps below: 1. Visit https://hangouts.google.com/ while logged into your Google account. Once there you will see several options, including “video call,” “phone call,” and “message.” 2. The sidebar provides even more options. You can see all your contacts, past text conversations, phone calls, and invites, as well as options to download the app on various platforms. 3. To make a call it’s as easy as selecting who you want to call from your Google Hangout contacts (you add them by typing in their email address), and pressing the “send invite” button to invite them to join your call or text chat. Video calling supports up to 25 participants. To learn more about Google Hangouts, visit https://bit.ly/31UrsGU continued on page 8

Supportive Care Services

FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels and FiftyForward Adult Day Services move “back home” to FiftyForward headquarters FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels, Adult Day Services (ADS) and FiftyForward Knowles Center were three of FiftyForward’s original core programs for older adults. Now, the three programs are reunited under the same roof at the FiftyForward Patricia Hart Building, 174 Rains Avenue, in the Wedgewood Houston area. “For several years, FiftyForward Fresh and ADS leased space at Second Presbyterian Church in Green Hills,” said FiftyForward Chief Program Officer Gretchen Funk. “We are grateful for the wonderful partnership we enjoyed with Second Presbyterian, but nothing compares to being back home at our FiftyForward headquarters.” This change makes it possible for these three programs to work together in new and exciting ways to further FiftyForward’s mission to support, champion and enhance life for those 50 and older. The work of FiftyForward Fresh has continued and expanded during this time of COVID-19. Access to meals and food are essential and more of a challenge during this time. In response to this need, FiftyForward expanded its efforts to provide hot and frozen meals, emergency food boxes and shelf-stable groceries to all of the agency’s regular home-delivered meals recipients and to older adults in need of food in Davidson County who reached out for help. “We continue to deliver hundreds of meals to the community each week,” added Funk. “If you, or someone you know, needs food or meals, please call our FiftyForward Resource Line at 615-743-3416.” Having these three programs under the same roof will offer the chance for FiftyForward to engage center members and ADS participants in innovative and exciting programming while also supporting caregivers. “We look forward to the time when ADS participants and FiftyForward Knowles members can be together in this shared space along with FiftyForward Fresh,” said Funk. “Our vision is for the FiftyForward Patricia Hart Building to serve as a place where we can all be energized, inspired, and supported throughout our respective life journeys.”

FiftyForward Victory Over Crime

Internet Safety By Ashley Hunter, Director FiftyForward Victory Over Crime The COVID-19 pandemic has forced most of us to engage with others online instead of in person. The internet can be a wonderful way to connect with others and express creativity. While there are many benefits to “living online” it is important to follow recommended safety precautions to keep you and your personal information safe. Scammers are always thinking of new ways to take your money or personal information. Follow these five tips to stay safe while on the internet. 1. Create strong passwords Strong passwords are key to keeping your accounts safe from hackers. When creating passwords use sequences of numbers and letters that cannot be easily guessed. Use a mixture of lowercase and capital letters as well as special characters. Never share your password with anyone unless you have given someone, like a trusted family member or friend, permission to manage your account for you. 2. Be careful what you share Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram have made it easier than ever to share everything about yourself, but be careful not to overshare. Scammers and criminals can use what you post to take advantage of you. On most social media platforms, the default sengs make what you post public to anyone and everyone. Look at the privacy sengs on each platform and adjust them to what makes you feel most comfortable. Facebook, for

example, has a wide range of security sengs that allow you to adjust exactly which friends can see specific information. 3. Install an-virus and an-spyware software Download and purchase reputable anti-virus and anti-spyware software, and keep it updated! Most anti-virus software requires updating to keep it most effective. Research what anti-virus protection software best suits your needs. Companies like McAfee and Norton are two examples that offer great anti-virus software products. 4. Think twice before you click Never click on unknown links in pop-up ads online or emails. Scammers can gain access to your computer and personal information through suspicious links. Sometimes scammers can even disguise themselves online as someone you might know. If you’re not sure if the email is legitimate, ask a family member or trusted friend who is computer savvy. If the link or email seems a little fishy, do yourself a favor, delete it. 5. Look for the “s” when shopping or banking online Anytime that you are purchasing, or banking online make sure that the website is legitimate and secure. You can do this by looking for the “s” after “http” in the web address at the top of your browser (https://). If you don’t see the “s” — don’t share your financial information! The “s” stands for secure and shows that your information is encrypted. Remember, never provide any financial information online when accessing public Wi-Fi. These open Wi-Fi networks are not secure and can lead to criminals stealing your information.

FiftyForward Friends Learning In Pairs (FLIP)

Sandra Thomas, longtime community advocate, retires after nearly 19 years with FiftyForward Friends Learning in Pairs program By Susan Sizemore, Director FiftyForward Communications

A

t the end of June, we wished a fond farewell and a wonderful retirement to Sandra Thomas who has dedicated her life to helping others. She spent nearly 19 years at FiftyForward directing the Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) program.

Thomas says these positions taught her a great deal about older adults and the need for advocacy. She said, “I learned seniors who are alone with no one to look after them must have someone to advocate for them, especially when they are being neglected and/or abused.” She also worked at Alive Hospice as director of Volunteer Services for ten years to coordinate volunteer services for terminally ill patients in their homes and at the residence. She said, in this position, “I learned that the dying teach you how to live.”

FLIP pairs older adults with children who need special help with math or reading. The tutoring program benefits the child and the older adult volunteer. Thomas said, “Words can’t describe the feeling volunteers have when they see a child’s reading or math skills improve.” There is something magical about intergenerational impact of the FLIP program. She explained the important role seniors play in providing friendship and being a role model for kids who might not have role models in their lives. She stressed the benefits of intergenerational sharing. “Seniors are living history and that’s what makes it fun for them,” said Thomas. “They can put a real face on what has happened.” She recalled when Tennessee Governor Winfield Dunn and Mrs. Dunn were volunteers and a “During my 40-year career story referenced the olden days with a managing nearly 1,200 horse and buggy at a farm. When Gov. volunteers, I have come to Dunn said, “I did that,” it put the story realize that volunteers are in perspective. Thomas said the boy was the heart and soul of this fascinated with reading from that point nation and must be valued forward. as such. Without them, She recounts that the “I lived it and I was nonprofits could not do there” scenario played out repeatedly in their work.” her time with FLIP. Sometimes she would serve as a substitute for a tutor every Sandra Thomas, Director, now and then. She said, “I loved my job, Friends Learning In Pairs especially being with the children.” One time a child brought out a book about Wilma Rudolph, the track star. Thomas shared with the child, “Wilma Rudolph lived in my neighborhood and was my oldest sister’s best friend. She borrowed her clothes…” That made all the difference to that little girl,” Thomas said. “These touchpoints make books and reading real.” She added, “I learned that mixing seniors with children is like making a good stew that nourishes the body and soul. They provide a lasting memory in each other’s lives.” For most of her career, Thomas has served in the role of advocate and volunteer. She was a member of the Social Action Group on Aging (SAGA) for ten years. As a VISTA worker for two years, she was promoted to program director managing two programs: the Nursing Home Visitor/ Advocates (to train volunteers to visit and advocate for nursing home residents); and the SAGA Care Line (to instruct those with loved ones in nursing homes to process complaints.) In addition, Thomas served as co-chair of the Tennessee Coalition for Nursing Home Reform where she helped pass Tennessee’s nursing home reform bill. 6 | Forward Focus

Thomas says that being a VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) worker was one of the greatest experiences of her life. She said, “It provided me an opportunity to work with community members to meet their most pressing challenges and to help them find and implement solutions.” (L-R) Sandra Thomas pictured with Ceci Sachs one of the many FLIP volunteers who tutor our community’s children.

“FiftyForward and the Nashville community have been fortunate to benefit from Sandra’s commitment to the community and in particular to older adults,” said FiftyForward Director of Volunteer Engagement Robin Johnson. “It is noteworthy also that Sandra began her career as a VISTA volunteer (part of AmeriCorps) and finished her career as the successful director of a National Service/CNCS family, Senior Corps funded program.” Thomas summarized her career impact by saying, “During my 40-year career managing nearly 1,200 volunteers, I have come to realize that volunteers are the heart and soul of this nation and must be valued as such.” She added, “Without them, nonprofits could not do their work.” “My greatest accomplishment in life are my two children,” she said. “I tried to teach them that whatever you choose to do in life make sure that it is something that benefits mankind. They have done that by volunteering to help others.” When we asked what the future holds for her, she said, “I look forward to one day spending more time with my grandchildren and my first great grandchild; catching up on reading; watching documentaries; and quilting. I have always tried to learn something new every day and because of my love for learning, I have set as my next goal to learn how to play chess. And when I feel it’s safe again to be in large crowds, I will enjoy going to jazz concerts and visiting museums. “After two years of enjoying retirement,” Thomas added, “I will certainly volunteer in the community.” This is the kind of intergenerational sharing and modeling the world needs today. Thanks for the inspiration, Sandra. Enjoy your sweet and welldeserved retirement. We look forward to seeing what kind of nourishing stew you cook up in the future.

WhatsApp WhatsApp is one of the most popular chat apps in the world, especially outside the United States. It can be used to text chat, as well as make phone calls. WhatsApp uses your internet connection, rather than a phone line, so all calls and texts are free with a Wi-Fi connection. To sign up, simply install the app on your device (WhatsApp also works on computers and tablets) and enter your phone number to make an account. (Be sure to include your country code if dialing outside the United States.) From there you can add a picture and a short bio so that your friends will know who is contacting them. You can even import your existing phone contacts who also have WhatsApp accounts.

Technology 101

TIPS for putting your best face forward via smart technology As many of us embrace the use of technology to stay connected via FaceTime, Skype, Zoom and other teleconference methods, it is important to put our best face forward. Follow these easy tips to make the most of your face-to-face interactions via smart technology: 1. Pick a quiet time to schedule your teleconference so background noises do not interfere. Think of this time like inviting someone into your home. 2. Assess the background in advance to ensure the background so the person can focus on you and not anything irrelevant behind you. 3. Use a tripod when possible to avoid movement in your video and especially when doing FaceTime videos. You can also steady the camera by propping it with an easel, or laptop screen.

To start chang, it’s as easy as tapping the chat bubble at the bottom of the screen. You can even send pictures and GIFs through the app. You can start a group chat by tapping “new group” and then adding selected contacts to your new group. To make a voice or video call using WhatsApp, simply tap the phone icon in the chat window of the contact you’d like to call. To learn more, please visit https://www.whatsapp.com/ Google Duo Google Duo is incredibly similar to Skype, FaceTime, and WhatsApp, with almost all of the same features. To begin, install the app and log in using your existing Google account information. Video calls can be made by adding your contacts, selecting the person you’d like to call, and then tapping the “video call” button in the bottom middle of the screen. Google Duo also has a “knock knock” feature that will enable you to see your contact’s video as they’re calling you. A low-light feature helps to light you or your contact up brighter when visibility is low. This app has a added benefit of working across various device platforms. A comprehensive guide to Google Duo can be found here: https://www. pocket-lint.com/apps/news/google/138528-google-duo-video-call-app-howdoes-it-work-and-does-it-offer-voice-calls Even though we are working through the phases of reopening, many older adults are choosing to stay inside because of concerns over the continued presence of the virus. Through the use of these exciting technologies, we can still stay in touch while staying safe.

4. Do try to have decent lighting that highlights your face to avoid dark silhouettes. Dark environments often lead to low-quality video. 5. When you want to shoot video, set up horizontally (think like you are shooting for a television screen). Pung the camera at eye level or above often offers a much more flattering angle rather than looking at someone’s neck or elsewhere. Using these tips will enhance your on-screen presence and give your virtual visitor a better view of you.

Staying connected

The intersection of health and technology During this COVID-19 global pandemic the need for services to be rendered using technology has never been greater. Many of us may have already set up email accounts with our healthcare providers in order to occasionally contact Photo courtesy of Amwell.com our primary care physicians for advice or a prescription renewal. Now this technology is as vital as ever since many of us are staying close to home or in many cases we are sheltering in place until it is deemed safe to go about our regular activities. Why use telehealth? Telehealth is a great way to use technology – your phone, tablet, or computer – to access health care. For patients who might have mobility or limited transportation options, telehealth is a viable and accessible option. It also makes health care accessible for those who might live in rural or isolated communities. Telehealth makes it possible to have access to medical specialists including your own personal physician and can often improve communication between the patient and the health care team. Telehealth Is also beneficial for one’s own health management. If using telehealth, it is important to be prepared for your virtual “visit.” This way you can ensure geng all your questions answered and to use your time, as well your doctor’s time, wisely and efficiently. Be sure to prepare ahead of me by doing the following: 1. Start by checking with your health care group to see if it has a telehealth portal. For example, Vanderbilt Medical Group has a portal called MyHealthAtVanderbilt.com. Call your health provider or search for it online. You can then set up a personal account using your email account.

It’s not like home,

it is home.

2. Decide how you want to consult with your doctor. For simple prescription refill permissions, a simple email through the portal will most likely suffice. Your doctor can simply contact the prescription provider and grant permission for refills. For a virtual visit, you will need to make an appointment for a visit as you normally do. 3. Prepare your medical questions ahead of time and write them down, if necessary. Take notes as you consult with your physician. This ensures nothing is forgotten. Telehealth visits may seem nerve-wracking initially to set up but relax in knowing that as difficult and overwhelming as the telehealth visit may be for you, it is most likely a new experience for your doctor, too. Everyone is learning new technology to be able to deliver good healthcare under new conditions and circumstances. It is likely that telemedicine will be a technology we will all learn to use more readily in the future.

Virtual programming and socially distanced events keep our community connected When COVID-19 hit our community, we seized the opportunity to reach out in different ways. FiftyForward centers are now offering virtual programming to keep in contact with members while we are all committed to staying socially distant and safe. Many members are finding this to be a valuable resource although they do say they are looking forward to getting back together. Being at our centers brings them joy, counters depression, and isolation. We are continuing to develop and expand our virtual programming content. For the near future, programming will look different and what that picture will be is still taking shape. We do know virtual programming will forever be a part of what FiftyForward has to offer as we find new ways to stay connected. Our virtual programming is available on all our Facebook pages which can accessed from the landing page of our website (www.FiftyForward.org). Below are comments from our center members and teammates regarding the launch of our virtual programming.

Real me connecons

“For older adults who cannot travel or attend family events, the real world can become very small and stifling, but individuals are able to escape their isolation to a degree through our virtual programming. Members have told me, personally, they feel as if they are at the center, when they join our virtual programs such as a meditation class, art class, exercise class, bird watching series, music concert or just watching familiar faces. This programming has really been a lifesaver for our members. They want more!” – Melvin Fowler, center director, FiftyForward Bordeaux. “I believe this has given us a sense of connection especially with the live videos. Our members are able to comment and participate in real time which makes them feel like they are doing the class with us.” —Lisa Maddox, center director, FiftyForward Donelson Station “Virtual programming has allowed members the opportunity to engage with new and familiar FiftyForward staff and instructors. We hope that it gives them something to look forward to each day and helps them still feel connected in a current environment that requires isolation. From a staff perspective, it has been really fun to share our passions with our members and with each other. We are so fortunate at FiftyForward to have staff who are skilled in a variety of areas and who are able to lead virtual programming during this time!” —Heather McNeese, assistant center director, FiftyForward Madison Station Virtual programming as inspiraon Not only have we maintained a focus on the creative arts but some members have been motivated to move beyond just the creative to reach out using technology to connect with loved ones. Classes have included art, baking, jewelry making, and quilting. “I didn’t want to miss Art with Kim Lane, so I finally got Facebook so I can enjoy her art. It is so nice and after the video is all done you can go back and look at it and make another picture. I also enjoyed the dance chair yoga. I loved it so much that I shared it to my brand-new Facebook page. I have a Facebook profile now and I get to celebrate birthdays with my family, and I get beautiful pictures from all over the world. It was especially helpful when my family got sick, and I was able to use Facebook to ask for prayers. It helped me to reach out to others and ask for help so that I did not have to go through my daughter, Elise, and her family’s sickness by myself. I was also able to use Facebook for other things like attending my church, and that really means a lot to me. If FiftyForward hadn’t started using Facebook, I wouldn’t have needed to create a profile. but since they did, I was motivated to make my own profile page and was really blessed by it in so many ways.” —Judy VanDeweghe, FiftyForward J. L. Turner member

Cooking up something special Some of our most popular virtual programming has focused on cooking and baking. Staff members have introduced members to new and easy to prepare foods and yummy baked treats. The effort has not gone unnoticed. “I love trying all your recipes so far. I’m going to try this one too. Thanks for SHARING; you (Heather McNeese) do it so well.” —Sarah Pitcock, FiftyForward Madison Station Movaon and meditaon FiftyForward offers fitness classes at all levels and this is true even in the virtual programming. Health and wellbeing is paramount in what we provide for older adults. The effort pays off. “Thank you, Lisa, for doing this (Tabata classes). Makes me still feel connected.” – Sarah Ayer, FiftyForward Donelson Station “I am moving with your every move” and “Thank you from my body – low impact.” to Janice teaching low impact aerobics class. – Carolyn Hall, FiftyForward Bordeaux “Jan, I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to have your (yoga class) ‘beamed’ into my home. What a luxury!” – Ellen Daly, FiftyForward Donelson Station Socially-distanced events: Beep-and-Greet center events Recently we introduced the Beep-andGreet concept as a way to see members face-to-face in a socially-distanced way. It was a “party in the parking lot” concept where members drove by and staff got to chat with them from a safe distance and give tokens of appreciation. It was a hit! Be sure to check out our ever expanding virtual programming and join us! This programming can be of benefit to anyone, anywhere. Pass the word about this fabulous way to connect and learn with and from one another.

The program was founded by Sarah Martin McConnell whose mother Marge had recently relocated to Nashville because of Hurricane Katrina. She was a participant at FiftyForward Adult Day Services (ADS). After several months of regular visits leading sing-alongs with Marge and her friends at ADS, Music for Seniors (with the help of former FiftyForward Executive Director Janet Jernigan), received funding to launch the program. Music for Seniors is a community-wide effort that connects Nashville’s musicians with its older adults for engaging live music. Today Music for Seniors operates independently as a 501(c)3 arts organization. It provides outreach, a public FREE daytime concert series, and learning labs offering instruction in ukulele and harmonica. It now enlists over 200 musician partners who share live music with senior groups at 120 locations in and around Nashville and in East Tennessee via its first chapter location in Knoxville. In response to COVID-19 “Safer at Home” restrictions, Music for Seniors is now sending out a new “virtual” outreach program every Monday via email. •

Vong in Tennessee The State, Federal and County Primary Elections are around the corner with voting on August 6. Check your respective county for voting times and locations. Below are some timely tips to help you prepare for voting during the pandemic. •

Absentee ballot applications (for those 60 and older or with special conditions) are available at nashville.gov/vote. The deadline to request a mail-in ballot is July 30.

•

Before going to the polls, check/update information at www. GoVoteTN.com (including assessing the sample ballot). This step may save you time in the voting process.

•

If you plan to vote in person, polling locations plan to limit the number of individuals allowed at one time.

•

Consider voting early to avoid crowds. In the past, mid-morning and mid-afternoon time periods often have lighter attendance.

•

Use hand sanitizer when entering and exiting the polling location and your personal pen to sign documents, if preferred.

DON’T FORGET! It’s not too late! You should have received the 2020 Census in your mailboxes. Be sure to fill it out (online, by phone, or mail) so everyone gets counted! Your responses help determine what services (health and human services, education, and representation) get funded in your community. For information, visit www.census.gov.
