In the new year we will continue to offer programs at the center level (when and how we can, and of course, following CDC safety guidelines). “There is no health without mental health.”

That poignant statement was offered by Tom Starling, CEO of Mental Health America of the MidSouth, as he began an interview with us for our video series FiftyForward Exchange (https://fiftyforward.org/videos/).

What a perfect reminder for all of us to keep top of mind as we work to find and share the innovative ways to stay safe and sane during the challenges ahead.

Starling is no stranger to helping folks navigate life’s ups and downs as he has served as CEO of Middle Tennessee Alzheimer’s Association, CEO of the United Way of Rutherford County as well as an administrator at a university, a hospital chaplain, and at a senior residential center.

He and his team at Mental Health America of the MidSouth help individuals with anything from diagnosis to referrals as they offer guidance for maintaining good mental health. Starling shared that Mental Health America offers a continuum of care ranging from preventing mental health issues to early diagnosis, intervention, and treatment.

With the advent of COVID-19, Starling was quick to share that chronic loneliness — especially for rural and older adults and even school children — is too common. He shared that the stress we are all facing today may lead to depression and negatively impact our mental health. The solution? We need to find ways to counter toxic stress.

He said the screenings vary and that Mental Health America offers 10, free, evidence-based screenings that can be taken anonymously. After taking a screening, the screener will be directed to a variety of resources: do-it-yourself exercises and protocols for improving mental health, local providers, tips on how to share results with a trusted friend, etc. Starling said, “We strongly urge individuals to share the screenings with other family members and friends during this difficult time.”

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an educational series designed to provide tools you need to take care of yourself. If you take good care of yourself, you will be better prepared to take good care of your loved one. As a participant you will learn how to: reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate your feelings, balance your life, increase ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources.

#COVIDCooking: A time to experiment!

By Misa Acox, Editor, Forward Focus Marketing and Publications Manager During this pandemic, the hashtag #COVIDCooking seemed to trend on social media, illuminating a renewed interest in cooking and baking while people were selfisolating at home. As FiftyForward moved its programming to a virtual format, three of our program directors shared their cooking and baking interests and talents with us through our virtual programming. Heather McNeese, lead program director at FiftyForward Madison Station, began sharing well-loved recipes with members on Facebook.

Georgina Dench, who coordinates our FiftyForward Fresh meal delivery serving as program manager at FiftyForward Patricia Hart Building, shared some recipes with the help of her Victoria “Vickee” family. And, lastly, Schoffner is a certified Victoria “Vickee” nutrition health coach Schoffner, our kitchen and the FiftyForward wizard who plans meals coordinator. and plates those delicious meals in our FiftyForward Fresh kitchen, shared some of her easy and healthy vegan recipes, too. All three women bring a vitality to this “cooking at home” phenomenon we find ourselves in during this time.

We asked all three teammates a series of questions to learn why there is a resurgence in cooking and baking.

1. What do you think inspired people to take on cooking/ baking during the pandemic?

Georgina Dench is often joined by her father Julian for the baking programs, keeping it all in the family.

Georgina shares, “This time has thrown us all for a huge

loop and has shaken up the way we do so many things. I think people felt inspired to shake things up in the kitchen as well and get out of the food rut so many of us find ourselves in during the monotony of daily life. Cooking and baking are also a comfort for many of us that is so needed right now. For me personally, food is all about connection and being with my loved ones. I enjoy spending hours over a recipe and sharing it with my family.”

Vickee adds: “Their favorite restaurant was shut down and they realized cooking at home was much safer and … a lot cheaper.”

It’s true many restaurants have shut down and there is a movement to order take out from local neighborhood restaurants to help them stay open. Ordering takeout has been proven to be low-risk in terms of contracting COVID-19.

2. What inspires you to cook/bake?

Heather shares, “I love to eat (who doesn’t?) and I love to try new recipes.” She has been making the effort to try one new recipe a week to break up the usual rotation of meals she and her husband consistently cook. Vickee says for her it’s about saving money. She says, “I do a ton of batch cooking and meal preparation because I’m super busy.” In addition to her duties at FiftyForward Fresh, Vickee is a fitness coach, managing her own business and clients. She shares, “I really like to educate others on how simple ingredients can actually taste the best and be healthier.”

Georgina loves baking because “it is a way I can tune into my inner perfectionist! I personally love the exactness and the science of baking. I also have a big sweet tooth, so I don’t like to go too long without whipping up a sweet treat!”

3. If you could share words of wisdom with folks about new recipes, what would you say?

Georgina says, “Start simple! Practice mastering a few basic recipes and venture out from there.”

Heather concurs, “Do it! Start with simple recipes that only require a few ingredients and steps and then work your way up to dishes that might require a little more effort. The whole process should be enjoyable … As with everything in life, it’s a learning process.” Vickee agrees that now is the best time to try. She says, “If there is a recipe or a specific ingredient that you have been wanting to try, just go for it. If it doesn’t work the first time, do it again. Trying new things and learning to cook is all about experimentation.”

4. Since you are teaching cooking/baking in a virtual format, have you gotten feedback that warms your heart?

experience new dishes they may not have had before. Heather appreciate the comments that members leave on Facebook – “Thank you for sharing” or “I made this recipe and it turned out great” – she is happy they are engaging and enjoying the video tutorials. Georgina’s family members have become familiar faces in her virtual tutorials. Her interactions with her family, especially her dad, have been a joy to watch.

He likes to join her in the baking lessons. She shares, “I love hearing from people that we look like we’re having fun together. That’s what it’s all about!”

5. What do you think people will “take away” from this time of physically distancing?

It is Vickee’s hope that we “won’t take each other for granted and that home cooked meals can taste so much better.” Georgina says, “Slowing down is good for the soul. There are a lot of simple pleasures to experience at home – sitting outside with a cup of coffee, reading, doing a puzzle, learning a new craft, and of course, baking!” Heather put it this way: “I hope people realize the importance of slowing down and prioritizing what is truly meaningful in life. At the end of the pandemic, I hope we all come out of it with cleaner houses, new skills (and recipes!) we’ve learned, and a greater appreciation for the family, friends, and strangers we get to interact with every day.”

FiftyForward Senior Corps programs welcome national rebranding as AmeriCorps Seniors FiftyForward’s federally funded volunteer programs have a new look and name! The agency that funds and oversees RSVP and Foster Grandparents has rebranded.

We have AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers serving as: • FIftyForward Foster Grandparents • FiftyForward Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) tutors • FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels delivery volunteers FiftyForward is proud to be an AmeriCorps Seniors grantee, allowing us to provide high quality volunteer programs that engage older adults in service. Digital literacy offers new opportunities to learn and grow

By Susan Sizemore, Director FiftyForward Communications When Elise Young signed up for computer classes through the Council on Aging, she had no idea what was in store for her. Through those classes she gained the skills and the confidence to apply for a job at FiftyForward. Now she is a model for our agency and for older adults to demonstrate that learning and using technology is possible at any age.

Danny Oliver, digital literacy educator at the Nashville Public Library (NPL), shared a bit about the library’s history with FiftyForward. He said the first series of one-hour classes he taught was at FiftyForward Knowles and the classes lasted for 8 weeks.

“Initially we took our Android tablet lab each week so participants would get comfortable using the same device,” said Oliver. “We chose these topics because we wanted them to first learn how to use and navigate the device, and then the internet.”

He explained the next step was learning how to be safe on the internet. Getting started with apps showed them how to use common applications plus how to download an app from the Google Play Store.

Oliver shared, “Of course, being the library, we wanted to promote the library resources. This gave them the opportunity to navigate the tablet at a safe website while learning about library

“While the above is a theme of what we teach,” Oliver explained, “we do change it up to fit locations, needs and times. Sometimes I use iPads or Kindle Fire tablets trying to use the types of personal devices the patrons may have. But the basics of how to use a device, the internet, and internet safety are always included.”

Oliver recalled with fondness walking some of our older adults at FiftyForward Knowles through the steps of getting familiar with Google as a search engine. He challenged our members in his class to “Google” themselves. He shared, “That’s how Ossie Jefferson-Corley learned that her picture was in the Library of Congress.” It was such a memorable moment for him, the other instructors, and class participants he recalled. Ossie’s picture was indeed included in the Library of Congress archives and she was pictured with her friend Rosa Parks.

NPL began digital literacy training in 2015-2016, when they were tapped to work with community partners who were trying to get computers, internet, and digital literacy training to families of school-aged children who were not able to afford them.

It was during this time, NPL’s Digital Inclusion Initiatives Manager Marian Christmon shared that they also learned many seniors were not online and were not able to participate in the new 21st century digital world. Christmon said, “The first thing we have to do is to get seniors over the fear (of technology) … then they can do so much.”

Christmon explained that NPL held its first program for seniors in 2016. At the time she said they discovered these older adults were very excited and eager to learn more about technology. “We didn’t know of any other programs that were providing this service for seniors, so we decided to take it on and now the program has grown over the years,” Christmon added. “We currently partner with 30+ agencies and regularly provide digital literacy programming for seniors across Davidson County. We help them acquire basic digital literacy skills and learn how to use these new skills to improve their lives.”

She added, “They now understand the relevance of technology in their lives and the knowledge they gain from our program gives them the confidence to use technology,” said Christmon. Technology offers access to critical resources as well as a way continued on page 9 7

A participant of the Cyber Seniors graduating class offered by NPL, shared a unique perspective on the program and the help they received. “It’s just so wonderful that we have teachers who were willing to teach us and be patient with us … as a senior citizen sometimes people don’t want to be bothered with us because we are kind of slow or our learning abilities are slower,” said FiftyForward Bordeaux member Mildred Vaughn.

She enthusiastically added, “And the young people we had helping … they were right there with us. They did not just help the people they were supposed to be helping, they helped all of us.”

The teen mentors, students who were arranged to help with this program, offered similar sentiments saying they felt closer to the older adults they were helping. They said they gained so much wisdom, fell in love with all of the seniors with whom they were working, and championed their success by saying, “Don’t be scared to ask for help.” One teen mentor even said, “You are all my family now … I have adopted you.”

Vaccinations may hold key to wellness all year long

By Misa Acox Editor, Forward Focus As fall and soon winter descend on us in Middle Tennessee, people will start spending less time outdoors and congregate indoors to escape the cold. It is during this time we must stay diligent in following the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC.gov) guidelines regarding COVID-19 as well as staying mindful of a host of other illnesses such as the flu and pneumonia.

Fortunately, there are several options for vaccinations for flu, pneumonia and shingles to stay healthy and to build the body’s immunity. We are thankful to know several vaccines for COVID-19 are being developed and tested for release soon.

Flu vaccine The flu is a potentially serious illness that affects millions of individuals each year and can lead to hospitalization or even death. Flu vaccines help the body develop antibodies by offering protection against those strains of flu identified as being common each year.

The flu vaccine is important for all ages, but especially for older adults and this year more than ever, it is crucial in reducing the strain on healthcare systems already overwhelmed with the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are several types of flu vaccines depending on the age of the recipient or their health status. Flu vaccines are generally administered via a needle in the arm although there is an intranasal option (FluMist). There is even a vaccine developed for older adults that administers a higher dose to build a stronger immune response. The CDC recommends people get vaccinated in the fall because it takes two weeks to develop antibodies and it is best to get vaccinated before the flu season begins. If you have not gotten the flu vaccine, make an appointment with your healthcare provider or check out the many community clinics offering the flu vaccine at little or no cost.

Pneumonia vaccine Pneumonia, an infection of the lungs, affects millions of people each year.

According to the CDC, “viruses, bacteria, and fungi can all cause pneumonia.

In the United States, common causes of viral pneumonia are influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19).”

There are currently two different vaccines to provide protection against pneumonia. The CDC recommends all adults 65 years or older receive the Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). For those adults 65 years or older who may have conditions that weaken the immune system, the CDC recommends Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13). As with any vaccine, it is best to speak with your healthcare provider to determine which vaccine is best for you.

Shingles vaccine In addition to flu and pneumonia vaccines, you may have heard about the Shingles vaccine. Shingles is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. For years after having chicken pox, the virus remains dormant (inactive) in an individual but can reactivate later, causing shingles. According to the CDC, “most people who develop shingles have only one episode during their lifetime; however, you can have shingles more than once.” It is important to get the vaccine especially if you had chicken pox as a child. Shingles will present as a painful rash that may show up on one side of the body or face. Like chicken pox, the rash consists of blisters that will scab over and eventually clear up after 2-4 weeks, but they are painful and itchy.

Currently, the shingles vaccine being used is Shingrix which is a two-part vaccine replacing Zostavax which has been used since 2006. You will need two doses of Shingrix. Plan to get the second dose 2-6 months after the first dose.

As with all vaccines, call your healthcare provider if you have questions and to make your appointment.

Staying healthy for yourself and your loved ones is crucial all year long.

COVID-19 cases continue to spike in parts of the country which puts tremendous strain on our healthcare system. Please do your part to protect yourself and your loved ones by following best health practices – wash hands frequently, wipe down high-touch surfaces with disinfecting wipes, practice physical distancing, and wear face masks.

Race for a COVID-19 vaccine

As communities across the U.S. are dealing with the increase in COVID-19 cases, the race is on to create and test an effective COVID-19 vaccine. There are currently 23 companies with COVID-19 clinical vaccine trials including Pfizer and Moderna. Both Pfizer and Moderna have had much success in clinical trials (currently more than 90% and 95% effectiveness respectively) as well as a very diverse pool of people participating. According to an NPR report, Moderna reported “6,000 enrollees who identified as Hispanic or Latinx and more than 3,000 participants who identified as Black or African American, as well as 7,000 people older than 65, and 5,000 with high-risk chronic diseases.” “The Tennessean” reported, “The Moderna candidate vaccine was developed in partnership with researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center ((VUMC), Emory University, the National Institutes of Health and others. Vanderbilt’s research is funded in part by Tennessee’s own Dolly Parton, who donated $1 million to the Vanderbilt COVID-19 research fund.

FiftyForward’s All of Us Research Program, led by Project Director Kelsey Mahaffey, has the same goal for its research — signing up a diversely rich population of older adults since diverse subjects and older adults are often missing in clinical trials for vaccines and medical research. Two of FiftyForward’s All of Us Peer Ambassadors, who are trained to educate and recruit volunteers for the research program, volunteered locally for the Moderna clinical vaccine trials.

Mary Jo McKelvey, a retired RN, has been involved with All of Us since its inception. McKelvey is passionate about research and understands the necessity of Vernon Prevatt diversity in clinical trials. She was happy to volunteer for the Moderna Phase 3 trial. McKelvey said, “I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this study to help stop the horrible pandemic. Often, I have been turned down for research studies because of my advanced age, but for this trial I was welcomed because of my age group’s vulnerability to the virus. I am elated that this vaccine has progressed to the point that it seems to be effective in holding back the virus and will soon be available for use.”

“It’s important to set realistic expectation including something to look forward to after the cold dark winter and or the isolation caused by the pandemic,” said Starling. “Another way to cope with depression is to put the focus on others by serving them. Volunteer when and where you can.

There is so much benefit you can gain by being the giver of time and talents, especially today.”

World Central Kitchen is impacting the world one community at a time (and feeding seniors in our community through FiftyForward)

When chef José Andrés set his focus on change and problem solving, the world became the beneficiary. Now through his organization World Central Kitchen (WCK) he is impacting thousands of individuals in Middle Tennessee affected

by COVID-19 including older adults served by FiftyForward, thanks to government funding and a partnership with local restaurant Henley.

“We were honored to be contacted by World Central Kitchen to provide food to the older adults in the community we serve,” said Gretchen Funk, chief program officer for FiftyForward. “The seniors who receive these meals are so grateful for the terrific food prepared by Henley and we are grateful for the greater good this initiative has brought to our community.

Founded in 2010 by Andrés, WCK uses the power of food to heal communities and strengthen economies in times of crisis and beyond. Bahamas, Indonesia, Lebanon, Mozambique, Venezuela, and the United States. WCK’s Resilience Programs in the Caribbean and Central America have trained hundreds of chefs and school cooks, advanced clean cooking practices, and awarded grants to farms, fisheries and small food businesses while also providing training and networking opportunities.

WCK has been harvesting food from local farms and restaurants (especially since COVID concerns forced restaurants and bars to shutter) to feed the community lacking resources. Andrés saw opportunity in the midst of the pandemic just like he did after countless other natural disasters. His ability to problem-solve and combine service providers with distribution points has garnered international acclaim. He does not do the work for accolades; his efforts are focused on impacting and improving the community even if that sometimes means working around political barriers. Because he set out to assess and distribute resources years ago, Andres’ past experiences have taught him where there is a will there is a way.

In response to COVID-19, World Central Kitchen has now provided more than 30 million meals in 40 cities across the United States since the start of the pandemic.

In many cities, including Nashville, WCM has found ways to focus on the community 50 and older because they know that demographic has been hit the hardest from the pandemic. Andrés help craft a FiftyForward Martin Center Office bill that feeds people and saves Manager Tonia Pyburn distributes meals restaurants. Here in Nashville, from World Central Kitchen during one we have been able to continue our program thanks to CARES Act of the monthly Beep-and-Greets, our monthly outdoor program where we funding that was distributed by connect with members. the State of Tennessee to assist groups working in relief on the ground.

In an interview with AARP (August/September 2020), Andrés illuminates a bit about his desire to help older adults. He reflects that his heritage -- the Hispanic culture -- and caring for one another are innate. “Family is a very important part of who we are … nuestras abuelas, nuestras abuelitos (our grandmothers, our grandfathers) there’s a big respect in that….” In the article he also references that in many American communities such as the Navajo Nation, the elders are protected and admired. He then shares an interesting analogy by Robert Egger, his friend and hunger activist, regarding things that we need to keep on embracing including wrinkled people and wrinkled food.

Andrés explained that by “wrinkled food” he was referencing produce that does not look perfect but that it is ripe and delicious. It may be past its prime, but it still has much to offer.

And so …. we are grateful for the vision and the heart behind the mission and the man. José Andrés has taught all of us what we know is important: “caring for one another.”

He has taken the process to a new level by combining resources and strategizing for the greater good and to benefit humankind.

Because of his efforts as collective we are so much stronger.

The catchy title refers to the ability to squeeze all the amazing things out of one’s second chapter in life. In these podcasts, we highlight noteworthy accomplishments of older adults around us and seek to inspire all of us to make the most of life.

In the inaugural podcast, podcast host and FiftyForward Communications Director Susan Sizemore, interviews Yvonne Wood, who spearheaded the efforts for the Tennessee Woman’s Suffrage Monument that now holds a special place in Centennial Park. Wood directed a committee that not only raised the funds but created the vision for the monument created by acclaimed Nashville-based artist Alan LeQuire.

This year marked the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote and history recorded Tennessee as casting the deciding vote to ratify this amendment. This monument celebrates the extraordinary efforts of several Tennessee women crucial to the suffrage movement. Wood, a lifetime advocate for women, directed the centennial celebration.

Our second podcast celebrates the work of volunteers in our community through a conversation with Lillian Schklar, a 95-year-old volunteer active in our community. Schklar, one of the original “Atomic Girls,” shares her experiences working in the war effort in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and how her upbringing led to a lifetime of volunteering.

Schklar was honored with the 2017 Hands On Nashville Mary Catherine Strobel Volunteer Award for her years of work as a FiftyForward AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer where she serves as a Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) tutor. We wondered about the driving force behind this tireless and impressive volunteer; her exuberance for life and for helping others shines in this podcast.

Not long afterward, Dixon’s spouse of 64 years, Isabel, passed away. She was a clinical social worker who spent 30+ years at Family & Children’s Service and was an active volunteer at several organizations.

As her family celebrated their lives, Ashley described Isabel and Dixon Northcutt her grandfather as a lovely man who always encouraged her to stay curious and adventurous. “My very special relationship with my grandparents is one of the main reasons I wanted to work specifically with older adults. I have always found something really special about the role reversal that happens in later life. My grandfather spent his life making sure that our family was taken care of and we had the privilege of supporting him as he aged.” Of her “Grandmar,” she says their house was a “magical place” where Grandmar used play, arts, and reading to stay strong through difficult times.
