“At age 76, it is very challenging to start Acro Yoga which is a combination of acrobatics and yoga.

I am attending a class at Vanderbilt and have a wonderful teacher. The other students are about 50 years younger than me but so far I’m hanging in there and enjoying the challenge. I always wanted to be in the circus and I guess this is as close as I’m going to get.”

She adds, “I’d rather wear out than rust out. I’d rather die of stress than boredom.”

By Julia Bonner Two times a week, Caryn, a certified personal trainer, heads to her client Ruth’s house for their regular appointment. But this isn’t a regular appointment between client and professional. It has become a meaningful and life-changing friendship.

In-home services are becoming more widely available as Nashville and Middle Tennessee grow. There is great interest in serving the senior market as many older adults need assistance.

FiftyForward has been providing this type of “concierge” service to assist older adults for decades. Give the gift of connection

By Gretchen Funk, Director FiftyForward Supportive Care Services In our “wired” world, why does it often seem so difficult to have the time to really stay close to the people we care about? Studies have repeatedly found that connection and belonging are essential for a healthy and happy life for all of us – no matter our age. Humans are social by nature, and need close connections to be healthy. In fact, isolation and loneliness are big health risks.

The United States is now an increasingly mobile society. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that Americans on average move approximately twelve times over the course of a lifetime. Distances create difficulties for all age groups and are particularly hard on older adults. AARP and the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging and Disability are launching a campaign to help recognize and discuss the problem of isolation. They estimate that about 8 million people age 50 and over face isolation. AARP reports that isolation carries the same health risk as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. A study of 1,600 older adults found that when they identified as lonely, they had a 59 percent greater rate of cognitive decline.

Another study found that isolation doubled the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Those are some sobering figures.

•

And, lastly, if you can’t be there in person, connect by telephone, Skype, email, cards and letters. Help ensure everyone in the family has technology available and knows how to use it. As a New Year’s resolution, decide to call or send cards more frequently. The ring of the telephone and the visit of the mail carrier are often the sole daily highlight for many seniors.

Let’s work to ensure that everyone benefits from the close, caring relationships that make lives healthier and more meaningful.

What can we do?

Recognize the problem and face it. Help the older adults in your life talk about feelings of loneliness and isolation and brainstorm solutions with them.

•

Encourage participation. Volunteer opportunities are available for people of all ages. Lifelong learning centers like those of FiftyForward provide seniors with places to connect with others. Accompany your mother or father to a center while you are visiting them (there are always fun, festive programs at centers) because a first visit alone can be hard. Of course, remember at centers everyone was once the “new kid” and members are very welcoming.

•

Consider older adult residential options carefully. Senior residences offer the built-in advantage of living with others of similar ages and, over time, new residents build connections and engage in activities together. Choosing a residence fairly close to loved ones makes it much easier to stop in and say a quick hello, share a cup of coffee, pick up some groceries.

For the overwhelming number of seniors who want to remain in their own homes, isolation is a big concern. Programs like FiftyForward Meals on Wheels provide more than a healthy meal, essential as that is. They also offer daily human contact with caring meal delivery volunteers. In the FiftyForward Meals on Wheels program, we have volunteers who have delivered meals for more than 20 years and recognize how much their friendly visit means.

Heimerdinger Foundation/Meals 4 Health & Healing provides hope and healing through meal preparation and delivery

RSVP volunteers prep and deliver meals for clients in the Meals 4 Health & Healing program.

L

ike many nonprofits, Meals 4 Health and Healing’s story began with a loss. In 2010, Kathie Heimerdinger’s husband Mike, the former Offensive Coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. In an effort to meet the doctors’ strict diet recommendations, Kathie dove into researching healthy eating habits, experimenting with new recipes and ingredients.

These volunteers and the caring community they create for cancer patients is extraordinary.

As Kathie says “they are the hands and feet of the Meals 4 Health and Healing program and provide the energy, joy and love that is packed into every meal that is delivered.”

Her creative immune-boosting meals yielded remarkable results, not only in extending Mike’s life for months beyond the doctors’ prognosis, but in reducing some of the unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy.

Recent research supports Kathie’s understanding that what she calls “God foods”— nutritious foods free of pesticides, additives, and anything artificial — lead to profoundly improved health outcomes for those facing life-threatening illnesses.

After Mike passed away, Kathie and her children started a foundation in his memory, with the mission to help others by providing similar immune-boosting foods and meals. Meals 4 Health and Healing pairs cancer patients with client liaisons who coach them on healthy eating and provide support as they undergo chemotherapy. The program is modeled after the highly successful Ceres Community Project in Sonoma, California – an agency Kathie and Mike Heimerdinger 6 | Forward Focus

became aware of on their quest to explore healthy food options for cancer patients.

Although the Meals 4 Health and Healing program has only been in operation since 2013, it has delivered 32,000 meals to more than 220 clients. Clients receive eight immune-boosting meals a week for a period of three months. After more than three months, clients can continue meal delivery for a small fee; however, if a client is unable to financially afford the program, Meals 4 Health and Healing will continue to provide meals free of charge.

This valuable program is sustained by the generosity and the support of donors, sponsors, in-kind donations, and a small army of volunteers. Every week approximately 75 volunteers participate in the Meals 4 Health & Healing program. Volunteers provide three to six hours of service and work as client liaisons, mentor chefs, gardeners, food preparation, teen chefs, and delivery angels. These volunteers and the caring community they create for cancer patients is extraordinary. As Kathie says “they are the hands and feet of the Meals 4 Health and Healing program and provide the energy, joy and love that is packed into every meal that is delivered.”

The FiftyForward Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is a proud partner of Meals 4 Health and Healing. RSVP members are among the corps of volunteers assisting with meal prep, delivery and client services. Volunteer opportunities United Way of Metropolitan Nashville seeks volunteers

Become a VITA Volunteer and assist with tax prep Tax preparation can feel like rocket science. United Way of Metropolitan Nashville volunteer Marian Ott has seen the looks of confusion and desperation on the faces of some of the clients she’s helped through United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA*) program over the past 10 years. “There are people who come into our site trembling because they are so scared,” says Ott. Ott enjoys working with numbers. She’s one of the many VITA volunteers preparing free returns for individuals and families who qualify based on income. For those who aren’t as comfortable with numbers, there are other opportunities to *VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and is a volunteer.

“If you are not comfortable preparing tax returns, we also need greeters and people who can sort through documents and make sure clients have everything they need to help us file their taxes,” states Ott.

nationwide program that runs from the end of January through April 15. IRS-certified volunteers prepare tax returns for free for individuals & families earning less than $64,000. During the 2015 tax season, United Way and its partners offered free tax prep at more than 40 locations across Middle Tennessee.

Ott is most grateful when her work transforms a client’s life in ways they never imagined.

“I remember this elderly couple — a husband and wife — close to 90,” said Ott. “Apparently, they had all of their tax documents assembled and they got misplaced. It felt like the end of the world to them.”

The FiftyForward Foster Grandparent Program is looking for a few good grandparents to take Nashville’s children to the next level of success.

I told them, ‘We will file an extension and another form that will help you get the information we need to complete your return.’”

The couple came back to the VITA site later, completed their filing process and couldn’t believe their result.

“They received a refund and I was so glad to be able to help them,” she said. “I didn’t grow up in Nashville and my dad lives somewhere else. I hope this is my way of paying it forward and perhaps people will be kind to him.”

VITA volunteers like Ott helped 15,000 Middle Tennessee families receive nearly $24 million in tax refunds last year.

John Beard fills his life and the lives of others with pool and partnership at FiftyForward

By Susan Sizemore, FiftyForward Communications Director Anyone who frequents FiftyForward Donelson Station will recognize John Beard. He’s the bright-eyed, lively gentleman – 93 years young to be exact – who can be found almost every morning playing pool.

A younger center member, David Kattau, who is often part of the poolplaying crowd, laughingly says, “Actually you know the center is open if John’s car is there.” John’s son Eddy adds, “He’d be here on Sunday if the center was open.”

John’s story is compelling. He has lived through many hardships but credits determination and a positive outlook to his longevity. He says, “You can’t sit down and give up.”

“Every day I wake up in pain. My arthritis reminds me that I am not as young as I used to be, but I get out and get active,” said John. “That’s important.” He’s spent much of his time as an outdoorsman hunting squirrels and birds – a sport he enjoys with a number of his family members.

In fact his longevity is remarkable considering that at the age of 9, he was diagnosed with bone cancer. Some of the treatment required him to keep the bone exposed. Even at a young age John recalls he was focused and determined. Intent on not letting “that disability” keep him from being a kid, he enjoyed boxing and excelled at baseball, especially as a pitcher.

In later years, sometime in his 70s, John would break his leg playing baseball as he slid into first base.

Determined. That is John Beard.

Although he doesn’t play baseball any more, he does surround himself with others who do including many generations of family members. Ten years ago he acquired a pacemaker and Eddy says his father is like “the energizer bunny.” He stays busy.

John’s history with FiftyForward can be traced back to 1985. At the time he was working at Hume-Fogg High School as a supply clerk, a position he loved (and from which he retired after serving 31 years with the Metro Board of Education). While at the school, John befriended a young student, Jimmy Byrum, who challenged him to go down to FiftyForward, then in the old Tarbox School, where “there are lots of rich widows looking for a man.”

So that’s just what John did, sort of.

Having lost his wife, Myra, when she was just 47 years old, John was a single father with five sons. He was doing the best he could. With one son still at home, he was lonesome.

John’s eyes beam as he recalls getting dressed up for that first visit to FiftyForward. He enthusiastically recounts meeting a woman named Lillie Mae Young who was intent on getting him engaged in things at 8 | Forward Focus

the center and specifically in dancing. “The story of our relationship is another entire story,” he adds with a wink.

Lillie Mae encouraged John to dance even when he John and Eddy Beard explained he had never been on the dance floor. John toyed with taking classes at the center, but Lillie Mae invited John to her house where she would teach him to dance. John says, “Things took off from there.”

Lillie Mae shared that she had also lost her spouse a few years prior. The two became kindred souls on and off the dance floor. They both had apartments but decided to buy a house together. His eyes lit up as he talked about how no one could do the Charleston like her. She was the “pearl of the party.”

John references Lillie Mae as a “fantastic lady who fit me pretty good.”

She had no kids, loved my boys and fit in with my big family. Although ten years older than John, she was active and enthusiastic about everything in life. When her health took a turn for the worse a few years ago, John served as her loving caregiver as long as he could. She passed away at the age of 101.

Other losses in life shaped the man John Beard is today. His young “adopted son” Jimmy committed suicide as did his son, Jeff.

Another son, Ken, died of cancer in his mid 30s. He shares his story and his grief freely so others can learn and understand that perspective is everything in life. John is intent on filling his life with happiness and being as active as he can.

A couple years ago, John learned the bone cancer had returned to his leg and medical professionals suggested amputation. John declined. He’s survived two significant car accidents that totaled his vehicles including one that was a double rollover.

“I believe all adults, especially older adults, need to stay active,” says John.

“Get off the couch and get out and about.”

He’s determined to press on and does not let misfortunes in life stop him from spending priceless time with others including his son, Eddy, who recently retired and joins him twice a week at the FiftyForward Donelson Station pool tables.

When asked who is the better pool player, John, who’s been playing since the age of 14, says it’s “nip and tuck.”

That sounds a bit like his philosophy of life as well. Although some days are more of a struggle than others, John finds his blessings and gives them freely as he greets each day and visitor to the center with a cue stick and a smile.

“I believe all adults, especially older adults, need to stay active,” says John. “Get off the couch and get out and about.”

Get immunized this winter to guard against flu and pneumonia

By Stephanie Williams With winter just around the corner, it’s important that we’re ready for all that comes with it. If you are a caregiver of children, you ensure that students have their required vaccinations to start the school year. And while we often think of kids when we think of vaccines, it is important to remember that adults also need them.

Without immunizations, adults are at high risk for certain diseases such as influenza, pneumococcal disease, meningitis, tetanus, and whooping cough – diseases that are dangerous and can be deadly.

Some adults are at an even higher risk for contracting pneumococcal disease. Some estimates show that as many as one-third of adults ages 18 - 64 have a chronic medical condition that increases their risk for getting pneumonia. This includes people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which covers a number of lung diseases such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis and asthma. Pneumonia causes COPD to progress and worsen during and even after recovery.

There are currently more than 15 million people living with COPD in the United States and 500,000 here in Tennessee. Another 12 million Americans are developing the disease or have yet to be diagnosed.

Tennessee currently has the third highest rate of COPD diagnoses, after only West Virginia and Kentucky, and it is the third leading cause of death among Tennesseans, accounting for nearly 2,000 deaths each year.

We put a lot of emphasis on getting babies and children vaccinated, which we should, but adults must also be up-to-date on their shots, especially adults living with added risk factors. These adults should have access to all available vaccinations to prevent the risk of contracting preventable diseases including pneumococcal.

Pneumococcal disease – easy to catch, but often hard to get rid of – and it can have long-term effects on the health of those living with pre-existing conditions.

Vaccines are the best tool at preventing pneumococcal disease and adults with chronic conditions should be vaccinated to protect their short and long-term health.

Tennessee currently has the third highest rate of COPD diagnoses, after only West Virginia and Kentucky, and it is the third leading cause of death among Tennesseans, accounting for nearly 2,000 deaths each year.

It is recommended that adults age 65 and older are vaccinated against pneumococcal disease, but adults 18 - 64 with risk factors such as COPD, heart disease, asthma, diabetes and other chronic conditions are at a higher risk of contracting the disease. If you have any of these chronic conditions, it is best to consult your health care provider in order to ensure you are protected.

FiftyForward Meals on Wheels FORE the Love of Meals This past October, FiftyForward and Barry Coggins hosted a trio of events for FiftyForward Meals on Wheels.

Seventeen years ago, Nashville songwriter and golf enthusiast Barry Coggins launched an effort combining his interests to support and raise funds for a cause near and dear to his heart. Coggins has served up food and sometimes a song, for more than 20 years, as a volunteer for FiftyForward Meals on Wheels.

His efforts and enthusiasm for volunteering and for bringing smiles to meal recipients have made him a popular and valued volunteer and an extension of the Meals on Wheels recipients’ family.

Part of the fundraiser includes two opportunities to hear live music and to be an active participant.

Coggins once again brought songwriter friends together at The Douglas Corner Bar for a Writer’s Night as well as hosting his fun “Barry-oke” night at the Corner Bar a few nights later.

All in good fun to raise funds!

FiftyForward Donelson Station Fall Festival and BBQ FiftyForward Donelson Station held its 30th annual Fall Festival and BBQ for the Donelson community. Larry Keeton, for whome the Larry Keeton Theatre is named, was honored at this year’s festival for his years of dedication and support of this community event.

FiftyForward was honored to partner this year with Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee. Girls who completed the 5K course and crafted hand-made greeting cards for homebound clients race day morning earned their Viva la Diva patch.

Approximately 500 runners participated in the race which raises funds for FiftyForward programs and services for those 50+. The Gift Of Today When does a problem become a gift? When does a tragedy turn into a triumph? When does something grim get overwhelmed by a wave of love and affection, waves and waves like the ocean at high tide?

It was June 2006, and I’d come back to California for my parents’ 50th anniversary. My dad’s colon cancer was in his liver, but he’d decided to go ahead and have the surgery that would give him a good chance at survival. Three days before the anniversary, we saw the doctor. “I’m sorry, Mr. Sheahan.” It was too late for that surgery. It was too late for everything, as it turned out, except time with dad, seven and some sweet months of it, until he died on Feb. 18, 2007, at 2:18 p.m., as the winter sun eased behind the blue foothills toward the Pacific.

It sounds horribly sad, doesn’t it? It was. It still is. Except it was also wonderful. Such is the way of losing someone you love, of getting a terrible diagnosis, bad news, heart-stopping, faint-worthy stuff. (I did almost pass out when the doctor told us. Just like in the movies.) What was so wonderful? Telling dad how much I loved him. Telling him, as we waited at the stop light near the VA, “Dad, you are the kindest man I have ever known.” Hearing him say, “Really? Why, thank you, honey.”

Having a young, insightful VA counselor tell me, as I was sobbing at the hospice nurses’ station, “You were given a gift. If your dad didn’t have cancer, you’d still be in Nashville, seeing him twice a year, maybe.”

Cancer, a gift? Really, God? How about a Starbucks card?

But dare you call cancer a gift when it clobbers someone young? I get her point. Cancer gave me some of my favorite days with dad. But cancer is still a thief.

There are 40 Sheahan grandchildren, I’m #8, one of the oldest. We keep in close touch with Facebook, photos, and visits to the family homestead in Kansas. Around October, I read a message from #37, dear Sarah, age 42. Colon cancer. Liver. I nearly threw my laptop across the room and against the brick fireplace. NO. NO. NO. Days later, worse news. A rare, aggressive form called neuroendocrine carcinoma. Sarah Pratt*, beloved wife and mother of three, fiercely loved by her five siblings and dozens, dozens of cousins — her mother the youngest of nine and dad the oldest of 16. Sarah Pratt, 23 years a speech pathologist — hundreds of kids leave her classroom with confidence because of her loving, life-changing expertise. Sarah moves through her world with gentleness and warmth.

Despite being handed the worst ever news she is still laughing with her friends and family because that is what they do. Laugh and pray.

Pray and cry. Talk and work and play. It is all prayer, a family thing, a human thing. It is a good thing and a gift, and if you can do it and let people love you in the middle of a horrible situation you find out there is sweetness after all. Sarah is swimming in it just now. As soon as news got out the small-town Kansas wheels got rolling and the fundraisers began. Schools, churches, the hometown teams (in at least two hometowns), it keeps on coming. Nearly 500 south central Kansans (and others, like me) are wearing shirts with “WE CAN BEAT THIS TOGETHER” and “PRATT’S POSSE” in zebra-striped lettering (that’s the

“color” for NE cancer). Shirts or no, when it comes to Sarah, our hearts are on our sleeves.

Here’s what’s on her heart, in a note of thanks read at a fundraising walk at one of her schools ... imagine saying this about the cancer that threatens your still-young life: “I appreciate the opportunity to bring awareness to this rare cancer.” She quotes from some of her favorite children’s books, about the diagnosis: “A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” regarding her mom’s attitude (and really, hers), from Shel Silverstein: How much good is inside a day? Depends on how good you live ‘em. How much love inside a friend? Depends on how much you give ‘em.” That’s how Sarah was raised, and her mom, and her uncle, my dad. Life on the farm – or anywhere – is a gift, every day.

Here’s Sarah on the matter: “I have tried to pack so much good inside each day – and I’ve certainly been overwhelmed by the love, support and prayers offered me and my family by my students, co-workers, and friends.

So each day since Oct. 3rd, I’ve been trying to live for today. Like A. A. Milne said in the Adventures of Winnie the Pooh “What day is it?” asked Winnie the Pooh. “It’s today,” squeaked Piglet. “My favorite day,” said Pooh. I can honestly say that I’ve had more favorite days this month than I’ve allowed myself to enjoy in the past.”

More favorite days since a Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, like the one that almost made me faint? Yes. Because today is always her favorite day. That, I think, is really the gift. Happy Today, Sarah.

What the Tech?

Using Tech to help others this season I’m a young woman in my twenties, and my older friends and family members often make comments to me about aging. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told that I need to enjoy my youth before my muscles and joints start aching all the time, before I start feeling tired throughout the day and before I lose my memory. What these acquaintances don’t know is that I already suffer from many problems associated with growing old.

During my last year of college, I suffered the onset of a rare autoimmune disease that really knocked the wind out of me. For more than a year, I experienced very severe symptoms including daily panic attacks, extreme weakness, difficulty walking long distances, and uncontrollable stuttering. Though I’m on the upswing now, those months were very taxing for me, both emotionally and physically.

I truly don’t know how I would have made it through that period without the daily (and even hourly) support I received from my loved ones.

One surprise I found during this period was that my social needs were suddenly and dramatically different from those of a “normal” and healthy person. While I generally like to spend time with my friends by cheering on the Predators at loud, raucous hockey games or by competing in intense rounds of trivia, back then I was spending my months of recovery feeling ecstatic whenever a friend would come over to my apartment and silently play Hangman with me on old-school notebooks … partly because Hangman is one of the few social activities you can enjoy without the ability to speak properly.

There are countless ways you can support those in need with the help of 21st century technology.

When gift giving opportunitiies present themselves, I encourage you to think about the unexpected needs your friends and family members may have. There are countless ways you can support those in need with the help of 21st century technology.

Do you know an adult child or parent who is a family caregiver to a relative needing around-the-clock care? When full-time caregivers find a spare moment to themselves, they often have to spend that valuable free time running errands or taking care of chores around the house. Instead of buying your favorite caregiver a fancy Christmas gift they may not have the time to appreciate, consider giving them a subscription to Shipt, an online grocery delivery service, or TAKL, a website that lets you hire temporary workers who can complete household chores for you. These services take care of mundane-yetnecessary tasks that can allow deserving homecare providers a chance to have time for hobbies again.

Another gift you can give to loved ones in need is simply taking the time and effort to understand what they’re going through. For example, a common disease found among seniors is dementia. Though dementia itself obviously causes hardship to afflicted patients, the lack of understanding family members can also be a huge burden.

Fortunately, in Nashville, an organization called Senior Helpers offers free “Virtual Dementia Tours” which allow you to spend about fifteen minutes experiencing the same conditions as a dementia patient. The tour ends with a debriefing by a Senior Helper who explains some simple actions you can take each day to make dementia a little less impeding on the life of your suffering family member.

Even as you shop for goods of any sort, remember the companies who actually produce the goods you purchase. Major retailers are able to push prices of consumer goods to all-time lows by using unethical suppliers, who do not pay their employees a livable wage or provide safe workplace conditions. You can do your part to alleviate poverty and unsafe workplaces by ordering your gifts through the Fair Trade Finder app, created by Fair Trade USA. This app serves as a database for you to find delicious baked goods, fun toys, and cozy clothes without having to wonder if your purchase is adversely affecting workers around the world. Don’t forget that shopping local also helps small businesses thrive in your community.

Get the gift of tax relief or tax freeze (You must qualify before April 5, 2017 for the programs to be effective for the 2016 tax year.)

Don’t be left out in the cold. Seniors (65 or older by Dec. 31, 2016) or disabled veterans may qualify for tax relief or a tax freeze in NashvilleDavidson County.

In November 2006 the current tax freeze program was approved

by Tennessee voters in a constitutional amendment referendum.

Metropolitan Nashville-Davidson County became the first jurisdiction in the state to establish a tax freeze program. Under the program, qualifying homeowners age 65 and older can “freeze” the tax due on their property at the amount for the year they qualify, even if tax rates increase.

Applicants must present: • Proof of age - birth certificate, Medicare card, driver’s license, passport, etc.

•

Proof of ownership - current tax bill or receipt, recorded deed, etc.

•

Evidence property is principal residence – voter registration card, etc. Income records must also be provided showing the total income of all owners of the property during the past year does not exceed $41,660 (for tax freeze) or $29,180 (for tax relief) for Davidson County.

Income records include Federal tax returns or other items acceptable to the Trustee. All applicants must sign an income verification form permitting the Trustee to contact IRS, SSA or the State Division of Property Assessment to verify income.

The application is a public record, but the financial documents remain confidential.

Applications due April 5 Applications for the property tax freeze must be filed by April 5 each year. New applicants may come to the Office of the Trustee, but no appointment is required. Wouldn’t your children be relieved to be told that you’ve done the advance planning so that if you become incapacitated, you have appointed someone (a spouse, adult child or close friend) to help with financial and health care decisions? Would you sleep better knowing that the will you’ve put off writing for decades is finally complete and in a safe place? Have you told your family what life-sustaining treatment you want if you are terminally ill, in a coma, or suffer from dementia and can’t make those decisions? Finally, what about giving your family burial instructions and giving them healthcare directives to use if you suffer from dementia or another illness?

Here’s a checklist of the legal documents that can help you plan for the future: •

Power of attorney for healthcare. You can always make your own decisions when you have capacity. When you don’t, you need someone who knows your beliefs and who will be an advocate for you. It’s best to name one agent and not two or more to minimize disagreement. Have a discussion with your family to tell them whom you have chosen. Truly, it’s a burden more than an honor, so try not to be swayed by the fear that someone’s feelings will be hurt.

•

Power of attorney for finances. You may find that powers of attorney are described as “durable.” It’s a throwback term to the common law of England, where powers of attorney disappeared if you became mentally incapacitated—the exact moment when you need one. For this type of power, it would be wise to name a family member who is good with managing money.

•

Advance directive. This document describes what type of life-sustaining treatment you want if you are in a coma, are terminally ill, or have dementia. In a medical environment, you will always get pain relief, water to drink and food to eat. You may also direct that CPR, tube feeding and other life-sustaining directives be withheld if your quality of life is diminished (in case of dementia, brain injury, or terminal condition with no hope of improvement). The advance directive will spell out your wishes and is an important step for you and your loved ones, as end-of-life decisions also carry with them intense emotion. To be enforceable, your signature must be notarized or witnessed by two adults not related to you.

•

Living will. This document is like an advance directive but typically not as extensive.

•

Will. A will that is properly executed makes it easier for your family to dispose of your “stuff” according to your wishes. If a will is not produced, it will be left to statutes and the probate court to decide who gets your “stuff.”

•

Trust. If you don’t want probate—either the expense or the public nature of it—a trust operates just like a will, but in private.

•

Other directions. On a personal note, when my mom suffered from dementia, we didn’t know what she would have liked. It’s important to consider writing these things down, in addition to funeral directions. A simple list that spells out your personal care and funeral wishes can calm the emotions of your loved ones during a heartbreaking time and ensure that you are treated and honored in the manner you desire. My husband and I spent a fun hour (I’m serious) on a recent drive developing a list for our respective children. I want chocolate and he doesn’t. We even decided that we wanted our ashes sprinkled where are dogs are buried. And we added that, if the new home owners wouldn’t cooperate, our kids could just throw our ashes over the fence. You can tell we love our four-legged friends.

I’ve always been a fan of gifts that are not just “more things.” Give it a try for any gift giving occasion and sleep better in the future.

Door knockers, bowls and an inherited cabinet bring collectors interesting facts and value Dear Connie Sue, We purchased this cast iron “Devil” door knocker at an auction several years ago. I have recently noticed similar pieces on eBay which are priced quite high.

Similar bowls sell from $30 to $65 and your base may add a dozen dollars.

I think it is unique, and would appreciate your opinion on its worth. It appears to have been repaired/welded near one of the horns, and it has a screw in the back of the knocker.

Hello Connie Sue, The cabinet pictured below belongs to my mother, who inherited it from my great aunt in the early 1980s. I know that the cabinet previously belonged to my great aunt’s mother in law. I know nothing more about its history other than the fact that they all lived in the area of Cleveland, Ohio.

Jannes, Nashville Dear Jannes, Yes, your research is correct. Buyers and sellers describe your scary face man with horns as Bacchus. He was a mythical god of food, wine and pleasure. Hopeful sellers have placed asking prices as high as $450 for cast iron Bacchus-face door knockers. Two recently sold on eBay for $250 and $50. Both were intact, and 14” tall. The rusty one sold for $250.

Dear Connie Sue, Many years ago, I bought two bridal bowls, supposedly from the early 19th century. I am forwarding you the email with the pictures. Could you give me some information about them?

Linda, online Dear Linda, In the late 1800s, brides were often given art glass baskets on metal bases with a fancy bale handle. It’s this rich history that encouraged American glass companies to recreate the forms and traditions with the help of modern methods of production in the 1900s.

Your pink, ruffled and fluted edge, cased glass bowl is Fenton’s Silver Crest pattern in light pink, made around 1950. I don’t recall seeing one on a footed base though.

The light green, rolled edge bowl on base indicates it is older – 1930-45 and about the same price online. Both have enamel paint. If the metal is marked “Sterling,” we need to talk again.

Gregory, Mt. Juliet Dear Gregory, Sears Roebuck & Co., in their 1908 catalog, offered and described your family’s china cabinet as an exceptional value, with bent glass sides and a large glass display window in front. It was made of kiln-dried oak in a golden finish. All 150 pounds of it could be shipped from their Southern Ohio factory to the rail station nearest the buyer. The cost 108 years ago was $8.75.

Today, similar china cabinets sell from $150 to $550.

I hope you can keep your heirloom cabinet in the family. It’s in excellent condition, and as the picture suggests, these old bowfronts can hold lots of memories in the form of tableware and mementos.
