Grammy nominated songwriter, Carey Ott, wants to help you unleash your creative inner genius. He has played with The Doobie Brothers, Gin Blossoms, and Twisted Sister. His dream was to make music in Music City and now his dream is a reality. Carey believes that everyone has a song to write and sing. He has written hundreds of songs in all genres and styles. Bring your craziest ideas-the more creative the better!

The goal is for participants to have their own finished song and have the opportunity to participate in a FiftyForward exhibition at a later date. Make sure to sign-up fast! There are a limited number of spots for this class.

Upcoming Events: March We are very excited to begin “Tasty Tuesdays with Matt” starting Tuesday, February 24 at 2 pm. Chef Matt from McKendree Village will be here the 4th Tuesday of every month to show off his culinary skills. We will learn new recipes and get to taste each dish. This is FREE! Don’t miss out! Thanks so much for those of you who have renewed your membership for 2015. For those who have not, you will not be able to take advantage of all that we offer. Please do not take offense if a staff member or volunteer lets you know that you must renew. Our Center is membership driven and those membership fees help keep us going.

Dear Friends, We have a lot of exciting things happening this month from the new Songwriter’s Class to Tasty Tuesdays! Get involved and try new things! I love to hear from members about their “firsts”, trying something new for the first time. If you have any good ideas for trips or events, make sure to let me know.

Our trip to the estate sale last month was so much fun! We will continue this monthly, so I encourage you to sign-up! You never know what great bargains you may find.

On April 17, we will be heading to the Nashville Symphony for a morning concert as Maestro Guerrero conducts Beethoven’s landmark First Symphony. FREE coffee and pastries are included! This will be in the March Depot! Tickets will be $34.00 for your ticket and van ride. Hope you can join us!

Grief & Loss Group Have you experienced a loss? The end of your caregiving journey can be difficult, sad and overwhelming. Learn more about saying goodbye, keeping memories alive and finding renewal through loss. Join our Grief & Loss Group and surround yourself with those who have gone through this exact situation. It’s comforting to share with others who understand the grieving process. This group meets on the 4th Thursday of each month at 9 am in our social hall. You do not have to sign-up, just show up!

Bargain Basement Our bargain basement is in need of items to restock our shelves. Please bring in any knick-knacks, dishes, framed art, jewelry, small furniture or other items that you would like to donate (no clothes or electronics). We will gladly take it off your hands! This helps us raise money for our center and continue our programming.

Snow Policy for 2014-2015 If Metro schools are closed, we will NOT have our regular daytime programming, classes, events or scheduled trips, BUT our office will still open. MTGMS JEWELRY CLASSES The Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society offers more than 30 jewelry classes quarterly at FiftyForward Donelson Station. Some Winter Classes are still available. 2015 COMPUTER CLASSES All computer classes are $20 for members and $30 for non-members Classes are on Saturdays from 9am-11am (4 classes per month) Beginning Microsoft Word-Feb.14—Mar. 7 Microsoft Word is a very powerful word processing application designed to save you time while creating letters, reports and other documents. You will learn the basic features of MS Word, the skills to edit and format documents with ease, and the ability to set up pages and print documents.

Advanced Microsoft-Word-Mar. 14—Apr. 4 This course is designed to teach advanced techniques on how to program more efficiently and automate repetitive processes. This will benefit those who deal with large documents and perform repetitive tasks which could be automated using macros.

Basic Computer Class-Apr. 11— May 2.-You will learn Windows 7 navigation, how to save and search files, how to pin and unpin applications and documents to the Start Menu and Taskbar, and how to customize the desktop. The class will also cover what each part of windows in Window Explorer means and what each icon does.

BALLROOM DANCING Starts Monday, February 2 at 6:45 pm We have eight people signed up so far for this awesome class. We would love to have more! You will learn traditional ballroom dances: Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Rumba and more!

You do NOT need to have a partner for this class. Our instructor, Kathleen Phillips, has more than 35 years of experience as a dance instructor and even taught our rhythm-less director, Angela! The classes will be held on Monday nights at 6:45 pm for one hour. The cost is $8.00 per person per class. Please pay the instructor NOT FiftyForward! Geneology/Family History Workshop–Thurs., Feb. 12 from 10 am-12 pm. This is a FREE workshop! Receive hands-on training on how to gather information and find family members using the free website www.familysearch.org. Bring at least one family name, date of birth or death, and the place of birth or death.

Spouse, children, parents or sibling names are helpful too. Learn how to enter this information online and begin building your family tree. This will lead to recording your family memories and adding pictures. If you own a laptop, bring it with you to class. Be sure to sign up in the front office. Limited to 10 people!

Dragonfly Consignment/Cortney’s–Mon., Feb. 16. Another favorite spot of ours, Dragonfly Consignment is in Mt. Juliet and has gently used furniture and other items that never disappoint! Then, enjoy lunch at Cortney’s! Cortney’s offers country fried steak, jambalaya, catfish, pulled pork, fried chicken and a variety of sides. Leave the center at 9:45 am. Cost for the van is $5.00.

Life Alert/Power Home Technologies Presentation– Tues., Feb. 17 at 9:45 am. Ryan Coe, former Metro Police officer for 12 years, will be here to discuss a promotional package for seniors which includes a life alert medical pendant and a home security system with no installation or activation fee. Feel safe in your home 24 hours a day. This is worth your time to come and listen to this presentation.

Mardi Gras Center Lunch–Tues., Feb. 17 at 11 am. Let’s party Mardi Gras style! Join us for a fabulous Cajun lunch of Louisiana Red Beans & Rice! Come dressed in your Mardi Gras garb (beads, hats, masks) and be ready to play games, trivia, win door prizes and listen to some Cajun music. Cost for the lunch is $7.00. Wills/Durable Power of Attorney/Advance Care Plans–Wed., Feb. 18 from 8 am –5 pm. Marshall Snyder, Attorney at Law, will help you with Simple Wills ($25.00 each), Durable Power of Attorney ($25.00 each) and Advance Care Plans /Medical Directives ($10.00 each). This is a DEAL! If you have not done the above or you need to make some changes, make an appointment with Mr. Snyder in our front office. Music for Seniors and The Nashville Opera present a special program by Nashville Opera’s Mary Ragland Young Artists. This is a FREE concert at the Knowles Center. The cost for the van is $5.00. “Nutrition Presentation”–Thurs., Feb 19 at 10 am. Chiropractor, Dr. Adam Dixon, will discuss current scientific evidence about nutrition to encourage eating habits that can maximize our quantity of life. He will also clear up the fog of blogs and blend of trends confusing our views on diets. If you live in America, you need to hear this FREE presentation! Sign-up in the front office.

TRIPS/EVENTS CONTINUED… “Sing-Along” Choir–Fri., Feb. 20. This is a FREE event at Lakeshore Heartland Nursing Home. Our Sing-Along choir will present music to the residents of Heartland as a way of giving back to the community. If you would like to attend and visit with some of the residents, you are more than welcome to go to Lakeshore Heartland on your own. The address is 3025 Fernbrook Lane in Donelson. The event starts at 10:30 am.

Mystery Lunch–Fri., Feb. 20. Mystery lunch is a center favorite and fills up fast! Joe has another great restaurant lined up for February! If you like to be surprised, join the gang and head out on the “mystery” van! Leave the center at 10:45. Cost for the van is $6.00.

Tasty Tuesdays with Matt–Tues., Feb. 24 at 2 pm. We are very excited about this NEW event that will happen the 4th Tuesday of each month! Chef Matt, from McKendree Village, will show us his exemplary culinary skills and share some of his favorite recipes with us! Matt is extremely popular with the McKendree residents, and we are so happy that he is going to share his talents with FiftyForward members.

Come and sample and learn new recipes! He is also an award winning ice carver! This is FREE!!!! You must sign-up in the front office.

Movie Day at Opry Mills–Wed., Feb. 25. Join us for a movie at Opry Mills. The time and movie choice is TBD. You will get a call from our front office letting you know this information a few days in advance. A senior movie ticket is $8.50. Cost for the van is $3.00.

Supper Club–Thurs., Feb. 26. Amanda and the gang are headed to Cajun Steamer in Franklin where they are known for their wide array of Cajun classics and original creations prepared from scratch . Leave the center at 5 pm. Cost for the van is $6.00.

Estate Sale in Green Hills–Fri., Feb. 27. We had so much fun on our last estate sale trip and found some great bargains. Steve Fulps Estate Sales has another home in Green Hills that we will check out! Cost for the van is $5.00. “Caring for The Caregiver” is an ongoing event on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Debbie Reilly, LSW, will help you learn how to care for yourself while taking on the care of others.

Summit Audiology will be here the third Wednesday of every month from 10am until noon.

Our Digital Camera Club, Computer Club, and IPAD/Tablet class welcome anyone who would like to join.
