After the publication of our September issue of Forward Focus, we received this heartfelt letter from a reader sharing his FiftForward First. This letter shows that it it never too late to take on new hobbies, learn new skills, discover new careers and embrace new adventures.

Hello: At age seventy-one I retired from a forty-plus career in architecture, and found the time on my hands frustrating. My practice had been focused primarily but not exclusively on church architecture, driven by the conviction that whatever abilities I have were gifts from God, and it is my responsibility to use them for His glory.

Along with architecture, I have always loved writing. I wrote for our high school newspaper. I wrote for a student publication in college. Much of my work in architecture and virtually all of it in the military involved writing. During my years in architecture I wrote articles for The Nashville Banner, The Tennessean and The Nashville Business Journal. In addition I wrote and published three non-fiction books on architecture during this time, at the same time writing numerous articles for a variety of local and national periodicals. My first project after retirement was a personal memoir, a book primarily for my family and business associates.

Always a fan of mystery novels, I had always wanted to try my hand at this, applying the same Christian principle to this field as I had in architecture. The result is a series of Christian mysteries: The Jeffersonville Tales. Six books have now been published in this series, with a seventh soon to be available.

They are published in ebook form on Amazon Kindle and Barnes and Noble Nook. The unique thing about them is that the town –Jeffersonville – is the constant; the protagonist is different in each book, though some characters appear in more than one story. Each book has an integral story line of Christian redemption. Three of the leads in the seven books are women.

This has been my salvation from terminal retirement boredom. I praise God for that. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share.

hen a heart for community and social work intersect with a driving competitive spirit and solid strategic direction there’s a recipe for success.

The successful combination of these attributes is embodied in the dynamic duo of Janet Jernigan and Adrienne Newman, who

In December 2014, Jernigan marks her 25th year as executive director of the agency; Newman, as associate executive director, celebrates her 25th anniversary in February 2015.

Jernigan is also a competitive athlete.

Throughout her lifetime of leading an active lifestyle, she has met health and wellness goals by competing in running, biking events and in triathlons –usually besting competitors in her age bracket as well as those significantly younger than she is.

Their combined years of service, soon to total more than 50 years, is apropos for an agency that serves the 50+ crowd. Similar in some ways and very distinct in others, this dynamic duo is unique and driven by the common desire to contribute to community and specifically the segment of the aging population many folks overlook.

As a team leading the efforts of FiftyForward, there is an often unspoken respect for one another.

When Newman is asked about Jernigan, she’s quick to say, “Janet embodies the FiftyForward mission, is a natural networker and strategist who thrives on relationships, and who continues to inspire others.”

“Janet is my fitness role model. Her encouragement led me to participate in my first biking event last year. When I crossed that finish line, Janet was as excited or maybe even more excited than I was. What a confidence boost! She also praised me on my recent walk time for the 5K at Viva la Diva. She makes me believe that I can do anything, so I’m putting this in writing — Janet, I am going to do the half marathon with you before you retire!” says Newman.

When Jernigan is asked about Newman, she comments, “Adrienne has the most caring heart of anyone I know.

Personal successes

If you ask Jernigan what she considers her biggest

accomplishments to date she would likely speak to personal successes including the fact that she and her husband of 49 years, French, are proud parents of one son Brian and have two grandchildren Anna Kate and Zac. In addition, the Jernigans live on a working cattle farm and actively compete in Spotted Saddle Horse (Trail Pleasure Class) competitions.

Adding to this amazing array of personal achievements, is Jernigan’s long list of accomplishments in the Nashville nonprofit community and the fact that she is among the longest standing executives of a Nashville nonprofit.

Newman’s contributions to community are many including being named among The Tennessean’s Top 40 under 40. At the very core of her existence is her desire to treat others with respect and especially the community and the demographic group she knows and serves so well.

Mentoring others

Both Jernigan and Newman have often been recognized by others as mentors. It’s interesting to note that sometimes they have knowingly mentored someone and on other occasions individuals have cited them as a mentor simply because they modeled excellence.

A number of community athletes and nonprofit professionals say Jernigan’s keen eye for business, strategic outreach and active lifestyle have served as incentives in setting the bar high for their own personal or business objectives. Living with your parents

W

hen mom or dad needs some extra support, the first or last idea that may pop into your mind is, “Should they move in with me and my family? Is it a good or bad idea? Why would we want to consider this and why wouldn’t we?”

One of the most important things a family can do prior to making a decision is to negotiate the terms. While that may sound quite technical, it is really a chance to explore the possibilities. Generate a written list of “what if” scenarios:

If my parent moves in…

• who pays for what?

• do we eat together every day?

• will dad’s ugly recliner have to come with him or can it go away?

• does living with me mean that I take mom to all of her appointments?

• will we vacation together too?

• how will we decide if it isn’t working?

Next come up with a list of opportunities such as mom can see her grandchildren grow up, we can share financial and physical responsibility for managing a household, and we won’t have to worry about dad taking his medicine because we will know he did.

Make sure to include the whole family – your children and spouse, your parents, your siblings – in coming up with your lists. What may seem trivial to you may be a real sticking point for a significant other. Sharing this experience with all those you love gives you the ability to hear different perspectives.

Begin the process with a talk involving your immediate family about your thoughts, concerns and hopes. Go into the conversation with an open mind with your parent knowing that this may work or that other solutions may be necessary. Many adult children think their parents will be thrilled at the idea of moving in and to their dismay they learn that mom or dad would never want to do so.

It is vital to know you simply cannot come up with every pro and con, that the best laid plans sometimes unravel, and thoughtful discussion and planning usually lead to good things happening. Douglas Henry retires; welcomes Jeff Yarbro

F

or the first time in 44 years, Senator Douglas Henry is no longer holding public office. His successor, Senator Jeff Yarbro, will begin serving District 21 this winter.

When asked what he plans to do next, Senator Henry said, “Relaxing, of course.” He shared this early memory from his public service, “When I was first elected to office in 1955, I’d go to church downtown with my wife and kids. Afterwards, we would walk over to the Capitol and read the bills on the blackboard and then copy them out of the bill book.” He went on to say, “The committees were perfunctory. Governor Clement sent word down about what he wanted done.” During Henry’s tenure that changed and committee became more valued.

Henry took a break from office to raise his family and work in the family business, but the call to serve brought him back in 1971.

Senator Henry stated that the committee work is what he will miss the most. “It’s where the work gets done.” He also indicated that he is especially proud of service as the Chair of the Finance Ways and Means Committee. Senator Yarbro stated, “One of Senator Henry’s biggest legacies is his attention to the health of the state. He was concerned about our credit and bond ratings and establishing sound financial practices.”

The respect between the two Senators is evident. Senator Yarbro stated, “Senator Henry always treated his colleagues, regardless of party or where they came from, with respect and the common goal of doing business for Tennessee.”

FiftyForward thanks Senator Henry for his service and commitment to the residents of Tennessee. We also wish Senator Yarbro well in his new role.

Green Fork Academy and RSVP Volunteer Team to Teach Veterans Healthy Cooking techniques at Operation Stand Down Cooking can transform lives.

It is this simple belief that led Jilah Kalil to found Green Fork Academy (GFA), a non-profit agency that teaches individuals, children and families to cook healthy meals on a budget.

Based on her childhood experiences, Kalil has her own powerful story of the way food and eating can encompass both the positive and negative. Her happy memories of enjoying nightly dinner with her family were the inspiration to help recreate that experience for populations who are working to overcome homelessness or abuse. Her struggle with childhood obesity and subsequent weight loss helps place emphasis on making sure meals are healthy and delicious.

Green Fork Academy is providing handson programs that focus on cooking healthy, whole foods on a budget to multi-generational communities. They combine these experiences with access to local agriculture to encourage lifelong healthy habits and to decrease food related health issues such as Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.

Green Fork Academy meets the community where they are: in their neighborhood, church or community center.

Now, Green Fork Academy and RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) are partnering with Operation Stand Down, the only veterans service center in Tennessee, to provide a cooking program in Operation Stand Down’s four transitional housing units. Each home provides housing to 10 veterans in the “Return to Life” program.

The "Return to Life" program is a six week program offering life skills, job training, and health and wellness classes to veterans in an effort to enhance learning, employment and life opportunities.

Veterans participate in a 12 step based holistic recovery program to rebuild their lives in preparation for their return to independent living.

RSVP needs volunteers who enjoy cooking, working with veterans and who want to share their joy and passion for food as a Volunteer Culinary Educator.

Beginning in February 2015, GFA and RSVP volunteers will visit an OSDN house twice a month from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, and provide a handson cooking program that will teach basic cooking skills, label reading and meal planning on a limited budget to veterans in the program.

FiftyForward RSVP will conduct a “Lunch & Learn” volunteer training at FiftyForward Knowles on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014 and Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015 from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. for those interested in volunteering in the Green Fork Academy initiative. With the assistance of Green Fork Academy staff, RSVP volunteers will prepare the ingredients, cook the meal, and eat the lunch they prepared.

Volunteers will also visit and observe a GFA program prior to beginning service. All supplies, recipes and food are provided by Green Fork Academy.

continues to showcase best practices to students who will one day fill her shoes. To date, Newman estimates approximately 50 students have completed internships with FiftyForward under her guidance and many remain in the Nashville community as social workers.

Contributing to today’s Nashville

As executive team leaders of FiftyForward, Jernigan and Newman established policies, best practices and numerous programs in Nashville, benefiting older adults.

Jernigan and Newman were instrumental in developing and implementing CHOICE (Care in the Home Over Institutional Care for the Elderly) which led to systemic changes in how care is delivered in Tennessee. Nearly 50% of adults eligible for nursing home care are now being able to stay in their homes with needed assistance. Materials from this effort also were the catalyst to create the statewide program now operated by TennCare and the Area Agencies on Aging.

In 1995, Jernigan co-chaired a Senior Services Task Force as part of Nashville’s Agenda. Her team focused on services for older adults and she brought in Newman who was then working on her master’s degree in social work.

Their effort birthed the Frail Elder Service Coalition and was the catalyst for a community evaluation and teams to address unmet needs for older adults.

The duo excels in relationship building, planning and community development, all of which were instrumental in 1996 when FiftyForward successfully secured a location in an area where there was a large concentration of older adults and few activities or services for them. Now, FiftyForward Madison Station is a vibrant contributor to community. As the center’s first director, Newman takes great pride in sharing that in its first year of operation Madison Station was named Business of the Year by the Madison Chamber of Commerce.

Jernigan and Newman also led a community steering committee to launch the inaugural Nashville Night Out Against Crime. Their sub-committee (under Nashville’s Agenda) addressed the increased incidence of older adults becoming crime victims. Today, Nashville’s Night Out Against Crime continues to reduce crime and build community

During Mayor Bill Purcell’s administration, Jernigan was asked to chair Nashville Tomorrow as a means to gain approval for a half-cent sales tax increase (property tax relief benefiting older adults and to increase funding for Metro Schools). Although the referendum failed, Jernigan and Newman worked with community groups and stakeholders to get the property tax relief passed through the legislature. Metro Trustees staff signed up more than 2,000 individuals at FiftyForward Centers, the FiftyForward Living at Home staff assisted another 1,000 older adults (who could not leave their homes).

In 2008, FiftyForward Living at Home Services was recognized as an exceptional locally developed program model by the National Council on Aging and designated as one of 19 programs in the U.S. for effectiveness, impact, sustainability and worthiness of replication.

FiftyForward benefited from the interaction with NCOA, other recognized agencies and has been able to strategically plan and expand the FiftyForward Living at Home Services (including FiftyForward Meals on Wheels, as well as enacting evidenced-based models for prevention and intervention services in addition to increasing interaction with homebound older adults).

During Nashville’s Flood of 2010, the duo secured funding and mobilized services to meet basic needs and connect clients with resources to improve their living conditions.

Giving Back

“My mother started taking these trips with her friend, Vaunez, around eight years ago, and now I have joined in on the fun. Mom and I have traveled all around Tennessee on the FiftyForward day trips. We even took a long trek to Michigan and Mackinac Island a few years ago. It is such a nice bonding time for us. We see wonderful sites, and the bus ride gives us precious time to just sit and talk. My mother loves to take pictures, and once home, we reminisce about our adventures. Gloria is 92 years young, still drives, and the Bellevue YMCA is her social haven. She works out three or four times a week, and I can’t say enough about all the programs they provide for her. She’s thriving, and like the Energizer Bunny, keeps on going and going! To all you at FiftyForward, keep up the great work!”

FiftyForward Knowles member gives back to community This led to crocheting at church with several church members. This group began to grow and now this large, culturally diverse group calls themselves the “Knit Wits,” taking on volunteer projects that need their skills.

FiftyForward Knowles member Nancy Weatherman faced two major tragedies in her life within a year – the loss of her daughter and the passing of her best friend. But she didn’t let these events keep her down. As a new retiree at the time, she wanted to pursue a hobby that would allow her to give back.

She attended the Big Stitch several years ago as a way to relearn how to crochet, a skill she possessed, but by her account needed re-tooling.

From January to October of this year, Weatherman says the Knit Wits have crocheted/knitted more than 1,019 caps for communities in need including newborns, cancer patients and for clients at Room at the Inn and the Rescue Mission.

On January 2015, The Big Stitch will celebrate their 25th gathering. Join Weatherman and her fellow knitters/ crocheters and learn how to turn your hobby into a way to give back to your community.

FiftyForward Martin Center presented its annual Martin Masters celebration in November to feature local established and emerging artists.

The event allows artists to network and patrons to purchase beautiful artwork.

Members enjoyed a rousing game of “Name that Tune” featuring favorite Motown songs, a potluck and a chance to pose in the photo booth designed and painted by program coordinator Candace Waligora. ARTOBER in Nashville The Frist Center for the Visual Arts made a call to artists in Nashville and surrounding counties for an opportunity to submit artwork to be displayed on the bollards outside its building. Artwork was chosen by a panel at the Frist, and from a total of 35 art submissions, FiftyForward J. L. Turner program coordinator Candace Waligora was one of five artists selected to paint one of the Frist Center’s bollards located on the Demonbreun Street side of the building. On a crisp Saturday morning, Candace joined several other artists and transferred her two dimensional design from a canvas to the three-dimensional, round bollard. Candace’s work of art may be viewed until Jan. 4, 2015.

Of this opportunity, Candace says, “It was an honor to have my artwork chosen to adorn one of the Frist’s bollards for Artober. I enjoyed being able to represent myself as an artist and as an employee of FiftyForward, one of the Frist’s many community partners.”

WPLN General Manager Rob Gordon and Nashville jazz singer Joe Freel gave a free mini concert in October at FiftyForward Knowles to a very appreciative crowd.

W hen the holidays are over and the dreary winter months come, it can be easy to get the blues.

There is also a medical condition, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which affects many people during the winter. SAD is a mood condition in which depression occurs as seasons change. Feelings of sadness, low levels of energy, irritability, and weight gain are symptoms of SAD, and the disorder is most prevalent in winter.

FiftyForward Madison Station held its monthly Tasty Tuesday on Tuesday, Nov. 18 and featured a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Tasty Tuesday began as a way to highlight new foods and healthier ways to cook as well as a chance to socialize and discuss recipes.

Of course, addressing Seasonal Affective Disorder on one’s own isn’t always enough to clear the seasonal depression. We encourage you to talk to your doctor about your symptoms to get further help.

Special January programming offered to combat the winter blues At FiftyForward Knowles, we have designated January as “Happiness Month!” In addition to our ongoing exercise classes and social activities, which can help people manage seasonal depression, programs will focus on topics related to happiness. RSVP Director, Robin Johnson, will discuss the ways that volunteering can make people happy. Sarah Martin McConnell, Director of Music for Seniors, will lead us in singing happy songs. Potential wellness programs include mindfulness and meditation, optimism, gratitude, and a presentation on Seasonal Affective Disorder. We can’t forget about laughter, which promptly increases happiness – a joke day and appearance by a comedian are in the works.

It sometimes becomes more difficult for people to leave the house during winter, but sometimes just getting outside, even walking to and from your car, can make a big difference in your mood. We hope that you will venture out to FiftyForward Knowles for Happiness Month and every month. Fun activities and bright smiles from staff and members will be sure to perk you right up!

by Lori Corley, Director Active Aging FiftyForward offers many different options for membership in centers located in Davidson and Williamson counties. Our partnerships with private donors, foundations, United Way, and the Area Agency on Aging allow us to keep our annual membership at the low price of $120/year. We accept bank draft members at $10/month — an easy way to keep a membership current.

Membership at one center entitles you to member prices for trips, events, etc. at our other centers.*

A new partnership offers more options

This year we are excited to announce we have partnered with Silver and Fit®

by American Specialty Health along with SilverSneakers® by Healthways to offer memberships to their health plan participants. If you have been notified by your health plan provider that you are an eligible participant, please stop by your nearest FiftyForward location and sign up for membership. Through these plans, your annual membership is at no cost to you. We are thrilled to partner in promoting health and wellness through our centers.

Now, the MySeniorCenter network will help keep our membership systems and attendance records current. Well-loved family holiday recipes warm the You know them when you see them...the weathered recipe cards in the box or folder, corners folded over or ripped from many years of use and reference. The tried-and-true family recipes, handed down generation to generation. Your mom made the best comfort food, but little did you know at the time, the recipe came from grandma. You just knew it was what you wanted this holiday.

Adrienne Newman, Associate Executive Director, shares a well-loved family recipe from her grandmother that stands the test of time in her family.

Banana Layer Cake

by Helene (Nanny) Burkhart 1 1/2 cups sugar 1/2 cup Crisco (vegetable shortening) 2 eggs 6 tablespoons buttermilk (make your own by combining 5 Tablespoons whole milk with 1 Tablespoon of vinegar) 2 cups flour 1 cup mashed bananas 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon vanilla pinch of salt Combine bananas with baking soda. Cream together sugar, vegetable shortening and eggs. Mix in vanilla, salt, flour, banana mixture and buttermilk. *Like all family recipes passed on … some of the details are cryptic. Nanny loosely stated that a 275 degree oven temperature would work and to watch for “doneness” but nanny’s oven wasn’t as powerful as today’s modern appliances.

Chess Squares by Rosemary Geier stick of butter 1 box yellow cake mix 3 eggs 1 cup chopped pecans 8 oz. cream cheese 1 1 lb. box confectioner’s sugar (softened) Melt butter in 9 x 13” pan. Combine yellow cake mix, 1 egg, and 1 cup of chopped pecans in a mixing bowl.

Pat mixture in bottom of buttered pan.

In a separate mixing bowl, beat 2 eggs and add softened cream cheese and confectioner’s sugar. Pour into pan.

Bake at 325 degrees (350 degrees in a metal pan) for 35 minutes.

My parents, Marjorie and John Compton, lived a great life together celebrating 63 years of marriage. Like many older couples who have lived a lifetime together, they died within two months of each other.

“It was a very intense time, but also one of amazing moments of love and gratitude,” said Beth Interlandi.

We are thankful that my Mom lived with us for her last couple of months and that together they were able to stay in their home of 53 years with the help of many wonderful caretakers.

I am so grateful to have lived down the street from my folks all these years and to have been able to be retired and fully present with them during their last challenging years.

Though my mom was the one who used most of the supplies we donated to FiftyForward, Dad was the one who researched and purchased them all.

Donations included supportive devices for home care including a shower grab bar and bench; wheel chair and cushion, drop-arm commode, hearing aid batteries, as well as canned nutritional drinks and personal care items.

Q: How did you learn about FiftyForward?

Like many individuals who are caring for older parents there are a lot of emotions and juggling and tough decisions. I was in a fog after my parents’ deaths and was very grateful to have a place that welcomed such donations!

It’s interesting to note that I’ve been going to Gigi’s yoga at FiftyForward Knowles for a couple of years, and my friend Linda McFadyen-Ketchum found FiftyForward accepts donations for its home health care program.

Q: As a family member who cared for their loved one at home, what advice do you have for others in similar situations?

As a family caregiver, I learned firsthand about the process and challenges.

Boy, is it ever a big but oh-so important job! I needed lots of extra help with basic care, so we hired wonderful caregivers for most of the daytime hours.

This allowed me to focus on meals, giving insulin injections, reading aloud to Mom every afternoon, and it helped save my back with all the lifting. I was on call throughout the nights, but near the end, we began needing nighttime help.

My biggest word of advice to others is: You HAVE to get your rest and some time away – don’t feel guilty about this. Try to be fully present when you are with your parent, but do take time to do things for yourself.

This caregiving also illuminated things for me and my husband who as an M.D. has spent his entire life caring for others. We are trying to set aside funds and to keep our long term care insurance so that we can remain independent

as long as possible, and, if necessary, be able to pay for inhome care so as not to stress our children.

Q: As a medical professional, what advice do you have for those who are 50+?

Act your age and pick ageappropriate activities. (Of course, there are quite a range of these!)

Stay healthy and active, but don’t emphasize looking or acting young – it will not protect you against death or infirmity.

Q: Being a FiftyForward couple, what do you do to remain young and active?

A: We make sure we have social engagements, like giving dinner parties, planning movie nights, going to art exhibits, new restaurants, or concerts, but not too many events. Our primary focus is on each other and on our daughters and grandson. We try to get outside regularly and work to keep exercise fun.

We read a lot, keep up with the news and current events, and always challenge ourselves to learn new things. We take time to prepare and enjoy healthy meals together with NO TV. Mealtime is a chance to discuss ideas and what we’re both thinking about. In fact, we rarely turn on the television unless it is to watch a movie on the weekends. There is always something more interactive to do with your time than sitting like a passive lump on the couch!

We have lots of younger friends and love learning from them – not in order to be “hip” but as a way to feel fresh and involved so we can communicate better with our kids and their friends.

Expect to develop some aches and pains. Think of them as gentle reminders that it’s OK to slow down. As a wise man from Brooklyn once told me “If it hoits when ya do dat, then don’t do dat!”

Learn to compromise and celebrate differences. Divorce in people over 50 is devastating and is often accompanied not only by the loss of companionship and a lifetime of memories, but by the loss of health insurance, just at a time when you need it.

On personal health and seeing physicians: 1.

Use reliable websites for medical information that are sponsored by MD specialty societies. If the website is trying to sell you “supplements” or “vitamins,” don’t buy them!

Get screened for osteoporosis every two years. If you are diagnosed with it, see an osteoporosis specialist. Your lifetime risk for an osteoporotic fracture is 66%.

Don’t criticize your doctor if you are overweight. Take responsibility for control of your weight and appearance. A new Scientific American article, “Killer Chairs: How Desk Jobs Ruin Your Health,” cites research showing that Americans sit way too much! This sedentary behavior has contributed to weight gain and the epidemic of diabetes. Try to keep moving to help maintain a healthy weight, learn about good nutrition, locally sourced produce and enjoy cooking.
