Dollar General Literacy Foundation and Kellogg’s collaborate and celebrate volunteers; the results are Gr-r-reat!

By Susan Sizemore FiftyForward Communications Director FiftyForward Friends Learning in Pairs volunteer tutor Judy Goetz has been reconnecting with friends from all corners of the United States. Why are they reaching out to her? She’s gained newfound and unsought celebrity by being featured in a Kellogg’s cereal campaign.

Recently, in celebration of National Literacy Month, Dollar General and Kellogg’s partnered on a new campaign. Here’s My Story features three volunteer tutors – and the students they teach – through the FiftyForward RSVP Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP) program.

The campaign message is timeless and the images and stories of the FLIP student/tutor pairs were featured on specialized boxes of Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes® cereal, Froot Loops® cereal, Frosted Mini Wheats® cereal, and Rice Krispies® cereal. The specially designed packages arrived at more than 14,000 Dollar General locations in September.

In the Nashville area, the FLIP volunteers and their students were really not fully aware of the celebrity and warm reception their stories would receive. When Goetz started getting calls from Virginia, Missouri, Maryland and New Mexico she realized why this effort was so important and goes far beyond being on a box of cereal.

Goetz concurs, “You don’t have to be a teacher, but if you like to work with children it’s a good thing to do ... it’s a really good feeling you made a little difference in this child’s life, however that may be.”

Goetz describes how she discovered her passion could be put to good use. Having just retired and moved to Middle Tennessee she recalled how she wanted to make friends and stay involved. “I am not a good stay-at-home person.” She says the more she learned about the FLIP program she thought, “Throughout my career I have been a teacher. This will be a great match for me and I will be doing what I love and giving back to the community.”

A young man named Antoine made an incredible first impression and affirmed the

passion she had for teaching. “He came in (to our first meeting) carrying a book with his head down. I asked if he’d like to read to me and he was stumbling ... I knew he could not read but was trying to impress me.”

Goetz remembers encouraging him by telling him he had done a good job. She challenged, “If you work with me every Tuesday, I guarantee that by the end of year you’ll be able to read this book.

Each cereal box features the tutor/student pairings: FLIP tutor Judy Goetz and student Jacori (above); FLIP tutor Kathy Pleas and student Jose (above right); and FLIP tutor Neal Buchanan and student Noah.

At end of year, she said Antoine was a different child. The teacher agreed saying he now comes in the door with his head up and smiles. The teacher said, “He needed someone to love on him.”

Just knowing someone was there to help him move ahead gave him confidence. Before that time, he did not feel it (success) could happen for him. He did not want to ask others for help.

He wanted to find out things for himself.

“That’s when I knew I was in the right place and doing the right thing,” said Goetz.

The other two tutors featured in the campaign, Neal Buchanan and Kathy Pleas also have countless heartwarming stories that speak to how giving back and serving as a mentor or tutor can impact lives forever. The special relationship between the student and mentor is palpable. (Read the inspiring stories and see photos at www.fiftyforward.org) Here’s My Story has been very successful and engaging with the campaign netting hundreds of entries by individuals who have posted images of themselves, their children or their favorite book. It’s opened up the lines of communication about reading and about volunteering. What could be better?

Goetz concurs, “You don’t have to be a teacher, but if you like to work with children it’s (volunteering) is a good thing to do. There’s a lot support given to me through FiftyForward and the FLIP program; it’s a really good feeling you made a little difference in this child’s life, however that may be.”

FiftyForward FLIP was one of only 2 programs nationwide selected to participate in the program. The early fall was a whirlwind of

activity for the tutors and their students as they took part in media interviews and a celebration reception in late September.

“We are thrilled that our wonderful tutors have received recognition for their dedication and commitment. Neal, Judy and Kathy represent 120+ senior adult tutors (from all walks of life) who are making a difference in the lives of students in Davidson and Williamson counties,” said FLIP Director Sandra Thomas.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) is a long time FLIP supporter and also funds the FiftyForward Foster Grandparent Program. DGLF is celebrating over 24 years of helping individuals learn to read, prepare for the GED, or learn English. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded more than $140 million to nonprofit organizations and schools that have helped more than nine million individuals advance their literacy and basic education skills.

Thanks to a partnership between Dollar General and Kellogg’s everyday heroes are now stepping up as volunteers. Here’s My Story is creating a new league of champions “that’s Gr-r-reat!”

Precision Medicine The Most Exciting Thing Happening in Healthcare Today!

One-size-fits-all may work for some things (think Snuggies & muumuus). However, in today’s technologically advancing times, one would hope that this would not describe medical care in the United States. But, according to Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), “We depend on the average, the one-sizefits-all approach because it’s the best we’ve got.”

Enter precision medicine. Precision medicine is health care that is based on each individual. It takes into account factors like where you live, what you do, and your family health history. According to NIH, this approach may help doctors and researchers identify more effective prevention and treatment strategies in the future.

Although the term “precision medicine” is relatively new, the concept has been around for many years. For example, a person who needs a blood transfusion is not given blood from a random donor; instead, the donor’s blood type is matched to the recipient to reduce the risk of complications. Precision medicine is also currently used in the cancer field, where drugs are developed to target specific molecular characteristics. Many of us know cancer patients who wonder why they got sick instead of someone else. Precision medicine may help to answer that question in some cases.

FiftyForward is pleased to be selected as one of four agencies to participate in this national research.

Meet our Team:

Kelsey Mahaffey, coordinator, All of Us Research Program. As former center director of FiftyForward Madison Station, Mahaffey has more than 15 years of experience working with older adults. She will lead the effort to collect information from All of Us participants.

Barbara Hunt, administrative assistant is formally trained as a physical therapist, Hunt has a heart for older adults.

She regularly supports the FiftyForward Supportive Care Services team with various administrative tasks and will use her skills to support this research effort.

One champion of precision medicine is Eric Dishman, a former Silicon Valley executive now leading the new NIH All of Us Research Program.

Eric was diagnosed at 19 with a rare form of kidney cancer that baffled his doctors. He tried years of failed treatments until he was given the opportunity to have his DNA mapped. By understanding his genetic makeup, doctors discovered that his kidney cancer acted more like pancreatic cancer. The doctors then tried a pancreatic cancer drug, which Eric Dishman eventually cured him. Eric says, “I’m healthier now at 49 than I was at 19.” Now he is working to speed up research discoveries so more people can benefit from precision medicine in the future.

The All of Us Research Program is an important new program with the goal of collecting health information from 1 million people living in America. The huge amount of data from 1 million participants will help scientists understand better how we differ and what those differences mean to our health—hastening the day when precision medicine may be applied more broadly.

What are your alternatives if you or your spouse need nursing home care?

By Barbara Moss What would happen if you or your spouse went into a nursing home? How would you pay for it? The average cost for a semiprivate room in a nursing home in Nashville last year was about $75,000 annually.

Many seniors are concerned that they would have to spend all their assets in order to qualify for Medicaid. They may also worry that they will lose their home.

There is good news here, especially for married couples. It is not necessary for the spouse at home (under the law called the “Community Spouse”) to be completely impoverished in order for the other spouse (the “Institutionalized Spouse”) to qualify for TennCare.

Here’s the story: Medicaid (called TennCare here in Tennessee) was passed by Congress in 1965 and designed to provide medical care for elderly, blind and disabled poor. Eligibility is sensitive to both assets and income.

Before 1988, all of a couple’s assets were required to be “spent down” so that the ill spouse could qualify for nursing home care.

The couple’s only alternatives were utter impoverishment or divorce. There were articles in the newspapers about elderly women eating dog food so that their husbands could get nursing home care.

In 1988, Congress passed provisions now known as the Spousal Anti-Impoverishment Act. If correctly applied, this law allows the Community Spouse to keep half of the assets with a minimum amount of $24,180 and a maximum of $120,900 (in 2017).

The Institutionalized Spouse must spend his half so that he only owns $2,000. There are “Medicaid friendly” ways to spend down. There are also legal ways to help an unmarried senior quality for TennCare.

TennCare is convoluted and ever changing. To take advantage of the laws and regulations, it is best to consult a lawyer who works with TennCare on a regular basis.

The bottom line is this: When someone who is not already impoverished goes into a nursing home, it’s time to see a lawyer.

If that person has a living husband or wife, assets can be set aside to help the Community Spouse afford living expenses to pay for his or her own care in the future.

Brain Brawlers take 2nd place in the regional tournament

A FiftyForward First is an opportunity —be it simple or elaborate — to try something you’ve never done before. It can be something as simple as trying a new food, learning a new skill, or something exciting like traveling overseas.

Center member pens a book!

Center member Linda Biggs attended The Carnegie Writing Class at FiftyForward Donelson Station and it equipped her with the skills and contacts to tackle writing her childhood autobiography. Her book, Farm Animals, Trains and Hobos, is now available on Amazon.com. The long anticipated literature chronicles her visits to her grandparents farm in the 1950s.

It was a blast to see all the children in their fresh uniforms and backpacks, abuzz with the excitement of the new year. The J.L. Turner Center Brain Brawlers Trivia Team, which won the Greater Nashville AAAD district games in August 2017, came in second place at the Grand Middle Region games in Tullahoma, Tennessee on Sept. 15. Once again, the competition came down to the very last question. This time we came up a little short, but we are so proud of our team!”

The team are the WINNERS of the 2017 GNRC AAAD Regional PlayOff Senior Brain Games! They defeated 4 other teams from the “west region” in a nailbiting event held at the Metro West Police Precinct.

They actually secured the victory on the very last question of the last round, and beat the previous year’s champions.

The Brain Brawlers were the talk of the center with many center members lending their support throughout the competition.

The Council on Aging of Middle Tennessee presented FiftyForward with the inaugural Sage Organizational Award to honor an organization for making a significant impact on the lives of older adults in Middle Tennessee.

On Nov. 16, NPT aired it’s 10th installment of its Aging Matters series.

FiftyForward regularly hosts the series previews at its headquarters with panel discussions featuring local subject experts. The series features a different topic each episode.

This particular episode highlights the challenges of eating healthy as we age. Malnutrition is a growing problem among older adults. Did you know that one in four older adults is malnourished?

It’s important to note malnutrutrion is not always due to poor eating habits. As we age, our bodies simply do not process foods and nutrients the same way they did when we were younger. Swallowing and digestion may change as we age and medications can affect how nutrients are absorbed by the body. Many older adults face everyday challenges to access good nutrition. Sometimes it is challenging to prepare healthy meals if standing for long periods of time is difficult.

This winter, check on neighbors, friends and loved ones to ensure they are getting the assistance they need.

This award does not stand alone. It belongs to all of our family members (teammates, board members, volunteers, donors and community partners) who yesterday, today and in the future are helping FiftyForward meet the needs of older adults.

College Grove Strings is made up of five sisters – Charis, Cana, Christa, Carmel and Chloe MacKrell.

Hermitage Church (on the grounds of The Hermitage) Featuring gospel group Broken Join us for our annual commemoration of those enslaved at The Hermitage and throughout the country. The service will feature prominent gospel group Broken. The performance will conclude with an invocation and procession to the slavery memorial “Follow the Drinking Gourd” behind Hermitage Church.

150 flowers will be laid, marked with the names of all those known to have been enslaved at The Hermitage. The cost is $22 which includes your ticket and the bus ride to and from the Hermitage.

The 12th annual Martin Masters event, a fine art show and sale was held Oct. 20 and 21 at FiftyForward Martin Center. At the event’s opening reception, attendees enjoyed lively music, hors d’oeuvres and wine sponsored by Grapevine Wine and Spirits and G Catering and Events.

A portion of the proceeds from the Martin Masters Fine Art Show and Sale benefits the center’s annual fund, providing financial support to expand the center’s fine arts program, as well as other services including fitness, health and wellness, volunteerism, and lifelong learning.

In October, Larry Keeton was the guest of honor at the 16th anniversary celebration of the theatre that bears his name. The Larry Keeton Theatre celebrated 16 years of presenting quality dinner show theatre to the Nashville community. Organized

by Jamie London, administrator of the Senior Center for the Arts/The Larry Keeton Theatre, the event honors Keeton for his vision and legacy. The event featured performances from past cast members along with visits with family members and colleagues as well as audience members of all ages.

FiftyForward Meals on Wheels Impact week, held in October, was a great success! Nashville singer/songwriter and longtime volunteer Barry Coggins led the fundraising efforts for the 18th annual FiftyForward Meals on Wheels Impact Week which combined his love of golf and music. Friends of Meals on Wheels were able to enjoy a Songwriters’ Night, Barryoke and the annual Meals on Wheels Golf Tournament while supporting the essential work of the Meals on Wheels program. FiftyForward Donelson Station Casino Night FiftyForward Donelson Station held its inaugural Casino Night event in late September which featured several stations (blackjack, poker, Texas Hold ‘em, craps and slot machines) to the delight of center and community members. The event also featured live jazz music and a wonderful reception.

Podcasts are a wonderful way to learn something new

By Jenni Hargrove Over the past three years, I’ve fallen in love, deep and hard, with podcasts. I love podcasts so much more than television because I don’t feel like I’m glued to a screen that strains my eyes, and most of them contain at least some educational value, so I don’t feel guilty about spending time listening to them. Podcasts keep me company in my car through Nashville traffic, while I fold laundry and clean the kitchen, on walks with my dogs on the Greenways, and while I crochet or make crafts on the weekends.

If you’re new to the podcast world, let me explain why they’re so great.

There are millions of podcasts available for download, in every genre you can imagine. I recommend thinking through the times and places where you’ll listen to podcasts before you start your search. Dr. Ming Wang treats FiftyForward staff to a special program of “Dancing with the Doc” In addition to being a well-respected Nashville eye surgeon, Dr. Ming Wang is also an award winning ballroom dancer. He recently joined the FiftyForward staff, FiftyForward Knowles members and volunteers, for a very entertaining program of “Dancing with the Doc.” This special dance session was coordinated by FiftyForward Executive Director Janet Jernigan. Everyone enjoyed getting to know the doctor in an informal setting and Dr. Wang truly enjoyed his unique experience with them.

Along with his professional dance partner, Shenhua Yang, Dr. Wang demonstrated a number of moves. “I always have a wonderful time visiting the FiftyForward locations,” said Wang, “and I look forward to future programs” at their various locations in the Nashville area.

In college, Dr. Wang was a member of the U.S. Collegiate Champion Harvard University Ballroom Dance Team and is a former National Finalist in the United States Pro-Am International 10 Dance National Championship.

Dr. Wang selected some members to be his partner to showcase their dancing abilities. One of those selected was Janet Jernigan and she surprised everyone as she demonstrated some excellent moves. “She could be a pro,” said Wang as their dance was ending.

He grew up in China during the devastating Cultural Revolution when millions of youth were deported and Dr. Ming Wang demonstrates some dance condemned to a lifetime of moves with Janet Jernigan, FiftyForward hard labor and poverty. As executive director. a teenager, he learned to dance and perform with a musical instrument in order to join the government propaganda program so he could avoid such an unpleasant future.

Dr. Wang’s incredible real life story inspired a character in the national bestselling book, God’s Not Dead. The book paved the way for the very popular 2014 blockbuster movie of the same title and included a character that portrayed Dr. Wang.

China-based Aier Eye Hospital chain, plans to expand into the U.S. market in 2017 with a long-term goal of opening several eye clinics across the country. Aier-USA will be based in Nashville and Dr. Wang has been selected as CEO of the new organization, which will help the U.S. economy by creating many new employment opportunities across America.

Dr. Ming Wang was honored with a Crowning Achievement Award honoree during the 2017 FiftyForward Crown Affair celebration. This award exemplifies a giving spirit, and honors those dedicated to serving others not only through FiftyForward, but through other nonprofit agencies in the community.

Holiday cheer

Oak Hill students continue 30+ year tradition of assembling holiday baskets to bring cheer to older adults in the community Students, parents and teachers from The Oak Hill School continued a 30+ year tradition of assembling and delivering holiday baskets for older adults in the community. Baskets included handcrafted greeting cards, snacks and fresh fruit and to bring a little sustenance and happiness to the lives of older adults in the community.

Pictured are many of the helping hands that made this effort possible as well as a select group of Oak Hill students delivering the baskets to participants at FiftyForward Adult Day Services. The remaining 400+ baskets were delivered just in time for Thanksgiving via FiftyForward team members and volunteers to customers and program participants who rely on the agency for advocacy and access to community resources.

It’s Just Stuff! by Connie Sue Davenport

Collections that were once all the rage are now targeted for downsizing Once upon a time -- actually it was just before the year 2000 — everyone I knew collected something. In so many homes as an appraiser, I have seen the result of this national pastime.

The first large collection I was asked to appraise was rolling pins. The client brought me into a room with a huge barn-wood wall, covered in them. Her collection began when she was given her grandmother’s rolling pin. For years she had bought or been given rolling pins of various sizes, colors, material, and age. It was impressive.

Through the years I’ve seen rooms, sheds, and entire houses dedicated to people’s collections of items inspired by found, favored and inherited items. Examples include model trains, dolls, clothing, purses, jewelry, farm implements, tools, nutcrackers, porcelain, glass, pottery, Wedgwood, yard-long pictures, telephones, medical tools, grocery displays, souvenir glass, domestic irons, pink flowers, teacups, toothpick holders, model cars, carved masks, walking sticks, doorknobs, typewriters, corner cupboards, walnut furniture, light wood, Tennessee anything, writing implements, antique books, etc. I could go on and on.

Here’s how to find the moneymakers of your collection, and also see examples of groupings and collections recently sold.

I think of Hummel figurines from Germany as a transitional collection. After World War II, during the creation of the Baby Boomer generation, young families were charmed by figurines inspired by Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel’s drawings of the children in her village. By the time I was asked to appraise the collection, it had grown to over 80 pieces and sometimes as many as three hundred.

By the 1970s, collectibles made overseas in large quantities began trickling into the United states. By the 1980s, that trickle had become a tsunami. Entire stores were opened to offer the latest editions of various collectible items. Today, I delight in your collections of Snow Babies, collector plates, Lladro, Swarovski, Beanie Babies, clowns, Christmas ornaments, lunch boxes, Harley Davidson, Elvis, collector tins, and Barbies. Large lighted showcases, added shelving, and platforms are often constructed to display quaint villages and fantasy universes.

We went CRAZY — but now we’re over it.

Many of these collections are currently sold at auction, often after the first and finer examples are culled by the owners. The sold prices tend to be low unless the collection is quite rare and carefully curated. Attribution to a famous, or better yet, infamous person helps increase the value and can be used for marketing purposes. It is a buyer’s market.

The new national pastime is down-sizing, and our collections need to be distilled to a few favorites. Most every category has a few high dollar pieces that were made in smaller quantities making them limited or rare.

Think logically about the information.

It doesn’t mean you can immediately ask and get the highest value listed. There may have been dueling heirs forcing the monetary value higher. Scroll down to get the whole picture of value.

4) I disregard values with a line through them.
