CBD oil – the magic elixir?

What older adults should know about buying cannabidiol

We are always hearing about the latest health craze as baby boomers and Gen Xers continue to embrace active aging.

Nontraditional, eastern health practices like reiki, tai chi, qi gong, and reflexology are being explored alongside CrossFit and Barre classes. Individuals are testing the combinations of self-care and exercise that work for their individual bodies. This also includes the use of aromatherapy, essential oils, herbs, and crystals. In this new column, Healthy You, we explore and explain the use of cannabidiol (CBD) oil, explaining the potential uses and benefits as well as the need to research the sources of what and where you purchase. We hope that this will be the start of candid conversations about traditional and nontraditional ways to keep yourself healthy.

W hen it comes to pain management, everyone is looking for a solution.

In recent years, CBD oil has become the choice for many individuals who are seeking solutions and older adults are among the group of users who are finding pain relief when using cannabidiol in its now many fashionable forms.

From oils and salves to edibles including gummies, CBD is said to help with pain management, including inflammation, anxiety and even seizures without the high associated with marijuana or the risk associated with other prescription drugs.

What is CBD? CBD is short for cannabidiol, an abundant chemical in the cannabis plant.

Cannabidiol is extracted from the flowers and buds of marijuana or hemp plants. It does not produce intoxication; marijuana’s “high” is caused by the chemical tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It’s important to note in Tennessee CBD products are legal only if derived from hemp and does not include THC. Buyer be wary; do your research While many of those who use CBD tout the benefits, some experts say there is little evidence for the touted benefits.

Here are ten tips you should know about CBD use: 1. CBD is being produced without regulation … so beware, do your research.

2. Overall, the medical industry does not endorse or dispute the benefits of CBD oil but many users tout the benefits of it for various situations using terms like it “takes the edge off,” “keeps me calm”; “helps me manage my pain or anxiety.”

3. Some studies on CBD have raised concerns about possible interactions with other drugs, and there is indication CBD might harm the liver. About 10 percent of people taking CBD in studies had increases in liver enzymes, which would indicate possible liver damage. It’s important to note the research is in its infancy, and the

purity and dosage of some CBD consumer products may not be reliable.

4. CBD can have negative interactions with other medications, so potential users should talk to their doctors before taking it.

5. Best practices suggest that individuals who are interested in CBD oil should seek out a doctor who understands the oil and can assess how it may interact with other medications the individual is taking.

6. For those in states such as Tennessee where marijuana is not legal it’s important to remember that CBD is derived from industrial hemp. This is cannabis with a negligible amount of THC, thereby making it hard to know what ratio as there is often little or no THC present.

7. In addition, there is no FDA approval of CBD products with the exception of the CBD medication Epidiolex to treat two rare forms of childhood epilepsy which was approved in April 2018. Without such approval, it can be hard to know what someone is buying. Today there is a great interest in packaging cannabidiol with attractive terms like “single origin,” “small batch” and “plant based.” Know what you are getting and ensure the company you are purchasing it from is legitimate.

8. The cost of CBD varies. Depending on the where CBD is purchased the strain and dose can vary tremendously. Many health insurance policies and Medicare do not cover CBD due to the federal illegality of cannabis.

Recipe re-do: Cherry Pie Crumble Bars

By Victoria Schoffner During the holidays, folks are always serving up fancy and homey desserts that bring comfort. This month, Victoria shares a classic favorite that can be redone in a healthier way. We hope you will give it a try!

Cherry Pie Crumble Bars

(Servings 12) Ingredients

For the dough: • 3/4 cup chopped almonds • 2 cups gluten free oat flour • 1 cup quick oats • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup maple syrup • 1/2 cup coconut oil

For the cherry filling: • 4 cups frozen cherries • 1 tablespoon arrowroot starch mixed with 1 tablespoon water Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9” x 9” inch baking dish with parchment paper.

2. Spread the almonds out on a baking sheet and bake for about 7 minutes until golden brown. Set aside.

3. In a bowl, combine oat flour, quick oats and salt. Stir in maple syrup and coconut oil. Using your hands, pinch mixture together to incorporate coconut oil.

4. Add almonds and knead to combine.

5. Press 2/3 of the mixture into baking dish, making sure it’s one solid crust. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool for 5 minutes.

6. Meanwhile, add the frozen cherries into a saucepan. Heat over medium heat until the cherries are defrosted and the sauce is simmering. Use a fork or potato masher to gently break cherries into smaller pieces.

Remove from the heat, add in the arrowroot starch mixture. Return to heat and simmer. Remove from the heat and set aside.

7. Pour the cherry filling over the baked crust and sprinkle on the remaining crumble.

8. Bake uncovered for 14 to 18 minutes, until the topping is firm.

9. Let cool for 45 to 60 minutes

Communicate with neighbors Have a trusted neighbor take in your package if you know you will not be home during delivery. The less time your package is on your porch unattended the less likely it will be stolen.

Have the package delivered to your workplace Many people cannot intercept a package because they are working during the delivery window. Have the package delivered directly to you at work.

Leave specific drop-off instructions Some retailers will allow you to leave drop off instructions when making your purchase. Take advantage of this feature to have your package delivered to a secure location. This can prevent your package being left in a widely visible area. If you order from Amazon you can now have your package delivered to a secure Amazon Hub Locker+ location to pick up at your convenience.

Install doorbell cameras Motion activated doorbell cameras can catch porch pirates in the act. The video surveillance can then be shared with local police when making a report. The security camera, seen by porch thieves, can act as a deterrent.

Track packages using delivery updates Sign up for tracking updates from mail providers so you can be home for the delivery.

Brooks was recognized as a 2019 Community Celebrity

by Cabot, the New England and New York farm-family owned dairy co-operative, as someone who makes a significant difference in her community.

“The Cabot farmers have a different perspective on what defines a true celebrity,” says Cabot CEO Ed Townley. “For them, the kind, giving souls who make a significant difference in their communities each and every day are the real celebrities. That’s why, in 2010, Cabot created the Community Celebrity Cruise to honor the achievements and contributions of those hard-working volunteers, and to encourage more people and organizations to join us in applauding and recognizing their efforts.”

“I was truly honored to be named a 2019 Cabot Community Celebrity and I had the time of my life on the cruise,” says Brooks.

“We consider FiftyForward and Wyvonnia part of an extraordinary group who make their communities and the world a better place, one volunteer hour at a time.”

“From her modest roots, she uses real-world experience and professional expertise as a retired nurse to share her love of learning to elementary school students who are falling behind.” Hussey adds, “At FiftyForward, through our programs, centers and services, we support, champion and enhance the lives of those 50 and older to encourage everyone to live their best life. We are honored to have one of our dedicated volunteers recognized by Cabot.”

Foster Grandparents, volunteers age 55 and older, stay active as tutors, mentors, and friends to children with exceptional needs. The FiftyForward Foster Grandparent program, a division of Senior Corps — a federal agency dedicated to engaging older adults in service to their community — was established in 1965 and stands proudly as the first such program United States. In the 2017-18 school year alone, 65 FiftyForward Foster Grandparents volunteered more than 67,000 hours to assist approximately 1,800 students in Metropolitan Nashville Public and Charter Schools.

Metro announces a new emergency alert service Metro recently announced the creation of an emergency notification service called The Metro Emergency Alert & Notification System (MEANS). It is primarily for Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County (Metro), and is powered by Everbridge, Inc. MEANS is operated by public safety departments, like the Nashville Fire Department.

MEANS will let you know what to do to stay safe in an emergency. MEANS is different from existing public alert methods like emergency sirens because the service allows you to sign up for the alerts you want, the way you want – a phone call to your cell phone or landline, a text to your cell phone, an email, or an app alert. Alerts are focused on the locations that matter to you – this could be where you live or work, your school, your local grocery store or a nearby park where you walk each morning. This will allow you to take the right actions to protect yourself and the people you care about in your current location.

Charlie Daniels Had Smart Eye Surgery The country music legend Charlie Daniels underwent a revolutionary new “smart eye surgery,” performed by Dr. Ming Wang, Harvard & MIT (MD); PhD (laser physics). Metro homeowners: check your property tax bill if you are over 65 because you may have received some good news with your tax notice and you may be entitled to some tax relief if your 2018 income was limited.

place to live, so she decided to give Heath a call.

The two met for coffee and chatted about Ayres’s living situation, what she was looking for in her next residence, budget, and the typical things discussed when contemplating a move. The two discussed buying or renting possibilities.

Then Heath asked if she ever considered buying a home? Ayres said she has never owned a home (L-R) First-time homeowner Pat Ayres and but “had dreamed of owning a Realtor Brandy Heath home since her 20s,” but now felt she was “too old” to buy a home. Heath shared stories of helping people in their 80s and 90s downsize and purchase smaller homes and condos so her young age of 71 was definitely not too old to make the purchase. The two discussed the pros and cons of homeownership versus renting, including the fact that when you own a home, your monthly mortgage is predictable, and you don’t have to worry about a landlord raising the rent. That makes a big difference for those on a budget or fixed income. Heath crunched some numbers and Ayres agreed to see what was out there in her budget to both buy or rent.

The next day, Heath emailed Ayres several homes for sale in her area that met her criteria and some information on apartments in her budget. Ayres decided to look at some of the houses and fell in love with one particular house! She was so nervous and scared, but also excited. Ayres said the experience was “challenging and nerve-wracking” because of all the paperwork, but “Brandy walked me through every step.” Ayres is now a proud first-time homeowner.

Nashville songwriter Barry Coggins hosted annual golf and music events to raise awareness and funds for FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels

FiftyForward Donelson Station hosted its third annual casino night in September which featured several games – blackjack, poker, Texas Hold ’em, craps and slot machines -- to the delight of center and community members. The event also featured live jazz music by the Jeffrey Lein Trio and a wonderful reception by The Donelson Café.

Nashville singer/songwriter Barry Coggins hosted the 20th annual Barry Coggins and FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels Golf Tournament in late September at Nashboro Golf Course. In addition to the golf tournament, Coggins also hosted the FiftyForward Fresh/Meals on Wheels Writers Night at Douglas Corner Café, as well as the “Barry-oke” music night.

His efforts this year raised more than $25,000, far more that the lofty $20,000 goal he originally set this year.

“An Evening at the Disco” In October, members of FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center stepped into the way-back machine for its annual social and dance. We enjoyed a groovy night of great food, live music, far out outfits and, of course, boogieing all night long attended by FiftyForward members, supporters, and community leaders. This gala event raised funds for the many services and activities at the FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center to support, champion and enhance life for more than 850 older adults in the Bellevue community annually.

In mid-October, FiftyForward Martin Center hosted its annual Martin Masters Art Show and Sale, transforming the center into an art gallery displaying hundreds of original works of art by more than 40 local and regional professional artists including this year’s featured artist Frank T. Gee. A portion of the proceeds from the Martin Masters Fine Art Show and Sale benefited the center’s annual fund, providing financial support to expand the center’s fine arts program, as well as other services including fitness, health and wellness, volunteerism and lifelong learning.

VITA tax services

Become a VITA volunteer and help older adults with tax preparation Tax preparation can feel like rocket science. United Way of Metropolitan Nashville volunteer Marian Ott has seen the looks of confusion and desperation on the faces of some of the clients she’s helped through United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program over the past 10 years. “There are people who come into our site trembling because they are so scared,” says Ott. Ott enjoys working with numbers. She’s one of the many VITA volunteers who have prepared free returns for individuals and families who qualify based on income. For those who aren’t as comfortable with numbers, there are other opportunities to volunteer.

“If you are not comfortable preparing tax returns, we also need greeters and people who can sort through documents and make sure clients have everything they need to help us file their taxes,” states Ott. Ott is most grateful when her work transforms a client’s life in ways they never imagined.

“I remember this elderly couple – a husband and wife ¬- close to 90,” said Ott. “Apparently, they had all of their tax documents assembled and they got misplaced. It felt like the end of the world to them.”

VITA’s greatest need is volunteers, and many begin with no prior tax prep experience. Volunteers receive free tax training from IRS-trained instructors and can serve in a variety of roles from greeters to intake specialists to tax preparers and coordinators. If there’s one requirement, it’s a willingness to learn and share knowledge with taxpayers.

Day, evening, and Saturday shifts are available at several Middle Tennessee locations, and the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville will train you!

The couple came back to the VITA site later, completed their filing process and couldn’t believe their result.

“They received a refund and I was so glad to be able to help them,” she said. “I didn’t grow up in Nashville and my dad lives somewhere else. I hope this is my way of paying it forward and perhaps people will be kind to him.”

It’s Just Stuff!

Handcrafted wooden furniture holds sentimental value for collectors Dear Connie Sue,

mass produced, sturdy and lightweight chairs.

I inherited this piece from my maternal grandfather. He called it the elephant cabinet, because there was a collection of elephant figurines which came with the cabinet. He inherited the cabinet from his uncle Judd, who inherited it from George in Topeka, Kansas.

Thonet’s patents expired in 1869, allowing other Czechoslovakian companies to produce the chairs. The mark, “Made in Czechoslovakia,” indicates your chair was made after 1914. The intention of production is also confirmed by the Bell System stamp. I think it is likely the chair was made during the war years.

I’d love to know something about its origin.

The cabinet is at my daughter’s house in East Nashville.

Joe, Franklin Dear Joe, Your well-traveled, flat front, French cabinet is a 20th century reproduction. Earlier cabinets were decorated by artists. They had marble tops, bronze ormolu, and were constructed and decorated with rare woods. These earlier cabinets can be priced over $20,000. François Linke is associated with the early, fine and flashy cabinets.

During the early 1970s in Nashville, local importers went overseas to buy antiques for sale in their shops. There must have been importers like this in Topeka, Kansas, when George was buying.

Typically, less than six of these fancy cabinets were included in a shipment.

They sold quickly from $375-$700. They remained quite pricey and were sought after until 2000 or so.

Today similar cabinets can sell for as little as $200 from an estate to over $2,000 in a bustling decorator’s shop. Location and condition greatly affect value.

You might pull together any documents about receiving the chair – where, when, why and how are good questions to answer for a solid and provocative provenance. The marks on the base will corroborate.

Telephone company subsidiaries, local and state museums and, of course, individual collectors might have interest. A reasonable price might hover around $550. I wouldn’t blame you if you decided to keep your seat and supervise.

In the mid-1970s I was working for the phone company and acquired what I understood to be an obsolete/surplus telephone operator/supervisor’s chair.

It is quite tall (33” seat height), all wood and is very sturdy yet lightweight. I found imprints on the underside of seat to include: Bell System, W.E. Co., Made in Czechoslovakia and two punched letters “TH.” The major parts are also stamped with the number “38.” It appears to be in the bentwood style with a reddish-brown/mahogany colored finish.

I’m curious about the general period for this chair (1950s?) and if there is any collector value?
